One of my first memories of F1 was seeing Ayrton Senna in the Lotus 98T. Morning warm up session 1986 British Grand Prix and just remember how bright Senna's helmet was against the black a gold car. It really was a beautiful machine

That Eagle really was something else, a real beauty.
Sometimes I wish F1 designers didn’t know so much about aerodynamics. The simple and elegant designs from previous eras made for some beautiful cars.
And racing.....which depends more on drivers skills than engineers
Fighter planes don't need barge boards, right? You should get your wish in 2022: return to ground effects and more emphasis on mechanical grip.
I agree but the f2007 and mp4/22 were full of aero but still very nice
I don’t think I can say the same for me. I love the deep complexity and all the bits and pieces and weird shapes to exploit the rules. One for me that I really like and I know people don’t is the 2012 Sauber with the nose, nice and geometric, and straightforward. And the complex front wings and stuff. I really liked it

I agree, so different than many of that year! My fave was the Brabham BT54 1985 though, just a little more elegant.
I'm so pleased that the Ferrari 640 & 641 get the recognition they deserve at the top spot. It's BY FAR the most beautiful F1 car ever made. Even as a young kid I absolutely adored that car. It's aesthetically perfect in every way imaginable, even the world famous MoMA art gallery in New York has a 641 on display. You know it's a masterpiece when even snobby art curators & critics recognize just how beautiful that car is.

The mp4/4 is literally everyone's first thought of what a f1 looks like. It's the standard by which all others are judged
In my mind, the McLaren MP4-4 is THE Formula 1 car. It captures what an F1 car is at it's essence.
I think the F2004 deserves to be on the list if not n°1
I missed the no 1 card and fully expected to hear something like “the only thing more beautiful than Mansell’s machine was it’s 2004 heir”. But I wouldn’t be able to single out the one car to kick from this list to make room for that beauty...

16:28 People usually name John Bernard but actually they forget about the real genius behind semi-automatic transmissions: Mauro Forgheri. In 1979 after winning the championship, Forgheri came up with the idea of automating the transmission in a way that the driver would not require to use a clutch pedal. The Ferrari 312 EVO was the fist mule (A modified 312 T3) they developed this until they aplied to the 640, but it wasn't very reliable, they solved this for the next year with the 641. Since 1993 almost every team use this transmission.
The title has given me a newfound respect for the admin

This list basically shows us that cars from the late 80s/early 90s are the peak era on aesthetics for an F1 car, which is not a lie.
One of my personal favorites has to be the Simtek S941. It was slow, underpowered and Ratzenberger lost his life in that car but i just love the looks of it...
