This video brought Sega’s history to life in such a powerful way! I remember the Genesis glory days like they were yesterday. It’s so fascinating to see how Sega’s bold innovations shaped the gaming industry. You captured both the thrill and tragedy perfectly. Please do more of these deep dives into gaming history - this was amazing!
The biggest problem SEGA had to endure during the 90s was the different mentality set between SEGA of America and SEGA of Japan. Both were the same company, yeah... but their decisions, were not. And led to clash of ideas in marketing and how to bring the whole giant they once were. Fortunaltely, and even tho they don't produce consoles anymore, they did manage to create some of the best franchises up to date.
Having owned both a Playstation and a Saturn I won't say the Playstation was light years ahead at all. In all honesty, there was not that much difference. I think the real reason is that Sony could undercut Sega on the Price and that Sony had a far bigger Budget for Commercials.
@timothymcnaughton531 Yeah, that is true. I remember Sony doing deals with a lot of Developers to stop them releasing games on Saturn or N64. The Final Fantasy deal with Square was probably the most well know. When people talk about the PS1 vs Saturn vs N64 era, They seem to forget that Sony had a far Bigger Budget than Sega or Nintendo. Sony could afford to sell the Console at a loss, Afford A ton of Adverts and could cut deals with Devs.
I’m honestly blown away by this! Sega was always a legend in gaming, but I never knew all the behind-the-scenes details you covered. The rise, the risks they took, and the big fall with the Dreamcast hit me harder than I expected. Thanks for shedding light on this - it makes me want to revisit those games again. Please, keep these deep dives coming!
This was a trip down memory lane! Sega was so ahead of its time, and I think this video really showed how much heart they put into each console. It’s crazy to think of all the risks they took! I’d love to see you do more stories on gaming companies - maybe Nintendo or Sony next? Keep up the amazing work!
Sega was a lesson in how badly you could run a company, bad debt, confusing mish-mash of systems and piss poor marketing, they had the tech but they wasted almost every opportunity they had, while the big N had a clear idea what they wanted, planned things mostly right and reaped the rewards.
I'm confused today about the Sega additional hardware and i have access to the Internet to find out ! Imagine it's 1994 and it's very difficult to find these information . People were confused , waiting for another console . Had Sega went directly with Saturn it woud have been better . And it's true, Saturn was a complicated machine, very hard to emulate even today . People wanted arcade quality games at home, all they had to do was port this experience .
PlayStation 3D graphics were not 'light years ahead of Sega.." they were pretty comparable, with PlayStation have the edge due to using Triangles and Saturn using quads plus the PlayStation was more friendly toward developers, better kits and tools, was worldwide opened, Sega was in that phase of having internal conflicts ( Japan vs US offices crashing heads..) Plus the fever at the time was EVERYTHIGN needed to be 3D, some game franchises suffered a lot for it, and we lost good game designs for a time because this trend took over.. and we got a lot of ugly 3D poly games which we barely can look at today..
I don’t know. I think the PlayStation’s 3D graphics were quite a bit better than what the Saturn was capable of. If you look at Tomb Raider and compare the Saturn to PlayStation version it’s pretty obvious how much better the PlayStation graphics are. Resident Evil only looks slightly better on the PlayStation than the Saturn. The Saturn could not pull off transparency effects and like you said the quadrilateral polygons were a troubling factor in development for 3D Saturn titles. Supposedly 3D graphics were implemented at the last minute of Saturn planning only because Sega found out about how great the Sony PlayStation would be able to process 3D graphics. Capcom tried to port Resident Evil 2 to the Saturn, but was unable to since the Saturn couldn’t handle the 3D graphics from what I’ve read. The Saturn’s main strengths were in 2D graphics where it really shined. I only had a PlayStation and Nintendo 64 at the time and I was jealous of how Saturn owners could get the best arcade ports of Capcom’s 2D titles like X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter if they chose to import it from Japan. The Saturn had some awesome 2D titles as well as Virtua Fighter 2, but the PlayStation was just too great for gamers to ignore. Sony was poaching top talent away from Sega which probably only hurt the Saturn even worse.
@@gedaman The Saturn was more than capable at running 3D graphics. The problem with the Saturn was that if had too much silicon under the hood. Sony could easily manufacture a less expensive machine, while Sega couldn't. The same happened for Microsoft's Xbox. Sony could out-price MS, because of their ability to engineer a cheaper product.
@@gedaman The PS was a bit better on 3D graphics that s true, but not by much, but people tend to compare games that came YEARS after the PS was out, while the Saturn had a very "short" run, Sega kind of gave up early on the game and tried to rush the Dreamcast... The Saturn was more of a sprite pusher than a 3D focused engine, sprites looked awesome on Saturn, while PS had to swap a lot of things to make them work 'fine', all those 2D fighting games on PS were a headache for developers...but the opposite was true for 3D games.
I was a SEGA kid from 1987 obscurity through the Genesis/Sega CD years, Sonic rise to dominance (60% marketshare) to the confusing 32X and lack of good games. SoJ's confusing, changing roadmap brought them down. The company should've taken the 50/50 deal with SONY, at least outside of Japan. However, the real problem was that they'd repeatedly pulled the rug out from under enthusiasts, game devs, and retailers, and casual gamers. While SONY was being the best platform for devs, SEGA was putting their third parties out of business.
Unfortunately I can't see Sega releasing a new console any time soon. Even Xbox is falling behind recently. Nintendo and Sony Playstation are just too powerful.
Doom on a calculator ti-83 John Carmack:"Come on with your Sega Saturn" 😂 and I almost bought a Dreamcast back then. Thanks dad with your "It's better to wait." Anyway with an emulator today. For the Dreamcast, already good for a long time. For the Sega Saturn, it took more time for a good emulator. It reflects the hardware complexity problems.
By January of 1994, the Kalinske Team was on their way to total market domination in north and south america and in europe. That was the time when Sega of Japan took over and pulled the rug out from underneath everyone. It was known as the year that sega went crazy. The Sega CD÷SVP ($49.95 LockOn cart with a soundship and an extra 128KB RAM) was ready with 6 top arcade hits and already in testing, ready for early march 1994. Instead, capitalizing 42 years on their arcade, dominant with the virtuous series and Daytona USA, the arcade giant abandoned their gaming enthusiasts, retailers, developers, and they're best people at SoA.
SEGA was way ahead, but they really made some bad business decisions, which started with the 32X. SEGA was leading with breathtaking arcade tech, like the SEGA Model 1 and SEGA Model 2, they made the Saturn a complete different system, instead of using the arcade tech, like the Model 1 from 1992 for the home console in 1994. Nevertheless Saturn was awesome and the Dreamcast delivered too.
Saturn was more powerful than the Model 1. The Model 1 could only display flat shaded polygons, while the Saturn could display textured mapped Polygons, as well as displaying a larger amount of Polygons on screen at any one time. At of all the Sega Arcade Boards, the Saturn is closest to the ST-V.
@The_Gaming_Bristolian Look at how Bad Virtual Fighter for the Saturn was vs. the Model 1 Arcade brilliance. Virtua Fighter Remix was awesome, but not Arcade quality, the CD music was of course superior.
Sega of america had built a great roadmap, leading up to January 1994. That was the month we're sega of japan took over and was known as "the year when SEGA went insane"

Actually PS1 graphics were not "light years" ahead of Saturn. If anything the Saturn is a more powerful machine than the ps1
A system's power is nothing if it's hard to program for.

TLDW: Sega basically didnt know what to do with their "success" and how to follow it up.
It would have been a miracle if they had won. Too much debt, and they lacked company cohesion and focus.
