- Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

You’re hardening off the goats!
😂😂 literally laughed out loud at this
Your goats are killing me with running after you yelling "wait...wait" 🤣
You walked away from your goats and it reminded of dropping a child off at preschool or children’s church…. Mommy! Don’t leave meeeee! So cute! 🥰
lol these were my exact thoughts.
Exactly!! It’s so cute and funny 😂
😂
I swear that I heard one of the goats screaming MOM, MOM!!! 😂❤😢
The white one was screaming Mommaaa❤
Yes!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Me too
Me too!!!
I heard it right along with you.... they know who Momma is ♥
Same! My daughter and I were laughing so hard at the MOOOOMMMMMMM!
The goats crying out “mommmmm don’t leave me” is probably the best thing on the internet today. 😂
If temperature changes is the issue, then water batteries are an easy way to mitigate that. Get large water tubs of any kind - barrels, milk jugs, totes...whatever. Paint them black to absorb heat better, and place them in the greenhouse - under the plant shelves would be great. They'll absorb heat during the day (lessening the heat the plants need to absorb) and give it off at night (lessening the heat loss of the greenhouse). It's a cheap solution, but it absolutely works.
Do the water containers need to be in direct sunlight to absorb heat? I know clear jugs would probably grow a lot of algae but could I use solid white jugs without painting them?
Agree!I cheat and have aquarium heaters in mine. That way they kick in if the temperature in the water tubs drops.
@@debbiep7419 They don't HAVE to be in direct sun. They just warm up faster that way. But they'll help equalize the temperature either way. And yes, any sort of jug would work, even unpainted. Paint just reduces algae and black paint helps with heat absorption. But it's helpful, not required.
Yes.there Is another big creator who does gardening and he swears by this. He has CITRIS trees in NJ!!!
@@ArtistCreek I have a small high tunnel I've had tropicals in for 2 years in zone 7b. The first year, I didn't have water batteries in it and I lost several of my plants over winter, even with 2 small heaters. This past year, I added 10 used black pickle barrels full of water, placed against the prevailing-wind side of the tunnel and only lost a single plant that was apparently in a draft. Even when temps went down to 19F, the tunnel stayed above freezing.
Haha! I just wonder how those docile, quiet cows feel about the goat chaos! 😂😂 🐐
The Goats! I never knew they were so dramatic… i find it delightful.. Thank Jess, i loved watching this today. It just makes me happy. Bless you!
And the goats say "Ma, Ma, Ma, Ma. Why are you leaving us with these cows?" Too cute. 🐐❤
I loved when you talked about how the goats struggle with change and being on alert, and then talked about how the cicadas were unnerving because you weren’t used to it 🥰🥰 the sweet nervous systems of all living things
I pray that your house build goes smoothly without severe delays. It's taken us a year to get 45% done with our house build. We have an excellent builder and funding but things happen out of our control. Buckle up and try to enjoy the ride as much as possible but prepare for the bumps and inevitable tears. We've been living off grid in a wall tent (with the NC weather) for a year and half and it's been the hardest thing we've ever done. We don't have running water or electricity yet but I can still water my plants with the tears that come with every delay we have faced!
💜🍀🍀🍀💜
I hope you are blessed soon with running water, and all the blessings of home.
I loved it when the goats were chasing you, calling out "Maaaaum" 😂
You have always been an inspiration to me. I started watching during covid and the first thing I grew was lettuce in a soil bag. I was an urban garden growing mostly in containers and a few raised beds. I have come a long way since then and you have helped me with your videos so very much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world.💛
Do you happen to still have that plastic greenhouse? If so, you could set it up inside the greenhouse. No concern it will blow away since it will be inside. 😉
No I think she gave it away.
Omgoodness Jess...the goats bleating and running after you brought tears to my eyes 😢
Cow paths are formed because they always walk the same path to and from. Such creatures of habit. Our cows would always come in the stantions (5 on the right and 5 on the left) in the same order nightly and on the same side.
I read an article about cicadas being really loud this year 🤗 there are two types emerging simultaneously this year, so there are more and much louder! They only emerge every several years, lay eggs and die. Personally, I love the sound. I grew up in the Midwest and that was the sound of summer for me. There are no cicadas in upstate NY and I have missed that sound for the last 50 years 🥲
We hear cicadas just north of Syracuse, ny generally in August.
@@plantlove008 Binghamton here. Guess I need to move north!
Love the hosts to me it sounded like they were saying mom, mom, wait for us...lol
Thank you for sharing all you do. God bless
Those goats are so cute & trust you so much! The cicadas were interesting! Thanks for sharing & blessings to all🤗🇨🇦
When more and more people started getting into gardening a few years back, I noticed many potting mixes having much more wood in them. The extra wood in the potting mix was draining the nitrogen out of my seedling stunting them and even killing some. I started sifting the potting mix for when I was up potting my seedling and the plants started doing much better. Just something else to look into.
It’s basically like buying a bag of mulch these days! Drives me crazy!
This video is hysterical! Your goats are like spoiled kindergartners!! I laughed my butt off! Good girl training them to be goats!!👍👍
Cicadas make the sound of a hovering alien space ship, or what I imagine such a thing would sound like. Your goats seem a wee bit codependent! 😂 Thanks for sharing.
Oh my goodness, those goats ARE dramatic. The goats running after you is hilarious. It’s amazing how loud the cicadas can get. Pretty crazy. Thank you Jess for sharing.❤️
This is by far the funniest video you have posted 😂 so cute
Your goats are the cutest! And YOU are a wonderful caring goat momma ♥️I loved seeing them running after you today.
Oh Jess, all the goat things!😂 I can so relate right now to all of that! Change one little thing and everyone is a mess 😂 we totally get rushed at the gate, I really need to work on that order thing because they all totally know their names and could come when called. Those three goats though following you just made my day! "Momma! Where are you going?!" 😂 So funny!
I Loved this! Watching those Goats just warmed my Heart!
The cicadas make me homesick for the south. I always found it soothing.
Jess, here in central Illinois we are going to get a double cicada emergence that has not been seen for over 221 years. Embrace those sounds, those beauties arreiate the soil and fertilize the ground. It's a great feat of mother nature.
The goats yelling - Moooooooom!! Wait Moooooooom!! lol
It literally sounds like they are screaming, “ ma, ma, mom, ma, mooooooommmmm, maaaa, mom!”
13m54sec 😂😂😂 I cracked up! This is when they really understood “she’s doing it again, noooooooo!” They all picked up the pace and start running after you yelling.❤
Your goats amuze me. I've never had a goat that was that panicked by change, and I've had goats from all level of abused first homes to pampered living. Every time we get a new goat, it's like being on my farm breathes new life into them and they become the goat they were always ment to be.
Their ears flapping all over as they ran after you! 😂
Thank-you...... I have been fighting my grain fed goats to switch to browsing.... I'm literally trimming trees and bushes to help them for almost a month... they scream and I know the neighbors think I'm killing them. Lol oh and hay they headbutt and push around like it's a toy.
I’m SOOO NOT looking forward to the cicada emergence here in the Midwest! Can’t figure out if that reverberation is creepy or calming!! 😂😂 and oh, the goat drama! 😆🐐just love their “personalities”!💕
I get it Jess, I have to say even my dogs love routine! We don’t watch much TV but our son will join us every night for Jeopardy! When they hear the TV go on the female dog will run to the staircase with a toy in her mouth for him to throw for her in the first few minutes! At the end of the evening when the TV goes off they jump down from the sofa, run to the door to go out then sit and wait for me to open the kennel door to go to bed! I guess we all can be creatures of habit! I start my seedlings in the house and only move my tomatoes and peppers to the sun porch when temperatures are consistently above 50 at night, otherwise just like the dogs they come in to the house at night! Even plants like consistency! We are all learning 🙃! So interesting our cicadas won’t start singing until the warm weather in end of July and I have to watch the dogs because they will eat the dead ones and then get sick! Gross to find legs sticking to their tongues! 😝 Peace and blessings! 🤗
And in regards to the greenhouse seedlings, I remember a video from Charles Dowding that showed the difference between his greenhouse plants and his outdoor plants that were planted at the same time, and the greenhouse ones were definitely slower because he had a wood greenhouse like you, and all those beams just block a little more light than the outdoor plants. so if you have issues because of fluctuating temperatures, they are exacerbated by having a little less light in the greenhouse compared to outside, or other types of greenhouses.
I did not baby my seedlings during cooler temperatures this year like I have in past years,, and I’ve definitely seen them be less healthy, despite using the same greenhouse and the same soil as previous years.
OHHH this strawberries are gorgeous!! You are so ahead of us in weather and your videos make me so excited about our warming weather! (it snowed tonight) :) ❄🍓🇨🇦
I learned at a young age how habitual cows are. We grew up with a small her of cows (40-50 at most), and during different seasons we move them from pasture to pasture and there is sometimes a 1-1.5km distance between pastures and the farm yard so each family member had their standing post to make sure the cows went where they were supposed to go. We only had to do it for a few years and then my dad would just open the gates and the cows know exactly where they are supposed to go at that time of year. My dad can just walk or take the ATV behind or in front of them and close the gate behind them in their new grazing space. They are smarter than I give them credit for (only because I've seem them do some bone headed things too). LOL
Those cicadas are loud. Erie. There were supppsed to be alot of the coming out of the ground afyer 17 yrs or something to that effect. My mind struggles to remember info at times. Listen to those babies. So precious ❤
14:21 the exact same looks I get from my dogs when I leave for work. 🥺🥺🥺 Hang out with 'em a bit and borrow a goat that knows how to goat to show them the ways of free range goating. 🙃
I wish I had a non toxic pesticide strawberry!! Have a Beautiful SUMMER 2024. You the Best Jess. Im having triple bypass surgeryin two weeks. Prayers please..♥️
Those new goats are so much fun!❤️
ALWAYS LOVE THE BOTTLE BABY HAPPY TAILS!!!! 🥰
Goats will naturally follow - that is why they are following you? Goats are never 'herded' they always follow the goatherd. You can take them for walks and they will follow. They are not like other bovines that you can let into a field and they will sort themselves out? Its not an anxiety thing; that is just how they are. Lovely to see them out in the fresh air. Thanks for the vlog, always a joy. x
As you walked toward the gate, I could almost hear the goats yelling "Mom, Mom, don't leave us here. Mom!" lol. I do love your videos. 🤣
Mmmh, I’m so excited for our fresh strawberries this year! 😍
I'm pretty sure you just described a plot to a great children's book. I don't even have Littles anymore, and I would purchase one, lol.
Thank you for clarifying 'flight', for a moment I was very concerned!🤣
They are so scared 😨 poor babies. Hope the goats get acclimated to their new paddocks
I am in stitches about the goats! They’re running after you yelling mom! Mom! Mom!! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
They are bawling for you!
Those poor goats - "Mama don't leave me."
the goats running after you very much gave the feelings of a toddler when you walk away lol "MOOOMMM!! DON'T GO!!" - Which I think is also a great testament to how well you've been treating them :) They trust you to help them
Your goats are hysterical 😂😂😂 Running after you screaming mooooooommmm😂😂
Jess I just love your goats they are so cute, they sounded like they were saying mom all the way to the gate ..
Good morning from East Texas! LOL…the goats running after you and crying just made my morning! Blessings to you …and your goats 🤗
I laughed so hard watching them follow you with your commentary. I had to watch it a second time. LOL
I swear the goats are literally screaming out, "MUUUMMMM!" 🤣
Wow, thank you so much for talking about small plants. I started some saved tomato seeds and they are very small. I was beginning to worry, but you have given me hope that all is well.
The goats said come back come back definitely routine was messed up 😮😂those strawberries looked scrumptious 😊
Oh my goodness, the goat drama queens! I think you may have nailed it with the temperature swing hypothesis. Maybe you and Miah could devise some kind of partition to close off part of the greenhouse to make that part easier to maintain more even temps with less supplemental heat. I'm thinking of those heavy clear plastic strip curtains that you see in some stores and warehouses to keep cool areas cool. Maybe overlapping tarps hanging from the rafters, something along those lines.
Oh my goodness that was so cute. Love how you filmed them running to you. ❤😂
I agree, Jess! My hubby started tomatoes and peppers inside, in a "grow box" he built. The grow box maintained a consistent temperature and timed lighting. And he moved his plants outside as the weather began warming up. I began my tomato and herb/flower seeds in our "greenhouse" (just an 8x8 base with an arch made from cattle panel, covered in 6 mil clear plastic) and only brought them inside when temperatures were supposed to drop below freezing. The night temperatures dropped routinely around 40 degrees (F) and sometimes, even with the door open, the greenhouse would get to 100 degrees. My husband's plants are large and healthy, ready to transplant and mine (started later) look stunted and have been slower-growing. Yes, some of the differences could be the time difference between one planting and the other, but I am seeing much slower growth from my plants. I had an added possible issue with mine, and that is I started my seeds in reused seed trays that I did not wash before filling them with damp soil and planting in them. So. Everything gets washed with soapy hot water once emptied now. (I also had a large number of failure to germinate.) AND we are planning on adding seed mats to our greenhouse next Spring.
I’m so glad I follow you. My first year in a greenhouse, I’m having the exact same issue. I have fried seeds with humidity domes stunted seedlings, over watered, underwatered. Fungus gnats, Aphids …it’s definitely a learning curve. And just when I was about to throw in the towel, your last few videos came out, and has kept me going. Thank You!
It’s the “MAAAAAAAAM” for me 😂
Lol that hilarious. Silly goats
We have a grow closet in our 18'x26' greenhouse. We start seeds in the closet on heat mats beginning in Feb.
Greetings from Central California 😇have you tried electro culture gardening where you put a copper wire into the container and it helps your plants grow. It’s pretty amazing to see growth after three days. Lots of information on the internet. Thanks for sharing your lovely videos!
The goats made my heart break when you walked away. It reminds me of when I used to drop my children off to school/daycare when they were small. They are 25,17,11&9 now and I still feel that way (some times 😂).
The goats!!! 😂 MOM! I'm outside! Oh, the horror!
I thought your strawberries were painted rocks; they look so perfect!
Thats it. Create a smaller, more controlled environment within your larger greenhouse. Control humidity, soil temp and moisture, and ambient temp, all within a smaller tent. Just hang some thick vinyl/ plastic. Roll it down for the early stage, then roll it up out of the way for the rest of the season. Cheaper and easier to manage the climate in the smaller space. You got this. ❤ Edited to add..be sure to put a top on the mini tent. Doesnt have to be tight. Just something to keep in a bit of heat and humidity. Throw some clear platic over the top. OR...have your honey build a mini greenhouse structure inside the larger one, with roll-up sides. You can use it for all kinds of experimental things. 🤗
You are the inspiration to my flower farm. We ordered your sampler coffee box and just received it yesterday. Thank you for being you!
You had a full bowl Strawberries, a little milk and sugar. Yummm
The goats are so funny.😊 The Cicadas make me think of War of the Worlds hahaha they are so loud. 🤣
Chelsea at Little Mountain Ranch in Canada has a set up with heaters and plastic over the shelves to keep them warm in her greenhouse.
I have had ENORMOUS success this year by using sifted Coco Loco potting soil in the air prune trays and domes from Bootstrap Farmer (as well as the Epic 6 cell trays) on heat mats. Everything germinated and grew SOOOO fast and strong! I really think the Coco Loco is the key! Peat moss based starters don't stay as consistently moist which seems to really make a difference. If you can't get Coco Loco, make a mix of coco coir, perlite, compost, worm casting, and vermiculite if you can get it. If you can get all the ingredients listed on the Coco Lico bag, even better, but I really believe that properly buffered coco coir is a big part of it! There are also other coco based potting mixes out there (CANNA Coco Pro Plus is one) but i haven't tried them. The key when making your own is getting the right coir and ratio mix of nutrients,/ammendments. Too much or too little of one thing can throw it off and mixing it really well is also important!
Still you have a great greenhouse that is better than not having anything. Still love watching you with your plants. Have a great day.
We used rolling shelvin units, covered them with foam board. We covered the open side with heavy duty plastic that we could open to check the seedlings and then pin shut. Inside the seed chambers we put grow lights. Above each set of grow lights was a smaller shelf that was automatically warmer because of the heat from the lights. These shelves were used to germinate things that needed more heat and things that would germinate in the dark. Not sure if I have described these very well but inside the greenhouses in winter, these worked very well for seed starting.
Have you maybe considered installing a ceiling fan? It might help push the heat from the top of the greenhouse and help keep it a consistent temperature inside. Just a thought…
Have you thought about using hot water pipes on the under side of the shelf? I’ve seen a few bigger green houses that circulate hot water through for the extra heat.
I think your temperature fluctuation theory is a good one. I start my seeds inside under lights at 70 degrees, then they move to the garage under lights (55-60 degrees at night), and then out to the greenhouse when the night time temps get above 50 or so. I started my tomatoes March the 1st, and they are now 8-12 inches tall and stocky. Ready to go into the ground next week!
Yes Jess a green house within a green house! I do think that the heat mats make the most difference though. My seedlings are stunned as well. My green house is not built well has lots of gaps and a super high ceiling. I did have my shelf wrapped in extra green house material. The one thing I would say is that it didn't seem to be getting enough light through two barriers. Mind you the person who put in my greenhouse put it in the shade of a large tree and the house 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️. Don't worry it's not just you struggling with seedlings!
I really love watching your videos && taking inspiration from your garden. Hubby always knows when its garden time cause your videos are on repeat! LOL.
Jess another idea would be you could use the little greenhouse you had on the inside of the large greenhouse and you could even use a little heater inside the small one to keep temps at a consistent temp. I have one of the 4 tiered greenhouses inside my sewing room I use every spring for my seeding. I have heated mats etc. and it works really really well that way. You might not even have to have a heater inside the small one but I think I would since it's outdoors. Wouldn't take a very big heater just to heat that small of an area either. I hope it works out well for you next spring whatever you decide on.
I smell the sun on those chamomile plants from here 😍
The goats are hilarious with their drama!! 😂 I am having the same problems but my seedlings are outdoors. With that same fluctuations in temps. So I agree!!
I am sitting in my car with it running and I had to shut it down because I thought something was wrong ... Nope! Cicadas ... that sound is crazy!!
I can so relate to the plight of changing a goat routine. Never change anything or it's chaos
I learned that too now I have a small greenhouse inside my larger greenhouse. And use a bucket with a fish tank heater to keep the temp up. No more issues
I grew up on a farm, had Nubian goats and have bottle fed several babies. I trained them, when they were old enough, to drink their milk from a bucket. Allow them to suck on your fingers and slowly lower your hand into the bucket of milk. They will drink the milk.
I love all of the livestock and chickens you have. I miss my goats and horses.
Thank you for sharing. Blessings.
Chelsea at Little Mountain Ranch shows her greenhouse with heaters and plastic covers during out fickle Canadian spring. Sounds like you are on the same track!
That's funny, the goats running after you screaming, come back! :)
I agree with you Jess. I start my tomatoes in the house and move them to the greenhouse and they do well.
My seedlings have been the same this year! Some three times the size of others even with the same treatment and amount of time. Seems to be by varieties
It’s definitely the swing in temperatures. It knocks them back kind of like 2 steps forward 1 step back ❤🇬🇧
You were talking about cows being a prey animal and how the have a strong flight or fight instinct and it reminded me of Flo and “When cows fly” lol 😆 😂
I sipped my first cup of black coffee ever while watching this. Beulah's Guatemala is so lovely, I didn't want to mask any of its notes!
