I hate the fact that the animation of Ed Edd n Eddy is not being talked about at all. That show is a master class of how to animate a cartoon, and that’s because that was a major sticking point for Its creator. It was one of the last major shows to use traditional animation for every freaking frame, and it’s freaking gorgeous. The art style itself may not be for everyone, but that animation is unparalleled.

    • @WardenChult

This! The free form jazz musical style and the various amount of avant garde sound effects fits the uniquely chaotic nature of the show. No other cartoon at the time had this going for them.

I knoooow, Dexter was my favorite as a child, powerpuff girls was the girls show, but it worked in the end, because it was the same part of CN shows (and I get why they are at the top here), but Ed, Edd n Eddy was the less funny of the group (for more adults one could work) ...but as a kid in the 90s the fight was Dexter vs PPG.

As a stickler for animation, the conversation about the style of Powerpuff Girls and how it "inspired" the visuals of future shows really irked me. Lee called it out. It's cheap. And it "inspired" the visuals of future shows because it's cheap. Sacrificing artistic quality for the sake of cutting costs should not be praised.

This is tough. I mean Dexter had some brilliant writing. The Speedracer episode was soooooo amazing. Then you had sillier episodes, like the dog trying to tell him something, and let's not forget about the Monkey segments.
PPG was my jam at the time though. The villians, side characters, and the anime style action. Great stuff!
E,E, AND E wasn't necessarily a bad show. It just came at a time when I wasn't invested in the Cartoon Network. Rewatching it now, I can see why it's great. But nostalgia plays a huge role. So it's at the bottom of my list.

The number one Dexter episode that stands out for me is the cheese omelette episode. There's also some great episodes from the series after they updated the art. I loved the Dad episodes and the Mandark episodes a lot. But Ego Trip was the best Dexter thing ever. They need to release it on Blu-Ray.

I've made several comments this video in response to people, but I figured making something standalone would be wise as well.
The entire premise of Madness is a good idea. Debating what show or game was the best could have lead to some very interesting retrospection into each person's history and how they view things. But that's not how this is going down.
You guys really didn't think this through, from what I've seen. No ground rules have been set. Games and shows have lost for the same reason another won. Comments are made that constantly contradict the point being made, and most minds are made up before the episode even films.
You guys really need to retool this idea. Set ground rules. Start each episode by saying your votes, then debate. At the end, see if anyone changed their minds. Have people defend their viewpoint while also trying to get others to see things from their stance. I get you want a more relaxed format. But this is just disorganized madness.
There are plenty of comments made that are just blatantly not true. In this episode, Alex went in on the art style of EEnE, apparently not realizing the oddball art fit for a show about oddball kids. No other art style would have done the series justice.
I like the idea, really, but if you don't make some changes, I doubt Madness will last. I want you guys to be successful, to have this new idea take off. That's why I'm offering constructive criticism. I could have gone the belligerent route, insulted you and called you names. But that doesn't help anyone. Instead, I'm pointing out the flaws I see, and offering at least an idea to work with so you can fix said flaws.
I know I'm just some schmuck, and my opinion alone may not mean much, but there are others in the comments section unhappy with the current format of the show. I'm just trying to fix the leak before it becomes a problem. Do with my comments what you wish. I've said my piece, and that's all I can do.

    • @boomkruncher325zzshred5
      @boomkruncher325zzshred5 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I don’t think that would fix the problem you are specifying.
The core problem I’m seeing with the show, according to the comments, is “I don’t understand why X show won/lost in Y bracket for Z reasons”.
Because of the loose format of the show, where the debaters make their own criteria and try to sway the other debaters, it feels like the decisions are not made transparent, despite the entire debate being filmed on TH-cam.
I think a full one-hour production is what was necessary, with individual interviews prior to and after the debate, to fully and completely understand what was going on in each debater’s head before they debated.
The problem with this approach? The debate becomes less about the topic of debate, and becomes about the individual idiosyncrasies of the debaters. Why? Because the more you understand what’s going on in the debater’s mind, the less is focused on the actual topic of debate.
Perhaps an actual solution is to strip out debate entirely, and leave the winner up to a community poll. That way, the debater’s individual decisions get drowned out by the collective opinion of the community.
But then we lose the debate format entirely, and we lose the entire point of the show.
Focusing on understanding the mind of the debater takes away from the debate topic, and focusing only on the debate topic loses focus on the insights from the individual debaters that only come out during the debate itself.
It’s a really hard problem to solve :(

I didn't mind him before but this series makes me dislike him, not for his opinions on shows i like but just his lack of consideration for others and his demeaning nature of how he always gives "props" to the shows hes already X'd while just repeating the same points. We all know these shows are great but hes never given a reason why his shows that he favors are better. When are they talking about E,E&E's jazz compositions...
Every movement has been orchestrated which was huge!
Every character being very dynamic, The inventions... How did they came up with that stuff?
The slapstick visuals and sound effects, The take on the same few locations, The pacing of both the comedy and story in progress.
The PPGirls didn't really had any of those...
Also the way they beat up the
"bad guys" even if nothing has happened yet... made me feel nauseous.
I relate more to the villains,
Also saying the eds are bad...
    They are very dynamic too...
Eddy hides his fears through ignorant pride and Abuses because if his love self-esteem, Double D is highly intelligent both intellectually and psychologically and is the mother no one thinks he/she needs (But definitely does) Edd is a guy with a heart of gold he cares for his Friends and protects them and his Lil' big sis with his life he also can't read the room and is just about immune to pain...
    To name a few quirks.
Always felt awkward when I watched PPGirls, Don't hate the show, But they have such a weird almost sadistic take on heroism...
And dynamic isn't something you can find anywhere near them...
As for DexL Just plain weird, annoying, And has so many bad endings I always felt bad when and after watching it... Which isn't much of a compliment in my book.
Not for a show aimed for children at least.

I've said it in multiple episodes this season now, but really it bears repeating: next season needs *specific* criteria for what the winner of each matchup has. it's very noticeable in this season and even a bit in the last season that it seems like every episode the reasoning for why something wins changes, most noticeably between Ed Edd 'n Eddy vs Magic School Bus, then X-Men vs Arthur. MSB passed on because it meant more for the 90's, despite the group almost unanimously agreeing that EEnE was the more enjoyable show to watch today, then immediately flipping that reasoning in the next episode for the X-Men

Thanks for the comment section shout out PBG, ever changing metrics got a little frustrating in the last season, but explaining that on the fly arguments persuading people quickly in a chaotic debate show entitled, "madness" being part of the fun of how the show works makes a lot of sense. Camera work looks a little cleaner this go around as well, although the 2 shots are giving the subjects a bit of a haircut at times and could probably be a little wider, a wider focal length on those could help with getting crisper focus on the subjects of those tight shots as well. The white board serving as Background for PBJ close 2 shot is also a little distracting and hot on exposure. Be cool to have background dressing for the punched in shots as well, Having a ton of "Arthur" stuff in the background of PBJ's coverage would be funny and personal, I know he has plenty at his house lol! Keep up the good work, can't wait for season 3!

But my most favorite out of the three is the Powerpuff Girls.
I can relate to some of the girls. Plus they’re cute, kick ass, are funny, and action packed.
    And they have great songs.
    Awesome villains.
I was so obsessed with them when I was a kid back in elementary school.
I wore PPG PJs, played PPG Games (both board game and Gameboy Color video game), own plushies, a piggy bank, PPG blanket, pillow case, and sheet.
I even drew the PPG when I was learning how to draw better, by first tracing them on a magazine.
Other reasons why I love PPG:
They have TARA STRONG, and TOM KENNY. They’re some of the best voice actors and actresses ever.
Tara Strong who voiced Bubbles also voiced other great characters like Raven from Teen Titans.
    Ben from Ben 10.
    Dil from Rugrats
Tom Kenny voiced Mayor and also voiced SPONGEBOB.
    Dog from CatDog.
    And more.

As much as we joke about the "True essence of an N64" it was at least the criteria that every game was being compared to, which made their choices more understandable regardless if you agreed or not.
Here it goes from "what's the show I watched more as a kid" to "what's the show I'd rather watch now" to "which one do I not want erased from history"

    • @GamerNumNums

Their arguments didn't prove that Animaniacs was the better show, their arguemnts lead to the conclusion that the two were very different shows, that couldn't really be compared directly. They voted Hey Arnold because that was the show they'd prefer to watch given the choice. It wasn't like the Magic School Bus thing where they were like, "yeah the show has bad animation, bad jokes, straight up teaches certain things incorrectly, and is overall unwatchable by today's standards, but for some reason we're gonna vote for it anyway".

Anyway I'm really glad PPG took this one.
I agree that EEnE is probably more "entertaining", in that you can just sort of pop it on and get some chuckles out of it and not really get tired of it. It's the kind of thing I put on in the background while I'm working. PPG is the kind of show where if I put it on while I'm working, I end up actually watching it. To me it's like EEnE is popcorn but PPG is a burger. Sure you can have a bunch of it and feel like you're eating, but the other one really satisfies.
Plus I agree with Alex that its lasting impact is an important factor; I feel like he wasn't trying to say that it was the better show because it had such a lasting impact but rather that lasting impact is a testament to how good it was, and I feel the same way.

I think it would really benefit this series to have multiple criteria towards the final decision rather than a voted consensus. Like, voting on five categories rather than making five votes. The categories could be the topics often touched on like "nostalgia", "influence on viewers / future cartoons", "production quality", "lasting appeal / popularity", and "uniqueness / innovation". I think giving due credit to different aspects of the shows would both make viewers feel better about their favored show losing and would take the pressure of making the ultimate decision off of the last voters at the table.

I respect Alex and his opinion, but he seriously needs to just calm down and let the others talk about the shows. I feel the problem is with this series is Alex just rambles on and on about the show he likes and always links it back to why he likes that show while politely but also firmly puts down the other ones.
I think Shane had some great things to say and I would have loved to see him Barry and PBG talk more about Ed Edd n Eddy as they have good opinions on the show but the conversation always drifted back with Alex talking about the style of PPG and the impact it had any moment the Eds were being talked about.
Not dissing PPG as I love the show myself, but you especially when they knocked down Dexter right at the start you feel the conversation would be easier talking about two shows at equal length. I know Lee tries tying it back to give each show enough time, but I feel like with someone like Alex you need to take more effort bringing the conversation back to the others. Otherwise it's just him stating his opinion and not giving the others enough time to form their own.

The writing was incredible, the jokes had way more depth, many of the stories were fleshed out. There's a reason why there's communities around Powerpuff Girls and why it got a movie... much of it is the visuals, much of it was the writing, much of it was how unique it was. It was clearly the best.

This round had me between PPG and EEnE. I absolutely adored both shows as a kid.
PPG because it was a superhero show I could actually get into and the stories they had were pretty great and memorable. And had female characters that weren't just 'ditzy, damsels, or stuck up richies' (tho there were some characters that had those qualities, but there were also strong female characters)
EEnE also had some nice episodes too of course. And had a variety of kids from culture/living styles. Seeing how the boys got out of the trouble they made was always interesting. The slapstick comedy had its shining moments and Edd brought a 'smart' edge to the crazy schemes. And a great unique art style, always loved the coloring and linework.
However in the end I did end up feeling that PPG is the stronger show overall.

The fact that something is groundbreaking doesn’t necessarily mean that it is good.
Mario 64 was groundbreaking in 3D gaming, and it is good because it still holds up to games of the genre 20years later. But if Superman 64 was the groundbreaking game, people will see 20years later that it sucked.
Also I think the “explain yourself” button is something they should’ve kept in this show, so that people don’t have to say things over and over again.
On the other hand, this is a new show. It’s filmed with a lot of content in short amount of time. That means it takes longer for us, the viewers, to see improvement.

I think that if they ever do another season of Madness about tv shows (or even just future episodes in general) they need to set up a criteria of what to compare the shows on to make it more consistent. Every episode so far has felt like they were debating a different reason on which show was better. Someone else pointed it out in the comments, but I think it's worth repeating; as much as we joke about the "essence of the N64" it did keep the conversations focused more on other things besides pure nostalgia. That feels absent here.

  • @kezreck_
    @kezreck_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I get it. You have to put "Best 90's Cartoon" in the title instead of "our favorite 90's cartoon" because otherwise the youtube algorithm won't put you as high on the search results. But the problem is that you guys keep having things come down to personal taste while trying to sound like you have some kind of deeper knowledge on the subject. If this show had been called "Our Personal Picks for Best 90's Cartoon" and you all sat around just letting the nostalgia run wild, it would have been fine. Heck, it would have been great to just see some youtube personalities having a light-hearted discussion on old cartoons! But instead they can't seem to differentiate between opinion and subjective arguments and it's incredibly frustrating to listen to. Do you judge a show based pop culture impact, individual quality, or personal favoritism? It's probably a combination of the three, but you have to stay CONSISTENT.
When it comes to pop culture impact, it's kinda hard to argue against Dexter's Lab. This was one of the first original shows Cartoon Network tried out. The success of the show spurred CN on to continue developing shows into the dozens of properties that have saturated pop culture today. How does it hold up in quality? Well, again this was a very early attempt by Genndy Tartakovsky and so it does suffer. And when he left the show in later seasons, it's quality drops again. You can definitely make the argument that while Dexter's Lab paved the way, it might not hold up wonderfully on its own today.
The crew even mentions that Powerpuff Girls "seems like an evolution of Dexter's Lab" yet they don't immediately make the point that Genndy Tartakovsky and Craig McCracken cut their teeth on that show, so of course Powerpuff Girls is going to be a much better product. It definitely stands up better on its own merits today. As for cultural impact, this one one of the first big hits that had girls being the main protagonist and using violence to solve problems. In that way, it really did serve as an example that this kind of setup can actually be successful. I guarantee you that the marketing department would have been doubtful about Powerpuff Girls being a hit since--to them--boys wouldn't watch a "girl's show" and girls wouldn't watch a violent show. But it performed well and proved them wrong, making it easier for similar shows to get the greenlight in the future. Plus, the experience of working on Powerpuff Girls directly helped to make shows that appeared later like Samurai Jack and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends turn out to be amazing productions.
Then you have Ed, Edd, and Eddy, which was one of the last hurrahs of the slapstick comedy genre that was dying out. Cartoon Network was originally built on reruns of Hana-Barbara properties and most of them used that kind of slapstick humor. Plus it emulates a lot of Warner Bros. cartoons, which CN also hosted reruns of for a good chunk of its history before really getting devoted to original programming. Ed, Edd, and Eddy was a strange show at the time, but it knew exactly what it was and excelled at the job it set out to do. If you're not a fan of slapstick comedy, it's not going to be your thing. And unfortunately when Ed, Edd, and Eddy was in its prime, that style of humor wasn't hugely popular among Cartoon Network's audience. But for fans that had been dying for new cartoons that relished in zany violence, Ed, Edd, and Eddy was exactly what they were after, thus even today it has a lot of die-hard fans. Even after all this time, it still holds up as a great example of slapstick humor. However, when it comes to its overall pop culture impact, Ed, Edd, and Eddy has remained pretty much a cult classic. It didn't catch on due to the environment of TV at the time and thus it kinda faded away rather than opening the door for new stuff. Out of the three shows it probably holds up the best (though you can definitely argue PPG as well), it just didn't make the same pop culture splash.
So which is the best? That's not really my point. My point is you have all these facts that you can get from just browsing over each show's wikipedia page fifteen minutes before you start filming and you'll be way better informed when you start discussing things. Rewatching a show now does nothing unless you remember watching the show --in the environment when it aired--! Rewatching lets you more accurately remember a show now so you can judge it on how well it's stood up since its original airing, but if you're just being introduced to the show they you really should keep your points to how it's objectively impacted pop culture history. Madness has become frustrating to watch because it presents itself as trying to make an informed decision when the panel doesn't seem to be very informed on the subject. Not only that, but there's no clear scale as to whether objectively good, culturally impactful, or personal favorite shows win each round. Again, if this had just been friends going full nostalgia-mode on these shows to pick their favorites, it would have been enjoyable even if I disagreed with their choices. The guys on the panel are genuinely great people who are fun to watch. Plus the production quality of Madness itself is quite good, as you'd expect from a team of youtube veterans. But it's clear they're pretending to have some kind of authority because that's what sells in the youtube algorithm. Since I can also game the algorithm in my small way, I'm not going to click on any more Madness videos for this series. Maybe next time they'll have polished their game and I'm still rooting for the Normal Boots channel.

@dwinters62 Yesss. He's always saying how the shows overall impacted culture, but he is so passionately enthusiastic about it that it just turns to his preference and taste

He deserves agression because he is dictating this show and its extremely boring listening to him repeat the same points over and over. Its a discussion show and it should be more heated and less one sided and people should have to back themselves up with valid points after they are challenged. They hardly even talk about the shows because they are too busy relating them to other things and reminding me of why they are important rather than why they are good

It would be nice if you guys had a more specific criteria. Best 90s show. Best show to still watch? Show that influenced the most? The show in which you have the best memories for? I mean I feel the lack of a specific criteria is the reason for the name Madness but honestly i feel the show may play better with a point for point look at things of "Settings plots styles main characters supporting characters etc." adjust as need be for competition. obviously i can look for a different show to find these things possibly, but I assume there is a level of viewer feedback that is considered here.
Example for last season: The best N64 game. Is the game the best N64 game? Or did it just influence a lot of other games? Does it still play well? If you were given this game to play, would it still be worth your time to play it? or would you be frustrated at it for not holding up like you remember. ETC
TLDR: More specific Criteria for judging things as "the best ____" not "the most influential____" or "The most likely to get me out of reading in class"

This is one of the few episodes where they actually came to a conclusion I enjoyed. Still can't believe Arthur lost to Xmen, although I am glad that Ed lost to Magic School Bus.

I just noticed dexter is in the thumbnail (watching it chunks). At a glance, i thought he was from PPG.

I wish the random clips weren’t, you know, random. Like, when they were talking about Bubbles’ Spanish, they could put a short clip of that. Clips relating to the topic at hand.

EE&E Pros: Has a unique art style that sets it apart. Has many sounds you can identify from the show. Has definitely more humor and gags for children, teens and adults. Episodes can take any turn, its not always a win or lose. The characters were all weird but relatable in their own ways. Didn't feel all that dated.
PPG Pros: Show could be picked up by anyone, boy or girl. Had moral episodes that taught lessons. Interesting Villains,(although if you look at them, you realize they were kinda racist depictions of some groups, so that could be a down side.) Stories that could expand the city. Character development.
I vote Ed ,Edd, and Eddy.

I never really watched Power Puff Girls as a kid, it was rarely the best show to watch at any given time, but I still remember enjoying it when I did. Dexter's Lab I probably watched more often, and I absolutely hated it, I don't know why I ever would have watched it, somebody else must have had control of the remote, but I hated Dexter's Lab, I always felt so bored watching it. Ed Edd 'n Eddy I watched A TON of as a kid, it was hillarious! If I was to sit down and watch one of those shows, easily Ed Edd ' n Eddy. However, the legacy it had and its impact on culture and cartoons, is nonexistent. Power Puff Girls on the other hand, left a greater impact as it was one of the first popular female shows, and superheroine shows of all time. It undeniably did a lot for the industry, so ultimately, with no doubt in my mind, X-Men TAS would have to win this round. :3 I honestly hope that becomes a running gag in this show tho, where it seems really one sided, and then at the end someone immediately votes for the the "worse" one or just says "I'm gonna have to go with X-Men bc yea".

I remember Blossom speaking Japanese. Bubbles speaks to animals (or maybe just squirrels?). I don't remember any of the 3 speaking Spanish, but I could be wrong.

I can actually agree with just about everything this vid, a previous comment of mine on a Madness was sided on EEE side and I had named off a few that tied for 1st making rugrats 5th...then I had 2 edits as the video had went on and more occured to me that I categorized as different in my head and heart for multiple reasons as not 'regular' cartoons and being different, like anime being different as well even though it is all animated. Without the whole rehash, I had forgot the powerpuffs as well, they may push out rugrats in my top 5 if I ever had to make my own definitive list for the 90s, and while I wouldave placed EEE above the Powerpuffs in my own, I have no issue respecting anybody who place the PP over EEE, and Dexter is freaking awesome but definitely doesnt stand against either PP or EEE.

Tough decision but I'd go with the same order. PPG > EE&E > Dexter. I think Dexter just got annoying after seeing it reran so many more times than the other two. I believe it's the oldest so makes sense.

This video was all about Cartoon Network's hit shows. The next video will pit an edutatinment show with heart, a horror comedy cult classic, and a classic variety show against each other. Maaaaan this next video is gonna be rough.
