Welcome to Episode 8 of Madness! We're trying to decide not only what are the best N64 games, but which is THE best game on the Nintendo 64. In this episode it's Majora's Mask vs Paper Mario vs Star Fox 64, but who will win?

I mean Star Fox is a fantastic game in its own right, and I am actually surprised as I thought he and Jared would vote for it after the arguments they made. Paper Mario is a great game also. But of the three Majora's Mask is the best.

I'll have to agree with Jared on that one, what is my only nitpick about Majora's Mask is that characters who have just been recycled from Ocarina of Time are not the same characters as in Ocarina of Time, they don't have the same personality, the same story. They're different characters with the same appearance and that annoys me. It's like Sonic and the Black Knight, or Secret Rings. They could've made new character designs, but stuck with the well known sonic characters designs for characters who are completely different. That's what makes it look like Majora's Mask might've been too rushed.
@@erikasakura7721 The reason why they had to use the same characters was nkt because they were lazy, it was because of the one year deadline Nintendo put on the devolopment of the GAME. MM was supposed to be a remake of OOT for the Disc Drive, but Eiji Aunoma felt this wasn't right and when he told bout his problems, nintendo told that he would be able to make a new game, but he would have to make it within a year. Watch the DYKG episode of MM.

I sort of get what they mean, and they're doing it for the sake of being objective. Unfortunately, it's not only a bad way to put it, but it's also not the best way to judge a game. You should just judge the games as they are not 'as N64 games' but as games in general.

It HAS to be by "as a N64" that is the whole premise. If you try to define it as a general game goldeneye would be considered shit even though it is an impactful game.
Also the gang tends to refer back to "which is a better game in general" but keep pushing the "better N64 standpoint" that's why this loser bracket has majora, starfox, etc. despite being legendary games.

9:30 Music degree here: Majora's Mask is the best
Its music is not only far more diverse than PM or SF, but it utilizes and evolves its themes more adeptly. The Song of Healing *(which I did a screamy cover of because I love it so much)* is one of the most beautiful, useful themes in a video game. It shows up in different situations throughout the game, but always manages to fit with what's going on, and conveys (somehow) longing, sadness, and hope all at once.
It, like OoT, uses 5 notes mapped to the N64 controller to involve the player in the game's music instead of just having it be passive in the background. I really wish Zelda games would bring that interactivity back.
And just think of how many different genres are represented here! The Jungle Cruise, Woodfall, the Deku Palace, Clock Town, the Gerudo Fortress, etc. Koji Kondo absolutely killed it with this game.
Star Fox is good, but limited and samey. Paper Mario is great, but doesn't have anywhere near the range of MM.

I love MM but I gotta disagree here. Compared to other N64 games and other Zelda games, MM's music just isn't hummable or memorable like some of Nintendo's best. Yes, the ocarina songs are easy to remember because you have to in order to use them, but I've 100% completed that game probably a dozen times and I can't hum you anything from the 4 main dungeons or their surrounding areas (excluding stone tower).
@@WeeklyMusicalShitposts while "hummability" is definitely nice, Majora's Mask crafts an _atmosphere_ with music instead of just catchy melodies. But those melodies are still there, you just may not remember them personally ;)
For the past 18 years, I've been humming The Deku Palace, Stone Tower, Clock Town, The Milk Bar, Song of Healing, Oath to Order, Elegy of Emptiness, Jungle Cruise, and even the Snowhead Temple theme.

I think the argument against MM about it not being as popular back during the N64 days could be used against Paper Mario. When the 64 was in its heyday people were talking about Goldeneye, Zelda, Star Fox, Mario 64, etc. I never heard anyone say a thing about Paper Mario.

Paper Mario also came out right near the console's death, so by that time most people had already moved on from the 64 to other things. It wasn't the game's fault, it was simply bad timing.

Which just totally destroys his credibility. Yes, it reuses the character models and non-boss enemies and a lot of the objects, but the game's structure, plot, characters and tone are all different from Ocarina... Twilight Princess is a lot closer to being a rehash of Ocarina than Majora is...

The tension throughout this entire video was building to the last moment when I fell in love in with Furst for his vote.
I was so rooting for majoras mask and when it seemed like Austin was the only one going for it I thought all hope was lost! But even with Austin’s poor defending majoras mask still won and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time

I don't like the way that they bring up the expansion pack as a potential downside for Majora's Mask. It shouldn't even be considered, because that's an external circumstance. Whatever you need to play the game doesn't matter because they should only focus on the game itself. The story, the characters, the world, the music, the gameplay itself, etc.
The required add-on shouldn't be counted as a minus for the experience of the game.
Also, they shouldn't have counted the length of time it took a game to become popular, because again, that doesn't change the game itself.

For the record- and the comments are probably gonna slam me for this- but IMHO.... I prefer Star Fox Assault to 64 generally. I dunno, the game play feels better to me there- even if I don't care for the on foot segments as much- and the visuals and soundtrack are just nicer all around. :)

Right there with you. I'm not sure it's a BETTER game, but it's more interesting and was a good stepping stone for the series, rough and unbalanced as it was. Being able to swap between foot, Arwing, and Landmaster as needed for the situation was a brilliant idea Nintendo did nothing with. Hone that and combine it with the ability to change characters like in Command, and I think you'd have a far superior StarFox game to anything that came before.
Assault is criminally underrated.
THIS: I want this so hard now that you bring up the idea. Being able to switch between playstyles on the fly and characters over the course of an adventure? That sounds so exciting, and a great way to make something actually better than 64 :)
And yes, I'm with you regarding your former point: I think objectively 64 is the better game, but subjectively Assault just is more interesting and enjoyable.
...Which is weird; 64 was the first video game I remember ever playing, so it's odd to me that I'm not as fond nostalgic about that as some others are.
StarFox is a series full of unexplored or poorly executed good ideas.
I want to know what happened with Cerinia and why Krystal has telepathic powers. I want to know how magic and technology would coexist in this sci-fi universe (since Sauria very clearly has magic, and apparently so did Cerinia). I'd love to see how Wolf and Fox got to know each other or why Pigma betrayed James and Peppy (and if there was another team member who maybe didn't make it since StarFox typically has four members). Would've loved to see what led Andross to his madness in a non-Zero way. And that's just story stuff.
I'd also love to see more team-based gameplay since the game is named after the team, not Fox McCloud. Command and 2 did okay with that, but I'd like to see that kind of thing done in the middle of missions, combining an RTS format and Arwing piloting, or maybe a Musou format where you can tactically change your character on the fly to protect or take key areas.
Like, there's so much they can do with the series that they just haven't done because "Muh 64." XD
I think that's what I love and hate about Star Fox. It has so much potential gameplay and narratively; this is a character based sci-fi setting with fantasy elements as well as futuristic technology. I've enjoyed what they've done.... but it's capable of so much more! I like 64, but the series has so much potential to grow if they actually change things up: Metroid is a good example of doing this with Prime and it working out :)
I've been in the Paper Mario camp the whole way, and I'm sad to see it defeated. However, I respect the victors. This was definitely a rough round. Frankly, if someone new hears about Paper Mario and decides to try it out, that's another chance for someone to fall in love with it, so it's a win in the long run.

This is a great series, but I have some suggestions to make it even better in the future:
1) Number the episodes. It would make it easier to know which one I’m on if it’s more organized.
2) Set some ground rules. As mentioned by commenters from this series, the way games were judged upon was inconsistent. Is this tournament about being the better game, or the better N64 game? Games have advanced for both of these reasons when it should be one or the other.

Also, I have a degree in music, and some of my favourite video game music came from Majora's Mask. The Astral Observatory theme was my alarm tone for years (now it's the fairy fountain), and the Great Bay temple has a severely underrated theme.
One last thing to get off my chest... They keep talking and emphasising "Which is the better *N64* game?!" and then they talk about marketing and external hardware like rumble packs... I'm sorry, but to me, that doesn't have anything to do with how good the game itself is 🙄

Maaaaan I was so hoping Paper Mario would get it's time in the lime-light but I knew it was up against tough competition. This was a really interesting one because Majora's Mask had something the other two games didn't: Emotional impact, so while Paper Mario was the most original and aged the best, and Star Fox was the most impactful and nostalgic, Majora's Mask won by making a more emotional impression. Great video, great games, great lineup.

Since I have a music degree and you've asked us to weigh in, I have to mention that I learned to recognize the sound of multiple scales from their use in the N64 Zelda games. Using Saria's Song to identify Lydian got me through my 1st year ear training classes. Fun fact: the Ocarina of Time is tuned to a Dm6 chord.

Am I that far off base in thinking that Star Fox 64 is hands down the most iconic game here? These guys ALL at one point made the argument that this tourney is for the "best N64 game," not just the best game. Star Fox 64 is the most iconic game of its franchise. Thousand Year Door is easily the tops for Paper Mario, and Majora's Mask just doesn't hold up as well as these other two. All good games, but PM and MM earned cult status a bit later...SF64 helped define the N64.

I think Majora's Mask was only less iconic because it was in the shadow of Ocarina of Time. It was a personal emotional journey of the town vs. the epic hero's journey across time, and the second best Zelda game can easily still be one of the best games on the platform. StarFox 64 is only the best game in the series because they never tried to do anything else (besides command/assault which were poorly planned and marketed).
Actually, you're not wrong. I never even played Starfox 64 and despite loving MM, I think I would have to agree that it was the better N64 game. Paper Mario is good, but I think Thousand Year Door one-ups it in every way.

These are some of THE BEST N64 games.

I never got into Starfox and it DEFINITELY should not beat Majora or Paper Mario.
Nobody I knew even knew who Fox was.
Ocarina of Time beat MM, Goldeneye beat Paper Mario, Banjo Kazooie beat Starfox 64, Super Mario 64 beat Mario kart 64, Pokemon Snap beat Diddy Kong Racing (really confused on that one), and Mario Party 2 beat Smash Bros (also confused).
All 12 games that started are contenders for "best N64 game". Of the 6 I've played, (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooie, Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64), the only one I'd argue might not belong there is Banjo Kazooie - I think Tooie is a better game (having replayed them both on my N64 in the last couple of months) - it's the second half of the game, and, while it's not perfect, it builds on the first half well, and just plain not having to get all 100 notes in a level in one go is a huge improvement right there...
rmsgrey - Couldn't the same argument be said about Majora's Mask? I personally liked Banjo Kazooie better and OoT better. That's just me. Also, you never played Starfox or Smash?!

In my opinion the impact of the game is overall irrelevant to the debate of which is the better n64 game.
impact is definitively a big point more impact means better game. if it influences other people to make a game to that caliber then it shows its a good game.
then what is relevant? StarFox was probably the most graphically advanced for its time of the 3. It also has more memorable sound design than Majoras Mask (considering most of it was just ripped from OoT so its not really its own design) and most Mario games in general have similar sound design. Gameplay holds up better too because Paper Mario is super easy and Majoras Mask is confusing and frustrating. Also keep in mind Paper Mario and Majora's Mask both didn't come out until 2000, when everyone was switching over to PS2.
@@PlayPodOG i wouldn't say that impact means a better game. Because the impact depends a lot in the context surrounding the game. For example, mario kart 64 was more impactful than diddy kong racing or even some other mario kart games, wii, 7, 8. And its not better than any of those.
Final fantasy 7 is arguably the most impactful of the franchise, because it was the first rpg for a lot of americans. But many fans would debate that its not the best in the series, the title often being disputed between 6 and 9.
If we are talking about impact, then there is no way smash should've lost against mario party 2.

And i don't think thats accidental, they applied the same "make the look timeless" philosophy when developing wind waker.
But yeah any of those arguemnts you've mentioned are more relevant than the impact of the game.
How the game looks like, how it sounds, which game is more fun to play, better story, etc etc.
Don't get me wrong, star fox is an awesome game for all the reasons they've mention, i just don't think how relevant the game was to the industry should be an argument, or at least not the main argument.
there is a lot of factors to put in. no one said impact is the only thing but it is a good thing to look at. like between mario party and smah. i personally think smash should have won but both games were impactful for their own reasons. smash redefining the fighting genre and mario party being the only fun board game style game on console at the time. no other game did what either of them did. in this scenario star fox was the only game that made a heavy impact on the industry as where the other 2 really didn't so it is a good thing to point out.

Man, Paper Mario got the short end of the stick again. They didn't even talk about how Peach was used in the game, or all the badges, and the polish and how timeless it is other than some small commentary about how the art style holds up to. It's just a better game and one of the all-time best quintessential N64 games
