    Ok, so TONS of people asked for this early, so here it is! It was a bit of a beast to edit but I LOVE THIS BUMPER... so far.
    We also ran some tests to see how it all worked out and got stuck while filming!
    Oh, and I also did some other stupid stuff but LEARNED a lot!

    In case you weren’t aware,you NEVER want to get sand in your synthetic winch rope if at all possible.It degrades it so quickly and you will end up destroying it’s weight rating.I am a huge proponent of synthetic winch rope(dyneema)but it has to be cared for.Every time you come back from a trip-I have found a quick and effective way to handle this-fill a plastic garbage pail with soapy water and spool the Cable into it-wash it with your hands and stir with a broom.It works great-all the sand will be on the bottom and not in your winchrope.

    😆 The struggle is real! 2 things:
    1) I respect you for showing your struggles, and being honest with yourself and the viewers.
    2)It is a good looking set up, though the led lights seem a bit weak to me.
    Anyway, good job. As a man near 50 that has always worked with his hands, I can only imagine how daunting some of these tasks could be to a person lacking experience and tools. I respect those unafraid to ask questions and try.

  • @rbuste

    Jason I love your videos, you're not shy about showing the struggles that 90% of us have when DIYing modifications on our vehicles. A safety tip for the winch while spooling line back in, give yourself plenty of room between where you grab the line to provide tension and the fairlead entrance. Many people have managed to suck there own hand into the fairlead. If at all possible use a second person and have them grab by the hook or hook tag if you have one. If you're alone just give yourself about 6 feet or so until you spool in enough line and the hook tag is available to grab on to. Stay safe.

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      rbuste I appreciate that!! I don't think I was grabbing it hard enough for that to have happened but I can see how it could happen under the right circumstances. I also should have been wearing gloves. I'll get better the more I use it!

    I love the Dremel tool! the cool thing is you can use it with a power converter which allows you to do cuts in the field. Great video, 4-5 hours is a great estimate when you are in a shop and have done it before...ALL DAY is a good allotment of time for any big project.

  • @strizzo
    @strizzo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    One thing - don't power out the winch for long periods. There is an internal brake inside the drum that the motor pushes against in reverse, which heats up the drum. Normally not an issue but with synthetic line you can melt the line on the drum. Any time you need to run a significant amount of line, use the clutch, it'll be much quicker as well.
    Bumper and light bar look great.

    Couple tips...
    Don't use your torque wrench as a breaker bar. If you only ever use it for lug nuts, it's probably fine, but if accuracy is important, overloading it can damage the tool. A small pipe on a quality ratchet is slightly better, double box end wrenches (you can lock an open end into a closed end to double the length) is a little better, but a proper breaker bar is best.
    On learning how to use a winch and stuff... Join a local 4x4 club, plenty of guys that can help you learn in a safe environment. That winch line could have snapped a ball joint, axle, or the line itself!
    Pulling on that log you really didn't need a line weight due to the lack of serious load, but being a new rope, there could have been a factory defect that you didn't see, so it'a always best to play it safe no matter how small the pull!
    Keep the video's coming! I look forward to seeing you at Expo East!

    First off, watched a bunch of your videos, keep it up.
    Secondly as you said you are still learning therefore mistakes are allowed, no doubt about that.
    New winch and line: go to parking lot with big old cement bock or equivalent to clip on to, with line all out, put truck in neutral and winch in line to pretension it. Depending on winch weight requirement should be around 500lbs resistance therefore finding a slight incline is best.
    I realize this was the point of the last few minutes in the sand to pretension it, however sand with give a varying loads on the winch line. Filming in a parking lot is boring I know, and would only end in mall crawler jokes obviously so I get the sand for effect.
    Keep enjoying your truck!

    P.S. It may be just a pet peeve of mine because it is a very common thing here on youtube but next time you work on stuff i would recommend closed toe shoes. dropping that bumper or winch on a barefoot would not be enjoyable.

    Bumper looks fantastic. I agree on the weight issue, but I think the number one use of my bumper will be deflecting deer strikes.. I am going with a full ARB Summit bar on my LR4, So that for me means ~170lb summit bar, along with the ~75lb Zeon Platinum 10S winch.
    A low profile bumper or something that doesn't have hoops near the full width of the hood isn't going to protect well, and would bust the $1k+ headlights or whatever they cost. Just make sure you hit the animals dead center! :D
    The LR4 doesn't have that bad ass front end good looks to maintain like the newer runners. I'd probably build one of those if I hadn't been bitten with the rover bug.

      Geez. I keep hearing all the comments about hitting deer. How many of you guys are actually hitting deer?? I grew up in Maine...have hit 2. First in a jeep with a full front bumper and winch. Thing trashed fenders hood windshield. The last reason is but a number is for deer strikes! But that's just my opinion. This thing looks awesome and houses a winch. And for the fools that park and bump into u....they're gonna hav a little mark on their vehicle.

    • @IowaLR4
      @IowaLR4 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm in Iowa. But I've hit several, in many vehicles. So far none have disabled the vehicle, luckily mostly side strikes. But the last one I hit was a full sized buck and could have taken out a radiator pretty easily. I kinda worry about it even more when out in places like Montana... very far away from help and very high density of critters to hit. From what I read, a bull bars primary function is animal strikes. It just happens to also be a good place to mount a winch and lights. But you can recover a vehicle in several ways (especially with a group), but only one thing protects the front of your rig.

    I dont know if it's a midlife crisis or if you are just finally trying to enjoy the things you find interesting. But it's kinda cool to watch. Just try to involve your kids even more. Not that I care to see them but you never get that time back with them.

    Go to your local Harbor Freight and get a few magnetic catch-all bowls for keeping track of all loose hardware.

    I’ll be honest..
    i don’t overland, I just go on trips a few times a year, I like the 4Runner for the snow, I like the aggressive look. Put some better shocks to make it a smoother ride and tints 5%.. Ditch lights because I think they’re helpful when driving at night in back roads.
    Done..
