      My parents had a V10 Dodge Ram - and it was pretty decent - One thing about reliability is that do people check over every part of the car? My parents had a fifth wheel attached and went from Canada to the southern US to avoid the cold - so they ran the vehicle for several years and not once used the heater. When they finally did it wasn't working. So did it fail because it wasn't used enough or did it never work to begin with? Let's assume it never worked - well this would never have been reported to JD Power or anyone else.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I do think that they raised the most probable reason for that. RAM is basically making one model, and they've been making it for a while. Vehicles that last longer in the development cycle avoid a lot of the initial quality issues because they've been identified and resolved already in previous model years.

      Problem is then they'd be reviewing decade old cars, which wouldn't help much with a new purchase, as models have likely evolved or changed in that period.

      Too many factors outside of the control of the manufacturer on a vehicle of that age. At least within a year of assembly the issues would mostly be due to build quality.

    90 days is nothing into the ownership dance.
    12 months give a better view. Once the delivery problems are solved.
    We should have a much better view after a year were wear and usage problem will start to show up.

    • @DDanagher
      @DDanagher 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      The point is that JDP has found that there's a very high correlation between the initial 90 days and the following few years. By giving the manufacturers early feedback on its models, the JDP IQS report provides them the opportunity to address the shortcomings. So, the report is useful mostly for that. Up to you if you want to buy the connection between the first 90 days and the longer term.

    JD Power's statement (1:00): "...the study at 90 days gives the customer an early indication of what could be expected after 3 years of ownership. The initial quality numbers also give manufacturers early feedback on their models so that they can put corrective actions in place." Well, I want to know why all automakers don't send out questionairres to their buyers/customers at 90 days, at 6 months, at 1 year, at 2 years, and at 3 years, asking what JD Powers and Consumer Reports ask car owners. It seems to me that automakers would benefit far more from getting feedback directly from their own customers, and a year or two into ownership is much more instructive than 90 days into ownership can possibly be. If I'm an automaker CEO or board of directors, I'd mandate this (i.e., questionaires to all new-vehicle-purchase owners). I'd also like to see some way of statistical data being farmed from dealership service departments to let prospective buyers know which vehicles tend to have what specific problems in a frequent basis.

  • @re-tiredsteve5195

    Not sure how the heck the first 90 days of ownership would have hardly any correlation between long term reliability! To your point, the initial car stinky smells would not last into the 3 year mark you would hope! But the first 90 days as all the new plastic and engine parts give off their smell would. Most new cars wouldn't even have reached their first oil change in 90 days. Now the learning curve for all the new tech would for sure! Many people would indicate their wireless AA or CarPlay doesn't work when most times they either don't have their phones settings adjusted properly or haven't created a profile properly with the cars infotainment system. I speak from experience as I came from a 2009 Murano and in 2022 bought an NX350h. Night and day difference, one is a car the other comparable to the Space Station! I took my time, read the owners manual - well ok not all 800 pages of it - and have now become very familiar & comfortable in how to make adjustments to my car and how it reacts. How does the first 90 days factor into engine failures or EV related issues down the road? Look at the list of recalls that are for cars that are some 3-5 years old and now have suspect transmission issues, safety system issues etc, you couldn't have said anything of this nature was in anyway corollated to the first 90 days of ownership.

    That stink might relate to adhesives used in the cars and VOC (volatile organic compounds) off gasses from the upholstery. These used to give that familiar "new car smell" but the previously used adhesives etc that released a mix of VOCs might have been replaced with new materials that release a stink, not the "new car smell" we all loved.

    As a previous owner of two new BEVs (2020 Kona EV & 2022 Ioniq 5 EV), the lack of timely software updates is a sore point regarding ownership. The adoption of new technology to minimize air drag at the expensive of reality is another. Nothing like a frozen door handle or charge port. At least with charge ports, some manufacturers now use heaters. All door handles will freeze but to have designs where you can't even grab a handle isn't wise.

Consider that The Civic had sporty variants and was very popular with teens who liked to turn them into BOOM cars with stereos and also liked to do donuts in them. The Tercel was ranked 1st the Civic ranked 2nd for reliability. But the Tercel was a "granny car" - no young guys were buying those things. The Honda got driven and driven hard. Indeed, you could make that case for the Mustang and Camaro (both of which I recall doing quite well in the Lemon Aid guide - in fact, better than many if not all of their other cars). My point is that we must look at the way the car is likely to be driven and how well the owner will do the upkeep. A granny car is likely to be babied by the owner more than those 17-year-old Civic owners trying to drift the things with a lead foot.
    How will a Mustang hold up if you drive it purely as a GT car and never take it to the track? Always do the maintenance. Maybe that 3.5/5 goes to a 5/5. If you drive the Tercel like a Civic Type R - maybe it croaks at 80,000km. My dad was that annoying slow driver always puttering at or slightly below the speed limit - always did the maintenance early. We had the atrocious train wreck Ford Aerostar (notoriously unreliable) - well we never had a problem. My point - the type of people who buy Toyota/Lexus are "probably" the type of people who care about reliability and will do the maintenance - the type of people buying the Koreans or Americans (and certainly not the German brands) placed reliability high on the list so they may let the maintenance lapse a bit and perhaps that's why the cars wind up not being reliable? I mean if you can't afford a Corrolla maybe you buy a Mitsubishi Mirage - but if you can't afford the car - you might no be able to afford the maintenance.

    Fortunately, during the first two years, we didn't have any repairs needed on our Hyundai. However, regular maintenance has cost us a significant amount of money. The first annual service was €186, but the second recent one negatively surprise us with €312. Both services only included the required procedures according to the warranty conditions.
    By the way, regarding the new car smell, the previous generation of Honda Civic seemed to have a strong unpleasing initial interior odor, reminiscent of a dollar store.

I give more weight, though, to Consumer Reports' owner surveys. I'm surprised to hear the positive remarks about Chevy. Regarding "new car smells," I once bought a new Acura that made me literally sick during the first two weeks from the "outgassing" of interior plastics, while I remember loving the unique interior smell of brand new Saabs.

    I love my 2020 XT6. It's at 50k kms now and has been pretty reliable. There are stories though of a bad batch of them in both the 2023 and 2024 model years. The problem for a lot of manufacturers is that there moves to bring the supply chains closer to home have resulted in changes and when you make changes, you introduce an opportunity for components that don't measure up. Car makers will get over this hurdle but it's certainly odd to see cars in the fourth or fifth model year suddenly have more problems/100 than in their first few years.

    The should be called The Initial Customer Experience Study. So many things are unrelated to quality. The top 3 issues prove my point, false radar warnings, ACP and AA issues and too many controls built into screens. Most are not quality related. While these things may be important and of value, most people want to know how well it’s put together and how long it will reliably last.

    Will never trust this study. 90 days is a horrible way to assess long term reliability. This list should not get any media coverage. 3 years should be the minimum as most leases are 3 years and also most people will keep a car longer than 3 years. And all the top 90 day vehicles are notorious to break down or have major mechanical issues after three years. Definitely would never buy anything long-term, Stellis or Hyundai and Kia as they are known to struggle past 100 K. Data backs this up.

    Two Comments. From my experience selling vehicles and working with dealers on SSI and CSI, Luxury Buyers, especially those who have driven luxury for a while, expect much more and are more picky. They expect and feel they are paying for perfection. Regarding smell, the problem is most manufacturers set their HVAC default setting for cabin air recycle versus pulling fresh air from the outside. So on a new vehicle, it is recycling the new car smell which can become overwhelming. The second smell issue caused by this is the vehicle smells like bad body odor after a while because the air cabin filter does not get refreshed with outside air. Sales Consultants either don't know this and/or don't tell the customer how to correct these smell issues.

    The problem with these studies is that a panel shaking is an incident and the engine catching fire and killing a family is an incident.
    Many of the winners are simple because being called in for a software update counts as an incident if there are no OTA updates (and depending on how they count it maybe even OTA updates count).

Like the Polestar 2 and Volvo's based upon that platform (aside from the tablet being the hvac, but its easy enough to learn to just use the google assistant to control), or the earlier version of the BMW i4 (as the newest version ditched the more traditional, sporty, console shifter for buttons. Boo on BMW for that boneheaded decision), or even the F150 Lightning with the smaller screen. They're simple to operate, with such a minimal learning curve to get used to.

Good luck with that one. So a Sonata is a Camry? Fascinating! Recalls are just imagined? No study now past three years? I will say the styling of Korean cars has improved 1000% over the latest decade or so. If it is ever fact that they match makes such as Honda, Toyota and Subaru, for long term quality and reliability, we all should be impressed and consider them. Oh, also matching safety. Which model compares to an Outback or Volvo wagon, made in Korea? The Impreza safety, in the real world, compared to ..... I mean to say, in the real world the cars can be involved in accidents.
