Welcome back! You can't go wrong with Marillion. As you said before they don't try to out-compete each other. The whole really is greater than the sum of the parts.
I recall purchasing this when it was released. I found it such a departure from the Marillion I knew, and loved; that I pretty much ignored it for at least 10years on the basis that it seemed too 'pop' - I have subsequently learned to know better. Great album 🙂
I loved when the band performed “Hooks In You” at one of their weekends, Steve Hogarth introduced the song by declaring “We were young. It was the 80s!”
Great that you’ve revisited Marillion Jim, this was a stunning debut album for H. I was at the Rock Steady televised gig at DeMontfort, the first time seeing H… it was stunning… so refreshing from where they had been heading with Fish in my view :) More Marillion please :)
You’ve nailed it with the comment about it being a bridging album. Luckily they continued to move on into their own style and sound and have produced many stellar albums. The best of which, in my opinion, is Afraid of Sunlight. So I am joining the lobby demanding you include AOS on the channel (even if you wait another year to do so). I really hope we’ve not built your expectations about it up too much but it is such a special record. Hoping your little fella is on the mend.
Hey Jim. Sounded great on your system. I think you are right on the bridging. There was quite a lot of music carried over from the Clutching sessions and if you ever listen to Fish’s first solo album Vigil and the demos, you might notice some similar vibes here and there. Original CD version had the lovely After Me between Berlin and Hooks!
It would be great if you could do an abbreviated “Part 3” to listen to the three b-side/bonus tracks; “After Me”, “The Release”, and “The Bell In The Sea”. All three were worthy of being part of the main studio album. I believe that they will all be in the box set.
Hope the wee lad is doing better soon Jim! Meanwhile if you find the time to do a quick part 3 and hit the 3 b-sides from this album - as already mentioned below After Me (b-side of Hooks in You) is on the CD but not the vinyl, while The Bell in the Sea and The Release were entirely (and unjustly) non-album tracks. For my money not only should The Release have been on the album, it should have been the first h-era single...
Your look at the beginning of Hooks in you... priceless. I must have looked just as surprised 35 years ago. It was the first single, which I still think was a brave decision. Easter would have been the other choice. I was quite sceptical, but that changed after the first song on the album. Today I'm more of a fan than ever
Great review and I hope that perhaps people who perhaps lost touch with the band revisit this album as you have done with fresh ears. Hope your son feels better soon 😊
I remember buying this when it came out, almost wearing it out and then seeing the tour at Aston Villa Leisure Centre. I remember thinking “Hooks In You” was too brash compared to the other tracks and it stuck out a bit. I’m just not a big fan of shiny American style rock (like Van Halen etc) and I always rightly or wrongly put that track into that category. The Space is one heck of an album closer.
I don't think side two is as strong as one. I never got along with Holloway Girl and Hooks in You is enjoyable but throwaway. Berlin has aged well and The Space remains one of my favourite Marillion songs. The vocal is heroic and Hogarth's lyrics connect with me in a directly emotional way that Fish's more studied and intellectual approach couldn't quite manage. Leicester de Montfort was where the band recorded the Stoke Row to Ipanema live video, which is worth a look to see what those of us who witnessed Marillion on Hogarth's debut tour were able to see.
Additional request Can you please play my 2nd fave album by them next “Afraid of sunlight” and we watch your videos on smart tv so I don’t know if it’s different on cell phone apps but your Marillion playlist is filled with fish and it’s real mixed up could you please rearrange it for us put it in the order that the videos were made in? We have to keep scrolling up. And down to watch the order 🙏
Hi Jim I got the notification and I rushed home from school as soon as it ended to watch the video-it was torture waiting for the 2nd part 😢 Anyways you made a huge error why didn’t you play the version with the tracks missing ? After isn’t a Bside over here it’s part of the album left out due to vinyl being time restricted. Please play that and the b sides people on here will want the Bell in the Sea (think that’s its name?) I don’t like that song it seems rushed and incomplete but it’s cwl anyways thanks 🙏
Welcome back! You can't go wrong with Marillion. As you said before they don't try to out-compete each other. The whole really is greater than the sum of the parts.
Berlin stands out here. Fantastic track.
Very pleased you enjoyed this great album. It was the sound of its time, but what a sound!
Beautiful isn’t it?!
Brilliant Album!!
Absolutely love this album Jim, The Space is just glorious to listen to, and going to the RAH to hear this live was just sublime. 😎🍺👍
It’s Christmas time : there is a Marillion full album listen ! One day it will be Marbles turns 🎉 meanwhile I enjoyed this reaction a lot !
As much as I loved the Fish era, Steve Hogarth brought a whole new dimension to the band. Love this album ❤
Can never go wrong with Marillion, splendid band.

Same thing happened to me.
I loved when the band performed “Hooks In You” at one of their weekends, Steve Hogarth introduced the song by declaring “We were young. It was the 80s!”
Search TH-cam for the TotP appearance ! Not sure h can still do 'the jump' like he could then - not that I ever could, mind !

Thank you for sharing and playing this amazing Marillion album.
You should also check out “After Me”. Was omitted from vinyl releases but there on CD and cassette.
The Bell in the sea as B side was wrong. It had to be on the album. Much much better than Hollowgirl
… and The Space gave me one my most “goose-bumpy” live moments when they opened the 2nd half of their 1st Royal Albert show with it
Also “The Release”
@@matthewlewis9424 you right i forgot that song
And bell in the sea! My favorite!
Best wishes to you both. You for all the extra energy you need and for him to get better.
Last time I‘d heard „Berlin“ was at the conventions in 2022…and both Steve’s were so phenomenal..
And the sax was played from a local musician
Afraid Of Sunlight (1995) is another brilliant album - Marillion's 4th with h, and their 8th overall
My favorite album by Marillion
@@palantir135 Difficult to choose the next one to listen to as a first timer - possibly 'Brave' ?
@@mrb.5610 i have all the albums and of course listened to the all.
An hour before it’s dark, is another favorite album.
Man, what a feast.. Holloway Girl, Berlin and The Space...WOWOWOW... Love H and this album!
I am impressed this is the first time you are listening to this album!

The Bell In The Sea is fantastic.
There's a good live version of The Release on Out Of Season DVD, I think.
The Release is superb. Has some of my all time favourite lyrics on that one 👍
A departure from the Fish era but still utterly brilliant.
One of my favourites of the H era.

hooks in you was the first single with h, before the album was released
Love love that album. First masterpiece post Fish.
"After me" is missing, you really must listen to it.

The Space is one heck of an album closer.
I was at that show. I also saw Fish at the same venue, I think a short while later.
Whatever Is Wrong With You from Happiness Is The Road (2009?) is the same style as Hooks In You.
Great review mate!
Great reaction Jim! You'll hear some extra songs you didn't get on your standard release version. Perhaps a reaction to them...?
Then check the bell in the sea on the the luxe version.

Beautiful reaction as usual Jim... What do you think about giving the album Marbles a chance?
One of their best with h as vocalist. Might need 4 parts though lol.
IMHO Marbles is one of their strongest.
Hooked again Jim?
