They never claim to be perfect and actively work to fix their shortcomings. From there the mere sight of a full federation fleet not on the defensive but jumping into a rebel occupied sector could convince some of the rebels there to simply surrender on the spot, with the more fanatical ones appropriately dealt with.

15:45 - mantis ships only ever have mantis and engi, no rockmen 35:10 - i interpreted this as the mantis not displaying the rockmens internal organs, not as rockmen not having interal organs (which i think makes a lot more sense) 37:10 - i interpreted this as wrong place wrong time, basically the rockmen thinking you were some previous fight that followed them to finish them off, not necessarily xenophobia 41:10 - i actually think the latter makes sense, because we can see them spontaneously making crystals in game (their active ability) 44:06 - the fact that the crystals dont recieve outsiders kindly could be due to a shift in attitude (its clearly been at least a while since ruwen left after all) 44:28 - i think the idea of a group of rebellious crystals wanting to reopen the link to the rest of the galaxy is the most plausible, and the reason ruwen is in the pod is because something went wrong and that was the only way to stay alive. perhaps all his comrades are dead? 45:30 - maybe crystals just live a really long time? 48:24 - i would hesitate to call the ponies intelligent - we dont have enough evidence for that imo. the free engi outcome in that event could be simple instinct or just chance. 49:57 - fed b does not actually break the theme - this dude was turned into a bird iirc
Oh damn that's a fair bit! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment this, that fact about him turning into a bird was really cool, although Wikipedia says his daughter did instead so I'm not sure...
Definitely a lot of Star Trek influence here. The Mantis are like the Klingons with their warrior culture. The Slugs are like the Ferengi with their deception and desire for personal wealth and the Rockmen are like the Romulans, isolationist and xenophobic. That being said they've crafted it into their own universe brilliantly. This game truly is a masterpeice.
The Zoltan and Vulcans have a number of similarities too. Wise, Elder races with advanced tech and propensity towards diplomacy. Plus, both are the key ally to their respective Federation's.
For the cryo pod considering it's found in a damaged ship most likely the ship was trying to evacuate to the homeworlds but was most likely disabled in the process with the crew going into cryo to wait for help the they knew may never show up
This man right here managed to dig out the lore of a roguelike game the gameplay of which is basically just "kill enemy and don't die and maybe pick a dialogue choice", mad respect.
Hmm, where have I heard of a Federation or Republic that hired mercenaries to fight a war, looses a war and then refuses to pay the mercenaries and the mercenaries then go to war against that Republic, have the Republic on the ropes and then get crushed by the Republic at the 11th hour... The Mercenary War of Carthage.
2:10 in.... when you open all the doors, always close the ones to the medbay. yes, the enemy will break the door to get in, but they always try to get to the room with the most oxygen left, so you can force an 'i win' fight by making them fight you in the medbay.
I like to think that the Lanius are just pragmatists. It's not that they're being "good" or "merciful" per se (though some individuals might) but rather that they'd rather nab resources they won't have to fight somebody over and generally avoid unnecessary combat whenever possible to avoid having to do repairs or use otherwise precious resources.
At 55:00 You are almost certainly correct about Stealth B being a reference to Mass Effect's Normandy SR1/SR2. The first Normandy was built co-operatively by the Alliance (Human) and Turians (Alien) as a prototype stealth cruiser. This matches a similar progeny in FTL. Great video, and yes, this game is so full of Star Trek that being a Trekkie/Trekker makes it a special treat. Sincerely- A stranger from Scotland, who only just got every FTL achievement after a decade of chipping away. That Rock ship secret sector achievement *SUCKED*!
I am only at 19:29 in the vid, but i highly implore everyone to check out FTL multiverse. It really fleshes out the races and lore to an insane level, to the point where the palette swaps of ships are now their own sub faction. Also this video was a nice gem to find.
I had a sort of similar theory/idea about the 'secret data' you had. I assumed it was you the player, who was themselves an advanced ai, moreso than any before it. Since I believe the game says you are transporting/carrying the data to the rebels and delivering it to them, and that's the only thing I can think of that you're transporting, so the data isn't intel, but rather literal code for the ai. This is sorta referenced i think in the achievement referencing HAL, and is also why you need a pilot to jump, even though it's clear other ships can do automated jumps and it's odd that a pilot needs to be physically there to push the jump button, it's so you don't decide to mutiny/kill the crew, since you would be stranded and killed by scrappers or the rebel fleet, and is also why you can pause time and do things nearly instantaneously in game time, since you can process things much much faster due to onboard computing. I like the one you talked about in the video though as well!
Used to work from home at a call center job, in a department that got maybe 5-6 calls per hour. Literally played FTL my whole entire shift on my personal laptop next to me
Humans are boring? They come in the most varieties, even having two genders and 4 skins of each. Also they learn faster. Clearly, they're meant to inherit the galaxy!
The Lanius, more likely, use O2 to rust metal as part of a digestive process. This would make the process less deliberate and more biological (if not organic).
"ive been playing a lot of ftl recently" arent we all? its like a few other games in the way you play for a week straight and then drop for months. (also if you have a decade to spare do multiverse lore)

FTL is a hidden gem for sure. There's this one guy making an FTL 3d animation story on YT. I heard his name get some praise in another video, that's how i found FTL.
If a rebel group of human supremacist are able to take on and beat an established multi species federation, I would think the other species are lesser too, or hindering/harming the galactic advancement The federation was not unified and the aliens are not even united within their own species
You probably will miss this but you GOTTA check out the mod called “Multiverse”. It takes everything you talk about in this video and expands on it in an awesome way. May even make for a couple of good videos!
I have actually played quiet a but of Multiverse, I just didn't mention it here cuz I wanted to only cover the vanilla game's lore. Could be a video in the future though ;)
I've played this game for an ungodly amount of time and i found this quite fascinating, I don't think I paid enough attention to the flavor text. For example I thought that the slug pleasure barge was something they made up for multiverse (I love how they flesh out so much obscure stuff from the game). Great video. Also DA-SR stands for "direct action - stealth reconnaissance" apparently, I found this a while back in a comment when digging through the game's files.
@@SaadTheGlad oh that’s fair enough, it definitely needs a lot more digging for anything that goes beyond the original game, especially the extra endings and sylvan lol
18:37 I think it's more along the lines of the Mantis trader being worried you'll be blown up before he can trade with you. Imagine how many times he's had paying customers coming over only for a warrior to kill them and take the scrap for themselves also was hoping you'd talk more about how it's possible that any Mantis at all would be working with the Federation, like how they ever got a Mantis crew to pilot the Mantis ship, or how they seem to have some kind of honor system where if you save their life they are forever loyal to you
The guy who helpd to write all of this game's lore also did the world building for subnautica. Also if your wondering why the second subnautica was abysmal (hah) it's because they fired this guy and replaced him with a-diversity-hire. I always wondered why that second subnautica was so bad so I looked up who made the first one then cross referenced it with the second one and untangled what happened. The guy who wrote this and subnautica's lore understands world building and he understands what scares people in a compelling way. This is why you should never buy a second release of a game title without checking to see if it's by the same dev team because Companies, brands, trademarks, copywriter holders, and stock holders are all things that do not actually make good games. People makes good games, passionate people specifically. Follow the passionate people not the hollowed out corpo's pretending to be them and you'll never be disappointed by a game you purchase
the idea that the secret is the AI, is one I agree with. And i believe its now basically been canonized by fans of FTL thanks to the Kestral adventures expanding on this idea.
I love how much lore and gameplay are tied together. Learning about alien races shows you what their strengths and weaknesses are, which are also hints on what to expect from them and why should you try and recruit one aboard. On top, diversity of your crew is very fundamental for a good run so you are encouraged to it, which fits the federations lore of believing in racial union. And because rebels are regarded as racist, you for certain can expect only humans aboard when you see their color schemes. It just very solid world building where learning it yields actual useful information, and it isn't just bunch of fun trivia for hell of it.
There is a FTL fan series (Fully animated.) that expanded on the lore and made a proper story that filled in quite a few lost gaps. I'd recommend giving it a watch. Though I need to give a warning, early episodes aged a bit like milk due to the creator's inexperience when they were still learning. But it improves after the first five episodes. FTL Kestrel Adventures.
ik it's months old at this point but I belive the "Man of War" ship is called after our actual ship type of the same name, known for being very large and sporting MANY weapons. Much like the design of the ship in game. The type Man of War was taken from an 18th-century Portuguese ship.
I always thought the Lanius were a partial reference to the Shrike from the Hyperion Cantos. Enigmatic, spiky metal beings, so named for their tendency to impale victims on thorns (like rl shrikes, aka "butcher birds" do to store food on thorny tree branches). Lanius is the genus of many shrike species. Spiky, metal, enigmatic, bird references. Similarities end there, but it's a fun lil nod.
For the crystals secrecy and weird way of being rediscovered, could it be that a third party interfered, trying to cover up/destroy the efforts of rediscovery?
*Everyone should watch that fan made FTL Kestrel Adventures series .. thats a hidden gem!* Nice FTL lore video, kudos. I love this game so much. And I like lore videos. Score. Have fun
If you enjoyed this you should play ✨FTL Multiverse✨. It's a mod that has more depth than a sequel, and it is honestly better than the base game. 10/10, lines up with and expads on most of the lore discussed here
FTL was ruined for me because I won on my first run. I got what I later learned were god-rolls for enemies and gear; I used 3x teleport bombs to ruin the interior of the flagship and make it almost useless.
In regards to the Crystals, they may just be Corundum: The crystalline variants of Aluminum are more commonly known as Sapphires and Rubies, though depending on what other minerals are part of the structure they can come in a variety of colors. The crystals tend to be very strong, albeit not as strong as diamonds - they rank a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale to the diamond's maximum score of 10 - and notably, they're used for making powerful lasers as sapphires and their sister gems are able to achieve tricky to reach and rare frequencies when used as lenses in lasers, and can be "mode-locked" to create extremely short pulses.
So my take on Federation-Mantis War: Mantis attacks the Engie and because of the Federation Charter the Humans and Zoltans are obligated to join. Federation is first in the fray but the Zoltans delay giving the reason that they need to updated their stratagems before entering. Mantis begin enslaving Engie and force them to make defenses and weapons for the Mantis to use against the Federation, which causes massive casualties among the humans and another delay from the Zoltans. When the human delegation asks the Zoltan council if they are going honor the Federation Charter and assist the Engie the Zoltan ambassador responded due to the Mantis change in tactics and weapons they need to alter their stratagems as well, but they promise they will enter and when they do victory will be imminent, they just need access to Engie Ion weapons. The Engie exchange the technology. (I could add in a part of Rock Salvagers and Slug Mercenaries joining in not on the Mantis side but not friendly to the Federation) Eventually the Zoltans enter the war and sweep through Mantis Forces. The Zoltan shields prevent Mantis warriors from teleporting over n boarding actions where they are the strongest and Mantis weapons are frozen by Ion cannon blasts. Zoltan hover vehicles out maneuver the swift Mantis warriors on the ground and Zoltan beam weaponry slices through Mantis Ship and Soldier alike. The Mantis flees Engie territory taking a lot of slaves with them but once they left Engie space the Federation was prevented to pursue as the Zotlans argued that the charter stops at Federation Member space and to leave it is no longer a defensive action and offensive actions have to be unanimously agreed upon by all members. The Humans then proposed an invasion of Mantis space to free any Federation citizen held under slavery by the Mantis, the Zoltans disagreed as it was a needless action that would cost too much. The Engie sided with the Zoltan and since nearly all the slaves were Engie as they often surrendered immediately. If any one had the greatest cause for an invasion it would be the Engie and since they were opposed the Federation would stop at the edge of Mantis space and the Federation-Mantis war was over. Now when it came time for reconstruction and rebuilding it would be a disagreement that shattered the Federation. The Humans suffered the most fatalities because they would often fight even to the death in hopeless situations where Engie would immediately surrender once probability of victory and retreat both reached 0.01% for an outcome. As for the Zoltans they were last in the war and their involvement was so brief they barely suffered any casualties. The Humans agued since they made the largest sacrifice they should oversee rebuilding of the Federation Fleet. The Engie would argue that since the war happened in their space the reconstruction of their territory should be the priority. The Zoltans argued since their weapons and forces were the "reason" for their victory over the Mantis they were due compensation which shocked the human delegation. One human representative was overheard calling the Zoltan ambassador a "Glowing Slug" which greatly insulted the Zoltans. The Federation may have won the war, but they lost the peace and the Human Rebellion began.
I do wish we could play as the Rebels in FTL. I find them rather appealing. Then again, that would take too much away from the gameplay, though I'm sure other options could be given to the player to compensate. Never quite understood why we never got an FTL 2. The game was certainly popular enough.
They likely were only willing to respect it while they were in acting combat against the federation, once they felt that their victory was guaranted they dropped the charade and invaded
Hey, I loved your video! Personally, I've always viewed the Lanius as basically like cicadas, but rather than coming out on a natural cycle, they surface depending on the cycle of war and peace. I also personally thought that the Lanius would suffocate or otherwise die in an oxygenated environment, just like how some anaerobic bacteria are killed by oxygen. It also never occurred to me that they could be machines. In my mind, they were always organic, just somehow metal-based rather than carbon-based. Also, I always had a soft spot for the Rockmen of Vrachos IV, since most of my victories have come from Rock ships. Although they are Xenophobic, there's something I like about their strange sense of honor forged by hardship, like that highlighted by the rock cruiser quest.
Thanks a lot! Ooh those are some cool thoughts on the Lanius, I love how every player who thought about the lore for a bit has their own headcanon on certain parts they find the most interesting lol
you where right for the lanuis, they are made of metals. Most metal of the periodic table oxyde. oxyde ? Rust. So, it is poison for them. They absorb the oxygen maybe to prevent rust ?
I think it was proven that female mantis don’t actually make a habit of eating their mates unless they are anxious for food and don’t know where their next meal will come I didn’t fact check this too deeply so could be wrong but a lot of different sources claimed this to be the case
51:56 i close my eyes for 3 sec and i though i was watching soma for a second... edit i feel deja vu on the ship... i mean i watch it last watch and here we are
I'm going to give my two cents on the stasis pod. My headcanon is that there may have been another isolation period, hundreds of years before the current one. It's possible that crystals might have had a cycle similar to the lanius but more diplomacy oriented, as in getting fed up with everyone's shit and finally closing themselves off forever. I assume that this stasis pod was made before the second isolation in a time where they were much more hopeful in the races of the galaxy and just had to take a break.

@@federationprime
I'd prefer to say the rebel flagship plays a lot less recklessly, the background for the flagship fight is always rebel ships, no matter where you are, and the way you're described chasing it makes me imagine you're the one pushing into the rebel formation where the other ships cannot follow you and merely cover you so you don't get ASB'd.

Actually slugs did originate in the nebula, thier homeworld is a nebula sector
15:45 - mantis ships only ever have mantis and engi, no rockmen
35:10 - i interpreted this as the mantis not displaying the rockmens internal organs, not as rockmen not having interal organs (which i think makes a lot more sense)
37:10 - i interpreted this as wrong place wrong time, basically the rockmen thinking you were some previous fight that followed them to finish them off, not necessarily xenophobia
41:10 - i actually think the latter makes sense, because we can see them spontaneously making crystals in game (their active ability)
44:06 - the fact that the crystals dont recieve outsiders kindly could be due to a shift in attitude (its clearly been at least a while since ruwen left after all)
44:28 - i think the idea of a group of rebellious crystals wanting to reopen the link to the rest of the galaxy is the most plausible, and the reason ruwen is in the pod is because something went wrong and that was the only way to stay alive. perhaps all his comrades are dead?
FTL is a heavily modified, largely automated, Star Trek ship management board game that the devs played.
I think all sci fi and fantasy kinda blends and has its archetypes.
I think there's more than a little Starflight in it too. That's an old, very obscure game, but the Slug vibe a lot like the Spemin.
41:44 piss actually contains ammonia and would be commonly used to wash clothes until more...savoury solutions were accessible
It's also stored in the balls
It also somewhat neutralizes chlorine gas
For the cryo pod considering it's found in a damaged ship most likely the ship was trying to evacuate to the homeworlds but was most likely disabled in the process with the crew going into cryo to wait for help the they knew may never show up
This man right here managed to dig out the lore of a roguelike game the gameplay of which is basically just "kill enemy and don't die and maybe pick a dialogue choice", mad respect.

The Mercenary War of Carthage.
2:10 in.... when you open all the doors, always close the ones to the medbay. yes, the enemy will break the door to get in, but they always try to get to the room with the most oxygen left, so you can force an 'i win' fight by making them fight you in the medbay.
Ohh that's why sometimes they don't go to the medbay. Good tip, thanks
@@SaadTheGlad no worries. :)
Oh yeahh that makes a lot of sense too
At 55:00 You are almost certainly correct about Stealth B being a reference to Mass Effect's Normandy SR1/SR2.

This video did a great job laying out things even I've not considered after years and years of regular enjoyment. It definitely deserves more views!
Thank you very much!

Very happy to see this game getting some love after all these years. This one has been one of my all time favourites. Period.
If a rebel group of human supremacist are able to take on and beat an established multi species federation, I would think the other species are lesser too, or hindering/harming the galactic advancement
The federation was not unified and the aliens are not even united within their own species

also was hoping you'd talk more about how it's possible that any Mantis at all would be working with the Federation, like how they ever got a Mantis crew to pilot the Mantis ship, or how they seem to have some kind of honor system where if you save their life they are forever loyal to you
Oh, hey, I know you! I'm glad TH-cam brought me back to your channel.
Welcome back!
Holy shit I didn't know they're the same people that makes so much sense. I love Subnautica's lore and worldbuilding as much as I love FTL's.

I’ve heard about FTL but I’ve never played it, I think I’ll pick it up when I can
the idea that the secret is the AI, is one I agree with. And i believe its now basically been canonized by fans of FTL thanks to the Kestral adventures expanding on this idea.
2:20 To be fair to the Rebels, 99% of the alien ships I come across even as a Federation, we try to kill each other.
4:22 why is human a boring race, it is actually quite good with almost no downsides
Venomous lizards are much more common than you might expect. 😅
I'm playing FTL while watching this. Total coincidence, I swear.
Yup, I mentioned that in the video ;)

Thank you for the comment! I knew there'd be the odd crystal expert watching
@@SaadTheGlad Haha, thanks! I wouldn't say I'm an expert, more an enthusiast.
Just like FTL, I got absorbed in this, and didn't realise how much time had past... Unlike FTL, this only did that for an hour.
This is funny because the Zoltan were mostly assholes to me lol
51:35 I know that you didn't forget about the Komodo dragon. It's not only the largest lizard but also venomous.
Are we going to get a Lore dive on the legendary Multiverse Mod?
Which includes: Rockmen religious war
Zoltan religious war
What they did with the mantis is awesome too! I don’t wanna spoil it tbh but damn those people did a good job that mod
So my take on Federation-Mantis War:
Mantis attacks the Engie and because of the Federation Charter the Humans and Zoltans are obligated to join.
(I could add in a part of Rock Salvagers and Slug Mercenaries joining in not on the Mantis side but not friendly to the Federation)
Eventually the Zoltans enter the war and sweep through Mantis Forces.

Hahah thank you :)
I do wish we could play as the Rebels in FTL. I find them rather appealing.
Then again, that would take too much away from the gameplay, though I'm sure other options could be given to the player to compensate.
Never quite understood why we never got an FTL 2. The game was certainly popular enough.
54:50 it's almost certainly a reference too the SR-71 Blackbird, an American spy plane.
I find it strange that the Engi have a nonaggression pact with the Rebels and yet the Rebels are invading the Engi territories?
The Rebels are the scummiest scums after all
They likely were only willing to respect it while they were in acting combat against the federation, once they felt that their victory was guaranted they dropped the charade and invaded
The Rebels are literally the Confederacy kek
hard to blame the rebels for being racists when half the races in the galaxy actually are violent or conniving
34:39 it's Vrachos 4 (IV), not 5 (V)
just throwing that out there because I didn't see anyone else mention it

"Hidden Gem" is wild
I think it was proven that female mantis don’t actually make a habit of eating their mates unless they are anxious for food and don’t know where their next meal will come
