At age 63 I still have 20/20 vision even though I have lived and played in some very harsh environments. From the snows of Alaska and Canada, to the ocean, to the desert southwest. Also, for the past 35 years I have lived at 7000 ft. and routinely am above 10,000 ft. I have always credited my continuing good eyesight to the fact that I have worn good, high end sunglasses all my adult life.
Money and genetics also play a part. Almost my entire family tree wears glasses. Also, no glasses in the world will save you if you do not avoid diabetes (this is more of a general advice, because of what I have seen in life up to this point). May you always have 20/20 vision, it is underrated.
@@javviii basically any brand will do, you just need to make sure the frames fit ok and the lenses are UV-protected either by the material itself or by protective coatings. Also, good quality lenses should block the reflected UV light on the inner side of the lens. Mountaineer's type of glasses tend to have "blinders" on the sides of frames or the frames designed in a particular way in order to block the side light, that's also important. For some harsher light conditions like mountains or hills you may need cat 4 lens tint (however those are usually too dark for driving though). Trivex and polycarbonate and indexes from 1.6 block UV innately. However, Trivex is considered better optical quality, however, if you don't need prescription glasses all types of lens material will be ok.
My eyes are pretty sensitive to light. I always have tinted windows and wore cheap sunglasses before all the time. 6 months ago I got some prescription sunglasses. They are polarized with all the coatings. AR, Blue blocking, anti scratch , everything they offered. When I put them on for the first time I almost started crying because the world looked to beautiful. I just felt like that was how life was meant to be seen. My eyes felt relaxed for the first time I could remember

Hi there, I wear sunglasses pretty much all the time when I’m outdoors, even during the winter or in cloudy days. I was diagnosed with RP at age 12, and the eye doctor recommended getting specialized sunglasses. He said that it would help block the blue and ultraviolet light from causing more damage to my retina. I enjoy your informative videos. Keep up the good work.
I initially began to wear sunglasses because UV causes premature aging to the skin along with all the other things that UV does to skin. But now knowing the effects it has on the eye itself, I found this pretty informative and encouraging to keep wearing them.

I noticed that during the summer when I wore them my pupils were not as adaptive to varying levels of light, and this would cause headaches at times. Ditching the sunglasses took care of the problem.

I've just always worn sunglasses constantly because I love them so much. I love the way they look, the way I look wearing them. Some people wonder if everything looks too dark to me, but I see everything just fine (and I'm wearing them right now indoors, watching this on my phone four hours after the sun has set, I live in New Hampshire so the sun sets really early this time of year).

Yep! I can’t stop wearing my prescription ray bans! Think I spent a good amount of money on them since my prescription is so dang high. None the less I love them.

Great information in this video. I never wore sunglasses because I never understood the benefits. I found out last week that I have a cataract. The eye doc told me to start wearing sunglasses. I bought a cheap pair, but will check out the Christopher Cloos glasses. Thanks, Dr. Allen.

I wear my prescription sunnies 90% of the time. Polarized lenses are the BIZ. Another thing to note is that they stop you from squinting due to harsh daylight / bright lights indoors = faster development of wrinkles around the eye = faster aging. And then umtimately you get to walk around looking cool AF ;D
Wear them outside all the time, rain or shine. I’ve even wore them in the house, (I have a ton of windows). The sun kinda hurts my eyes, the older I get. The website for the glasses is a bit on the high side for my wallet, but....nice
I wonder if inflammation from dry eye may play a role in the sunlight sensitivity? And totally understandable about the price. But they are good quality and the brand has good values as a company. Good to hear from you Joan!
If the light indoors bothers you, other than seeing a doctor, you should see about getting window UV clings. I have them for my car and my home windows. They reduce glare and help prevent photodamge to you and your furniture/valuables.
Yep, the main reason I wear sunglasses is to prevent headaches...If I don't wear them, I get really bad one, almost migraines. Thank you for the info. I wasn't aware about the UV burning the eyes.
Thank you kindly for sharing this video. Favorite was about cataracts. I now know the sun can play a part in them. I were prescription glasses that have tint in them all the time. No transitional but all the time dark because of migraines that now I don't get anymore. When I go outside I put a pair of sunglasses over the top of my prescription glasses. It helps me a lot. I'm fair skinned and have a freckle in my eye. Maybe wearing shades keeps it from popping stronger like the ones on my arms do if exposed to the sun. Hope you have a wonderful week. 🌷🌷
Hey thanks for sharing Linda! Yes, there is some evidence that exposure to some forms of high energy light can increase the risk of eye freckle growth.
I wear both sunglasses and ski goggles when XC skiing. I have even been so disgusted with bright headlights that I have put on my sunglasses while driving at night. (when the glare gets too much). But I just got cataract surgery and things are now much sharper. It does not appear that my eyes are any more light sensitive than before the surgery, so it was a success. I am hoping night driving becomes easier with less glare from cataracts.

You should make a video on BAK allergies because the past 2 times I’ve gone to the eye doctor, I’ve soaked my contacts in a standard eye wash with that preservative and then 20 minutes after putting my contacts in, my eyes turn bright red and sting/burn like crazy for a few hours and I’ve had to go to the ER both times. Also I see rainbows and halos each time it happens as well. My ophthalmologist doesn’t know for sure what keeps happening, the only guess is a BAK allergy.
If u like a design of a sunglasses. And u need glasses. Could the eye doctors glasses lens makers. Use a the shades frame but removing the lens to transition tested glasses. If u understanding what I am saying. I love wearing the iron/spiderman shades frame on my face. But I need tested glasses. Instead of buying a whole new frame. Can I use the sun glasses Edith glasses frame into transition normal glasses lens and not bad no darkers sun glasses.
I've read that the human retina is sensitive to UV light, but the UV light is filtered by the lens before it reaches the retina (and some people with a missing lens can see UV light). I'm guessing the fact that the lens effectively absorbs UV light in that way is what you mean when you say that UV light "cooks" the lens? It sounds like it is absorbing the energy of UV light.
I borrowed a small Sunglasses from My Brother and I wear it when i Watch youtube and stream games on my PS and just 3 to 5 hours straight of wearing it LESSENS my Ete Strain like 70 Percent less. When i remove my sunglasses after 4 hours,I feel like i had a Eyesight Super Powers.😎.Thank you for this video.yesterday is which n i start wearingbsunglasses while in front of a TV Screen and I am loving the result already😊TY Doc,for this Video.🙌
Bought a pair of cheap $10 glasses from Walmart about a year ago and am finally getting around to looking for better ones! Any budget-friendly polarized 100% UV protection sunglasses brands you recommend? Love your channel! So glad I found it through your colored contacts videos!
Polarized lenses can totally block the image on digital displays. I'm told pilots are not allowed to wear them because of this. They also can block, or cause color shifting, in simple car displays, and make passing vehicles actively shift glass colors on the road. Not a panacea, unless you are fishing.
I have been wearing sunglasses most of my life.. my first reason was to stop migraines.. if I go out without sunglasses I will build up into migraine... second I only wear shield sunglasses that wrap around my eyes... no light coming into sides... which acts as a strobe and triggers migraines... Sunglasses have saved me in my life and yes they look cool too. 😎
What about the benefits of getting sunlight in the morning to prevent seasonal affective disorder and sleep problems? It is good to get SOME sun exposure?
I wear sunglasses whenever I'm outside even when it's cloudy or winter because my eyes are so sensitive to any light. I keep my room dark during the day to and at night I turn on a shower light to see. I wear cheap aviators because they're all I can afford but they do good. I also require prescription glasses because of astigmatism and I also wear aviator style with those to. This video just made me want to wear sunglasses even more to be honest because I don't want cataracts in my eyes especially after my Gma had them and could barely see and the eye surgeon messed up one of her eyes. Sunglasses squad is here
How important is it that they are shades (as opposed to colorless)? I live at a very high latitude with grey, dark winters. Plus, I'm an artist. I hate to lose light or colors when it's anything short of a blindingly bright, summertime day.
Great information, thank you! I always make an effort to wear sunglasses when I’m outside not only for UV protection but for eye protection in general. I’ve really developed a dislike for polarization on my lenses, however, due to interfering with reading electronic displays. I know there are some recent advances in polarization but in my own experience I think standard non polarized (but high quality) sunglass lenses work the best for me.
Hi doctor hope you are well! I’m medical glasses has uv light protection does that mean it works like normal sunglasses? Or do I wear sunglasses when I’m out instead of my medical once, thanks.
I am blind in one eye. I have a gray blob in the center of my good eye. My eye doctors can't figure out why. They say they see nothing wrong with my good eye that could cause this. Any thoughts? It's not an injury or burst blood vessel. My eye doctor cannot find any medical cause for the grey blob in the center of my vision.
I always wear my sunglasses outside. The main benefit I notice is the huge reduction in eye strain in the bright light. I even notice a reduction in overcast days as well.
This video was great, but what does it mean if you buy a good branded pair of sunglasses with glass lenses, also 100% UV protected and polarised but they make your eyes hurt and sometimes cause headaches. But you’re fine when not wearing them?
I wear them even during grey days because there’s a slight glare. Blue eyes red head so maybe a tad more sensitive. Only trouble is, I’m finding it harder to take the sunglasses off. Where’s the balance?
Having dry macular degeneration and wearing prescription glasses, what do I ask for when shopping for sunglasses as far as UV protection ? Also, is there a certain frame style or color lenses that would work best? Thank you.
Not only to protect, but a very obvious 'show stopper' that people will ALWAYS notice when you are walking outside/indoors/etc. Eyes are so precious and we only got a pair. I have a slight damage i guess on my left eye but that was from playing basketball before when someone's finger touched my eye on accident. depending on one's budget and if they like fancy things, you can spend literally thousands if you like to collect more than a pair of sunglasses lol.. the price and brand of a sunglass does matter since the quality/clarity are not as good vs high end shades that cost a couple hundred or more.
Do you really need the dark tint, though? I'd like to wear sunglasses for protection, but without a noticeable reduction in light and ones that I can wear if I'm out on my motorcycle and it gets dark. One of the main reasons I'm looking for sunglasses is because I drive east in the morning and the sun is directly in my eyes when I'm driving. Not only does it significantly increase the risk of an accident, but I have to look almost directly into the sun to see things like stop signs and stop lights. I worry what this is doing to my vision. Where I live it almost NEVER gets cloudy (despite how cold it is).
I have Keratoconus, have you heard of studies that say a certain amount of morning sun is not only healthy for the eyes but can delay progression of certain eye disease? I’m wondering what’s most ideal here. Maybe go without sunglasses for first hour or so, then wear sunglasses the rest the day.
I have a rare retinal vascular disease and glaucoma in my early 20's. For a lot of last year I stayed inside and avoided the outdoors. When I did go outdoors, I had tremendous light sensitivity and could hardly see outdooors without sunglasses. I gradually increased my exposure to natural light and I now see much better in bright sunlight. Weren't our bodies designed to be exposed to natural light?
Great videos!! BTW, if you could do any material about Oscillopsia that would be fantastic! Its so hard to find ANY info about that the biggest struggle in my life.... :(
What was your favorite part of this video? Why do you wear sunglasses?
I bought sunglasses so I could cycle without the sun irritating my eyes. Also for going on long walks on sunny days when it's just too bright outside. I have prescription sunglasses (my precious) and non-prescription both with UV filters.

Hey thanks for following up! Glad to hear things went ok!
Many contacts have uv protection too. But you still need sunglasses since the contacts only protect the lens
💯 absolutely!
Great info! I always wear sunglasses outdoors even on over cast days!!
Awesome!
Ok, that video got me subscribed :D
Thanks for subbing Galin!!!
Great video, I will start wearing sunglasses because eyes are my 2nd favorite organ!
I always wear them, and now I feel justified ! Thank You. Love these videos.
Some safety glasses have clear lenses that promise 99% filtering of rays. For people using construction tools outdoors. Wonder if they work?
I started wearing sunglasses because of facial skin cancer. I love my maui jims
Revo Photochromic Polarized sunglasses is my #1 choice for day and night driving and outdoors!"
REVO is bomb! Gotta review those some time.
7:07 great way to show what polarised lenses do!
What do you think about people just using clear UV400 prescription glasses for regular day-to-day?
I borrowed a small Sunglasses from My Brother and I wear it when i Watch youtube and stream games on my PS and just 3 to 5 hours straight of wearing it LESSENS my Ete Strain like 70 Percent less. When i remove my sunglasses after 4 hours,I feel like i had a Eyesight Super Powers.😎.Thank you for this video.yesterday is which n i start wearingbsunglasses while in front of a TV Screen and I am loving the result already😊TY Doc,for this Video.🙌
I just found out that the UV protection wears off with time, apparently. I've been using the same pair for years.
This makes sense and I never thought about it 🙃
Awesome information for safety of our eyes
Keep growing sir!
0:33 "Why I am always wearing sunglasses" **Isn't wearing sunglasses**
Bought a pair of cheap $10 glasses from Walmart about a year ago and am finally getting around to looking for better ones! Any budget-friendly polarized 100% UV protection sunglasses brands you recommend? Love your channel! So glad I found it through your colored contacts videos!
It definitely help you with photo-aging around the eyes. I always wear sunglasses even when its overcast.
Polarized lenses can totally block the image on digital displays. I'm told pilots are not allowed to wear them because of this. They also can block, or cause color shifting, in simple car displays, and make passing vehicles actively shift glass colors on the road.
Not a panacea, unless you are fishing.
You are right about the displays!
I’ve lost it countless times & am losing it again. Honestly, my blind phases meant happier better everything.
Thank you Dr. Allen! Me too, I ALWAYS wear sunglasses, they look great too. I LOVE your cool eye model, where can I get one please?
I imagine you may find them on Amazon otherwise there are optical or medical supplies stores and websites
Otherwise I got min as a gift when I graduated optometry school
I have been wearing sunglasses most of my life.. my first reason was to stop migraines.. if I go out without sunglasses I will build up into migraine... second I only wear shield sunglasses that wrap around my eyes... no light coming into sides... which acts as a strobe and triggers migraines... Sunglasses have saved me in my life and yes they look cool too. 😎
Dr. Allen, you should do a glasses collection video. By the way, great video!
What about the benefits of getting sunlight in the morning to prevent seasonal affective disorder and sleep problems? It is good to get SOME sun exposure?
Good point! I should do a video about lifestyle and benefits of sunlight.
Sunglasses squad is here
"You know who wears sunglasses indoors? Blind people and assholes. " (Larry David - Curb your Enthusiasm, HBO)
I don’t get headaches, but often in stores and shopping centers My eyes seam to feel better whenI keep my sunglasses on. Unusual or not?
Me too! Those lights always makes me squint my eyes.
Perhaps due to the fluorescent lighting? 🤷
It's a must living in South Texas for sun protection. Just ordered some SunGod Velans, can't wait to receive them!
How important is it that they are shades (as opposed to colorless)? I live at a very high latitude with grey, dark winters. Plus, I'm an artist. I hate to lose light or colors when it's anything short of a blindingly bright, summertime day.
Can you do a video on how to repair scratched lenses and scratched coatings?
Great information, thank you! I always make an effort to wear sunglasses when I’m outside not only for UV protection but for eye protection in general. I’ve really developed a dislike for polarization on my lenses, however, due to interfering with reading electronic displays. I know there are some recent advances in polarization but in my own experience I think standard non polarized (but high quality) sunglass lenses work the best for me.
You are right! The polarized filters on electronics does get a little annoying.
Dont understand your all...informations so I am désappointed for that ...eyes are so important ! Tell you congratulations young doctor😀...from fwi
Great video and wonderful information about wearing sunglasses 😎 👍
I will give these glasses a look. Nice to have an option other than Luxottica, (Italian company that almost controls 100% of the market).
Closer to 80% but yes, in their defense they do make some decent products but yes, I enjoy unique brands myself.
You always are on point! Great videos... thanks
Having dry macular degeneration and wearing prescription glasses, what do I ask for when shopping for sunglasses as far as UV protection
Please keep up the great videos !, can you do a video on lasik surgery and if its a good option or not to do it ?.
😎😎😎 NOOOO
Thank you. Very helpful.
Anytime! Thanks for watching Michael!
Great videos!! BTW, if you could do any material about Oscillopsia that would be fantastic! Its so hard to find ANY info about that the biggest struggle in my life.... :(
You look so cool in those sunglasses!
Haha thank you!
My eyeglasses prescription lens have uv protection (at least the optometrist told me so) is it necessary to buy a sun clip-on to protect my eyes?
Question- what are your thoughts on sunglasses preventing the body from producing urocanic acid (the body's natural production of sunscreen)?
4:13 how did you interview nightcrawler?
You can get UV protection in prescription glasses too right?
contacts too
100% yes! Either through the lens material or clear coatings put on the lenses!
hi like your videos just wona ask do we need prescription for sunglasses ?
Do transition lenses provide the same amount of protection as prescription sunglasses would?
My kingdom for cycling sunglasses that don't fog up!
is it better to wear non uv protection sunglasses or clear glasses with uv protection?
Hi Dr Allen, I have recently been diagnosed with Pigmentary Glaucoma and wonder if you have any videos on this subject. Or advice what to do...?
Grateful for your channel. Is polarized glasses 100% UV protection? What is the best of the world? 100% UV protection glasses or polarized glasses?
Hey thank you! From what I understand, the polarized filter may not guarantee UV light protection.
What kind of sunglasses we should buy any suggestions... Should we buy polarized plz tell me
