Vintage watch collector writes 25-pound book

Watch collector and historian Fredric J. Friedberg spent a decade writing a 1,600-page, five-volume book set on the history of Illinois Watch Co. The company, once a leading U.S. watch firm, has been shuttered for nearly 90 years, but Friedberg hopes his project will reinvigorate interest in the brand.

As a fan antiques, most antiques in my eyes are outdated and unappealing to the eyes. These watches are the exception. Stunning watches that are overflowing with style today.

This for me is what watch collecting is all about. You can keep your multi million dollar auctions, they are meaningless. It’s collectors like this who not only collect beautiful objects but then do serious research and produce wonderful books such as this gentleman has.
I have yet to get my first Illinois wrist watch, being top of the American horological heap I’m waiting for the right one but I have vintage Hamilton’s and Elgin’s and these American made watches offer incredible quality for the prices one pays on the vintage market compared to Swiss or Japanese watches.
What a shame that it took just ten years to see the almost complete decimation of what was an incredible watch industry that was way ahead of the Swiss when it came to mass manufactured quality. Look at a Hamilton movement from the fifties and compare it to a Swiss made Hamilton a decade later, two completely different watches in terms of quality and finish the former being several steps above the latter!

Very true. I have my grandfathers Hamilton pocket watch from 1951. He said he has never serviced it. And it still keeps perfect time. Collecting watches doesn’t have to be about the expensive names. I purchase what I like. If they happen to be expensive or popular so be it. Some of my most favorite watches are lower cost Russian ones.

You can’t have enough, as the more you have, the more you want, you can only wear one watch, as I found out, it’s it’s gold, wait for the price to go up… rare then take it easy, try and get out if that case and show the world your collection.

Great video! So is it your opinion that the Illinois New Yorker represents the highest level of mens art deco beauty? I have one of them in 21 jewels as well as a Hamilton Square B engraved case that also represents this same late 1920s period of fine watch making.
