Adding a little Paris to your studio portraits is simpler than you might think! Learn how to add a reflection to sunglasses in today's episode.
Start by scaling the scenery down to the right size. Lower the opacity to see how it will look inside of the lenses. Be aware that only one of the lenses needs to look good, because it will be copied!
Next, select the area right around the lens with the Marquee tool. Go to Select - Inverse, then press the delete key. Now you should have a little square of reflection over one eye. Copy that layer and move it over to be on top of the second eye. Now make the reflection layer invisible and select the Magic Wand tool. We use this to select out the lenses (be sure that “sample all layers” is checked). Use the refine edge tool to soften or bring the edge in a bit. Group those layers with themselves and hit the layer mask button.
To style the reflection so that it doesn’t look fake, create a levels adjustment layer. Darken the darks and mess with the output levels so that it looks more like a reflection. You can add a Hue/Saturation level as well, to match the color from the original lens. In this case, we make it a little bluer and lessen the saturation.
Being able to see through the glasses a little bit is extremely helpful in terms of realism. We use a black to transparent gradient to select areas to be darker, and others to be more see-through.
Now the part you’ve all been waiting for…time to blow some minds! Select the layer that the reflection is on with the Marquee tool. Go to Filter - Distort - Spherize. From here it’s very simple to adjust the slider to a certain amount of curve. This bulges the image out and makes it appear less flat!

Quick questions here. Every time I'm pasting something I copied form one layer into another layer, I'm losing my selection of that particular part I'm pasting.
    I must have changed something...
You know how I can keep the selection, even after I pasted it? So that I can use that selection to do a blur or whatever..

Hi Aaron, Thank you for another excellent deconstruction. I will add that these days it isn't altogether common to find a tutorial channel where the instructor isn't either smug, preachy, or just plain self-interested, at some point or another. You (or more precisely your PHLEARN persona) demonstrate a level of grace that can only continue to serve you well. Your style of delivery, recognition of the fact that there is more than one way to accomplish any given task and the tacit acknowledgement that your tutorials are as much a journey of discovery for you as they are for us, make your channel infinitely watchable and thoroughly enjoyable. Congratulations.
My tutorial request may in all probability require a combination of photography as well as post-processing in Photoshop and is consequently ideally suited to being "PHLEARNed".
My request: Would it be possible to create (or recreate) the ethereal, atmospheric look in these now famous photos.
    www.dpreview.com/articles/1115848347/russian-mother-captures-atmospheric-photos--family-portraits-of-sons-on-farm
The images, first seen (by me at least) on dpreview.com over a year ago, ostensibly show the work of Elena Shumilova, a Russian mother on a rural farm. They were touted as the amazing work of a highly talented, self-taught amateur and appear to have been captured in an amazing foggy wonderland forever trapped in the golden hour.
More images from Elena can be found here www.flickr.com/photos/75571860@N06
I will add that while there has been some discussion regarding the provenance of the images and the purported amateur status of Ms.Shumilova, the sublime quality of the work and their undeniable beauty remains unassailable.
Therefore, if the effect(s) captured and/or created can be achieved (or enhanced) through some combination of prime lenses, gelled flash photography, blur filters and post-processing generated fog, I believe that I would not be the only PHLEARN subscriber interested in hearing your take on it.
    Warmest regards,
    Edward M.

Great tut especially looking at the technique. I believe though you missed two points. First I believe you should flip, in this case the Paris picture first to get a realistic reflection. Second thought is: Both glasses are in the same pane (hope this is the correct word). So I believe it's impossible to have the same reflection in both glasses. This would only be possible when the left glass is bent towards the camera. Taking the whole flipped Paris image and mask the glasses out is more realistic.

Hey Adam. Just a thought. Should the reflection from a window or sunglasses be blurry or not in focus? The stuff in the reflection is not on the same focal area as the person, right? If the person is 3 meters away and the imaginary scenery is 150 meters away... Not to go all physics but just wanted to know your thoughts. :)

I will give you Thanks a lot , for this tutorial , because First time I saw this reflection tutorial by you, but there is one problem created in my case when I apply this tutorial on my subject. As per your tutorial you had select the sunglasses by magic wand tool with , selected of that layer which is invisible. After selection you will go on refine edge option,
But one thing AARON in my case with my subject, when I select the invisible area of that where my object is situated, and then go on my refine edge option, at this time my refine edge option is not highlighted , but when I go throw the background layer, it will highlighted, please guide me or reply me how . I will check all the option , which you had tell in your this tutorial.

I think I missed something. When you add the gradient you appear to be able to add more than one gradient to the layer mask. When I do this the new gradient replaces the old one. What am I doing wrong?

    • @terrymcnamara9854
      @terrymcnamara9854 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ignore the above. I had 'black to white' gradient selected, not 'foreground to transparent'.
