    I was very impressed with the craftsmanship of the stool, so to start with, I will implement many things I saw on your video for future attempts at chairs and stools. But what I found most amazing was the jig you made to turn the legs. I have been turning wood on a lathe for seven or eight years, and there is no way I can turn three legs identically. That table saw jig is outstanding. It was one of those moments when I thought, how come I never thought of that. Anyhow, great job!

    Great result, Ben! Still working thru your videos (they get pissy when I watch at work). I immediately understood the purpose of the primer trick - but my question is, how much or how deep will that soak into the grain? Laughed at the spider - after all that machining, it finally said, "FU!" to the epoxy. Love your work, dude. Have you happened to see the New Yorkshire Workshop video channel? He does lots of stuff - like you - but apparently his 'thing' is making custom stereo turntable bases, and he uses... well, I'd guess about every kind of automotive finish available in Great Britain... but on wood.

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey bud, the primer is really a piss coat / a dust coat, you could just use a pencil but paint covers it all quickly, I doubt it goes much more than pencil - seems to take the same time to sand off by hand too. Ive never tired it on end grain mind. I dont watch much wood working on youtube more car stuff F1 and how to edit vids mainly - to be honest its a luxury when I do watch as i'm normally editing when Im at home.

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you Russel 😊 the spray paint was undercoat, you can use any spray paint, the idea is the same as using a guide coat on car body panel’s. So say you’ve gunned you high build primer you then can spray a colour over it and block the primer down flat - the guide coat shows you the low and high spots 👍 hope that makes sense?

    Man, I guess you're into Festool! But, hey, you could sure teach yourself how to spray finish your pieces, as it takes so much less time and makes for a professional finish.
    Thanks for sharing your ideas with us.

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Marty 😊 No that was primer, I use it like a guide coat on car panels when blocking back the primer to show me the low and high spots to get to flat, if that makes sense? I’ve hand absolute rubbish tools back in the day, upgraded to dewalt and so on then found the Festool system saved me time/money and my lungs. I can spray very well, I just don’t feel it comes close to the durability of Osmo polyX hard wax oil, pretty much my go-to finish. Plus the waste involved spraying is horrendous, but I have HVLP guns, really only used for my ride-and-joy and know more about spraying two-pak paint than finish for furniture to be honest.

    1:43. May 1, 2011. In that glorious day in Saint Petersburg, Russia, an fm radio station "Radio record" introduced its new podcast "Гоп ФМ" ( = Chav fm) starring this radio stuff DJs. Artem Skorobogaty, a famous master of ceremonies, dancing "Пацандополь" ( = "bro doble" that in russian language actually sounds close to "Paso Doble", a spanich dance) on "Hard Bass" (an electronic musical style, originated in Saint-Petersburg in the mid-00th) was a meme video a half decade ago in Russia. Now it's your time Britannia. Hold on there )))))

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you’re wrong. The wedges should always be at 90 degrees to the grain direction to say in the case of the stile piece. If the wedges were running in line with the stile grain they would drive apart the tenon and risk splitting the stile.
      I appreciate that a stool seat isn't exactly a stile piece, but the same principle applies, the wedge is at 90 degrees to the direction of grain on the seat, so no matter how hard the wedge is pounded in (or how much the seat subsequently shrinks across the grain) it's not going to split the seat.

      @HewAndAwe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Joyce Please don’t, most of the reason I do this is to inspire people - I learned the hard way with that joint with a leg splitting, that could of been avoided by drilling a hole at the base of the gap of the void for the wedge, but it made me think what about seasonal wood movement given this is more of a mechanical joint like dovetails are and came about cause back in those days there was no glue, till they thought of melting horses that is 😳 Not sure which glue I used, I have many different types, different open times etc. Depends on the temp in my workshop, do I need to work on it pretty soon etc etc. I have them all, titebond 2/3 I try to stay away from cause it stains and a bitch to sand out say if you’re gonna stain the piece, PU is mostly what I use in winter, ready to work the piece in 5, 30 or 45 mins, very good strong glue if you know how to use it - generally PVA though if time permitting, hope that helps 👍
