Esca (Jamie Bell from Billy Elliot and King Kong) faces off a gladiator. However, instead of fighting, Esca just lets the gladiator punch him. The spectators are yelling “Kill him! Kill him!”. But Marcus (Channing Tatum from Dear John and Step Up) gets up and asks everyone to spare Esca’s life.

What’s the “The Eagle” movie about?
In 140 A.D., during the time of the Roman Empire, a young centurion, Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum from Dear John and Step Up), attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the Ninth Roman Legion, which occurred twenty years earlier and in which his father was commander of the 1st cohort. To this end, Aquila travels to northern Britain with a Celtic slave, Esca (Jamie Bell from Billy Elliot and King Kong), who owes him his life. Both venture beyond Hadrian's Wall to Caledonia, where they are confronted by Pictish tribes. Aquila is determined to find the emblem of the legion that disappeared in Pictish territory along with his father, the Roman eagle. During his journey, Aquila meets a local tribe, the "seal people", and becomes their prisoner. Thanks to Esca, who pretended to betray him in order to deceive the seal people, Marcus recovers the eagle and the two men flee. The "seal people" set out in pursuit. A last battle takes place, Marcus has the unexpected support of the survivors of the 9th legion and, in company of Esca who became his friend, he can bring back the eagle to Rome. He is then offered to re-found the legion.

For those wondering why many in the stands changed their minds after he said life, it's because he is a respected military officer and a hero among the Romans.
It can only happen in movies. All healthcare workers were once hailed as heroes. When flu season is approaching, you don’t fire skilled and experienced staff.
I think that many people didn't want him dead but was too scared of the crowd. When people saw that respected man publicly shout to let the slave live, they gained confidence to support him. It is always the most difficult to be the first to stand against the crowd.

Not a single day without some hard hitting reminder… that being said, the difference in scale between, say, watching Christians eaten by lions and prisoners beaten up during 60 days is simply our proximity with death which faded away. Give us some bloody wars, child mortality and wild animals encounters on a daily basis and we’ll revert to carnage binge watching anytime soon

There is no reason for American actors in Roman movies to fake an English accent.
In this one there is a reason for them to NOT speak British. Because they are Romans in Breton, and the Bretons are the "other" in this one. Them speaking British English here would be like if all the Roman characters spoke with a German accent, in a movie that is about them fighting Germanic people. It would look really stupid, and reveal the director as an idiot.

There will be 1 Person enough to turn that upside-down world to rise again in form of Great Hope and gives you the courage to overcome the impossibility in Life and those people who turn their back on you will recognize you again 1day no matter what the outcome & I had that 1 person in my life to support me, which I lost him recently(My FATHER). But no worries I have my MOTHER by my side to support and encourage my courage which my father bestows on me.

It's historically incorrect. They never showed a thumb up, instead, they hid their thumb inside their hand (symbolizing they hid the weapon) if they wanted the fighter to show mercy.

If it do, then this scene is different from the novel. Because in the novel, the slave which saved by Marcus is fighting so hard using a sword and shield. While his opponent using horse and a net.

I was in the theaters when this came out. During this scene I did a thumbs up (👍) and then everyone else started doing the same. When he was saved people started to stand up and cheer and I felt so good that I helped 😌. True story

But if my memory does not fail me, that scene is not in the book. I have to admit that I read the book when I was 12 or 13 yrs old. Which was back in the 70's ;-)
