This Chair Changed How I Make Furniture

- I had a go at making a modern chair out of bent wood, for the #RocklerBentWoodChallenge. This was my first time building a chair as well as steam bending timber like this, so it tested most of my woodworking knowledge. I had a lot fun on this one and couldn't be happier with the result!
I copied this chair off a picture I found online. I wanted to credit the original designer but couldn't find a whole lot on him. All I know is his name is James O'Leary and he created this piece as part of a furniture design course. I hope to one day give him proper recognition but so far this is all I can find: csn.ie/courses...

I love the cutouts for the slats. That's such a cool chair! The dog has perfect timing, "Do you mind if I carry on?" Dog: Huff.
This is glorious, been searching for "solid wood desk plans" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Yanathew Wood Waggler - (just google it )?
It is a smashing exclusive guide for building amazing sheds and your own wood work projects minus the normal expense. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my m8 got great success with it.
kon
thank god a video not full of product placement, with amazing workmanship! incredible :)
Good idea mr... I like it
Fantastic, build. Your dog reminds me of my cat, he wants to stand in front of my computer screen when I do my evening wrap up.
I saw my first steam bending last week with Padulla as he finished the head board of his bed. I’m going to get my feet wet on this soon. Again lovely build. ❤😊Wilber USA.
So nice
Robin I love the chair. you get my vote in the Rockler bent wood challenge. Well that is, if I had a vote.
Hahaha, thanks very much!
amazing workmanship!
This one is excellent piece of art
Dude! Really like this build , respect from a fellow woodworker.
Thanks man
You are a fantastic Gentleman, sir! Thank you for this! You are supporting your Brothers and Sisters all over the world with this wonderful positive message. Keep it up, my friend!
Awesome to see you grow as a woodworker Robin! You made really huge steps from when I started following you probably 1,5 years ago, when you guys started the podcast (I already followed Joey en Jordan) and you were the 'newbie' between those two experienced guys. It was a very good thing from Joey encouraging you to push your own limits. As a woodworker, I think I might scale myself somewhere between you and Joey and I think the only way to keep growing is by starting projects you can not handle yet. Just start, explore, make mistakes, do it over, make more mistakes, learn a lot and then build a chair like you just did. That's an awesome chair! So to see your skill level now 1,5 years later is awesome en I'm very excited to keep following you en your future projects, man! keep up the good work. And try to get enough sleep between pushing your woodworking limits and being a dad :) I got three little kids, I know what it can feel like ;)
It’s a full time job this dad business haha. Thanks man, really appreciate the kind words. You’re spot on about taking chances with new skills, it’s such a good way forward!
brilliant design and something that only true craftsmanship can produce.
Grande Robin, at the end, of course, I had no doubt, you nailed it! beautiful chair!

Chair Looks Awesome
very cool! those high round armrests look a bit uncomfy for a long read, are they?
Thanks! You’re not wrong, I wouldn’t say it’s a chair you lounge in. But for a short sit it does well
Awesome result congrats
Fabulous Chair & Great Craftmanship!

Brilliant job Robin. I love the harmony between the lines of the chair. I'm very impressed. G'day from Australia!

Amazing. Gorgeous work. This video is both satisfying and frustrating to watch. Satisfying in the excellent product delivered and the techniques used. Frustrating that as a woodworking hobbyist, I will never reach this level of pristine workmanship. Fantastic work!

Hi Robin, I saw your chair video about 3 weeks ago and it inspired me to have a go at steam bending. Since then, I’ve built my steam box and have just finished a mini version of your chair for my Grand-daughter! Challenging with the tighter bends but really pleased how it’s turned out. Keep your videos coming and thanks for the inspiration - I wonder how many steam bent chairs have been made as a result of your work. I bet they are dotted around the globe! Thanks again - Jim from the UK.
Thanks Jim, It’s so awesome to hear stories like this, thank you for sharing. I’m so happy my video helped! I’m sure you’ll agree, the steam bending bug takes hold pretty quick haha. All the best and thanks for the support

Stunning chair .. and great to hear a saffer accent .. Thanx
Thanks very much!
So beautiful
Thank you
Really amazing work.
That's an heirloom. Fantastic work, Robin. Crisp design, meticulous detail and you did it with kiln dried Tassie Oak and no table saw. I'm dead impressed! (I bet it's got a nice little spring to it when you sit back, too.)
For our American friends, Tasmanian Oak, eucalyptus regnans, is pretty darned rigid. Lovely stuff, though. Also called Mountain or Victorian Ash on the Australian mainland. Different climates produce subtly different timbers from this forest giant.
The tallest tree ever recorded was a Mountain Ash, sadly by the man who cut it down. (Hello, Australia.)
Thanks Jason, and thanks for that last bit, I had no idea they grew that tall
One of your best projects to date, very well done.
Thanks Dave
