The car so good it shocked Ferrari

  • Ferrari dominated the 2004 F1 season, crushing its underachieving opposition and wrapping up both world championships early. It achieved that with a car that was so good from the moment it hit the track, that the team was convinced it had done something wrong. In this video we tell the story of how Ferrari tried to get to the bottom of what had gone wrong with the build of the car, while drivers Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello were convinced the pace was real.

If there’s one car that represents F1 to the fullest that’s got to be the one. Back then even people who weren’t interested in F1 at all knew who Schumacher was and always associated the sport with that legendary Ferrari. Posters of it were everywhere. Not a single domination afterwards has struck such cultural impact. Not Alonso, not Vettel, not Hamilton. Schumacher to F1 is what Jordan is to Basketball. The ultimate icon and face of the sport.

People say the Schumacher dominance era was boring but the races were actually really enjoyable.
They were more 'organic' and drivers were having close battles up and down the grid.
The Red Bull and Mercedes eras have been genuinely boring because drivers can't race close to each other for more than a couple of laps and even then, they push a button when they want to overtake, and half the time it ends a crash.

"Which Ross Brawn believes to this day was designed to bring an end to their success"
Ehm...what do you mean "Ross Brawn believes"? It was confirmed by many, including Bernie Ecclestone himself, that stopping Ferrari winning everything was one of the main objectives of introducing 2005 rules.
And now we have Mercedes domination (a much more severe domination and much worse for the sport, by the way, since it's up from 60-70% poles/races for Ferrari to nearly 85% poles/races for Mercedes) and we don't have a rule change to adress that. F1 in 2019 is boring beyond belief since you already know the names of 1-2, the only question is the order.

    • @CdH94
      @CdH94 5 ปีที่แล้ว +186

If anything the 2019 regs helped Mercedes by getting rid of their only real weakness - the thinner gauge tires being season long is a pretty convenient plus for Mercedes, and has hurt everyone else. Remember their private tests with Pirelli in 2013? Something stinks.

you don't even need to bring up the % of poles/wins, just look at the average gaps between Mercedes/Pole to the next non-Mercedes car from any 4 year period starting in 2014 and compare it to ANY other team/cars in the modern era.
Most dominant cars ever and there's evidence to show that Mercedes never utilised them to their full potential from 2014 to 2016 either due to them being so far ahead, with the laps after the late race safety car in Bahrain in 2014 would arguably be the only time they did so in race trim and despite both their driver fiercely battling they still managed to pull out 24 seconds in 10 laps.
Despite that, here we are about to see Mercedes probably win all but 2-3 races (if we're lucky) of the 2019 season and with pretty dull racing to boot if we're honest. The V8 era from 2009-13 brought about the most entertaining and closest seasons F1 has had, even with Vettel comfortably winning in '11 and '13 when the teams showed up each weekend we'd not know for sure who would win, now if a Mercedes leads out of turn 1 it's race over.

The 2005 rules were indeed to bring an end to Ferrari domination, and it was the right call just like in 2009, now the FIA doesn't seem all that interested in putting an end to the V6 hybride embarrassing era for F1.
Ferrari wasn't all that dominate, in both 2000 and 2003 McLaren was so close, the same goes for Williams, for one simple reason back then teams could develop their cars not like now when basically they are all stuck, Mercedes got lucky with their engine design the others weren't allowed to develop theirs, and this year the rules essentially eliminated the last weakness of the Mercedes namely tyre temperature.

@@katout75 Not possible. Allison joined Mercedes in 2017 and was also responsible the Benetton B195 (by far the succesfull car for that team without cheating) for the dominating Ferraris from 2000 to 2005, the Renault of 2006 and the Mercedes W08 (2nd half of the season), W09 and W10 EQ Power+. To me that's a pretty solid career if you ask me.

@@sekhyhybrid6701 I meant Aldo Costa, he's semi-retired now living in Italy. Previously he lived in the UK designing the chassis for MB after leaving Ferrari. I agree Allison is a great asset to MB, but he's never been the chief chassis designer. He's sorta like Ross Brawn as both were Technical Directors at very successful F1 teams, but neither AFAIK chief F1 chassis designers like Chapman/Murray/Barnard/Newey/Costa/Bryne

"The focus of the 2004 car was to lower the center of gravity and improve weight distribution. Also, many body parts were redesigned to improve air flow." Very much the same forward thinking concept of the 1988 Mclaren mp4-4 that dominated with Senna/Prost.

They definitely will. They've no plan of leaving and have the most money. There's gonna be a good amount of WCCs in the future
