This is a good quick explanation of what makes it sound Cajun. I was at a jam last night and a lot of those people just don't seem to know these basics. In many ways it is easier to play Cajun tunes when you know them. Plus why bothering to tune to the accordion makes more sense. Some of the best double stops etc aren't available when you play tuned standard with a C accordion. But then there is the situation I was in a while ago at Marc Savoy's where I came in and he's playing on an E accordion! A pain in the butt even standard tuned. Ha!

Sounds great. I haven't played violin for 23 years, and I'm trying to get back into it. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Mitch, a friend turned me onto your channel today after I had asked him if he knew of any resources for learning Cajun style fiddling. Great stuff so far - I can't wait to see more! I'm coming from the world of Old-Time music, and I was wondering if it's common/preferred to stay tuned to standard tuning when playing Cajun tunes, or is it more common to cross tune or tune to the key that you are playing in? Some folks will cross-tune with Old-Time music and I was wondering if that's true with Cajun. Thank you!

Hi Darrin, I play my Cajun tunes one octave down. This is a great resource to answer your question. mitchreedmusiclessons.com/?s=cajun+tuning

Hey Mitch, love the way you teach. I am brand new to the fiddle and am wondering does it matter what kind of rosen you use for the Cajun application? Also, I have viewed a number of violin training videos and they cover the way to set up your bow and how to hold it. I haven't found one of your videos that covers that. Can you direct me to a particular video that you already have posted? Thank you!

Great questions, Christine- Any brand of rosin is fine, although it depends more on your climate than your style of playing. You might have inspired a new video with your question!
If you go to my website I have a series called “Fiddle from Scratch”. It’s a series of 6 videos and the very first video covers holding the fiddle and bow, as well as rhythmic bowing and shuffling. Best part is it’s available on DVD, to stream, or to download. Mitch, I would love to buy one of your $20 CDs but I am NOT paying $50 dollars postage to me in France! Have you any plans to make your output digital downloads? Thanks!

I do have a download of my Fiddle from Scratch series at mitchreedmusiclessons.com/downloads/. I also have a streaming subscription service available at mitchreedmusiclessons.com/become-a-member/. Let me know if you have any more questions. I’m glad to help...and btw, I agree that international rates are sometimes very high, especially if you don’t want your order to arrive on the slow boat. .

I’m told the “slide” was used because it allowed music on the fiddle to sound like the bagpipes from Scotland. My family genealogy is Scottish and Nova Scotia French.
