Incase you haven't figured it out already, the "Poly" in Polygondwanaland is in reference to the concept of poly-rythms which the whole album is built around.
This album is so cool. It is organized into 3 separate song suites, each being thematically connected and yet unique and to top it off the Gizz released it completely free for fans so you can even do your own vinyl pressing if you want to. Side two is just crazy. Can't wait for you to take a listen to the Horology suite. Thank you for giving us your thoughts!
I still remember buying their Beatles esque Papier Mache Dream Balloon when that came out and loving that they sounded a bit like this...a bit like that.....but absolutely, totally fully formed and like themselves....a fantastic achievement /combination. They have a freedom in their set up that shines through well whatever angle they have approached each album so far.... More power to them.🖤👍
Also just saw them at Red Rocks two nights in a row the other week. As you said they are something else entirely live. Definitely try to check them out on their upcoming EU tour!
@@JimNewstead Ohh, this video doesn't seem to be available for some reason. I'm not sure if it's geoblocked in Germany then? Which would be weird because the album is free and basically in the public domain.
I live in Edinburgh. I have 2 tickets. The only band I will travel so far to see. I saw them Glasgow Barrowlands just before the pandemic struck, never thought it would be another 3 1/2 years. At least they managed to cobble an album together in this time. 🤣
So glad you brought up On The Run by Floyd! I picked that out on the first listen and it cemented my love for the band - from there i explored the rest of KGATLW’ discography and haven’t been disappointed yet! Have you checked out other records of theirs?
My first listen to this and totally enjoyed and appreciated it, and my son is presently the drummer for a Black Sabbath tribute band called Bit of Finger so I texted him to check out your TH-cam video of this album. Myself, I love your reviews, especially since you listen to the vinyl versions. And I wouldn’t be me without you also check out the music of Jethro Tull ( an album every year from 1968-1980). Plus there are live concert videos, but I recommend that you listen to the studio version of each album before seeing the live performances. I saw. them six times from’71-79. Knowing the album songs before you see them live makes the live performance an incredible experience! So expand your love of music to include some of the best songs ever by master musicians. Great work you are doing and thank you!
My (sometimes second, sometimes outright) favourite album from my favourite band. Hearing Crumbling Castle live in Montreal just last week will forever be one of the most amazing experiences of my life. What an album.
Oh yeah, this is a treat! I love that you thought you might not remember Crumbling Castles until that little hook/motif popped its head up at @3:21 and said hi, lol. Man, you might never run out of KGLW to react to at the pace they are going. I am very happy to see you taking a full album dive here, enjoy.
I was wondering just a few minutes ago when that video would come out! I'll have to wait when I get back from work to watch it but I already know this is going to be a treat, my favorite album from my favorite band!
In case no one mentioned it and you don't already know the title "Polygondwanaland" is a portmanteau of the words polygon and gondwanaland with Gondwanaland being the name of a prehistoric supercontinent that broke away from the earlier larger and more well known supercontinent of Pangea.
I love that this album was released under a creative commons licence. Free for all to reproduce and release their own pressing of it. Makes the discogs page a bit of a mess though.
Glad to see you come back 'round to KGLW, but the reason you hear two different rhythms might be because they had 2 drummers at the time... which still baffles me
It’s two different rhythms because the album was written around polyrhythmic patterns, each drummer played a different rhythm and syncopated only on certain beats. This extends to the guitar and vocal work too
Love this band! And their stretch of releases from "i'm in your mind - fuzz" up to "infest the rats nest" was the band at the absolute peak for me. Haven't heard the latest two ones, yet. Those tranc-y synth patterns you get on this album are something you'd hear sometimes by Gong as well.
I was thinking, that first track sounded a little bit like King Crimson, a bit like Gentle Giant, and a little bit like Gong. My first hearing of these guys. I'm impressed.
I think if I made two piles of their albums (I've got about 3 quarters of their discography) half of the albums are like this one where nearly all the songs transition into eachother like a series of movements....the other half are mostly more song based....
Amazing band! In some regards, they are doing something somewhat similar to what The Mars Volta has been doing. Not sounding very much like them, but the integrity and freedom with which they explore opportunities 😍
Yup, they are def in the same wheelhouse as the awesome Gentle Giant. Saying that they do also offer much much more... as well as that modern spin on those 70s prog sensibilities there's metal, jazz, rnb, rock, krautrock, synth, conceptual, crazy, offbeat, acoustic,....so epic, varied and still a really young career. For me they are contenders with Opeth as the best band in the world at moment....the sheer prolific energy, consistent excellence, talent and execution of their albums is def no.1 All hail Spring Chizzard and the Plizzard Mizard!🌍🏆👏👍🥳
Sorry Jim, Heard this album already on JustJP’s channel. But I’ll listen to it again because I can’t remember how it sounded. 1. Now I do remember. It sounds like a big jam session. Interesting rhythms; jolly music; very nice. Don’t like the end of the song. 2. A hint of King Crimson I think. I like it. 3. A hint of Gentle Giant also but Gentle Giant sings a lot better. This band does a sort of speaking on a certain note in stead of singing properly. Music is interesting and quite good. 4. A bit of the same.
@@alexgleason7302 since when am I ‘so negative’. I liked a lot of this songs only certain elements I didn’t like and I will name them. I give my honest comments.

Side two reminds me of Floyds DSOTM - its my favourite part of Poly for sure, suit’s evening unwind time or tokin’ time perfectly
Glad to see you finally back on KGLW! Poly is one of my top 3 favorites of theirs.
One of the best live bands in the world right now!

Crazy to think that Paper Mache was their 7th album, and only in 3 years. King Gizzard are the definition of prolific.
Also just saw them at Red Rocks two nights in a row the other week. As you said they are something else entirely live. Definitely try to check them out on their upcoming EU tour!
They're playing tonight down here in New Orleans. Unfortunately, I am totally unable to make it out on a Thursday night to go see them.
Waiting for Side 2! It's even better

Yes. YEEEEEEEES! If you love cool synth sounds, the second chorus of inner cell will blow your socks off! fantastic album!
Polygondwanaland is the album that got me hooked on Gizz. I hope they make a heavy progressive metal album 🤞🏻
Still waiting for that one myself, Rats Nest is thrashy but I’m more of a prog metal fan. Fingers crossed!
Lo and behold, you got one now
Wish granted
Polygondwanaland (song) is in 5/4 👍🏼
They are playing in London at Brixton 02 academy for 2 nights in March there are still tickets available, just a heads up

Jim... I love this band
You have to listen to the 3 album's from October one time, amazing stuff.
Yes! What a wonderful pick!
It's crazy, this album was gratis when it came
still free on the king gizzard website
Yesss! Soo happy to see you react to this incredible, wonderful and brilliant album!
Definitely in my top 20 favorite KGLW albums. Maybe even top 5. Crumbling Castle is a top 5 song that’s for sure.
So excited to hear their new album tonight and see them live next year!
Good choice on the album as well!

Bro, I love your channel, and now that you're doing Poly whole album... it's over.
If you ever have time, Misplaced childhood, by Marillion is an amazing album. It all goes in, like nonagon infinity did. Gratz and keep it up!

Great so far! That last song was Yes-ish, reminded me of TV Eyes at the end!
Hell yeah, this is my favorite from them.
Anymore King Gizzard coming up? I'd recommend "infest the rats nest", "Murder of the Universe", "Ice, Death, Plants, Lungs, Mushrooms and lava"
Of course there’s more….. but need to space it out a bit!

Sounds to me like a real Hindi influence with a echo of Gentle Giant. Nice similar listen would be Alan Parsons project I Robot
Nice stuff. You really need to listen to omium gatherum. 18 minute banger on it.
Could you please react to anoxia by King gizzard? There are no reactions to it on youtube and its one of their most underrated tunes.
