  • These tunes are pretty much all played in Cajun tuning (DGCF smallest to largest)
which is one whole step down from Standard tuning (EADG), and the strings are called by their standard tuning names.

I have both a solid metal and a more light weight metal wrapped in rubber. The make it VERRRY quiet. I love it.

Thanks Mitch!! This was really helpful! My wife is definitely not a fan of my sliding cajun double stops!! I think I'll try and get a metal mute so I can muck around without causing trouble!

I bought myself a heavy metal mute (like the one you lost) from Shar and it is a miracle! Very quiet but no distortion! I also bought a metal one coated with rubber and a plain rubber one (I wanted to compare). The metal one is absolutely the way to go if you have downstairs neighbors who are NOT night people.

I'm a beginner. But one thing I found I can do at night without disturbing anyone is practice my left hand fingering just plucking the strings lightly piccicato style.

We put pieces of cardboard inside the ends of one very strident sqeezebox and it helped a tiny bit. You can now get an electronic accordion and play it through headphones but they are very expensive and they neither sound nor feel the same.

I have a fiddle which doesn't project well. I call it Number 3 Fiddle and it is very good for practicing because we have neighbours with a shared wall. It feels very like Number 1 Fiddle and it actually sounds louder under my ear. Fairly close up it sounds as loud as Number 1 but by five feet away the volume on Number 3 is diminished and there is a deadness to the sound - whereas Number 1 is loud and resonant. I picked Number 3 up when I needed a fiddle in an emergency and then discovered it had this unadvertised feature - probably the back not properly tuned. It can't be the only one. It's just how to find a poor projector when it isn't exactly a selling point!

I can still hear the sound, live in an apartment, not good for neighbors
It’s got to be another way to practice without bothering people.
    either that or just quit.

Forget the mutes, I use magnets on either sides of the bridge. It doesn't restrict your view of the strings.

Man. One thing that's rough about getting into the fiddle is that I get that my first $60 fiddle was crappy. But a luthier even called my $350 upgrade with later updated better quality strings, bow, rosin and bridge ... he called it crappy too lol. Like you need to have a $5k violin to be considered moderately decent. Especially bizarre when I hear stories of old cajun fiddlers making their own fiddles out of cigar boxes and cypress branches lol

    • @MitchReedMusicLessons
      @MitchReedMusicLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nah man, more expensive doesn't always mean you can't make those strings sing just like those pricier violins. I've got a story about a player that made his fiddle out of wire from a front door.

I was thinking, I bought my wife a Romanian fiddle for about $100 and it sounds amazing. Rich and warm, but it's not the norm. The struggle is real!

The only truly way I can cut the sound is playing my electric violin unplugged. Even with a rubber practice mute on my acoustic fiddle it will wake my wife.

Hey there, I really hope you’d see this comment, i live in a very conservative household who thinks that practicing music is forbidden and won’t allow me to have a violin. However, i’m really determined in pursuing this and i plan in purchasing a violin behind their knowledge and gonna hide it in my room. Since violin is really loud and it’s gonna be hard to hide, is there any tips you could give me? Like is there some kind of violins which are typically less loud? And is it true that we can plug an electric violin to a headphone?

I realized I didn't answer your question at the end: yes, you can plug an electric violin into headphones. By the way, I had to hide my bass under my bed when I was younger, so I understand. Keep me posted!

I practice with a mute on at night really quietly with my door closed and I swear it's like my dad has this like sixth sense that tells him when I'm practicing the violin late at night. It's kind of scary not going to lie so like I don't think that any amount of mutes will get rid of my dad's sixth sense
