  • Pens Plus puts a bright, durable finish on projects the will be exposed to incidental water contact; peppermills, bottle stoppers, pizza cutter handles.

Good to see you back Doctor, hope to see more turning videos from you.

Looks great. I’m a bit confused about pens plus though. What is the benefit of using pens plus over the high build friction polish, vs just using layers of the high build friction polish and topping with your microcrystalline wax?

High Build Friction Polish is a very good finish in its own right but it is also an excellent sanding sealer. It acts t level the surface and give the Pens Plus a better surface to bint o and produces a better shine and a tougher finish. A top coat of paste wax would produce a similar finish but I have found that Pens Plus is more durable than HBFP. I have customers that disagree. One is a penmaker in Houston that uses HBFP for all his pens and says it lasts a very long time. Two woodturners-three opinions on anything.

@@TheDoctorswoodshop sounds like you can get good results either way. I suppose if one wanted extra durability, they could use an oil varnish blend (not to mention CA). I would prefer whatever looks the best. I expect sticking with shellac/walnut oil/microcrystalline wax would probably look nicer.

What brand is the yellow lathe. I haven't seen one like it. Looks great.

I honestly don't know. It belongs to a buddy. It's an old Australian lathe that was revamped with new digital controls and a fresh coat of paint. It's a bloody tank and is the smoothest lathe I have ever used.

Been using PP for years and high build (love both) - can either be used with CA?

HBFP can but the wax in Pens Plus gets in the way of CA.

What rpm are you running the lathe?

For turning, sanding and friction polishing about 1800 to 2000 rpm.
