    The part with the adult Stillwell kills me! You get the sense throughout the movie that his mother, Evelyn, was probably abused and this was their temporary respite from a miserable home life. Stillwell-angel was a rotten kid, but grew into a decent man who honored her legacy.

    Jon Lovitz (the scout) yelling at the cow wasn’t actually in the script. He broke character because the cows had been constantly mooing as they were filing those scenes (as they do lol) and just got pissed off and yelled at them. Penny Marshal and everyone else involved thought it was hilarious and not really ‘out of character’, so it made it in the movie.

    Love the ending. Did she let her sister win because her sister needed the win more than she did? Probably. But that's love. If Dottie wins, great but she destroys her sister and loses her forever. The baseball game is a microcosm of Kits whole life. If she loses, its life beating her down again, and how the person you love and admire can be a mirror to your own failings in comparison. You feel for both sisters.

    • @winter_s_44
      @winter_s_44 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      That is a question that has been asked, but I honestly don’t think so. I think they got to a point in their relationship where Dottie accepted to let Kit take the path she needed to take. I think this was emphasized by her telling Ellen Sue to pitch her high, fast ones. It would make no sense to tell her that and then let her win. But I think she was genuinely proud she could have her moment because she knew it was an authentic moment so it was a proud look of “finally,” not “look what I was able to give her.” I also think Dottie was too honorable to let her whole team down just to let her sister win. My take on it.

But than with grit & determination finally got a piece of it and when Dottie saw her coming home I think in her mind she decided to let it go and let Kit have her moment. Kit got a walkoff to help her team be the first world champions and a curtain call in the end with her name chanted.

I played softball for 10 years and i love every second of it, there was a period of time where i was playing for 3 different divisions at the same time so i was playing 3 games back to back every game day and i was also playing during school in the school league. I wish i never gave it up but I did initially to concentrate on school but i didn't return because of the long term damage i'd done to my rotator cuff which i didn't realise at the time of quitting. 4. If Kit hadn't pushed her to actually take advantage of that golden opportunity dangling in front of her, Dottie would never have had this experience of a lifetime! How grandly her ego was stroked as "The Queen of Diamonds", despite her false modesty. It gave her the chance to have SOMETHING in her life that was just hers! Something that had her rise to the occasion of being something other than someone's wife/daughter/mother! Yes, of course, Kit had just as much to gain from this. Without it, she'd just be stuck in that one-horse town as a tomboyish nobody; a pale imitation of her sister that no man would want and no league/organization (amateur or otherwise) would ever truly take seriously as a ballplayer!
    The fact still remains that this experience changed Dottie for the better; she could now, at the very least, be a woman of substance to her forthcoming family. She got a chance to meet other women just like her as an athlete, but from all different walks of life to gain perspective on how she should raise her own daughter(s). She got to be a part of something not only special with her sister, but historical for women of both past and present; a fact that didn't truly sink in for her until she finally reunited with her former teammates at the Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, seeing all the pix, plaques and paraphernalia laid out for the exhibits. Make no mistake, for the PROFESSIONAL athlete she was and the woman she became at the end of this film, she has her sister to thank entirely for it!

    Great review. You hit it on the head. I didn't like the sibling rivalry. Dottie let Kitt win to build her confidence. That wasn't fair to Dottie, her teammates, her coach or their fans. And it wasn't fair to Kitt either, not knowing she didn't really win, it was given to her. That doesn't make Kitt try harder. Also, I'm glad you noticed that the women knew they would be ripping their bodies if they did a slide into base. And they knew what they were in for when they did it, but they did it anyway. That takes guts. Also, you also got what the movie really meant for me - those special moments in life - lightning captured in a bottle. Those pictures taken of the team and you know, that at the time the picture was taken, it was such a minor moment for them. They were probably hot and sweaty and thinking about the game or dinner, but later in life, looking back on those pictures, they'll remember how magical that time of their lives was and they didn't even realize it.

    OK guys. So little sister Kit is played by Lori Petty, and I highly recommend checking her out in 'Tank Girl', and 'Point Break' )AKA Fast and the Furious V.1)

    Twin Brothers, mind u, it was the 1940s when the women who was the wife of the military had been played baseball. I cannot imagine how desperate not seeing the letters consistently. When Betty the Spaghetti cried, I cried too.

    I really feel like y'all are not appreciating the comedic genius of Jon Lovitz. He's one of the most underrated comedians. He uses sarcasm like Michelangelo used paint.

      That's the beauty of humor, it's totally subjective; while people like it and I respect that 100%. For me, it got a bit redundant and annoying; we all like what we like. :)

    Don't know if anybody else has posted about this, but Megan Cavanagh who played Marla Hooch, was actually a damned good ball-player and did all her own work blasting baseballs all over the place.

    Interesting fact: The injury Alice got while sliding into base was an actual injury. Not scripted. I heard most of the injuries shown were real, which is wild to think about. Thats a lot of dedication, though, and also some of the women from the actual team played some of the older characters, also. Loved this movie. Im not a sensitive guy....but definitely teared up at some scenes, lol

    Brothers, you are great. This is one of my favorite movies and your review is the best I've seen. Thanks for adding you well thought out understanding of the overall point of the movie and the characters. The women who were playing baseball at the reunion were some of the real women who had played in that league.

    Crazy fact, that wasn't Geena Davis in old makeup. That was Lynn Cartwright who was a gorgeous actress back in the day. Geena Davis voiced over her dialogue for it to match.
    Her sister's "kids" at the end, were in fact her grand-children. Think 40-50 years later...

    It’s been years since I’ve seen this movie so I didn’t remember that dedication at the end at all. After looking it up, it turns out that the uniforms were designed by Wrigley Company’s art director (also the art director for the Chicago Cubs), Wrigley’s wife, and the first player signed to the league. As someone that played baseball all throughout school, I had the exact same reaction pretty much everyone does when they see the uniforms. Girls or not, they make no sense for baseball. Kind of hard to argue with em when it’s a player that helps with its design though.
