How to Set Up your Apple Airpods Pro as Hearing Aids: Guide and Review 2023

  • Since launching in October 2019, Apple has sold tens of millions of AirPods Pro earbuds in the US alone. That means a significant (and growing) percentage of the US population has instant access to advanced wireless earbuds that provide personalized amplification, digital noise reduction, and sophisticated beam-forming directional microphones-technologies that are more often associated with medical-grade hearing aids. And with AirPods Pro priced at or below $199, the technology is far more accessible than traditional hearing aids.
If you own a pair of AirPods Pro, and have no worse than a mild-to-moderate hearing loss, there's no reason not to grab your pair right now and set them up as "hearing aids" by following this simple instructional video. I'll cover all the things I love about the AirPods, and I'll also go over a few of the limitations and things you may want to consider before making the AirPods your daily driver for hearing loss correction.

Thank you! So informative. I'm 73, had mild hearing loss dating back to childhood measles. I compensated with lip reading, but my schoolwork suffered.
The hearing loss has accelerated with age. Saw audiologist a few months ago, hearing aids recommended. Combination of cost, multiple visits for adjustments, and recommendation that they be worn all the time was discouraging.
I heard about airpod pro and started researching. I need a new phone anyway, so bought a refurbished iphone. Also ordering refurbished air pod pro 2nd generation.
Your information is what enabled me to go ahead.

I used AirPods Pro as hearing aids for a few weeks to convince myself that hearing aids would help. I used an audio gram from a free hearing assessment from a high street chain audiologist. The improvement was so great that I then wanted hearing aids as soon as possible. As a side effect, I was able to have my aids set to 100% from day 1 as I was already used to the correction. I’ve now been wearing my P90R aids for about 15 hours per day every day for a month and love them.

You can use one ear pod at a time to extend the battery life. It’s a work around to charging and gives the people around you to know that you are using them to hear with.
And when both are in it means you are listening to some thing and you don’t want them to bother you :)

Thank you for this informative video. Guessing most people looking for an alternative to traditional hearing aids are doing it in part because of cost savings. Would love it if the makers of traditional hearing aids could find a way to manufacture and sell them at a more reasonable cost. Those of us who are retired don’t (or can’t) necessarily want to spend 4-5000 dollars on aids. AirPods may be a realistic alternative.

Thanks for this very informative video. Actually, I purchased a pair of Airpods Pro 2 after I watched your video. After some learning and adjustments, I found the Airpods Pro 2 can function as decent hearing aids. Your video mentioned lots of some cons of using the Airpods as hearing aids, and they were spot on. I truly believe the Apple is up to something tangible in this area. By the way, have you tried ways to reduce the occlusion effects like echoes (most-annoying I might add) of own voices and other bodily sounds? Only way I could reduce the occlusion effect is to reduce the volume.

This is a great video. I’ve been wearing various Bluetooth earbuds as aids for years. I’m just about ready to purchase another set of iPod pros. Two set in years is still a third from the proper audiologist recommended aids. My hearing is bad. But not REALLY bad. Same with my sight. Not horrible, but enough that I debate between pharmacy glasses, or my proper ones. The propers, I’ve spent the same on pharmacy ones cause I need them and forgot to keep mine with me.
Same as hearing. And, I can listen to tunes & videos like these without disruption.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain how AirPod Pro's can be used as a psuedo -hearing aid. As an audiophile with moderate upper frequency hearing loss I find I spend a lot of time with my hands cupped aroung my ears to recapture that part of the audio spectrum that my unaided ears simply can no longer hear. The investment in the AirPods is minor in comparison to the prices of the top brand hearing aids. And if they work, well then...SCORE!

Being as I am currently bouncing through various hearing aids that my audiologist has available, with an apparently unique use case of needing Bluetooth compatibility that can switch quickly between phone and multiple PCs using multiple online meeting products (WebEx, MS Teams, Skype, Zoom, and GoToMeeting), I have not yet found any hearing aid that supports my use case. However, you have given me an alternative to consider while I wait for the industry to release an actual Bluetooth 5.2 supported hearing aid with quality hearing enhancement capabilities.

Great video: balanced and clear (like we'd like the sound to be). I would edit at the very end to make it clear that it's not the visit to the audiologist that costs thousands, it's the hearing aids; the price tag is on the technology. A clinical evaluation shouldn't be more than a couple hundred, at most, and it's worthwhile to get an accurate, thorough hearing test and also evaluation for further referral.
It's great to see audio tech integrating the information we have on hearing to produce a better experience for the listener, instead of depending on trial and error with manual settings.

One thing to remember is that the hearing aid manufacturers are making obscene amounts of money from a device which doesn’t cost very much to produce. The R&D is minimal and the competition is almost non existent. The very very small amount of manufacturers have had a cartel for decades.
One other point to make is the Apple M2 chip is so advanced that there is no other chip that can come close to its processing power. Hearing aid manufacturers cannot compete with the Apple tech but with misinformation they will muddy the waters.

So time to time I was thinking this would be great as I can pop them on say when watching TV for 30 in instead of going to put on my traditional hearing aids. I have issues with the earpod pros stopping acting like a hearing aid, time to time, like when I lock my phone so its inconsistent.

I've been wearing Philips 9030's for about 7 months now and slowly getting used to them. My major complaint is what they do to the sound of my guitars, especially my acoustic guitars. It makes them sound very tinny and metallic, especially the smaller 4 strings. I've found that my noise reduction program, which has all noise reduction on and at max, helps a bunch. But what really works it seems are my Airpods pros. I have the latest version (with my audiogram loaded) and I always use them for live music like concerts where they active noise cancellation helps so much. I have an extreme sensitivity to loud noises. Today I tried the airpods with my worst acoustic guitar and low and behold, it sounded so much better than my 9030's. While the thinner strings were bright and clear I experienced no metallic of tinny sounds and the bass notes were much richer! Amazing and I know part of that is the occluding nature of these airpods.
I plan to try them tonight at a jam I'm attending. Comfort is another story as is that occlusal effect and short battery life.
So while the airpods work in music situations and especially streaming music, they fail as an all day hearing aid. Wish my Costco fitter could help more with my HA but these are probably not going to be much better than this. I might try the Widex someday since I hear many musicians raving about the near zero delay, but the cost is way too much for me right now. Thanks for the review.

Regarding the receiver being in the centre; the benefit of binaural hearings is to help with localisation and hearing in background noise. With a single central receiver you wouldn’t gain that benefit.

Just wish to offer some user feedback for anyone who, like me, has a typical age-related high frequency hearing loss at the worse end of moderate. With great anticipation I purchased airpods pro second generation along with an iphone a few days ago (still much cheaper than hearing aids!) and have been testing out the hearing aid capabilities for a few days now. To put it simply, the airpods pro do not offer anywhere near enough amplification for my level of hearing loss unfortunately, even when set to maximum. Still, it is wonderful technology and I will certainly monitor future advances. For anyone with a mild hearing loss however, I believe they might be quite helpful. Battery life is of course another major problem and this needs to be significantly improved. For the time being, I have reverted to using my Etymotic analogue hearing amplifiers which offer slightly more amplification and have batteries that last about a week.

My take on ‘OTA, Self-fitting hearing aids’ is that the world (consumers and suppliers) is not waiting for the US FDA’s blessing. The race was on to incorporate Self-fitting, hearing-aid functionality into earbuds (a.k.a. airpods earphones headphones, airbuds, etc.). Self-fitting, hearing-aids are here now in the form of Apple Air Pods Pro, etc. Self-fitting hearing aids now are essentially another set of apps installed on your earbuds. Don’t expect these apps to be called hearing-aids.

About 15 years ago I was diagnosed with meniere's disease and have almost lost the hearing in my right ear, and was given the (BTE) style hearing aids by my local NHS hearing centre, but after a year of trying to get used to them, I ended up giving them back because I found them to be more of a hinderance than a help because I had to turn them up so loud that they would be whistling, I also found they would pick up so much background noise that I couldn't hear what people were saying to me, especially in crowded areas ie supermarkets etc, and I had to take them out to answer the phone, because they were so basic with no telephone switch or bluetooth, so couldn't be used with my iPhone either, I've got a pair of AirPods Pro but they have a nasty habit of falling out of my ears, so it looks like I'm going to have to spend a fortune on the ones that go deep inside your ear canal, sadly.

Thank you very much for your very thorough review and links. Yes, I most definitely will buy these instead of hearing aids but I am waiting for the updated AirPods Pro 2, hopefully later this year. I have mild-moderate hearing loss but in addition I also have essential tremor (ET). My iPhone and iPad for me are essential and invaluable tools for assisting with managing ET. For six months in late 2021 I persevered with the top of the range Starkey RIC hearing aids, and while sound quality was adequate they could not easily switch between my devices using Bluetooth so they were returned for a refund. Apple can manage bluetooth seamlessly. I would happily buy two pairs of AirPods for a much lesser price than hearing aids to manage the battery life issue. My only concern is the occlusion effect and whether I will be able to wear the AirPods all day with reasonable comfort. I am very keen to hear your review when the new updates are released.

Thank you. I've had an audiogram and have tried hearing aids by Phonak ($5,000), Jabra, and the brand new Sony OTD devices, and have not been happy with any of the results. With my 'moderate' hearing loss, particularly in the midrange frequencies, my greatest challenge is being in a social or business event environment and being able to converse. The second challenge is talking on the phone has become increasingly difficult. My hope is that streaming phone conversations directly into my ear will alleviate this concern.. this did work well with the Phonak devices but extremely poorly with the Sony OTC. My Airpod PRO 2's are arriving today, and I look forward to reporting back after trying them out!

If I’m shopping in a loud store or don’t want to hear the screaming baby in a flight, I put them in ANC mode. If I can still hear what I’m trying to avoid, they are really, really loud and someone else is likely to complain soon.

Actually, once I got a white cane and took it everywhere, they did treat me differently, but in a much different way than I had expected. Just about everybody I encounter, even perfect strangers, is very supportive. I suspect thje same thing would be true if I told people I was wearing AirPods as hearing aids.
