My Grandma played for the Jersey Queen during the AAL. For her 70th birthday. She got a signed photo from the real Kit and Dotty. In their Peaches uniforms when they were in the League.
My friend's mother was a Racine Belle. She absolutely LOVED this movie. She said that, even with "Hollywooding it up" it captured the feeling of the League and camaraderie of all of the players.

Only thing that kept me from going nuts was picturing the horror on people's faces if I pulled a Tom Hanks and just drilled a kid 😲🤣. Little known fact: The theme song "This Uses To Be My Playground" was recorded in one take, which is what was used in the film. It was Madonna's very first time recording with a full live orchestra. She did so inside an airplane hanger in Long Beach, Califonia. Apparently if you listen carefully with professional grade headphones, you can hear her turning the pages of sheet music that were next to her microphone stand. It's such a melancholic melody and song. Perfect for the movie.
I always get choked up when the credits start and that song comes in. Seeing these amazing women playing baseball, with this somewhat melancholic music just hits me in the feels.
My brother and I often repeat those lines and then get the giggles for the rest of the day. Classic Jon Lovitz. "Give the wife a little pickle tickle" is my other favorite. Then we invariably move into classic "Fish Called Wanda" lines.
The scene where the Black woman throws the ball to the players is a way to note the fact that the league was segregated. I actually met one of two women who played in the Negro League, Mamie "Peanut" Johnson before she passed away.
The Amazon Prime series “A League of Their Own” has her as a major character and focuses on the segregation of the time. A really good series that differs in tone quite a bit from the film
@@1220joeyjthe Amazon series was awful. The ratings and veiwership for the show were so bad that it was canceled after one season. I think even Amazon's terrible attempt to fan fic Tolkien with Rings of Power did better in the ratings. Amazon has some good shows, Reacher and the new Fallout, as well as some good original movies, but their purposely pushing the Woke agenda with League of Their Own failed. And yes they purposely did push the Wokeness on that show per the shows creator, and the show focused less on the baseball and the All American Girls Professional Baseball League and focused on lesbianism and segregation.

The Amazon series was terrible and as a girl who played fast pitch softball in high school and college and an avid baseball fan, i wanted to see a TV series about the womans baseball league but instead got a show pushing wokeness. Another scene that got me was having the black girl throw as hard or harder than a man. Sorry that is not going to happen. In high school we played against the boys team as a fund raiser event and even through it was slow pitch to make it fair, they killed us becuase even their worse players threw harder, hit harder, and ran faster then our best players could.
It's a line I repeat to myself all the time. I"m a writer, and whenever I'm stuck and want to give up on what I'm writing, I remind myself, "The hard is what makes it great."
My family went to Cooperstown in 2015 for the Hall of Fame induction, and the AAGPBL had a booth with several of the real ballplayers who appeared at the end of this movie. We got to spend a little time talking with them, and told them getting to meet them was our biggest thrill of the trip.
One of the players was an umpire in my little league back in the 80's. I remember hearing she used to play baseball but didn't think much of it at the time. She's in the background of the reunion scenes because they invited the players to be extras in the movie.
Geena Davis is amazing. She’s obviously a talented actress, but she’s also a genius and member of MENSA, she’s an Olympian, and women’s rights activist. And she’s beautiful to boot. She stays very busy.
MENSA does not make one a genius. I qualify for MENSA, but realize it doesn't mean anything. It's an arbitrary set of tests. And Geena never made the Olympics as Dmuzz pointed out. But she is a very talented actress.

There's not much to say about this gem that hasn't already been said, but this is the kind of film that Hollywood has forgotten how to make: a LEGITIMATELY empowering story with layered and endearing characters, a smart and funny script that doesn't feel the need to obnoxiously relay its message and talk down to the audience, and an all-around well made film that EVERYONE can enjoy!
TBR: "I don't think I could be a catcher, just squatting there all day." - Catchers have the shortest careers for that reason. It is HELL on the knees.

I'm talking little KIDS, and these knuckleheads act like they're coaching game 7 of the World Series. I had my own daughter move to SS and CF for that reason. She's got a cannon but was always the youngest/smallest on her teams. Worked out for the best.
Kyle Shwarber was a catcher for Cubs and now with the Phillies, plays a little 1st base and DH's sometimes because it taxes the body. Very few catchers like Yogi Berra, Johnny Bench and Ivan Rodriguez. The last 30 years, teams carry 2 often 3 catchers on the roster to keep them fresh. Tom Berenger in Major league was very spot on with the knee issues.
"Walter Harvey" was a fictional stand-in for Philip Wrigley (who took over Wrigley chewing gum from his father). Phillip also took over as majority owner of Wrigley Field, and was president of the Chicago Cubs. Wrigley was one of the 3 founders and backers of the AAGPBL. The league was mainly centered around Chicago and recruited from Midwestern states (4 teams in Illinois, 2 in Indiana, 4 in Michigan, 3 in Wisconsin, and 1 in Minnesota). The League lasted much longer than depicted. It started in 1943, peaked in 1948, and lasted through 1954. And MLB never really paused, Roosevelt made Major League Baseball an exception from the draft. The real issue was that the costs to run a national league went trough the roof because of gasoline rationing limited team travel. The World War 2 era did get a lot of criticism from women not being “lady like” and assuming roles outside the home. But it was an important turning point in the women’s liberation movement.
Over 500 MLB players enlisted, the majority of the league, pretty much only the over 35 guys were left and sub par talents scraped up from semi-pro teams. Minor leaguers were not exempt, so baseball took quite a hit during war time. Ted Williams and Yogi Berra in particular went above and beyond, but all the stars of the game joined the effort.

William Wrigley Jr (Philip’s father) acquired the Chicago Whales, which over a number of years and name changes became the Cubs. The stadium was also owned by the team (which was normal back then, but not common today). It eventually was renamed Wrigley Field. It is the second oldest baseball stadium in the United States and is now a protected historical landmark (Fenway with the Boston Red Sox is the oldest).

When you said "new player" in regards to the black lady that threw the ball hard, I broke down a bit. In 1943, there were still segregated leagues. She wouldn't have had a chance to come aboard no matter how good she was at that point in history. The color barrier did once get broken by Moses Fleetwood Walker in 1884, but, it wasn't officially broken until April 15, 1947 when Jackie Robinson did it. She was 4 years too early, and even when Jackie did break the color barrier it took YEARS for minorities to get more involved in the MLB, and the Woman's League was all but gone by the time the men came back from WWII. It lasted until 1954, but wasn't anywhere near popular enough to expand, or be maintained for much longer after 1945.
Penny Marshall also directed 'Big', which I think they have reacted to, and the guy in this movie who hired Tom Hanks' character is her brother Garry Marshall.

Penny Marshall is a master of telling warm-feeling true story-based stories. Awakenings is probably her masterpiece, in my opinion. On a side note, it was nice to see her bring in her Happy Days & Laverne & Shirley castmates in. Squizzy was there as a game-caller, and Carmine Ragoo was one of the dancers that Madonna was jiving with.

@@laudanum669 No, I wasn’t aware of that, but I loved Lenny and Squiggy and they both always looked like they loved their roles. It takes a very good actor to do that sort of ‘dumb character’ comedy well. Michael went on to do all sorts of great stuff including David St Hubbins, of course, but I really liked him in Better Caul Saul (in fact he was the highlight of the show for me).
My High School Principal (RIP), 30+ years ago, yes I'm old....she was a member of the league...not casted in the film, but played in the league and has her name mentioned in the HOF. Sadly, I did not know of this until years later when the movie came out and I went to the HOF and saw her name amongst the members. She never spoke of it. I wish I knew though while in HS cause I'm a huge baseball fan.
I forgot how much I love this movie. Glad y'all liked it! Gina Davis' voice was dubbed over an older actress portraying the elder Dottie. Penny Marshall (director) did not like the artificial look of aging a young actor. Plus the age gap was at least 40 years so there was no way to make it believable. Great casting of older versions of the characters. They provided just enough clues to who the older characters were through the dialogue and personality that you soon realize who they are. We as the audience feel that joy & nostalgia of realizing who someone is after not seeing them for 40+ years.

I have a closer connection to this movie. I'm from Rockford and used to go by the old stadium every day. And then the city announced they were tearing it down. It was a sad day for sports fans with so much history. But times move on and we have this movie to help remember.
Luckily in my town we still have the field they filmed some of the scenes from here. I love seeing those scenes and I recognize the buildings and the stands. Fun times.
Beyer Stadium was torn down, and the Clock Tower was torn down, but that hideous Symbol sculpture on the Rock River remains. Truly a Rockford experience. I vote we bring back Media Play. It was the best place to shop for movies, music, and games after eating some Beef-A-Roo cheddar fries. 👍

The reason it was different when Ryan's mom (Saving Private Ryan) was notified that she lost three of her sons was because, if the military knew that soldiers/sons of the same house or family had been killed, the army would send an officer to accompany the letters and deliver the news. Instead of sending just the telegrams, an army officer and chaplain went to inform Mrs. Ryan of her sons. Seeing the telegram or that car come your way is still a really sad and moment of dread.

The league was not just "post WW2". The league started during WW2 (as shown in the movie) in 1943 and kept going until 1954. WW2 for the USA was 1941-1945.
Im pretty sure the VHS copy I had came with a documentary straight after showing the real people and the real lives it was based upon including the sisters Helen & Margaret Candaele and Dorothy Kamenshek to name three important ball-players in American Baseball history 😊⚾🎉
Running over/thru the catcher so they drop the ball used to be a strategy but with all the injuries and the awareness of player safety coming about the last few years it has pretty much become against the rules in the MLB. There is a longer explanation but that is the gist of it. Back when this movie came out, I probably watched it a dozen times, it was just so good. Fun fact: When John Lovitz yells at the cow for mooing "Will you shut up!" was improvised. It makes me chuckle every time.

The older Kit and Dottie were older actresses who resembled them. The voices were dubbed. Penny Marshall required all the Actresses in the movie to be able to play baseball. BTW - that was a real Bruise on the thigh of the Actress. During the Closing Credits you can actually see the real players of the Girls Baseball League.

Oh I loved when this movie came out I was working at the movie theater and it was such a big deal with all the actresses that were in this film. I talked to my grandfather about the women's league when he came back from the war he saw how hard those women played he said they were amazing.
This movie is great. I will say the ending does represent a lot of people from those older generations. My dad is 66 and was born in 57. Obviously this was prior to him but my point being that when my dad graduated high school everyone went their own seperate ways. Zero social media and cell phones etc to connect people. If you didn’t stay in the same area or have some type of address or number you lost touch with all of these people. My dad still to this day is still seeing people from his childhood on Facebook that he hasn’t seen in 40 years. We really don’t realize how much social media/internet has changed our lives
Geena Davis was in Thelma and Louise, Quick Change, Beetlejuice, and Speechles, all worth checking out. The other movies including her "b" movie Earth Girls Are Easy (which was always on cable), not so much. Madonna was also in Visionquest which starred Mathew Modine who was the cop in The Dark Knight Rises. Speaking of Matthew Modine, he starred in an excellent HBO movie called And The Band Played On which chronicles the early days of the AIDS epidemic and should be watched either on your own or for the channel.
I first saw As The Band Played On when I was a teenager and read the book as well. It made me mad that those that was allowed to die because of their orientation very sad. It made me learn as much as I could about the disease and those who died. Ronald Reagan was a bigot he didn’t even want to help work on a vaccine or anything to help those who became ill and die.Such a sad time in history.😢
I only watched this movie when it came out because of Madonna, but it became one of my favourite movies for a whole lot of other reasons as you guys have listed. Everytime I rewatch it I get the FEELS 😭🤗🥰 Wonderful performances all round with the bonus of Madonna's song This Used To be my Playground in the credits with footage of the actual league players just gets me misty eyed!
I adore this movie. One of my favorite alumni from my university played in the real league while she was in college. Before she passed, she donated a lot of memorabilia to our library archives. I would chat with her at every homecoming and even in her late age she was a spitfire!
Tom Hanks early films are hilarious. Bachelor party, Joe vs. The volcano, Splash, Volunteers, The burbs, The money pit, Dragnet. He didn't make a serious movie until the 90s.

They don't charge the catcher anymore for safety issues. But you used to be able to blast the catcher as hard as you wanted to knock the ball losses. If you did that and touched home plate, you were safe.
The ball drop debate has gone on since the 1992.... some believe Dottie dropped it on purpose, some believe it was truly an accident.... no way to know for sure.
It's deliberately vague. But, I think the stronger argument is that it was an accident. Dottie told Ellen (the pitcher) to throw high fastballs which Kit had a hard time hitting or laying off of. Dottie was playing to win.
If Dottie dropped the ball on purpose, that makes her a liar and Kit a phony. It would be a terrible ending. Dottie wanted to win just as much as Kit did (even if she wouldn't admit it, even to herself). She wouldn't betray her teammates just to give Kit a fake victory out of pity. She's proud of Kit at the end because she legitimately won, fair and square.

What a great movie! My personal favorite line is "Can't we do both?" I'm pretty sure the older Dottie and older Kit were played by different people. According to Google Lynn Cartwright played Dottie and Kathleen Butler played older Kit. Also according to IMDb some of the extras at the end were actually members of the original league.
Debra Winger was originally cast as Dottie Hinson, and even trained for three months with the Chicago Cubs as preparation for her role. But when Winger heard that Madonna had also been cast in the film, she decided to leave the production, criticizing director Penny Marshall for making an "Elvis film." Winger still got paid for the film even though she wasn't in it, but when asked in an interview if Madonna's casting was the reason for her leaving the production, Winger said, “I think [her] acting career has spoken for itself.”
That's the story she gave publicly, but there were other things she wanted changed within the movie, that Penny said no to; Penny was replaced on "When Peggy Sue got Married" in 1985 because of Debra, who had been cast as the lead, and wanted changes. Debra complained about Geena Davis's performance as well. She's just bitter.

Penny Marshall replaced Demme, but had creative differences with the writers and left the project, and Winger left the movie out of loyalty to Marshall.
This is one of my favoite movies....glad yall reacted to this one, brings back a lot of memories. This was one of the few movies that made me tear up, several times, and all were amazing actors. Interesting note, the one that played Betty Spaghetti is the daughter of the film`s producer, 'Penny Marshall', who played Lavern on Lavern N Shirley, which is a classic. But, this was an all-around great movie....and loved the reaction
This is just a classic. I loved watching this with my grandmother. It was one of her favorites. Another movie I watched with her a lot was Fried Green Tomatoes. I hope y’all react to that someday.
This film is one of my favorites. Most of it was filmed in Southern Indiana. As a kid, I grew up in the city where the Racine Belle’s home stadium was and was an extra during the filming at age 12. I now live where the Peaches home stadium is and go to games there every summer. They have kept most of the signage and the stadium as just as pristine as when the movie was filmed!

There are a number of tie ins to the show "Laverne and Shirley" in this movie. First and foremost is that it was directed by Penny "Laverne" Marshall. David L "Squiggy" Lander played the ballpark announcer in the film, and Eddie Mekka who played Carmine "The Big Ragu" Ragusta on the show was the Army corporal with all the moves on the dance floor in the film.
Great reaction, guys! I hate how overlooked and underrated this film was at the Oscars. It should have been nominated for Best Movie, Best Director (Penny Marshall), Best Actress (Geena Davis), Best Supporting Actor (Tom Hanks), Best Original Song (Madonna) etc.
The climatic ball game was shot at Bosse Field, which is currently the 3rd oldest baseball stadium in the United States (Behind Fenway and Wrigley) It still functions as a minor league field to this day.
What's crazy is that I enjoy college softball so much more than baseball. The energy, pacing and everything else. It's really blown up in the last so many years. I know they were playing baseball in the movie, but it's so cool to see the evolution over the years.

The scene where the Black woman throws the ball to the players is a way to note the fact that the league was segregated. I actually met one of two women who played in the Negro League, Mamie "Peanut" Johnson before she passed away.
The Amazon Prime series “A League of Their Own” has her as a major character and focuses on the segregation of the time. A really good series that differs in tone quite a bit from the film

Amazon has some good shows, Reacher and the new Fallout, as well as some good original movies, but their purposely pushing the Woke agenda with League of Their Own failed. And yes they purposely did push the Wokeness on that show per the shows creator, and the show focused less on the baseball and the All American Girls Professional Baseball League and focused on lesbianism and segregation.

In high school we played against the boys team as a fund raiser event and even through it was slow pitch to make it fair, they killed us becuase even their worse players threw harder, hit harder, and ran faster then our best players could.

My family went to Cooperstown in 2015 for the Hall of Fame induction, and the AAGPBL had a booth with several of the real ballplayers who appeared at the end of this movie. We got to spend a little time talking with them, and told them getting to meet them was our biggest thrill of the trip.
One of the players was an umpire in my little league back in the 80's. I remember hearing she used to play baseball but didn't think much of it at the time. She's in the background of the reunion scenes because they invited the players to be extras in the movie.
Geena Davis is amazing. She’s obviously a talented actress, but she’s also a genius and member of MENSA, she’s an Olympian, and women’s rights activist. And she’s beautiful to boot. She stays very busy.
She's also my favorite Earth Girl.

I'm talking little KIDS, and these knuckleheads act like they're coaching game 7 of the World Series. I had my own daughter move to SS and CF for that reason. She's got a cannon but was always the youngest/smallest on her teams. Worked out for the best.
Kyle Shwarber was a catcher for Cubs and now with the Phillies, plays a little 1st base and DH's sometimes because it taxes the body. Very few catchers like Yogi Berra, Johnny Bench and Ivan Rodriguez. The last 30 years, teams carry 2 often 3 catchers on the roster to keep them fresh. Tom Berenger in Major league was very spot on with the knee issues.

"Walter Harvey" was a fictional stand-in for Philip Wrigley (who took over Wrigley chewing gum from his father). Phillip also took over as majority owner of Wrigley Field, and was president of the Chicago Cubs. Wrigley was one of the 3 founders and backers of the AAGPBL. The league was mainly centered around Chicago and recruited from Midwestern states (4 teams in Illinois, 2 in Indiana, 4 in Michigan, 3 in Wisconsin, and 1 in Minnesota).
The League lasted much longer than depicted. It started in 1943, peaked in 1948, and lasted through 1954. And MLB never really paused, Roosevelt made Major League Baseball an exception from the draft. The real issue was that the costs to run a national league went trough the roof because of gasoline rationing limited team travel.
The World War 2 era did get a lot of criticism from women not being “lady like” and assuming roles outside the home. But it was an important turning point in the women’s liberation movement.
Over 500 MLB players enlisted, the majority of the league, pretty much only the over 35 guys were left and sub par talents scraped up from semi-pro teams. Minor leaguers were not exempt, so baseball took quite a hit during war time. Ted Williams and Yogi Berra in particular went above and beyond, but all the stars of the game joined the effort.

William Wrigley Jr (Philip’s father) acquired the Chicago Whales, which over a number of years and name changes became the Cubs. The stadium was also owned by the team (which was normal back then, but not common today). It eventually was renamed Wrigley Field. It is the second oldest baseball stadium in the United States and is now a protected historical landmark (Fenway with the Boston Red Sox is the oldest).

When you said "new player" in regards to the black lady that threw the ball hard, I broke down a bit. In 1943, there were still segregated leagues. She wouldn't have had a chance to come aboard no matter how good she was at that point in history. The color barrier did once get broken by Moses Fleetwood Walker in 1884, but, it wasn't officially broken until April 15, 1947 when Jackie Robinson did it. She was 4 years too early, and even when Jackie did break the color barrier it took YEARS for minorities to get more involved in the MLB, and the Woman's League was all but gone by the time the men came back from WWII. It lasted until 1954, but wasn't anywhere near popular enough to expand, or be maintained for much longer after 1945.
Penny Marshall had a great run in the late '80s-early '90s. You'd also like 1990's _Awakenings_ with DeNiro & Robin Williams. Highly recommended.
Penny Marshall also directed 'Big', which I think they have reacted to, and the guy in this movie who hired Tom Hanks' character is her brother Garry Marshall.

My High School Principal (RIP), 30+ years ago, yes I'm old....she was a member of the league...not casted in the film, but played in the league and has her name mentioned in the HOF. Sadly, I did not know of this until years later when the movie came out and I went to the HOF and saw her name amongst the members. She never spoke of it. I wish I knew though while in HS cause I'm a huge baseball fan.

Gina Davis' voice was dubbed over an older actress portraying the elder Dottie. Penny Marshall (director) did not like the artificial look of aging a young actor. Plus the age gap was at least 40 years so there was no way to make it believable. Great casting of older versions of the characters. They provided just enough clues to who the older characters were through the dialogue and personality that you soon realize who they are. We as the audience feel that joy & nostalgia of realizing who someone is after not seeing them for 40+ years.

I have a closer connection to this movie. I'm from Rockford and used to go by the old stadium every day. And then the city announced they were tearing it down. It was a sad day for sports fans with so much history. But times move on and we have this movie to help remember.
Luckily in my town we still have the field they filmed some of the scenes from here. I love seeing those scenes and I recognize the buildings and the stands. Fun times.
Beyer Stadium was torn down, and the Clock Tower was torn down, but that hideous Symbol sculpture on the Rock River remains. Truly a Rockford experience. I vote we bring back Media Play. It was the best place to shop for movies, music, and games after eating some Beef-A-Roo cheddar fries. 👍

The reason it was different when Ryan's mom (Saving Private Ryan) was notified that she lost three of her sons was because, if the military knew that soldiers/sons of the same house or family had been killed, the army would send an officer to accompany the letters and deliver the news. Instead of sending just the telegrams, an army officer and chaplain went to inform Mrs. Ryan of her sons.
Seeing the telegram or that car come your way is still a really sad and moment of dread.

I used to run a hardware store, and one of my older female customers had played for one of the teams in the league.
Running over/thru the catcher so they drop the ball used to be a strategy but with all the injuries and the awareness of player safety coming about the last few years it has pretty much become against the rules in the MLB. There is a longer explanation but that is the gist of it. Back when this movie came out, I probably watched it a dozen times, it was just so good. Fun fact: When John Lovitz yells at the cow for mooing "Will you shut up!" was improvised. It makes me chuckle every time.

The older Kit and Dottie were older actresses who resembled them. The voices were dubbed. Penny Marshall required all the Actresses in the movie to be able to play baseball. BTW - that was a real Bruise on the thigh of the Actress. During the Closing Credits you can actually see the real players of the Girls Baseball League.

Oh I loved when this movie came out I was working at the movie theater and it was such a big deal with all the actresses that were in this film. I talked to my grandfather about the women's league when he came back from the war he saw how hard those women played he said they were amazing.

This movie is great. I will say the ending does represent a lot of people from those older generations. My dad is 66 and was born in 57. Obviously this was prior to him but my point being that when my dad graduated high school everyone went their own seperate ways. Zero social media and cell phones etc to connect people. If you didn’t stay in the same area or have some type of address or number you lost touch with all of these people. My dad still to this day is still seeing people from his childhood on Facebook that he hasn’t seen in 40 years. We really don’t realize how much social media/internet has changed our lives

This is one of the movies I always stop to watch. It makes you laugh and cry.
Geena Davis was in Thelma and Louise, Quick Change, Beetlejuice, and Speechles, all worth checking out. The other movies including her "b" movie Earth Girls Are Easy (which was always on cable), not so much. Madonna was also in Visionquest which starred Mathew Modine who was the cop in The Dark Knight Rises. Speaking of Matthew Modine, he starred in an excellent HBO movie called And The Band Played On which chronicles the early days of the AIDS epidemic and should be watched either on your own or for the channel.
I first saw As The Band Played On when I was a teenager and read the book as well. It made me mad that those that was allowed to die because of their orientation very sad. It made me learn as much as I could about the disease and those who died. Ronald Reagan was a bigot he didn’t even want to help work on a vaccine or anything to help those who became ill and die.Such a sad time in history.😢

I only watched this movie when it came out because of Madonna, but it became one of my favourite movies for a whole lot of other reasons as you guys have listed. Everytime I rewatch it I get the FEELS 😭🤗🥰 Wonderful performances all round with the bonus of Madonna's song This Used To be my Playground in the credits with footage of the actual league players just gets me misty eyed!
I adore this movie. One of my favorite alumni from my university played in the real league while she was in college. Before she passed, she donated a lot of memorabilia to our library archives. I would chat with her at every homecoming and even in her late age she was a spitfire!

They don't charge the catcher anymore for safety issues. But you used to be able to blast the catcher as hard as you wanted to knock the ball losses. If you did that and touched home plate, you were safe.

The ball drop debate has gone on since the 1992.... some believe Dottie dropped it on purpose, some believe it was truly an accident.... no way to know for sure.
It's deliberately vague. But, I think the stronger argument is that it was an accident. Dottie told Ellen (the pitcher) to throw high fastballs which Kit had a hard time hitting or laying off of.
Dottie was playing to win.
If Dottie dropped the ball on purpose, that makes her a liar and Kit a phony. It would be a terrible ending.
Dottie wanted to win just as much as Kit did (even if she wouldn't admit it, even to herself). She wouldn't betray her teammates just to give Kit a fake victory out of pity. She's proud of Kit at the end because she legitimately won, fair and square.

Debra Winger was originally cast as Dottie Hinson, and even trained for three months with the Chicago Cubs as preparation for her role. But when Winger heard that Madonna had also been cast in the film, she decided to leave the production, criticizing director Penny Marshall for making an "Elvis film." Winger still got paid for the film even though she wasn't in it, but when asked in an interview if Madonna's casting was the reason for her leaving the production, Winger said, “I think [her] acting career has spoken for itself.”

That's the story she gave publicly, but there were other things she wanted changed within the movie, that Penny said no to; Penny was replaced on "When Peggy Sue got Married" in 1985 because of Debra, who had been cast as the lead, and wanted changes. Debra complained about Geena Davis's performance as well. She's just bitter.

Penny Marshall replaced Demme, but had creative differences with the writers and left the project, and Winger left the movie out of loyalty to Marshall.

This film is one of my favorites. Most of it was filmed in Southern Indiana. As a kid, I grew up in the city where the Racine Belle’s home stadium was and was an extra during the filming at age 12. I now live where the Peaches home stadium is and go to games there every summer. They have kept most of the signage and the stadium as just as pristine as when the movie was filmed!

There are a number of tie ins to the show "Laverne and Shirley" in this movie. First and foremost is that it was directed by Penny "Laverne" Marshall. David L "Squiggy" Lander played the ballpark announcer in the film, and Eddie Mekka who played Carmine "The Big Ragu" Ragusta on the show was the Army corporal with all the moves on the dance floor in the film.

Great reaction, guys! I hate how overlooked and underrated this film was at the Oscars. It should have been nominated for Best Movie, Best Director (Penny Marshall), Best Actress (Geena Davis), Best Supporting Actor (Tom Hanks), Best Original Song (Madonna) etc.
The climatic ball game was shot at Bosse Field, which is currently the 3rd oldest baseball stadium in the United States (Behind Fenway and Wrigley) It still functions as a minor league field to this day.
I remember seeing the split fowl ball catch cover on Time Magazine.

What's crazy is that I enjoy college softball so much more than baseball. The energy, pacing and everything else. It's really blown up in the last so many years. I know they were playing baseball in the movie, but it's so cool to see the evolution over the years.
This might be my favorite sports movie of all time. The story is so simple but so well done. Masterfully done all round.

Wow. "This Madonna person can dance." ouch - I just aged 10 years. Geena had a small role in my favorite movie, Tootsie, AND Fletch (with Chevy Chase) - I hope they are on your radar. Thelma and Louise is another great one. PS old Dotty was an actress with Geena's voice over dialogue.
