That's because Grimm knows what Wyrm did and knows about the Vessels. Grimm is one of the few characters who actually know what you are, probably due to his closeness to a Higher Being
Thematically, Grimm is a beautiful fight. It's supposed to be a dance, he bows to you before it begins, there's an audience watching, and he even straight up tells you that you're dancing together. idontknowhowtoname I didn’t watch his prequel videos to not get spoiled lol. But I am pretty sure it is a sequel. Not only is it referred to as a sequel, but the game is referred to as a pilgrimage and from what we have seen, Hornet’s personality is the same in the early game areas as the one in the original game. She also has Lifeblood shit in the game and Pale King would have fucking yote the equipment if she used them. And since a Weaver escaped the Weaver’s Den, the game will probably do something about that. And this is just a stupid assumption with no evidence, but maybe the holy citadel at the top of Pharloom is the White Palace? Idk, I never heard his points but it really seems that it is a sequel
I think NKG is a lot like his theme: At first it sounds chaotic and terrifying, but as you spend more time on it, you start to hear the patterns. Then it becomes fun and terrifying.
@Oreo Cookie wait fr? How would he stop it? The Moths remembered Her, and she latched on to dreams of bugs, causing that dank orange infection. Void could consume Her, but how would Wyrm beat her?
Yes, The Nightmare King is extremely difficult. But by god is he also fun as hell to fight. The setting, the music, Grimms affable charm, they all make for a wonderful experience.
He's fun when you fight him to complete the ritual as he's much more thematically appropriate in that setting but in Pantheon of Hallownest, since he's more of an endurance boss fight, I find him more of a chore to fight than most bosses. The same doesn't really apply to Grimm because he's vulnerable much more often in that fight so if you have a more risky, fast-paced playstyle, you won't be slowed down by the boss being invulnerable for a majority of the fight.
@@TheGamesReal you can actually damn near constantly hit NKG without being hit back if you perfectly understand his motions. I'm not capable of it myself but I've seen it before
@@uncroppedsoop the only move he's truly invulnerable in is the cloak spikes, and the firestorm iirc. Every other move he makes is meant for you to dodge and counter by matching his rhythm. Sharp shadow is specially useful for dashing through his lunge and dropkick

Me fighting NKG the first time: Oh wow man this is hard, like maybe the hardest boss in the game Me after grinding the pantheon of hallownest for 3 weeks straight: You fool, you are but a pebble on the path to greatness
Yeah, NKG is one of those bosses that goes from really hard to just fun Even once you've learned him, you can't just turn your brain off and expect to win, but you can beat them without any trouble
Edited for readability: A lot of people disagree on who's harder between Grimm and The Radiance, but I think it depends on an individual's mindset, as their attack patterns are just about antithetical to each other. Grimm uses simple, easy to understand moves one at a time, but absurdly fast, requiring excellent reaction time and quick decision making, to the point of necessitating trained reflexes. The Radiance clearly telegraphs attacks, but due to variable patterns and simultaneous hazards to account for it can be a challenge to figure out how to maneuver in such a way as to not get hit. Those good at multitasking and dividing their attention will find The Radiance easier, while those good at focusing on a single task and giving all their attention to one thing will be better able to handle Grimm. Their opposite behaviors-Nightmare King Grimm rushing you down while The Radiance floats around spamming projectiles-make for a pretty interesting contrast, and support the theory that they are counterparts to each other, being so opposite in nature. TL;DR Radiance is for thinkers, while Grimm is for doers. Edit: I'm sick of seeing "I think boss A is easier than boss B." in my notifications. This chain isn't a goddamn survey. I don't want to hear your opinion unless you have something more interesting to add. At the very least say _why_ you think one is harder.
I found Radiance to be a lot more frustrating than NKG. NKG kicked my shit in, but I was having fun the whole time and figured out how to dodge everything fairly quickly, so the rest of the fight was just gitting gud and not losing focus (and just letting go of the prospect of ever being able to heal.)
It's so weird. The Radiance gave me literally no issue thanks to the wonders of Abyss Shriek, but THIS guy? I can't even TOUCH him 99% of the time. 11 masks of health? Gone in
Himiko It's easy To hit the radiance in Her 1st phase with abyss shrieks because she's kinda static. Also, she just teleport and do dont do rapid moves. However, Nightmare King compensate these 2 things
Instead, you gotta fight it like how you fought Hornet or the Mantis Lords: Evade, hit, rinse and repeat. The only exceptions are the spike attack (just evade), the flame eruption (you can get several hits and dodging it isn't really hard) and the pufferfish (basically a small dodge-a-ton).
That's why he is called Nightmare King. He will forever rule your nightmares... (Unless you develop a battle fetish for him, in which case he'll be your vampire sugar daddy, if that's any better in your opinion)
I used minion build (Grubsong, Weaversong, Glowing Womb, Defender's Crest, Sprintmaster) to take him down. It lets you focus primarily on dodging Grimm's attacks and taking opportunistic potshots with the nail instead of having to focus on offense against him. That being said, it still took WAY longer for me to beat NKG than the Radiance (where I pretty much just used Quick Slash+Mark of Pride+Unbreakable Strength with Spell Twister for cheaper Abyss Shrieks for tons of damage whenever I could hit her), and the fight where I finally beat the Nightmare King was honestly some of the most fun I've had in this game.
Team Cherry: Alright Chris, it's just a fun little game about bugs. You don't have to get to crazy with the music. Chris: *dousing his piano in gasoline* I give 110% or none at all
I tryharded that shit so much that I took just a few hours to beat it whereas the traitor lord had me stuck for more than a day. It's so much motivating when you can just return to the fight immediately after dying
traitor lord was hard for me since i kept screwing up the platforming section to get to his arena from the stag nest. it didn't help that i had sharp shadow on. eventually i had to employ cloth's help and even then barely defeated him.
@@kylestubbs8867yeah. It's because the nightmare version is faster, so i can get a good rhythm going. I can Beat the normal version hitless, but it just isn't smooth in the way that i like you know?
ha! You think? I've read people claiming over 200 attempts but I assume they're innocently exaggerating. I feel that 70 is very close to the truth in my case. I wish there was some sort of 'Attempt Counter'!
I admit I have no idea how many attempts I made on him in truth, but it sure felt like a good 100 or more attempts. I think he took me even longer to beat than The Radiance, and The Radiance feels longer because you have to fight The Hollow Knight every single time (I still wish they'd get rid of that annoying feature).
While i can't vouch for my NUMBER of attempts. I will admit it took about 2 hours with a few spare minutes to beat him back to back attempts... FOR TWO HOURS. Honestly one of the best bosses. Completely fair and balanced. if you get hit. IT'S YOUR FAULT.
Yep. Easily one of the best bosses in the game. Kinda similar to what they did with the Path of Pain i recently completed But maybe to a lesser degree. I can agree that Grimm and Nightmare King are two of the best fights in the game.
Grimm is lighthearted in the first fight with him, he goes easy on you and lets you get a feel of the rhythm and beat, and even bows before and after the fight. Such a gentleman. And then he turns on his power ballad and slaughters you in the rematch.

1:30 I can picture the grimmkin nightmares chanting “BURN THE FATHER, FEED THE CHILD” loudly and ominously on this part of the theme. Kinda badass when you think about it
0:391:253:194:55 For those of you with sharp ears, notice the melody and note progression at these places. Sounds familiar don't it? That's because its very similar to the Radience's theme. Also note that the intro and name card for the boss was also extraordinarilly similar to Radience. Further, considering that he is the Nightmare King, and that the Radiance was a sort of God-King with the power over dreams, I think it may be fair to assume Grimm to also be a Higher Being much akin to the Wyrm, Radiance, and Root, as well as possibly whatever entity/intelligence dwells within the Abyss/Void. Also, and this is speculation mind you, possibly the King Fool as well (especially considering his crowned skull and the fact that the Colosseum is located within another wyrm's cast off shell). Another speculative Higher Being is whatever that giant Trilobite in Deepnest is supposed to be, especially considering whenyou hit it or use magic on i, it lights up with runes like those found on the artifacts and alters in the Abyss. Further it also matches well to Grimm describing the Grimmchild to be an entity similar to you, considering the Hollow Vessel is an entity sired by both the Wyrm and the Void
Interesting! So the god of Dreams creates life while the god of Nightmares feasts upon their remains? I also think it's interesting to note that dreams in the game are more associated with memory and thought (like the ghosts and Whispering Roots you nail for Essence), as well as the concept of preserving oneself in stasis, as the ghosts of the various former citizens of Hallownest are meant to preserve a fragment of their existence in the ruins of their kingdom. The Radiance also utilised dreams to perpetuate herself and grow in power, refusing to accept the change in ruler. Even the Pale King used dreams and undying Dreamers to preserve his "eternal" kingdom and the Dung Defender clings on to his past stubbornly, as shown through his dream battle. However, nightmares are represented as red spirographs and more notably, scarlet flame. Fire is meant to die out naturally, but is a common symbol of rebirth and renewal. It allows a legacy to be passed on to a new generation through the sacrifice of the former ruler, from the Nightmare King to the Grimmchild. Through death and a dying kingdom, the new generation is nourished and this is (almost) completely accepted by the Grimm Troupe as the natural order of things or at least, what should happen. Instead of fighting against change and ending up perishing under blinding light or darkness, like those under the Pale King or the Radiance, the Grimm Troupe embraces change and accepts death, ultimately ensuring their continued survival and existence.
Pathfinder Savant that seems pretty probable, plus if you dream nail grim after the first fight, he will speak about the pale king, and he seems to know him or at least have heard about the wyrm, combined with his nightmare form it's more than likely he is one of the god-like creature in this world
Same. Took me a while to beat Grimm, and then NKG just slapped me. . . But as of today, I beat NKG in Ascended, taking only one hit. . . I still can't beat Grimm without taking 2 hits. . . Something's wrong here. . .
Sans becomes predictable after 15-something attempts in the sense that he uses the same pattern of attacks every single time. Undertale is also a turn based game at its core, so you get plenty of time to breathe and heal (if needed). NKG on the other hand is.... relentless
Before I fought NKG I beat the game, and the only full-screen-name boss that I found was Radiance, and suddenly I dream-nail a sleeping Grimm and see a black screen with red letters: *NIGHTMARE KING*
a god damn masterpiece. I finally found another great componist that fits to my music-taste. The music in Hollow knight did fit to the game so perfectly! The game and the music complimented each other to perfection. People really need to appreciate music in games and movies.

This boss was a tremendously shocking challenge. I thought the true final boss was difficult at first but this... this is a whole new level.... The OST helped very much keep me from getting agitated tho I wonder what other challenges the final 2 content packs will bring
Yes Exactly, Hollow. Team Cherry is using DLC for what it should be for: Adding in extra content to an already completed product, instead of holding some off. As the game is atm, it feels whole with no need for anything else. So the fact they're bothering to just shows how much they care about the game.
this is easily the best fight in the game. every attack is reactable, nothing feels unfair, it's just about responding perfectly and quickly. really like this one.
one good tip to fight NKG (and a lot of other bosses) is to start by doing a few runs that purely focus on doging and learning patterns. When you've done enough and feel like you have an answer to every attack and can recognise it, start doing your actual attemps.
SO HYPE This music is the reason I get super excited to fight Grimm! I don’t even get mad if I lose, the music is just so good that the battle feels like an adrenaline rush.
Tbh best fight in the game by a long shot. Thematically beautiful, fun as hell, challenging but not impossible (looking at you Absolute Radiance), a good reward for the Grimm child quest, rewarding in itself for 1. winning, and 2. the satisfaction of finished grimmchild, and finally, this gorgeous song to accompany it all.
i think pure vessel is a bit better honestly since they tend to string together their attacks a lot more making it more about quick decision making rather than reacting to which attack nightmare king is going to do it makes it a lot more replayable and also lets you kind of figure out your own way to do the fight i do still think nightmare king is a better fight counting the presentation and everything though frankly and they're still both absolute game design masterpieces either way
The intro to this is absolutely *terrifying*. You walk down a pathway you've never been with Grimmchild's moans being the only sound for a moment. And then the heartbeat starts. You listen to it, dread rising in your chest as you press on, coming up on Grimm twitching in his sleep. You hit him with he dreamnail, and you wake up right where you were instead of broken space. You walk down the hallway, patches and stitching carving your way forward as a heartbeat grows louder and louder, its thrums louder than yours as you panic and hope for the best. A bright, scarlet light blinds you as you walk into an area, and pulsating masks open, spewing scarlet fire and revealing a Grimm shaped figure within. The screen turns black, and the words Nightmare King Grimm cover your brain as this track starts playing. You only have 1 of 2 thoughts: This is awesome. Or, the more popular one: ... I'm screwed.
Fun story: I was in France traveling from Paris to Normandy. I stopped at a rest stop place with a convenience store type place. In there, there was this wall decoration of this CG character who vaguely looked like Grimm. Saw it and giggled. No idea what it was, and I probably should have taken a picture of it.
He is calling you for a dance. Learn the steps , don’t forget that you are in HIS stage so learn to respect that and follow his lead. Soon enough you will learn the steps and understand that this is the best boss in the entire game.
The first second when you get the title card is already enough to make this so good. Like, that single tone at 2:41. Also pro tip: Sharp shadow best charm
2:04 My favourite part. I try to use the song as a way to measure how far I am in the fight, and when it reaches this part it means I'm almost done. My hands sweat so hard when it plays that I end up making mistakes just cause I know it's almost over. In conclusion, the song was my biggest enemy when beating Nightmare King Grimm on radiant.
David Jimenez eh after getting down the pure vessel’s moves it felt easier imo. Harder than radiance sure. It’s debatable because they both took around 20 tries for me. But now knowing how to fight both of them i feel NKG is a bit more of a challenge.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Tfw you die to him more than you die to hornet in Kingdom's edge..
hes honestly not too difficult on radiant. If you've beaten him, it's only a slight challenge to do it again. Honestly, he almost becomes the easiest boss.
“Welcome to the Salty Spitoon how tough are ya?” "How tough am I? I beat the nightmare king!" "Yeah so?" "On Radiant with all four bindings" "Right this way sir" p.s i actually haven't even fought him yet
Jaisen Roa That’s not possible, since Radiant is exclusive to the Hall of Gods. Though, I shudder to even think of a Radiant Pantheon of Hallownest with all bindings...
2:26 To 2:42 is the Best part of this song and you can't change my mind(Of course theres many, MANY other places that have banger drops aswell but this is just my favorite drop🔥)
When I first saw Grimm I wasn’t aware that i had to fight him later. I said “this guys design is to cool to be a boss” and I was pleasantly surprised the first time, and pleasantly frightened for my life the second time.

This was easily the best boss fight in the game. It was super hard, but it felt fair. And this song made me not mind dying so much.

Mr. Hater well, it did feel fair but just not as fair as other bosses, it felt more like “HEY CAN YOU STOP BRUTALLY BEATING ME”
Yes, The Nightmare King is extremely difficult.
I'm not capable of it myself but I've seen it before
And also the fact that yuo lose 2 charm notches because of Grimmchild being a frickin traitor

Edited for readability:
A lot of people disagree on who's harder between Grimm and The Radiance, but I think it depends on an individual's mindset, as their attack patterns are just about antithetical to each other.
So basically Grimm is good for ADHD space cases, such as myself.
Great explanation
I found Radiance to be a lot more frustrating than NKG. NKG kicked my shit in, but I was having fun the whole time and figured out how to dodge everything fairly quickly, so the rest of the fight was just gitting gud and not losing focus (and just letting go of the prospect of ever being able to heal.)
@@SuperLlama42 it was the other way for me. Radiance was fun and grimm anoying
Pure vessel is the worst of both worlds!
Himiko im your 100th like. Welcome to triple digits

For those of you with sharp ears, notice the melody and note progression at these places.
They might be one of the oldest civilisations. Possibly before even the Radiance.
Pathfinder Savant that seems pretty probable, plus if you dream nail grim after the first fight, he will speak about the pale king, and he seems to know him or at least have heard about the wyrm, combined with his nightmare form it's more than likely he is one of the god-like creature in this world
And if the Grimm is just like a devil or something? A Radiance counterpart?

Yes Exactly, Hollow. Team Cherry is using DLC for what it should be for: Adding in extra content to an already completed product, instead of holding some off.
You only have 1 of 2 thoughts:
This is awesome.
Or, the more popular one:
... I'm screwed.
Nah actually I was thinkin : "I'm screwed... this is awesome!"

I'm pretty sure Grey Prince Zote is worse, at least after 9 successes. He damn near instakills you at max health.
HertzyandEunice well, now every boss does that in godmaster dlc when attempting radiant difficulty
you know the song is good and loved by the community when the most replayed part of the song is the end of it
Well the endboss is very chill so not a suprise
**INHUMAN SCREECHES**
I am so sorry...
But HYPE!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Tfw you die to him more than you die to hornet in Kingdom's edge..
@@pigslayer275 hornet sentinel is easy though. NKG is hard as cheese that's been in the fridge for 87 years
When I first beat this boss I yelled so loud my family thought I lost again lol
Lot of Castlevania in there. I dig it.
Feels like Legion And Nuculais boss fight
I'm so damn tired and the raw adrenaline this song gives me just with the association is incredible.
04:52 is just the best. When u hear this in game you have 1 line in your head : We in de endgame now boys
This was such a fire boss! Smiled and jammed to the music for a good 90 mins before beating it
“Welcome to the Salty Spitoon how tough are ya?”
"How tough am I? I beat the nightmare king!"
"Yeah so?"
"On Radiant"
"Right this way sir"
hes honestly not too difficult on radiant. If you've beaten him, it's only a slight challenge to do it again. Honestly, he almost becomes the easiest boss.
@@cheesewedge3777 I honestly agree , probably one of the easiest bosses in general to do on radiant , also why he is best boss
“Welcome to the Salty Spitoon how tough are ya?”
"How tough am I? I beat the nightmare king!"
"Yeah so?"
"On Radiant with all four bindings"
"Right this way sir"
p.s i actually haven't even fought him yet
“Welcome to the Salty Spitoon how tough are ya?”
"How tough am I? I beat the nightmare king!"
"Yeah so?"
"Without Jumping"
"Right this way sir"
Jaisen Roa That’s not possible, since Radiant is exclusive to the Hall of Gods.
Though, I shudder to even think of a Radiant Pantheon of Hallownest with all bindings...
You know you were in for a good long one because this is the first boss to get it’s own title card intro
