This movie doesn't get enough credit for subverting the evil stepdad thing. Jerry is pretty objectively a better dad but when Jim Carrey wants to be there for Max, Jerry backs off.

I'd say you have it half-right; Jerry is objectively a better father figure when you compare them, but by himself, Jerry doesn't connect with Audrey nor Max. He's 100% sympathetic and honestly? It's sad and almost tragic what happens with him, because truly does care for and loves them, and you are 110% right that he doesn't get the credit he deserves for not only backing out/off, but he's happy for Max being happy with his father.

Jerry is the secret hero of this movie. Sure, he’s 50 on the inside and super-cringe, but he’s the guy who never cheats, pays for a step kid’s college, and always lets you pick the movie. His biggest sin is that he just tries too hard.

25 years ago everyone cheered for Fletcher without question. Now, people consider and discuss the value of Jerry and question whether the lesson Fletcher supposedly learned is likely to last past a week. People complain that everything is "too PC" these days but I think this movie is a good example of how it doesn't actually matter. We all can and still do laugh at a funny movie, but we are much better at not taking everything for face value, and at acknowledging that the fucked up values and lessons to be found in fictional media rarely transfer over well to real life. Seems like a much healthier and still happy existence to me.
Although side note, Cary Elwes hates Ted Cruz and Jim Carrey assisted Jenny McCarthy to light the fire to the anti-vax movement, so, yanno. Sometimes life does imitate art.

The thing about this movie that gets me the most isn't Jim Carrey as the manic comic that he is and always will be, but Cary Elwes playing the straight man. Elwes' comedic chops equal, and sometimes even rival Jim. The casting is perfect here. And Elwes also pulls through with an incredible American accent. And what makes it better is knowing that Kevin Costner had such an atrocious English accent in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves that Elwes referenced it in Robin Hood, Men in Tights. Quote: " And unlike some other Robin Hoods I can speak with an English Accent!"

The film is dedicated to Jason Bernard who played his last role as Judge Stevens in this film and shortly after died of a heart attack.
When Judge Stevens first walks in the courtroom and the guard says: "Please stand up to receive honorable Judge Marshall Stevens", Fletcher mocks the word "honorable". Since he was under the effect of the wish, he may know the judge is a corrupt one.
This is Jason Bernard's second appearance in a movie about a lawyer under the supernatural influence who ends up behaving like a maniac in court. The first was All of Me (1984) starring Steve Martin.

That's like this one but he's a con man and its based on a true story.
Also, it wasnt until I was an adult that I realized, that Samantha wouldnt get anything. She lied about her age to get married, making her 17 without parental consent and under CA law, as stated she could not go into a legally binding contrac like a marriage certificate, thus making the marriage null and void, but you know what else is a legally binding contract? A pre-nup. Which means that the prenup is double null and void since its a contract and it was signed to take effect post marriage, if the marriage is null and void so is the pre-nup which means all she gets its child support and thats for the kids.

AS IN MANY of his comedic roles, they let him go off script a little bit just to see where he goes with it. In past interviews with the rest of the cast they said it was so hard to work through the scenes. They said it was so hard to keep a straight face and not start laughing when he would just throw something into the scene. They all said they had a REALLY good time making this movie because of how goofy he was. Fun Fact... Because he's so good with impersonations he's not allowed to make ANY VOICES around his family's especially NOT Jack Nicholsons! It's a shame that he's left the industry, but many people do who are so typecast like he is. #NYGenXBIKERLady

Growing up means realising Jerry is the good guy. Fletcher only began to set his priorities straight after a day of literal magic. It’s implied he wasn’t a good dad even before the divorce, which attributed to the divorce

And there really is no explanation why. Jerry really is a good guy. He's not a villain in any sense whatsoever--actually everything that Fletcher really should be. So... why do we hate him so much? 😂

Jerry's claw is so wonderfully done. You just can't help but feel uncomfortable cringy.
Jerry was a wonderful guy, but he just didn't have the connection. No matter who you are or how wonderful you are, if the connection isn't there then there wil always be something feeling off (on both sides, Jerry knew himself as well that is why he stepped aside as easily)

For some very early Jim Carrey you should watch Earth Girls Are Easy (1988), it's a fun movie with a terrific cast.
For an excellent father & lawyer see the classic To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).

I'm old enough to have watched Jim Carey when he was on In Living Color, which aired at nearly midnight on the second of three channels we had in NZ at the time XD I saw this at the movies with friends, along with many of his other movies because back then any movie he put out was "must see". I think his humour is a bit dated now in these cynical and joyless times, so it's good to see someone enjoying his... zaniness... like it was the 90s.
