grew up as a kid watching his videos. he died when i was 15. im not an emotional person (didnt cry at mums funeral nor likely my dads next week despite being great parents) but this destroyed me at the time and even a little teary now. amazing man in every sense of the word.
The Guinness amongst the flowers and the steeple made me lose it. I learned his story much too late. I would have gladly travelled across the pond to pay respects to a man I never new or met, last of a generation, peace good man
I saw a clip of Fred where someone innocently and meaning well handed him a hot Melton Mowbray pork pie, a staple food in Northern England. Fred looks at it doubtfully for a few seconds before accepting it. He remarks that he hopes his wife doesn't find out about it. Apparently she had being trying, vainly, to get Fred on to a healthy diet for his own benefit. With all due respect to Mrs Dibnah I sided with Fred.
I used to watch all of his programs on TV. Watching them again on youtube now. An amazing man, but Fred would have laughed and said he was just an ordinarry bloke.Just watched him ladder a 50 ft overhang on some monster of a chimney. Balls of steel.They didn't make too many like him during his days, they certainly don't make any like him now.
Fred was a good friend, I went to his funeral. We all got very wet that day, It rained tears. After he was layed to rest the sun came out.the suns rays shone over Bolton .Now in heaven with I K Brunel, his hero.
Yes, that is respectful...but is it disrespectful to offer such a man a round of applause as his coffin processional passes? What do you think Fred would've enjoyed better?

Your talent, charisma and personality outshone them all. Nobody on God's earth will ever have your knowledge or skillset again. Forever missed by Bolton's finest. Remember you always. God bless your remaining wife's and children, may they each have worry free and successful lives.

My dad worked for a very Dickensian company called The Whitechapel Bell Foundry, he hung bells and it wax hard cold work, often in towers in freezing cold winter says with horizontal rain. Even the bell Foundry had a line shaft but powered by electricity. Sadly the company closed last year and was mentioned in the Guiness book of records as Britains oldest manufacturing company established in 1570.
You never know he might have met him,i went round to his house about three times always had time for you and would take you in the kitchen and make you a cup of tea cheers Steve ..

Fred said when he was a child there was 200 smokestacks in Bolton. He toppled 90 of them. Not bad for one man.
