  • Hey everyone! In today's video, I’m excited to share an update on my journey as an optometrist and content creator. It’s been a busy few months, and I want to take you along for the ride as I balance my professional and personal life.
From volunteering with the American Optometric Association to hosting my podcast, "Eye Give a Damn," and creating educational videos for doctors on EyeTube.net, there’s never a dull moment. I’m also committed to my TH-cam channel, where I strive to bring you valuable content while still seeing patients in the clinic.
In this video, I’ll be honest about the challenges I face, including work-life balance, mental health struggles, self-criticism, and perfectionism. It’s not always easy, but my passion for public education and creating helpful content keeps me going.
Join me as I open up about my experiences, share behind-the-scenes insights, and discuss the highs and lows of being a creator and optometrist. Your support means the world to me, and I hope my journey can inspire and resonate with you.
Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more updates and eye care tips!

Hey buddy, just wanted to tell you that you played a huge part in me studying optometry. I’m now in my first year of OD in Melbourne, Australia. You’ve had a huge impact on me, and I’m very grateful for that. Please take good care of yourself, even if that means uploading less frequently. We’ll still be here

Don't be so hard on yourself, Dr. Joe. We really appreciate everything you teach us about our precious eyes. I have followed you for a couple of years and have actually put my optometrist onto your channel. Whenever i visit him, we have great discussions on your videos. He told me that he gets so much knowledge, which he passes on to his patients. Stay well and keep helping us all to better eye health....thank you and we love you ..

Thank you for this, and all your videos. Your hard work behind the scenes is evident in how you present information. It is always well organized, researched, and presented in a way that is incredibly helpful. I am working on getting my recently much more significant and painful dry eyes under control and your videos are helping with that. (I have also had a recent eye exam). Thank you so much for your dedication, your continued search for knowledge, and for being so willing to share as much of that as you can with all of us.

Guys I recently met Dr Joe Allen at a conference and I want you all to know that this guy really cares about what kind of info he puts out and has set the bar high for rest of us content creators. When speaking with him I learned that he has persevered through so much in his life and still continued to make the time to share quality content with the rest of us through it all. Leave this video a like and let this guy know how you feel about his work in the comments. We need him to keep putting out content his whole life and we need to let him know about it too.

I am just a random person here of your 1M+ viewers but you have been through a traumatic life change with the divorce and I would guess that work has always been a good distraction and coping mechanism for you as it is something you are good at. I would encourage you to force some non-work time which will be uncomfortable but will reveal where you need to do some work on self-care and emotion stuff. You are a wonderful person and you can have it all. So fun to watch your channel grow and you moving forward. Thanks for the life update.

Dr.Allen, your an amazing Dr. your passion in helping and giving such great care to your patients and all on U Tube is few and far between. I hope your taking time for Self care, doing fun things you enjoy and just for mental health. We sure don’t want you to get burned out. As a nurse/ cardiovascular Sonographer, I soo loved teaching cardiovascular to RN students and training general ultrasound techs in cross training was a huge love of mine. Unfortunately I as a contract Sonographer , had a spinal injury helping a patient in which led to loss of bladder and left leg( I did gain all back after numerous spinal cord surgeries. With that being said, I miss caring and diagnostics in helping patients. Wish all Drs had the Passion you have in caring for their patients. Thank you for being you and I have utmost respect and thankfulness to you, but please, take care of YOU!

Thanks for sharing this…I go through some of the same issues in a different way as a private practice owner. I start thinking man I wish I could just be a content creator instead of running this business but you sharing this really gives me perspective on how hard you work for what you do. You are such a great ambassador for what we do and it’s nice to know how much effort you put into each of your videos. I know how it feels to never completely turn your mind off from work but I’ve slowly put more boundaries in place, physical and mental so that I can do that but it’s not always easy. I started listening primarily because my Mum has dry macular regeneration and suddenly severely worse and stopped driving. I have MS and blurry vision and not always clear what is up! Your genuine presentation is refreshing coupled with your professional expertise and desires to do all you can. As I listened to you hear your humanity first and having been a SW in health care for many years and now retired due to disability your story is a huge challenge. First thank you for your care to others. Know that God rested after creating and tells us how to care for our bodies. Your are created in His image and I invite you to explore our need to become reacquainted or meet for the first time He who offers rest for those who labor and are heavy laden... an offer to come to Him. He gave you your gift that you have to pass on. I think Chris Knobs also shares your passion and may be able to share more with you. Keep up the good work and take care.

Good morning, I just had a delicious coffee and listened to your video. I love hearing about your personal life, and the pressure you’re putting on yourself ,the research time you are putting in to giving us the best information possible.
I should get my husband to watch this. He is a busy oncologist. actively involved in politics a principal investigator for a clinical trial four young adult sons and wife😅😅😅
I noticed when he starts to burn out and I have to encourage him to take some time off. We regularly go camping and just come back to earth, and set some things aside. Because it’s not healthy to keep up this pace.
I don’t want you to burn out, so take time for yourself and prioritize your mental health , and physical of course. Take a hike.❤

I'm a fan of self reflection and retrospectives. A lot of it hit home for me as well with your topics. I appreciate hearing all the other things you do, you are clearly the type of person who loves to give. There's something really special knowing that your knowledge is going beyond your 9 to 5 job and that you are making an impact on others. You had mentioned perfectionism and prioritization in the video; but there's also something you've mastered as well. Saying no. It's not an easy thing to realize as a folks typically say yes to things to help and assist. But when it becomes overwhelming to the point of you taking on the world, you ultimately suffer. We all specialized in areas of saying no to, but it sure as heck hard to master it all around. And as a segue...TH-cam. I hear, understand and appreciate that it's a shipload of work and that you're kind of pinned under metrics, rankings, and all kinds of other things. BUT know that you do with all these videos is already of very high caliber. I absolutely appreciate it and I'm sure many of us are watching your videos even though we don't have any of the conditions you describe. We're all here to hang with you and learn. So thank you for what you've done for the community, I honestly don't remember how I got here, but I'll be waiting patiently for any and all of your future videos. Best wishes to you and keep on keeping on!

Also, you could NEVER look bad in a video! With those curls and those eyes...stop! I can't believe you said that. I almost spit out my coffee. 😂

    Hello Dr. Allen!
I want you to understand that as you share your experiences, I can empathize with the burnout and stress that come with maintaining a demanding and challenging career. In addition to the wealth of valuable information you've already shared, your videos have been incredibly helpful to me during some eye health issues I faced. I have learned so much from you and I have been able to share that knowledge with others who needed it. That knowledge is immeasurable.
However, it's essential to recognize that you're only one person, and you've already gone above and beyond what most people would. You've positively impacted many lives. While it would be fantastic if you continued creating educational content at the pace you already are, please remember that no one will be upset if you prioritize your own well-being and take some time for yourself. 🌟 I'll look forward to your future videos and I hope you take some more time for yourself! It is worth everything to have that time to refresh and take care of your mental care too. Take joy in the education and assistance you’ve already provided, and that you have an amazing position to learn more!
    With heartfelt regards!

Hi there! This vid of yours was a surprise. I wasn't expecting you to produce such a personal vid. I have just gotten used to your "quick" optometric vids and appreciate them a lot - especially how clearly you deliver the content. Your "crisp" diction is quite refreshing and very helpful. I can commiserate w/ your life and how work can dominate it. Although I'm retired now (mid 60s), I used to be quite busy too (though in a different field: computer systems).
Hang in there. You do very good work (if you ever doubted it and just in case you need to hear it). Relax but keep it up! (-the good work that is).👏

You are doing amazing. Remember to take care of yourself. Working so much can easily lead to burnout.
I appreciate this video. You are being open and honest about your life and it helps us to remember you are a human who struggles just like we do. When I was working, I struggled with perfection. It is so difficult to call a project “completed,” when I want to keep tweaking it to be just right.
I appreciate all your research. Bringing well thought out topics helps me personally to know what I can bring up at my next appointment.
Personally, I struggle with dry eye. I had a stroke and on that side, my eye tends to be a little dry, much more so at night. I had a brain tumor. My facial nerve was affected and that eye (other one) no longer produces tears. That eyelid doesn’t close all the way. I was surprised to find that there was very little direction on eye care after my surgery. Many other patients say the same thing. We end up teaching each other about preservative free drops and ways to keep the eyelid closed at night. I was wondering if you could do a video about this, about when the facial nerve affects the eye. (I could probably do my own video with all I’ve learned by now!)

You are not alone with perfectionism; many of us are. I’m learning how to curb that because I’m finding as I get older, it becomes harder to be perfect.
I hope you don’t quit these videos. The one on floaters especially stuck with me; from your enthusiasm about the subject, and the subject matter.

Thank you so much for all of your hard work! If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have known that dry eye treatments existed. My optometrist would just tell me to use artificial tears. There just happens to be a dry eye specialist right in my town! I had 3 IPL and LLLT treatments done so far, and I'm going to get Lipiflow done in a few days. Hopefully, this will make some difference so that I can wear my contacts for more than a few hours! It's so important for patients to be educated these days. Thank you!!

Since I am probably your mother's age, you are bringing out my motherly instincts and I just want to protect you😊. Thank you for sharing the behind the scenes stories of your life. It is a nice change to hear about what is going on in the life of a creator. You are ambitious, and yes, very much a perfectionist, and undoubtedly very intelligent. It is good you are putting your talents to good use. And it is true you are in an ideal time of your life to grab all the information you can. You are not wasting your youth, go for it, but just set a few limits to be sure you are taking care of yourself. I am a person who has had eye issues from childhood and continue to do so to this day. I have been through a lot, but have learned a lot from you and do truly appreciate the value that you offer.
