Man, just recently I turned on or booted up three of my old Macs, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac. All three of these I bought back in 2010 and when I first turned them on, they were running the highest high Sierra except for one. One of them ran Mac OS X lion, which was a throwback. But I eventually updated that one to High Sierra and my MacBook Pro to macOS Catalina with a patcher. But surprisingly, they still run and have a use the iMac I use as a TV or to stream TH-cam the MacBook Pro. I run it as a security camera computer and the MacBook Air. I have a sitting around but every once in a while I would use it. I never traded in any Macs because they were not worth it. I also believe that the fact that I upgraded all of those Mac to the eye aspect when I bought it from 2010 that it still runs almost 15 years later. But I do currently own a Mac mini from 2018 and a MacBook Air 2020, which I specked out too. But just recently I’ve actually bought a new 2023 MacBook Pro 16in with a M3 max 40 Core GPU chip. I also loaded it with 128 GB of RAM and a 4TB of storage. This came out to like six grand, but Apple financing is helping me and I personally love it and think this will also last me another 15 years. This is probably overkill for even 10 years or 15 years, but I wanted to match the specs of my PC.😅

5:51 MacOS 8.5 was the one that added the theming engine, and some alternative themes were made available in the betas. These were all dropped before final release, but they did still work if you installed them.
Actually the Lisa was Apple’s first GUI based computer. It didn’t sell well, but it was still the first. The Xerox Star was released 3 years before Macintosh. Xerox got their product to market before Apple. I would like to see a video that discusses the orgins of Mac OS X. It all started with NeXT. OS X was a revamp of NeXTSTEP. Today all of Apple’s operating systems have their roots in the work done at NeXT. Most Apple users have no idea that manh of the technologies running their devices were created over 30 years ago.
Brings back lost of nostalgic memories. The video is completely right about the first version of Mac OS being slow. After upgrading the Mac OS 9 on my black Powerbook G3 to Mac OS X, it became incredibly slow, to the point of being unusable! But I loved the new OS so much that instead of downgrading back to Mac OS 9, I went out and bought a new Titanium PowerBook G4. Was worth the enhanced user experience.
The reason for the slow UI of early OS X is more related to the fact, that it uses "Display PDF" rendering technique, derived from "Display PostScript" of the NeXT Computer is based on (which was infamous for the incredible display quality while being a slow UI ;) So basically anything on the screen is a PDF document. With Quarz Core I think in 10.4 Apple build a much quicker rendering engine and the UI became much faster (If I understand that correctly, it uses calculation power of the graphics chips). This is the reason why even today the display quality of macOS is still higher than most other computer Systems.
4:49 Before System 7, there was quite a lot of work happening in the 6.0.x series. For example, 6.0.7 backported the Mac II Sound Manager API to lesser Mac models. Also TrueType was made available as a drop-in extension for ≥6.0.5 users who couldn’t upgrade to 7.0.
MacOS and the iOS family share the same kernel (the invisible part of an operating system), but the biggest design principle of iOS from Steve Jobs himself is that the mobile operating system should never have a dedicated file manager (Finder in MacOS). Each app would be responsible for file management appropriate for itself. That changes the focus of development tremendously.
I still have it installed on second partition of my disk. The main partition runs Mojave. Snow Leopard is great and beautiful. Still a useful OS today except for few websites that won't work on it. I actually use SL to watch movies and play older games.
Nice and very interesting, a good trip back in my childhood with this video. Just a precision: High Sierra also introduced APFS disk format which was a huge change (killing all non-SSD drives). Thanks for the nostalgia :D
Hey, can you do a video about iPhone/iPad/iPod analytics. I don’t know what they mean. Go to settings>privacy>analytics&improvements>analytics data. I have a lot of “panic-full” messages in there and many other ones, I can’t find anywhere else which tells me what analytics mean, thanks.
Absolutely love your channel man and you put out some amazing content. As a regular watcher/subscriber can I respectfully request that background music going forward is either something different occasionally and/or forgone altogether? This track is just getting old imo and it's often too loud.
The key thing to understand of going from Mojave to Catalina is not that it dropped 32bit apps, it dropped a whole application OS within an OS that had been there since the begining: CarbonOS. The dual OS of CarbonOS + AppKitOS moved to AppKitOS + iOS, discontining an entire OS platform and the programs made for it. As seismic as dropping the ClassicOS and moving to the NeXTOS based platforms of AppKitOS and iOS.
You don't know anything. G. you don't know anything. I will do everything. So in the 1990's the American Military invented the Internet and it soon became public. They owned the domains ".com", ".net" and ".org". They costed $8-13 Then there was a new organization that assigned every country a 2 letter code. The cost was made by the country. Now I have told you about domains. Yes they are called domains. You have a Dynamic IP Address. Which changes and isn't reliable because it changes. It makes it possible to connect to the internet otherwise it would be one person at a time. You need a Static IP Address. If you type ""6.6.6.6" in you browser it will bring you to nothing. Search it in an engine and you would see that it's somewhere in America. Your IP Address will change and will bring you somewhere else. Programming isn't hard It is an Advertisement. You will have to find a good place which is very easy. Don't spend half of your time in H.T.M.L. use that ii C.S.S. because you will need to learn all the properties. I hate Javascript. I am suspicious of React because Jens at Mojang said "Facebook creeps me out.". I don't know of PHP and it looks like an Email List. For Sql you have Microsoft Access. There is a thing called a C.M.S. It is 40mb bloatware that slowly rises to 1gb. I am trying to make a Off Site C.M.S. but I would have to break all of security. Most W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G. editors don't have advanced features to make a real website. Dreamweaver is close but you still have to code. I'm really good at this. I have written way more than this for average.

Mac was not first consumer computer to use Graphical User Interface. Not even lisa was the first. Probably the first was Xerox Alto. But Mac was definitely a pinnacle computer in terms of elegance and user friendliness. I’ve been using Mac OS since system 7.0 in 1993 all the way to currently using macOS Big Sur. I never forget the kernel panics in OS X 10.0. My favorite was system 8.5/8.6. Also the OS X snow leopard because of the icons are not flat looking like today and the rich features.. Most corporates have gone flat logo and icons since for about a decade. Oh by the way I do like macOS Big Sur. It does have a mixture of iPadOS and macOS in one.
There shouldn’t be a war between the OS you prefer.. or the phone you choose.. but there is. Just let people like what they like, I use MacOS, Windows, and Linux occasionally. You don’t have to chose one to love and one to hate.
I'm going to be technical and picky when you say the Mac OS has been around since 1984: The original Mac OS was very close to the Apple Lisa's operating system which came out almost a year before the Macintosh 128K. The Lisa came out in early 1983 along with its operating system, Lisa OS. They were so closely intertwined that the Apple Lisa was later renamed the Macintosh XL.With regard to "SCSI" (Small Computer System Interface), no one ever called it "S" "C" "S" "I", it was pronounced "Scuzzy" and allowed up to 7 peripherals (plus a host for a total of 8 devices) to be daisy-chained together. When discussing the change in the later versions of MacOS, you should mention why the look & feel was changed, i.e., shift away from the use of 3D icons and skeuomorphs. Finally, with each major architectural change (e.g., from Motorola processors to PowerPC, from PowerPC to Intel, from 32-bit Intel applications to 64-bit Intel applications, and now Intel to Apple Silicon), Apple's support for earlier hardware was relatively short-lived. Apple pushed users to upgrade older hardware (i.e., buy new) even if it was perfectly useful.

Apple: launches new operating system
Greg/apple explained: Straight after the launch makes new video about Mac OS
I barely use my Mac anymore I switch for my iPad Pro w/ magic keyboard to my main laptop. Its perfect
I started with system 7.5 on a Performa 550. My next Mac was my favorite computer running my favorite OS - a 12” G4 PowerBook running 10.4 Tiger. I no longer have it, but I still have a working iMac G4 running it!
I had my grandparents old iMac for a while. Good ol ‘floating screen’ iMac
Still considered a pretty good day-to-day design for a desktop with internal expandability being the main limitation.
@@vctrsigma too bad I had it way after it’s time. My cousin and I tried to update software to a recent-ish version of OS X but it had such a limited RAM we couldn’t make the jump of OS
@@Willy48420 Are you talking about the iMac with a white dome base and the floating attached LCD screen? That thing had a G4 processor in it. You could load it up with quite a bit of RAM (for the time). I think the last version of Mac OS X you could have installed on that was 10.4 (Tiger). After that version, you needed a Mac with an Intel Core processor.
@@aytviewer2421 yup that’s the one. We were trying to run snow leopard I think for iPod nano 4&5 so we needed a more current version of iTunes
The pronunciation of Ars Technica's John Siracusa at 8:28 sent me lol You can't expect any better from someone who hasn't heard his podcasts, but it's still hilarious. Great video :)
I waited so long for this video, thanks
The first version of Mac OS I used was ~10.6, but the first I used on a daily basis after switching to a Mac was 10.10 "Yosemite." The oldest version of Mac OS I've used is Macintosh System 6.0.7.
12:29 why are u not talking about the fact that apple made a time machine and released it to the public
Expose absolutely revolutionized window management and multitasking. I previously spent years double-clicking window shade over and over and over and over and over, hundreds of times every day... after Expose, my productivity _took off like a rocket._ 🚀
I love this channel sooo much great quality vids.
I haven't used Macs since 2008-2009, but those Tiger screenshots made me nostalgic and press the middle button to load my widgets. Good times.
6:33 Holy shit that transition to the sponsor really makes me want to try out Squarespace lol
Good one Greg 😂😂
Me before watching this: Snow Leopard was my favorite, idk why. It was a while ago, I just remember it being something special.
Me after finishing: oh okay lol everyone loved that one, it really was great. I do remember going to the Apple Store and buying a copy of Snow Leopard and that being the last time I had to buy an upgrade.
Sure wish Windows would just let you have their upgrades...
0:01 Xiaomi be like: really?
3:54 Wow we are have a colored Macintosh!! Cool for old times!!!

What's the background music?
The reason for the slow UI of early OS X is more related to the fact, that it uses "Display PDF" rendering technique, derived from "Display PostScript" of the NeXT Computer is based on (which was infamous for the incredible display quality while being a slow UI ;)
So basically anything on the screen is a PDF document.
Boy what a trip from my youth to today.... I joined in the party in the mid 90's with a Performa 6200 running System 7.5 (I think). Thanks for this!
You and me both. First computer I ever had was a Performa 6290CD with System 7.5.1 just like you.
I think Catalina is one of the "not so good" version of MacOS
Yeah
its actually not so bad
I think both Apple’s and Microsoft’s OSes are getting so complicated that every attempt to fix one bug just creates another one.
@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 your right, same like minecraft
Why?
MacOS and the iOS family share the same kernel (the invisible part of an operating system), but the biggest design principle of iOS from Steve Jobs himself is that the mobile operating system should never have a dedicated file manager (Finder in MacOS). Each app would be responsible for file management appropriate for itself. That changes the focus of development tremendously.
I have never used Mac OS, but oki. Still love the video BTW. ❤️
Same 😁
Boo windows users
I still miss Snow Leopard...
I still have it installed on second partition of my disk. The main partition runs Mojave.
Snow Leopard is great and beautiful. Still a useful OS today except for few websites that won't work on it. I actually use SL to watch movies and play older games.
3:48 Huh? They were *all* Motorola processors.
Right, I think he meant the first Mac with a 68020 processor (previous models used a 68000)
Nice and very interesting, a good trip back in my childhood with this video. Just a precision: High Sierra also introduced APFS disk format which was a huge change (killing all non-SSD drives). Thanks for the nostalgia :D
2000 was the best year of music

Hey, can you do a video about iPhone/iPad/iPod analytics. I don’t know what they mean. Go to settings>privacy>analytics&improvements>analytics data. I have a lot of “panic-full” messages in there and many other ones, I can’t find anywhere else which tells me what analytics mean, thanks.
Absolutely love your channel man and you put out some amazing content. As a regular watcher/subscriber can I respectfully request that background music going forward is either something different occasionally and/or forgone altogether? This track is just getting old imo and it's often too loud.
Hope you keep updating this video for newer versions of the OS. This is great.
“A - R - S Technica’s John SyracusE...” Oof. Even worse than when he spelled out SCSI
The narrator (and presumably uploader) is a clod.
I remember when High Sierra was the latest release. I can't believe so much has changed with macOS since then, leading up to macOS Sonoma in 2023.
8:00 Who tf pronounces Aqua like that?? 😂
Thats- thats how a lot of people pronounce it like me but it depends on your accenr or where you live ig

It refined GUI in so many ways, it drove the entire industry and even tho commercially it was a flop, the first Mac always stood as a benchmark of how GUI should work and behave

Great video! Mavericks was my first venture into macOS. I remember thinking how nice everything was. Nothing felt like bloatware - everything was clean. I ended up (for better or worse) relying on all the first party apps through iCloud. Still going strong today on Sonoma

Stop randomly put sponsors in the middle of the video. Just put it at the end of the video like everyone does.
👍🏻
System 7 was the first MacOS I ever used. When I went to uni in 1995 Macs were the machines of choice for browsing the Web.
lol my dad still uses mavericks, but i can't complain, i LOVE skeuomorphism and mavericks was the last version of macos to use it. that's also why i absolutely adore ios 6, easily my favorite ver of ios

Leopard is the best purely because Exodus Honey was ‘the Apple song’ in the late 2000’s and the beat is so catchy.
I bought one of these from a local seller, for $50.00 including software! They all worked great!
The SE.
System 6 was my first dive into Macintosh I believe. Although much has changed in the OS since... There is a real consistency and familiarity that Apple has maintained so that Users can not feel completely lost in a new OS release!
Ah! Internet explorer and Outlook express on macOS 8 😁
