Hello curious person who scrolled down to see the pinned comment. Just a few things. For starters, some things I got wrong/need to clarify: Ok so Olivia didn't develop all of the critters. For instance Dr. Ada Bryon actually developed the Hatch, and unnamed employee B363 made the Bammoth. There were also a lot of other side stories going between specific dupes themselves. From pitching in to buy a birthday cake to leaking information to the press and getting your brains siphoned out, there's a decent bit that I've left out from this video. I did this because I felt that it didn't really contribute that much to the main story of this game, which was my focus. If you're interested in learning more, I recommend checking out some reddit posts, or just scrolling through the database in debug mode to unlock all the entries immediately. This video was a lot of work, and in complete honesty I bit off more than I could chew. I struggled a lot in production with how to visually represent information in a game where there is well, next to no visual representation. Regardless I'm proud of the final product. And yes, I did draw that image of Rick Sanchez holding an AK-47. Another video is in the works. This is a big one though, and it's gonna take me longer than usual especially since school is back in session now. If you're interested in that or any of my other projects, join the discord! Link in the description. Also don't look at the bottom left corner of the screen really hard at 5:19 Cheers.
Thank you so much for FINALLY making a lore video! Like you said, nobody's done so yet, even though the lore of this game is actually the PERFECT fodder for Game Theory.
I had a buddy in an ONI discord and we discussed the lore. It was quite a doozy that nobody has compiled all the ingame texts yet Considering don't starve has hundreds of lore videos about Maxwell and wagstaff
Only thing I would've added is a little more info on the people who became the dupes because there's some interesting bits in their backstories to add here and there. Like Amari who was leaking information to outside journalist Quinn, who was investigating Gravitas, but their secret interactions were caught when he brought them in to actually see the facility. To cover up the danger of the story leaking to the outside world, they (presumably) had a chunk of their brains cut out and were... let's say 'conditioned' to be more friendly toward the company. But other than that, great lore dive.
In case anyone was wondering, Ceres is a real planet in our Solar System between Mars and Jupiter, sitting inside the asteroid belt. Unlike in the game, however, its core is no longer molten and has solidified into rock with a later of frozen water under the surface.
With no longer molten do you mean that it has frozen over our time as a species or it was already frozen before that? Becaude if its the former damn thats an event.
@@lucasarmas9198 Humans haven't been around long enough as a species for an entire dwarf planet's core to cool. It would take a long time--like tens or hundreds of millions of years. Homo sapiens has only been around for maybe one million years
I have always unironically loved that ONI is this incredibly adorable and cute game with lots of warm and fuzzy vibes that nevertheless has a backstory/lore full of nightmare-inducing cosmic horror. Finally having a lore video of it is thus fabulous. (Also Klei apparently likes to reuse names at times, as I was amused when I first realized one of the main characters here is an Olivia, while Invisible Inc is also headed up by an Olivia.)

Not sure if this an Easter egg, but I believe there's a correlation between the thermometer of Don't Starve and the gold amalgam of ONI. Is about how the thermometer work if it is made of gold

Christ. Like, I managed to get the gist of Earth having blown up from some manmade disaster, and duplicants being stuck on what is assumed to be a chunk that flew off Earth. But damn it goes deep and feels like the plot of a horror story, with Earth sealed under a bubble of our own creation to avoid affecting the universe with our mess, and then the bubble breaks and Earth finishes collapsing and time anomalies become common.
the scariest part for me that i realized was that all humans were probably still alive, trapped in time before we broke the containment field. theres probably freshly dead human corpses flying around in spaced out
I'm sorry but the lore suggests that gravitas is essentially Aperture but more successful, so if you try to rebuild earth, you will make a million other amazing things but probably crush the earth into dust or mantis dna, so maybe we di something COMPLETELY UNRELATED and in the process rebuild earth and save everyone with a side of giant exploding space magnets.
As a long time ONI player who's frustratedly tried to piece together a lot of this info himself... THANK YOU. You did a great job tying together a lot of things I knew with some key bits that I didn't have, and presenting it in an entertaining way. Also, +1 for having your own alternate histories in the video as a narrative device!
I mean, it's a game made by the same studio that created Don't Starve, a game series that has some of the most convoluted and interesting progressing storyline and mysteries I have *EVER* encountered, of course it was bound to have an interesting story too! But for some reason nobody was yet to thoroughly check it out, until you.
Loved the video but I have to say that if the asteroid are from different timelines ( 15:50 ), we are actively making things worse because the further you go from the " main " colony the harder is for the duplicant to survive. Sorry for my bad english
I’m surprised the lore for the game is not well documented yet. From the small amount of time I’ve played, I’ve only found scraps of info that lead to something much bigger going on than just trying to survive the asteroid that your dupes found themselves in.
THANK YOU!!!! I'm obsessed with Klei entertainment's lore on every game, and despite not playing ONI, I love watching the animated shorts and often wondered the lore of it, I love this video!!

This video is phenomenal! A lot of comments have already commented on the production values and the research you did, but there's one specific thing I want to highlight: the use of clips from media to add some detail and further explain things. This video is legitimately a great example of how to use clips to not just keep attention, but make a video entertaining and simultaneously help the viewer understand what you're trying to convey. For example, using the Spider-Man 2 fusion reactor whenever the Time's Bow was mentioned helps to categorize the Time's Bow as a potentially revolutionary new source of energy, on par with (or better than) a Fusion reactor. Editing a clump of neutronium over the tritium helps establish the link between it and the Bow. Even the placement of that particular clip is well done: although tritium is a fuel source and neutronium a waste product, you put that clip after talking about all the ways neutronium is harmful, and the sprites from klei make it clear that neutronium's "thing" is that it is good at gumming up the works. You even showed a clip of the fusion reactor breaching containment when you talked about Time's Bow going critical. Pretty much whenever you show a clip, it's not just something to keep our attention, it's something *relevant*, something that would be helpful to illustrate the concept to someone who is not as familiar with Sci-Fi tropes. I could go on and on about all the examples, and how each one is simultaneously entertaining, relevant, helps to convey the point you're making/is illustrative of the general concept, and not from an obscure source no one's heard about, but I'd be here all day; which is hopefully the best compliment I can give this video. Best of all, you didn't repeat any clips, as far as I could tell!
It was fun finally seeing someone compile all of the little data notes left behind in ONI. Now we just have to live with the knowledge that our favourite dupes that we've got 3-5 copies of in one base are all eventually going to learn that they're basically the same person, just slightly different.
ONI is one of my favorite games of all time! (Hence the avatar). I love how they do their storytelling -- it's there if you want to explore it and peel the onion. Even after all those hours playing it, I missed those subtle differences in the logs that you went over towards the end of the video

It's what I really love about the lore, and the game itself. It's an ADORABLE, brainy, difficult game. But the lore it's just dark as fuck and clashes so hard with the rest of the game's tone, yet make perfect sense. It honestly an impressive feat, pulling that off. As for your video, not only is it really, really well made, the script easy to follow and you've avoided the TH-camr trap of being overly energetic or snarky for edginess sake, you have successfully managed to fill out all the blanks I had on the lore of ONI. From a really old, and old-school, gamer: thank you, sir!

This is a great video and it’s so strange that this game is so scarce on the story when it is definitely there. Klei’s storytelling is actually very similar in this game to their other game Don’t Starve in a way; where the animated shorts move the story forward and in-game is where you learn the details. Still Don’t Starve has plenty of lore keepers who follow the storyline intensely but for some reason it is non-existent here.
Hold up. I found this 20 ish minute video on youtube shorts. Looked at the comments expecting to see someone mention the 20 minute long short but i found timestamps instead. I BROKE THE SYSTEM.
I didn't expect it's gonna be that crazy! Especially the last part, I have always thought it's kind of worthless to read the colony logs or whatever the name is, because many red herrings. I don't always have enough time to read too, playing the game without dying already consume a lot of time. Turns out its not just bunch of red herrings.. Great video man!
YEESSS THANK YOU FINALLY SOMEONE ADRESSES THE ACTUAL LORE OF ONI!!! For real tho I always wondered about the lore and why there are absolutely NO VIDEOS about it. Now I can finally rest in peace as those lore entries start to make sense. I loved reading the different e-mails and encrypted notes but could never really connect the dots. Thank you again for finally adressing the ONI lore situation.
I need to get back into this game I think the intention is that you play the game and learn the lore as you go through it. But that never really happens
Fun fact: The Colony I.A have feelings, when a Duplicant dies you receive a log telling that Duplicants are really bound on each other, and are sad, and you (The I.A) are sad too, in your way.
Oh, excellent! I appreciate what you've done here. I love ONI, but I am not great at it. 200 hours and never even breached the surface. I always end up reaching a point where everything is a mess, and it would take so long to fix/cleanup that I end up abandoning it and making a new colony later on.
Pretty fun video. I haven't played since before it was complete, so I was missing a lot of this as it was new to me. It's a heckin fun game, lore aside. Anyway good job.
A fun video idea I think that you kind of had in this video would be to talk about all the duplicants past lives that are documented or even theorize who they were when they were human. Such as how Ada was an animal geneticist and that is reflected in her appearances in the animations as her job is always the animal caretaker.
I can't believe it, you kept cloning yourself in this video just like the duplicates of Oxygen Not Included itself *2:11* *3:15* *4:36* *5:50* Amazing video, by the way. You are an extremely underrated content creator I've never heard of, really hope you become much larger soon. Although I've never played Oxygen Not Included myself, this gave me an even greater appreciation for Klei as a studio with amazing lore making cappabilities. This almost beats Don't Starve in terms of crazy convoluted and extremely interesting lore that's for some reason _almost_ never explored on TH-cam and super underrated.
I've read bits here and there over the last 5 years of playing but in no way did I understand the full scope of this tragedy and how the expansions fit into it. Thanks for this complete Lore explanation!

me when the first oxygen not included lore video ive ever seen pops up on my recommended... while im literally playing it
🤯🤯🤯
me also realizing you used rainworld music for a part of it, which is literally my next most prevalent hyperfix:
🤯🤯🤯
shorline! 11:22
omnomnom im gonna eat all the rainworld music
Finally somebody is covering ONI lore! AND the editing is perfect too!
@philip-antoinechevalier5855 there's actually like 500 things I would have done differently so I wouldn't have called it perfect editing
But oh well
0:38 there is a story?
Oh right those things i just instantly close
YEESSS THANK YOU FINALLY SOMEONE ADRESSES THE ACTUAL LORE OF ONI!!!
For real tho I always wondered about the lore and why there are absolutely NO VIDEOS about it. Now I can finally rest in peace as those lore entries start to make sense. I loved reading the different e-mails and encrypted notes but could never really connect the dots. Thank you again for finally adressing the ONI lore situation.
Glad you found it helpful!
This was a great one! Been a fan for years, and I knew literally nothing about any of this!
I did not expect this deep of lore from a seemingly simple game, great vid
. . . I had no idea OnI had lore. Not that I've gotten far in the game, I'm bad at it.
The result is astounding good ass video dude! Enjoyed it all the way through
Awesome, I've been waiting for someone to make a deep dive like this :D
Great work!!!
I briefly dipped my toes into the game and only played around 3.300 hours - and i never knew the full extent of the lore. Thanks for clearing it up.
I need to get back into this game
I think the intention is that you play the game and learn the lore as you go through it. But that never really happens
about time some one made a lore video for oxygen not included
I clicked on the videos due to the TARDIS on the thumbnail, but I stayed for the interesting lore
I have about 150 hours into this game and I just learned like 95% of what you just said. Great video, thank you!
i wouldnt even know where to start finding out that there is lore out there somewhere.... this was fun
FINALLY!!! SOMEONE has done a video on ONI lore! :))
oh i love this, and the rain world background music is such a treat too!
Holy shit 5 pebsi
Finally someone condensing all this info into a proper story!
as an 3500hrs veteran on this game, i approved this video
Great video! I loved every second of it and i hope you make more like this
Fun fact: The Colony I.A have feelings, when a Duplicant dies you receive a log telling that Duplicants are really bound on each other, and are sad, and you (The I.A) are sad too, in your way.
There is nothing more self-destructive then a time travel for a story. I have never seen it work and i never will.
Never thought that Harry Potter would explain to me a lore of ONI
After 500h into this game I finally have a clue what is going on
Interesting, now Mr.Meep you need to go back to making Mushbar or we all going to die from starvation.
Ain't no way you just added shaded citadel OST in between the video xD
Amazing! You've earned my sub + like for making this video. Thousands of hours into the game and found out I knew so little still!
Not me laying so much rain world i recognise EVERY SOUND TRACK
A fun video idea I think that you kind of had in this video would be to talk about all the duplicants past lives that are documented or even theorize who they were when they were human. Such as how Ada was an animal geneticist and that is reflected in her appearances in the animations as her job is always the animal caretaker.
Such high quality from a small channel. If you don't go big it'll be a crime
5:25 RAINWORLD MUSIC HEARD.
Well done, sir! I read the journal here and there but this game gets so distracting bouncing from one disaster to another it’s easy to get behind.
Rain world music!!!! Great video btw!
I can't believe it, you kept cloning yourself in this video just like the duplicates of Oxygen Not Included itself *2:11* *3:15* *4:36* *5:50*
Amazing video, by the way.
@NickAndriadze thanks so much! Yeah the printing pod was acting up again so more Michaels showed up
@@MichaelHulala Oh wow, thanks a lot for replying.
The clones seem very nice though!
FINALLY A LORE OVERVIEW YOU KING
10:57 that scream was just beautiful, like an cherry on top of pie
Writer of OnI finally gets the appreciation
I've read bits here and there over the last 5 years of playing but in no way did I understand the full scope of this tragedy and how the expansions fit into it. Thanks for this complete Lore explanation!
Yessss I’ve spent the past month trying to piece everything together.
