    Houston and Dallas
    Space City and Big D
    The biggest and third biggest cities in Texas, which is impressive, because everything is bigger in Texas. To say there is a rivalry between the two iconic cities is an understatement.
    They are 240 miles, or 386 km apart. About 3 and a half hour drive. And yeah, both are huge.
    In fact, with around 2.4 million people, Houston is the 4th largest city in the United States. With 1.4 million people, Dallas is the 9th largest. Houston actually is the biggest city in the country by total area. I know, I know. Dallas is part of the 4th largest metro area in the country (7.6 million). I mean, it’s close to Fort Worth and Arlington. Their metro is also known as DFW, or simply The Metroplex. Houston’s metro area is 5th (7 million). And for the rest of this video, I will give you statistics based on their metros areas, unless I state otherwise, mmk?
    First of all, Dallas has a lower population density.
    Ok next, so apparently there are these rankings by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network that look at global cities. While it considers both Dallas and Houston global cities, Houston is ranked Alpha - and Dallas is ranked at Beta +. Have fun with that in the comments.
    Houston is a short drive from the ocean. More specifically, the Gulf of Mexico or even more specifically, Galveston Bay. It’s a Gulf Coast city. Dallas is...uh...a longer drive from the ocean. It’s at the edge of the Great Plains, and you’re not going to see as many palm trees there.
    Due to this, Dallas gets more tornadoes and Houston gets more hurricanes. Dallas is at the southern end of what’s known as Tornado Alley, where tornadoes are more common. Dallas has been directly hit by tornadoes multiple times in its history. Houston has been hit by hurricanes multiple times. Most recently, in 2017 Hurricane Harvey caused parts of Houston to flood. Flooding is actually a regularly occurring problem in Houston, but not in Dallas as they’ve figured out a way to tame the mighty Trinity River, for the most part. Related to this...Houston is sinking. Literally. Dallas is not.

      Why would there be a rivalry in football? The texans and cowboys aren't even in the same conference.I remember when I was a child Houston had no football team. The cowboys just won the super bowl and everyone in Houston was cheering for the cowboys. As soon as the Texans became a team things changed. Even a news reporter from Houston said, "Even if we lose every game, as long as we beat dallas." There is a type of jealousy from houston when it comes to dallas.

      For real tho, nice to have you here, I live in the greater houston area too. I just hope you remember how all your government's attempts to fight injustice and inequality only made it worse. Please remember, the real answer might not be in outlawing independent contractors and building nice apartments to give away for free to the homeless that never get built because of bureaucracy. Sometimes it comes from not seizing crowdfunded miniature homes, and letting the free market work itself out. My family moved from cali in 2001 when i was a baby. I think you'll like it here after a while.

      Houston is has more to do that Dallas and it's close to the water but it's a wreck and the land area is too big. Dallas is centric and everything is more organized. Sure it's smaller but the downtown is actually fun. I wish houston had a district like Austin with 6th st, Memphis with Beale st, or New Orleans with Bourbon st. In Houston everything is spread all over the place. I do like the weather better in dallas but being able to have a water front home is nice. Either city is great in my opinion.

      Fort Worth is for community, Dallas is for business, and Arlington is for entertainment.
      Still since we're in the topic of rivalry (going to be bais):
      1. Fort Worth Zoo had been ranked in the top 10 zoo in the US, while Dallas Zoo had already killed off couple of young animals that barely lived an entire year.
      2. Dallas is currently dealing with corruption in the Mayor team (city councilors), while Fort Worth haven't in the past decades (Democrat vs Republican).
      3. Dallas used to had Little Mexico near it's Downtown, but tear it down to make way for Victory Park and the American Airlines Stadium. Fort Worth never done that, and still had it's historic Hispanic neighborhoods (West Seminary and Northside).
      4. American Airlines (major hub for DFW airport), has it headquarters at the Fort Worth side, and currently their new Headquarters is still located at the Fort Worth (or Tarrant County) side.
      5. Fort Worth is currently making an effort to make their city walkable (Panther City projects), but also has more parks (Trinity Park is near downtown), and a nature preservation (Fort Worth Nature & Refuge). Dallas have Kyle Park, but also Trinity Forest (tho it was menmade). Dallas also have a project that make their city more walkable (Trinity River Corridor Project).
      6. Oh yeah the Stockyards is in Fort Worth, and was part of the Cattle Drive, not Dallas (except the train of course).

      As for DART, I'm not a big fan because it's incredibly slow and not on time very much. Also, the DFW Area is just so extensive that it takes a long time to get everywhere on DART.
      As for the NHL possibly coming to Houston. They is a growing effort to get a NHL Team in Houston right now that could be a reality soon (possibly if a team like the Arizona Coyotes, Florida Panthers or Ottawa Senators were to move in the not to distant future).

    I grew up in Arlington and moved to Houston when I was 20. I never thought there was a rivalry. Dallas is more Formal where Houston is more casual because of the heat I guess. The humidity took a good year to get used to. Houston has to season’s Summer and August couple weeks of winter just not together.

    • @CoolDude-uh3ke
      @CoolDude-uh3ke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you like the cheesy strip club type of neon lights on buildings then you must like Dallaa skyline. Houston skyline is much better: it has taller buildings, and it is much more spread out with more buildings. Plus Houston downtown has an air-conditioned underground tunnel system with restaurants/shops and connecting most buildings, it has a great performing arts district, it has vibrant and beautiful parks, it has baseball, basketball, and soccer stadiums, and more. Dallas downtown is at best average.

    • @CoolDude-uh3ke
      @CoolDude-uh3ke 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @local bruhman LOL you wish. I have been to Dallas many times, its downtown is average, much worse than Houston. It is no wonder they call Dallas as dull-ass. Houston museum and performing arts districts are the largest in Texas. I think the rivalry was mostly a late seventies through eighties thing. We hated the "America's Team" rhetoric and the Cheerleaders. And we hated that "Dallas" was a primetime hit. There was for a year a daytime soap called "Texas" set in Sugar Land and Houston. It flopped. There was a crime drama called Houston Knights that aired only a few episodes and was publicly denounced by the mayor, the chief of police, and the county DA.
      At this point the rivalry is over. Houston now pretends it is some kind of medieval Free City with special access to the governments in Austin and Washington DC.

Out on Bolivar you can see the remains of a late 19th century coastal fort and a new coastal fort, the Crenshaw K-8 school. Crenshaw is an absolute fortress, a hurricane-proof behemoth for the children of Bolivar. High School kids have to commute to Galveston on the ferry.

    My Houston family wouldn’t like me saying this but I actually love both cities. It is true that the rivalry is felt more in Houston than Dallas, which probably stems from feeling overlooked in favor of Dallas on a national scale much of the time, despite being the bigger city. But, also the vibe in Dallas is kind of snooty and they won’t hesitate to remind you that they don’t think of Houston very often. This also is part of what fans Houstonian rage, a bit.
    Having grown up there, I don’t mind the humidity, but my wife didn’t love it during our time there.

    As a Houstonian it’s relatively convenient, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin. I prefer going to Austin or San Antonio over Dallas because I just don’t have much of a reason to visit Dallas. San Antonio has the The River Walk ,Alamo, Fiesta, TX and Sea World and it’s close to New Braunfels which has Schlirterbahn. And Galveston is 45 minutes away. Meanwhile Austin had Sixth Street and a lot of unique food choices available on food trucks and a unique vibe. Dallas kinda comes off as a smaller Houston without much variety to make me need to go there I can’t already get in Houston.

      Austin has just 6th street. Houstom just has Bars and clubs. And San Antonio has the riverwalk.
