- Hey, guys! I have had a lot of requests for a video of my journey and why I chose optometry. This video covers why I became an optometrist, my pre-med college experience and getting into optometry school. Basically how I became an optometrist and started my optometry career.
This video was cut down quite a bit for time but I could easily go into more details of my experience in optometry school as well as my optometry residency if you have any questions. Please drop any questions in the comments and if there is enough demand for it perhaps I will do a dedicated video going over my residency experience.

Never a dull moment. I made it to the end of the video! Apparently you're amazing at what you're doing, Doctor Allen.
It's great US have strict law about contacts can only being prescribed by the licensed eye doctors.
I had the unpleasant experience getting my 1st contacts back in year 2002. The optician never properly examined my eyes and I ended up gotten the contacts with the wrong base curve. They never sit still on my corneas and moved around my schleras whenever I blinked . It was really uncomfortable and my schleras were visibly full of blood vessels just after 1 hour of having them on.
I'm not sure whether the optician who fitted me the contact lenses at that time were licensed or not.
Here in Malaysia, we can easily get any contacts, clear or colored, from all sunglasses shops and beauty shops at any malls. They never really insisted and checked on the valid prescription or do the eye examination. We just simply tell them what contact lenses "power" that we want.
I have a question. For the past 5 years, my left or right eye will become teary whenever I lay down on my left side or right side respectively. One eye at the bottom position at the time. I don't feel any discomfort in my eyes at all.
I also noticed whenever I wear any of my glasses, my vision is sharper everytime I stared to the left or right, but it looks slightly blurry when I look straight to the front. My eye prescription is up-to-date. According to the optician, the focus points on my glasses has been done accurately. It doesn't happen when I have my contacts on. I'm a near sighted. The optician who prescribed me the glasses can't even provided me with the explanation. He just simply stated I am the first one ever who came up to him and told that.
What could be the cause for my two conditions? I'm in my early 40 btw.
Oh my goodness! Why wouldn’t we watch your channel? As a person that had to wear thick glasses all of my childhood, it’s great to know that in this day & age, that it can be fixed if we so want. I personally had to have cataract surgery in one eye and the doctor suggested that I should do it in the other eye as well, because the transformation would be phenomenal. I listened to his advice and I’m so glad I did because I never knew what I was missing out as far as color perception as well as clarity of vision.

Optometrists are by far some of best doctors I’ve ever met. I don’t know what it is but they’re always the most relaxed & friendliest. The only doctors visit I never stress over lol
That is so fun to hear as I know a lot of people who stress the most when they go for their eye exams! Probably not from the doctor but because they are worried about the "better 1 or 2 test"

Hey there! This was a fantastic insight into your career journey. Thank you for sharing. I'm a week away from sitting my Final Qualifying Exams to become a Dispensing Optician. I've been working full time in a Private Optometry Practice and doing this course over 3 years distance learning between Ireland and the UK. Its been a struggle with time and energy in honesty but I find it very rewarding. After finding your chanel, I am considering doing a conversion course to Optometry in the coming years. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this chanel, its incredible to hear you have been running it yourself. I honestly thought there was a team already behind the content. What a fabulous story and journey you have been on so far. I live in a very remote part of Scotland where eye specialists are very thin on the ground and all I can say is I wish I had an optometrist like you! My personal experience has been ropey thus far and I have gained so much by watching your videos. I go into my eye exams more educated and better able to ask questions and not just go along with everything I am told. You help me very much. So thank you 🙏

Thank you Clark. Glad you got something out of my story. School was tough, especially before I figured out how I personally learn the best. (for me lecture is OK but reading the textbook is how I retain the information) But never feel discouraged if you struggle with a subject, its all about putting in the time and finding the help you need. I just want thank you for starting and continuing this channel. Shortly after completing undergrad, I started working as a tech at a local optometry office to see if I wanted to pursue optometry and BOY did I have a lot of questions. I didn't want to bombard my doctor with my myriad of silly questions, so your videos have been invaluable resources in my early and current education. Also, as a film and science student, I know how difficult and time consuming it is to research, produce, edit, and publish videos all by yourself, so I want to sincerely thank you and commend you for all the care and dedication you put into every single video. I'm excited to say I'll be starting optometry school this summer and I definitely would not have been able to do it without your guidance through this once foreign world of optometry.
I love watching and learning from your videos! So much so that when I see patients who ask me questions, I almost always answer their questions before the ophthalmologist. While I'm just an Ophthalmic Technician, I feel like a pseudo-medical doctor when patients trust me with these questions and totally understand my responses.

Please do, I am struggling to find information on MGD and eyelash issues and there doesn't seem to be any specialists- dermatologists, othamolgists in Portland that want to actually help. Dr. Alan has helped keep me sane and empower me to learn as much as I can.

Really appreciate the content! Can definitely relate to much of you initial eye health journey of 🤓 to contacts in high school. Really sort of opened up the world a bit, in so many ways. Like especially in to not losing my glasses in PE. My glasses were like a magnet for any projectile from t-ball to soccer through most all of grade/middle school. Sure the nerdy kid sports pics are kind of funny/cute now, but I think contacts really did wonders in saving my face. Lol

Yeah! San Antonio “shines” in the Dr.’s eyes! I have known for about a year that you came down to San Antonio for your medical training. We will welcome you back anytime!!! I frequently drive by UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry. You probably wouldn’t recognize the Medical Center now w/ all the constant construction, for all the latest & greatest updates. I wish I would have known you back then. 🤓. Thanks for all your information about Sjogren’s & how to treat dry eyes @ home. Plus, the details about cataract surgery & extreme nearsightedness. I was almost a -10 in both eyes, until my cataract surgeries. I am glad that I had my surgeries 2 years ago. I was much younger than a traditional patient. Your videos always remind me a kindergarten student I had years ago, who had severe cataracts & had the surgery during the year she was in my class. Her vision was corrected; however, the surgery was unable to restore her total vision in both eyes. Afterwards she was a much happier & more confident student.

@@DoctorEyeHealth I fall back into old habits and do not do proper self-care when busy. So it's definitely been a challenge I still struggle with. I am farsighted, have slight astigmatism, have blepharitis, and have allergies all year round. I get allergy shots and take antihistamine. So it's like I treat one problem and it affects the other. My job and school work requires looking at the screen so also lifestyle as well. 😐

Thanks for sharing Dr. Allen. I do have a great eye doctor but wish you were my doctor, I appreciate people who are so passionate about their work. Also, I just feel you wouldn't treat me like an idiot if I was interested in knowing more about my eyes, I have glaucoma under control but I had to do a lot of research on my own to understand what was happening. Most doctors treat their patients like idiots, always have the "them and us" mentality, I love it when they say "we call it this or that" instead of "it is called this or that", the "we", right away excludes the patient. You are awesome, I learn so much from you! I love how passionate you are about your work.

Myopia entry age 6 years, say 20/50.
About -1 Diopters.
It is my scientific belief, that you can totally prevent it, at that point.
As a result, I did it myself.
The second opinion, in medicine.
What a profound amount of time and money is spent qualifying yourself as an Optometrist.
You have impressive persistence to do it.

I just finished my first semester of optometry school last week! Oh boy were you right about optometry school being very tough. I commute an hour each way too so that makes it a bit more challenging. Ended with As and Bs so far so I’m happy 😅😅

This is a very interesting "Optometrist discussion".
As an Engineer, I do a technical anslysis, of all eyes as, "control systems".
There is a world of difference between these two, "schools of thought".
I, of course believe that prevention is possible, before I go below 20/50, on my Snellen.
But that is a separate scientific story!
Great Job with the channel I think you are doing a great job with it. Didn't know you were only a few years younger than myself. I find it a bit funny that you, my optometrist and my ophthalmologist all wear glasses... I suspect that it probably helps you with explaining to patients and helping them. I went to get checked by my ophthalmologist today, and he had to reset a computer because the power went out earlier, then I asked him if the power ever went out while he was performing any of the medical procedures that he does. He said that he was once doing a laser procedure for secondary cataract when the lasers were still fairly new in the early 1990's, and they had a high powered fuse or filament (don't remember) and it blew out (maybe due to a power surge), the laser made a big popping sound and started to smoke. The patient asked, "am I blind?" that would be pretty scary, but the patient was told to come back in a few weeks when they would be able to replace the part in the laser. Thanks for making this video and the rest of them, I will go check out your website now.

That’s fascinating. My dad was a math major at university of incarnate word.
I actually found your channel when I started working for an optometrist in 2019 and I was just desperate for any info I could devour that would help me at work. (I had previously been in pet retail for 11 years)
Since then I’m the lead clinic tech at our practice, I lovelovelove retinal stuff and am super passionate about getting patients to do more for themselves. (Like optos and retinal imaging) I’ve been in the room with patients crying because something in their vision has changed drastically and they are scared, and been the go to person for so so many of my patients when they need someone to listen to them. I love what I do, and I may never fully understand how I landed in this place in life.
My patients push me to keep learning and to keep doing better every single day, and I’m completely in. I’m waiting for my CPO test results to come back now, and constantly looking for more ways to keep learning and growing here.

Dr Allen I am 41 years old I had lazy eye surgery at 39. I had severe exotropia in my left eye I also have amblyopia. My opthamologist changed my world absolutely changed my world. I wear a contact in my left eye because my right eye has 20 vision and I switch between my glasses also I wear monthly contacts.

Thanks for sharing your journey, it’s no joke having vision issues. I have the best relationship with my eye doctor (MD) he’s so kind and understanding everyone calls him Dr. Jeff. I’m currently on permanent disability due to vision issues. Thank goodness for voice to text! I found your channel and have been watching (lol) listening for a few months, it’s been helpful to hear another person’s view.

It is really interesting to see the similarities between optom school in the US and Australia, some differences is you basically have a bachelor in vision science then go on to do a masters in optometry. It takes 5 years, and residency is compulsory. You pretty much dedicate 5 years of your life to optometry. The one thing I can say is this shit is hard man!!!! I have another year to go and I am just hoping to get through it. Thanks for the videos! keep them up
So true! It is hard! A lot of things to juggle (math, psychology, communication, biology, chemistry...plus having the technical skills to complete and exam) it is a very challenging profession.
In Nigeria its 6 years in university, no pre med or anything. Straight 6 years of optometry school after high school, then 1 year internship and all. It's the same Doctor of optometry (O.D) degree though.

1 year compulsory Internship
1 year compulsory NYSC
Altogether, we study Optometry for 10 freaking year

I’m an optician. The way I got into it was kind of funny. I went to American Career College for Dental Assistant. I was doing the tour of the school when I saw the department of Optics cutting lenses for the glasses that triggered my mind and said I want to go to that department. Currently I was wearing glasses and I wanted to know more about it. Now I have been a licensed Optician for 21yrs. I love it.
That is so cool! My mother was a dental assistant when I was a little child before she went to work at the library.

Oh wow that is an interesting question!!!! I think a lot of that would depend on the clinic you work at and the responsibilities you take on. I will see if I can poll the other docs at the clinic and turn my answers into a community post. So keep a look out for it. Thanks again for the question!

I was wondering where do you feel the future of optometry and optometrists will go from here? What changes do you wish to see?
Hey thanks Stephen! I see optometry (at least in the US) continuing to become more and more medically focused. It already has been for a long time, but it seems more medical management and responsibility is falling on optometrists and hence requires a higher level of competency. I do see glasses becoming less of a focus in the profession. However, I also personally see a distinct possibility that eye clinics in the US may fully drop all vision insurance plans, as they make running a profitable optical so difficult. That, or vision insurances will have to start paying more fairly for professional services, i personally enjoy the medical aspects of optometry more than the optical side, I also see many more states increasing prescribing rights as optometry schools increase their training with lasers and surgical procedures. Pretty loaded topic, but may be an interesting video too. What are your thoughts?
@@DoctorEyeHealth I think that could be a unique video topic in the future to help further show another side to optometry than the optical (ie, glasses side). I know your videos definitely already helped people see there's more to optometry than just the optical side. I know of a friend who's a retail pharmacist and some of the things you highlighted such as the future being more clinically focused and prescribing authority expanding seems also applicable to what pharmacists are going thru and moving more beyond from just the filling and dispensing of medications common in the retail pharmacy setting.
