Awesome video Danny. I’ll be changing the oil coming up this weekend after seeing your video. Also installing a MGW short shifter. Thank you for the great videos.
Both would work. My brother went with penzoil syncromesh because everyone on svtp said it was what GM uses for their t-56s. I have dexron 3 AFT right now for my break in with the new input shaft, then I have some new Tremec HP manual transmission fluid I’ll be putting in after a few thousand miles
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage thank you for the urgent response, love the videos you and your brother put out. I've heard some people swear by Mobil 1 ATF and others say it ruins the internals of the transmission. Any opinions? I reached out to Tremec and their response was to look at my owners manual.
@@ikramnanlawala4843 In some transmissions like the 5 speed tr3650 it recommends not using synthetics because the syncros have carbon fiber and card board (yes card board) and it makes it too slick. I tried a number of things and still ran mobil 1 full synthetic aft and was fine. For the terminator I’d get the tremec MTF HP since they say it works in all their manual transmissions
Hey Danny! I got this project done today to my 04 cobra. Thanks for another great video! I also installed a MGW short throw shifter. The shifter is such a huge upgrade. The shifter seems to be functioning great, but I noticed once I put everything back together that the plastic dash piece that has the cigarette lighter on it now moves a lot when I shift. Seems that the powder coated clamp holding the shifter to the handle is much larger than the stock piece and barely fit under the metal bezel's rubber boot. Every time I shift, I can see the cigarette lighter moving back or forth. You ever experience this? Any ideas to alleviate the issue? Maybe some soft rubber pieces to fill the void between the dash pieces? Cut the bezel's boot?
On my MGW, I had to put a slit in the rubber so it would slide over the entire handle and even onto the base. Just make sure yours isn’t bulging over the handle
Got out there this morning and slit the boot. It helped a lot. Still getting some movement, but it’s not as pronounced. Going to drive it for a while and keep an eye on it. Thanks!
Thanks for a great video! Getting ready to do my trans fluid change and took the shifter off to get ready for pouring in the fluid. At the same time thought i would change out the plastic bushing that the shifter end fits into in the top of the tans. I have a new brass bushing. however, I cannot get the old plastic bushing out. Any Suggestions?
I’ve been told that older T56s such as mine in my fbody Camaro don’t do well with synchromesh fluid due to the paper synchos blockers. Any truth to this?
I’ve had some friends do it (it’s like some oversized 18mm washer or something if that’s what you’re taking about?). I haven’t installed it or needed it
I have an 04 cobra, followed your video to the T. Everything came out perfect. My dad has an 03 and had his serviced at a local ford dealer. He put valvoline synchromesh in the tranny and now it shifts like poop. When you get over 3k rpm the shifter gets hard to pull especially out of 3rd then it won't go into gear until you wiggle the hell out of the shifter, something let's go and it shifts fine. Could it be a Fluid issue? Or clutch adjustment issue? Thank you for your videos. Especially the cobra alternator vid.
It depends on if your trans is stock or built. If you’re not running a lot of hp/tq through it, the penzoil synchromesh like the video would be fine, but royal purple would be a good fluid as well
Thanks. Stock t56, car has bolt ons, I'm at a shade shy of 500 rwhp. I just got the car, so not sure what's been put in there before. I'm about to order some fluid but keep hearing different opinions.
@@SVTgotti You’ll get all kinds of answers on this one. The penzoil shown in this video works well (apparently it’s the gm synchromesh they add from the factory). Tremec will only recommend Penzoil syncromesh shown in the video or motorcraft atf, but Amsoil, royal purple, mobil 1 full synthetic ATF will likely work. Must be dexron 3
Danny, I am swapping my 99 cobra differential out for the Ford Performance Traction-LOK Limited Slip Differential w/ Carbon Discs - 31 Spline to beef up the rear and swap in the 03-04 Cobra halfshafts. Can you/have you done a differential fluid swap how-to or do you know how many quarts of fluid the 8.8 IRS differential needs? I picked up 3 quarts of the 75W-90 RP fluid but wasn't sure if it would be enough.
On IRS if you don't have the fill and drain plug with the aftermarket diff cover, you'll need to drop the differntial (that's the proper proceedure). I’d recommend when you swap you get an aftermarket cover. I don't see why you couldn't drain it with the drain plug and then fill it through the half shaft side hole. If you want to try that, here is my half shaft removal video th-cam.com/video/4VEq9R000M8/w-d-xo.html
IF you ultimately do need to remove the differential, I have a video on that (with the axle video needing to watch and remove first) th-cam.com/video/cykWm0n08Hc/w-d-xo.html
I still have the factory diff cover because I am running a Steeda Diff Brace and I wasn't sure what aftermarket covers were compatible with the Steeda Diff Brace. I do like the idea of just filling it through the half shaft hole. So, it's 3 full quarts of fluid I am guessing then?
With the stock cover it’s around 2 quarts total. If you get royal purple it already has friction modifier (But I also ran royal purple and a bottle of friction modifier and was fine), so you may need to substitute the friction modifier for some of the fluid. With an aftermarket diff cover they usually have a higher capacity. Here is what I found: 4 oz of Friction modifier - part EST-M2C118-A or equivalent 1.23-1.37 Liters (2.6-2.9 pints) of rear axle lubricant. 80W-90 weight. Part number WSP-M2C197-A

MRON 1 Nice! good luck
Great video Danny. Here pretty soon I'ma do all kinds of fluid changers for my Cobra. Your videos will definitely help me do it right! Cheers!!
Thanks for watching. Glad to hear that. You’ll do great!
Good quality video, thanks for the Knowledge
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it
Looks like alot more work, then just using the fill port
It can be a little messy with a pump and not getting all the fluid through the lines. Either way works and this is just another option
Even though the label on the side of the transmission from the manufacturer recommends Dexron III ATF, you'd say go with a Synchromesh?

Tremec MTF HP over the GM Synchromesh?
Again thank you so much and sorry for the millions of questions.
Hey Danny, is there a difference between the black label Pennzoil synchromesh, and the red label Pennzoil synchromesh???
I don’t know. I bought the new tremec manual transmission fluid they sell

This is true. 01/02 Fbody cars used carbon vs paper in 98/00.
