I wrote this song because my heart was heavy. I never thought it would be heard by so many people nor did I think someone else would even want to sing it. I'm glad it is touching people's hearts. Although I sing it a little differently on another TH-cam video I love your version as well. I call it the Correctional Officer Song.

I appreciate the sentiment of the song. One thing. "Do eight and hit the gate" has always had bad connotations with me and those I work with because it was always a way to describe those who sat there, doing nothing until it was time to get the hell out of there. The worthless. The one's you could NOT trust to have your back. Other than that, good song.

On Friday I take the oath to become a CO of the TDCJ. It’s been six weeks of hard work but I’ve met some people I know will be life long friends.
It’s not just about money and benefits, it’s about something bigger than me, my family and friends. It’s about my state and my country. It’s about morals, and doing the right thing.
I want to serve the great state of Texas and keep the innocent safe, I want to help reform those who have made mistakes so that they don’t hurt others when released.
Above all, I want to do the morally right thing and make the world a better place. What I do may be a drop in the bucket, but I want my drop to be good and right.

We are the forgotten cops seen by many as unskilled labor but still we go on, short staffed we go on, low pay and budget cuts we go on. Until society finds another way to deal with its worst, we go on.

To all my brothers and sister Officers still behind the gates. Be safe and watch each others back. No one truly knows what we do on a daily basis but they know how to scape goat us when things go wrong and the Admins begin to cover their asses.
Retired this year in July after 17 years with NYCDOC. Whether you are on Rikers or San Quentin all you have when you need them are your fellow Officers.
