    I ordered a 2019 M240i in December 2018 and will be picking it up tomorrow. Estoril Blue with Black leather and all the boxes ticked. Loved the car when I test drove it with my wife and she loved it too. We also compared to an M2, and didn't like the jounce in the suspension on rough roads; also preferred to get xDrive so that's what we went with. Smoother suspension, all wheel drive, brilliant engine, etc. We are very excited to pick it up tomorrow in Monterey, California. Thanks to reviewers like you who helped us get pointed in this direction.

    Jump ahead, got a 2018 M240i XDrive with 4k miles for under $40k. Damn near every option. AMAZING machine. Was planning on the next gen Subaru STi, but I got this cheaper and it is literally twice the car. 0-60 in 4.2 and you feel every bit of it. The heated steering wheel is actually grand. M exhaust and all. Snap, crackle, and pop. Hands down an incredible deal.

    I've had the M240i for a couple of weeks now and absolutely love it. About $10,000 less then the M2 in the ZF8 configuration vice the M2 DCT. Was on a couple of M2 waiting lists for a number of months with no allocations to be found. Test drove the M240i and was sold. Couldn't give a shit that it's not a "real" M car, this car is a blast to drive and a great daily driver as well. Bite me haters.

      At this point the main difference is that the M2 will hold their value more than the m240i. But if you don't care about the devaluation, the 240i is a great deal

    i bought the m235 about 9 months ago, i love it! Had lots of different bmw's from the early 90's and the engine is probably the best engine i have ever had in any bmw. It has been put together so well that you dont even realise that there is a turbo, there is no turbo lag whatsoever. The m235 engine was also tuned very very well. Its slower only by a margin then the m2 but from 160kph it starts to leave the m2 all the way to the governor at 250.
    Really a fantastic bmw! my ONLY ONLY wish was to get it in the nicer leather option that the m4's and the other more expensive cars come with.
    I went to see the m240 now and the difference is mariginal, all you get is extra sat nav and some stitching on the seats. The engine performance is pretty much the same. Besides, with a bmw performance chip, the m235 goes to 382bhp which is faster then the m2...
    Anyways, i love my car :)

    Drove this car and 230i for test the same day. Both are fantastic. The m240i seems actually too powerful, if that makes sense. Never drove the M2 but assume it’s insanely good. I actually preferred the 230i when considering overall package, price, performance etc. in sport mode the acceleration in the 4 cyl is just fantastic, plenty of power. 2 series is really great, beautiful cars.

  • @topgun2628
    @topgun2628 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The dilemma is that while one would normally want the M2 over the M240i, the M2 still uses the N55 engine which will be obsolete in the near future. The M240i doesn't have the body or handling of the M2, but that B58 is such a beast that it makes you feel like you didn't get the full package if you got the M2. So for anyone in the market, pick the M240i for the B58 engine & pick the M2 if you want the track handling & aggressive styling. BMW already said there is no engine change for the base M2 in LCI so for. those that can't get over not having an advanced tuned version of the B58, wait for the next Gen.

    • @anthonyb2990
      @anthonyb2990 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the N55 M2 makes more power than the B58 in the M240i and it has a DCT..?

  • @yeahman349
    @yeahman349 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I'll go with the M240i purely because I won't be using it on a race track and for everyday driving it beats the M2. On the roads of Great Britain you'll be battered and bruised driving a car with stiff suspension so just on that it's a no brainer - the M240i.

    I just put my deposit down on an M240i mostly for the price. In Canada the M2 is about 15,000 dollars more and I'd only get to use the difference in performance about two or three times a year. Mine is an x-drive in grey and it will take about three months to get here. I'm currently driving a big ford pickup ( because of work ) so this should be a sweet sweet change. Good God I can hardly wait.

    Have seen both your 230i and now this POV review of the M240i. I too have driven both here in the U.S. with the ZF 8 speed AT. When I configured them similarly...M-Sport, Premium & Track Package (for the 230) price difference is ~ $4,000. I like the lighter, more nimble driving feel of the 230i, its lower price to purchase and insure. But will admit, the strong and smooth acceleration of the M240 is addictive. Logic tells me 230i; emotion sometimes says M240i. Very difficult decision...appreciate your reviews. Am always thankful for U.S. vehicle pricing relative to Europe!

    Great car, but 'better' depends on what criteria you are judging it by.
    It might be the better car for a daily driver.
    The M2 looks better, sounds better, is faster, much better steering feedback, better cornering ability, has a better interior, and will hold it's value higher when used because it's a proper M car and not just a 'pretend M'.

    Had my M240i for just over a month. What a car. My previous car was a tuned VW Scirocco R, and before that a tuned mk6 Golf GTI. They were both great cars, and pretty fast, but the M240i is a whole new level of enjoyment with the sweet howl of the 6 cylinder engine and RWD. • @joachimriegel3253
      @joachimriegel3253 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zblazek2 Of course, a pleasure to give you some information...
      The average consumption from a mix of 40% normal road, 50% Autobahn and around 10% inner city traffic is 8,7 l/100 kilo.
      Due to that I m living in the Rhein Main area near Frankfurt the daily jam traffic allows in majority only a speed level around 75 km/h in average.
      But outside of rush hour I m throughout able to speed up to 260 km/h .... which is going very quick due to the amazing torque of this engine, means overall its also an amazing low level of fuel consumption for such a powerful car ...
      If I m going only in normal regular speed mode I achieved also around 8,0 l/kilo !
      This is not to compete by any other car in this power class.
      ...and for the time being (currently I have passed 113.000 km) I had no single one issue with this engine.
      I keep strictly all the maintanance rules !
      The only point where I m deviating of the BMW recommendations ... I change engine oil and filter every 15.000 km ... and not awaiting the regular 30.000 distance.

    I just sold my M2 and bought an M240i, my friends raised an eyebrow and didn't understand why
    But after I explained to them that in daily driving in the city the M2 is simply not built for it - you hear every noise and the vehicle is more bouncy - I certainly was not comfortable with it since I live and work in the city. The advantage of the m2 is in turns or on the track because the vehicle is more stable
    I am much happier with the M240i but for some people who want to take the car to the track the M2 will suit them better.

    I live in NY, USA. Prefer the 235/240i as my next car. M2 is about $10k more, and of course it doesn’t have x drive, which I want because we have snow and serious winters here. I think you cannot go wrong with any 2 series, even the base model is very sporty and performs far beyond what you would expect from a smaller 4 cyl engine when in sport mode. The sport seat package should be considered mandatory and makes a very big difference, they are far more comfortable and cooler lookin*than the regular seats. BMW for the win, again!

      Only on a straight road, which requires no skill.
      On a twisty undulating road, your car could have 600bhp and it still wouldn't see which way the M2 went.
      I know this 100%, I owned an M140i for 4 years, running 455bhp/634nm, and I now have a standard OG M2.
      Remap the M2 and put a larger intercooler on, and it will be over 400bhp anyway.

Mit dem xdrive und adaptiven Fahrwerk fressen sich die Reifen Nahezu in den Asphalt. Nice Review :D but i will prefer the m240i. i get a 335i n54 with M-Perfomance exhaust with 6 shift sport automatic gearbox and nice engine with exhaust sounds. The Gearbox is not the slowest but not so fast like m1/235i or m1/240i. But i decided to buy a m135i cuz its more effecient , faster and i love the fast shifting with the 8 shift automatic gearbox.
    Anyways Nice Video ;).

    Depends what you think is better? The m240i is not an m car. The m2 is on another level. Not so much in outright pace, they’re similar. But everything else. Exhaust, gearbox, differential, feel - everything is on another level in the m2.

      It is a mode you use more time than you can expect... city driving and all. I only switch to comfort/sport mode when I wanna overtake fast, the lovely part is that as soon as you switch the modes, you feel the instant power. Sport mode is better when you have to go out from the city or play around for fun.

      Also, you can tootle along in eco mode for best economy and quiet driving in everyday traffic, but just floor the pedal and the M240 instantly kicks hard to get out trouble when you need it to.

    With the performance and the 8 speed automatic gearbox i would go for a M140i, because of 5 doors and the greater usability for all day drive. To be serious the M140i/M240i, with xdrive or not, is the better car, if you don't go to racetracks or something like that. For public roads the M2 is not that much faster and on the autobahn i thing there is no difference between the M2 and M140i/M240i. The M2 is overall the faster car, bacause of more power, the better chassis, the faster gearbox, but it is in every point only a tick of a second and in germany there is a difference in price of 10 - 11 k€ but you get way more % on the price of a M140/240 than you will get on a M2.

My duel clutch Cayman GTS shifts instantly but I really don't see where I'm gonna use that aside from serious track competitions which I don't participate in and if I did I wouldn't use a slow Cayman...(ok I guess it's not slow but can't beat the kids with the super cars haha)

    • @AutoTopnl
      @AutoTopnl  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +scamaker The B58 engine in the 240i is a real gem.. it's smoother, more powerful and just feels a lot more beefy. But I'd drive them both to see if you think it's worth the price difference!

    • @2Spot8
      @2Spot8 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +AutoTopNL, agree B58 is fantastic. +scamaker I found N55 from M235 to be more peakier and seemed to want to rev right to the limiter to get its max performance. The B58 didn't seem to need it and felt meatier and powerful earlier in the rev range, even though it will happily rev out to 7K. I haven't personally checked but have read B58 also more economical, maybe because it's greater torque allows more economical driving. I believe B58 turbo is also positioned closer to intake than in N55, improving its responsiveness. I was looking also at Audi and Merc, but was sold after driving the M240 after seeing this review in Jan 2017. Unfortunately, the colour and options I chose meant I had to wait 4mths for delivery, but car should be here in 2wks! Can't wait :)

    • @opsolys

      One thing I didn't expect was being told the next gen M240 only gets 4 cylinders. Only the M2 will continue with 6cyls. If that's true, this being the last of the M240's with 6cyls is even more desirable now :)

  • @denizguven505

    In Turkey M240i is not on sale but
    M235i is about 100k € and
    M2 is about 135k€. Also Euro to TL (Turkish Lira) is 3.30. So these cars are only dream for us here.
    I think these cars don't worth that much money compared to worldwide prices. If I could afford money, I would pick M2 with Long Beach blue. It looks perfect with that wide body. M2 is more special in my opinion. But M240i (also an amazing car) has the same look with 218i (which is 45k€ here). So like the driver said it is about price difference between cars. I also agree that it is more logical to buy an M240i in Netherlands.
    All in all 220i with Estoril blue would be my favourite with decent performance and relatively low price. :) But unfortunately is not on sale in Turkey.

      Korn Yeah. Also 1 Euro is more than 3 TL. So M2 is about 450k TL. But we don't earn 3 times of a European person earn. That means it is maybe 6 times harder to buy a car like this here.

      So sad. :( This is a dramatic result of undeveloped economies.
      Also there are bad news here that before 2017 the government will make a law which increases taxes of premium brands. So cars under 1.6 lt engines' taxes are going to increase from %45 to %74. (Also this tax is taken from standart %18 taxed price). We are the only country in the world that is taken the tax of tax.
      I just don't know what to say. Don't we deserve to live like human? If we would know that our taxes are good for country and will upgrade the life quality, we will not complain .But all of us know that these taxes are only thicken politicians wallets, fill up their relatives pockets.

    • @Karim.R1
      @Karim.R1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      we have similar taxes but even worse, we also have that shitty tax of tax, well same as u said about the 1.6L cars the customs tax decreased from 100% of the cars original price to 60% then to 40% but along with the decrease in customs tax u pay a sales tax on the original price + customs tax which is a joke, or a robbery :s
      any car with more than 1.6L or 4 cylinders pay 175% of the cars original price then u add the price to the customs and pay the sales tax which quadruples the car's original price, but now 4 days ago the government decreased the value of the egyptian pound by half so all of the above increased by double, its a total nightmare, i now have my E36 coupe and there's not way i'll sell it ever :)

    m240i is for someone who wants to drive a M coupe with minimium money, and mainly used on the road between office and home and shops, and also want to make an impression that they are performance car lovers. M2 is for someone who are performance car lovers but also have to drive the same car between those places, also they may drive it on track when they get a chance.

      Better at what? As the reviewer said, if you're not tracking your car, compared with the M240, the M2 is a very unforgiving ride in everyday driving and will hammer your kidneys into submission. Unless you don't care about the ride (and the majority of buyers definitely do), the M240 is the better choice if you're not going to track your car.

      +Robin J No alcantara, they didn't sell it with those seats here (I wanted those, I like alcantara more than leather tbh hehe), only for m135 at that moment. About the feature, the version of the infotainment changed a bit (it looks different in the video), but yes I have all the driving modes, I can customize the suspension and handling response, although I haven't since I didn't see the point :). The defaults are already what I need. I didn't noticed much difference between sport and sport+ in the power/suspension, the steering wheel is the same (a bit heavy), only the handling gets a bit more difficult haha.

      The M140i (same powertrain as a m240i) has been dynoed at 360whp (over 400hp to the crank) and has been tested at 4.2-4.3 0-60mph. It's the size of an e46 M3 and is faster than the e92. With minor bolt ons (intake, downpipe, JB4) it's over 500hp on the B58 platform and over 600hp with a stage 1 turbo upgrade from Pure Turbos ($1,000). Pair that with the bulletproof and very responsive ZF8 transmission, and you have a monster.
