Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

When I bought my first home, the very first night I was on the back porch crying happy tears saying “We own stars!”😂. I’d never lived where it was dark enough to see stars so I was overjoyed!
Isn’t it amazing!! We travelled across the country 4 times back and forth to California and the stars up in the mountains out there are beautiful!! We saw comets sometimes also.
Was looking up at them last night. It never gets old.
On my last “girls’ trip” with my daughter and granddaughters, we used the sunroof to look at the moon and stars. So beautiful!
I love this. My nephews come visit me in the summer in middle America and they always comment on seeing stars at night and the screaming bugs (cicadas). lol 😂
I'm so excited, I found a rather "cheap" house in the country that I'm going to look at tomorrow! 🎉 I'm a single mom of 3 who yearns to live this lifestyle 🥺💕 I became a school bus driver to have mid days and summers/holidays and weekends off to be more present in my kids lives, I pray that God will help me through this season and allow me to have this house that sits on about 4 acres! ❤❤❤
Like a fence makes good neighbors…screen doors make good cats!! Lol
My cat has shredded every screen in my house.
I would recommend black hardware cloth in the places the screen would go. 1/4 inch or so would do the trick. Black because it doesn't reflect light the same way the silver does, and therefore makes it easier to see though.
My cat ripped my screen so badly😅
I was going to suggest a screen door too! Cat person here. I totally get it. LOL
Oh Jess. When you say Happy Birthday Lil guys to your seedlings, I love it and smile. So when one of mine breaks soil, you have me saying Happy Birthday Lil one.
Why thank you for providing our geese with a good place to stop before coming back home!! 🇨🇦 😊
you might want to think about building a screen door to keep the cats out.❤😊
I was thinking the same thing!
Thank you ..thank you. I said that because you have a beautiful soul that shares such beautiful memories in such a needed time with so much spinning about.
Think about a screen door for greenhouse.🐞🐞😊😊🐞
The rooster was so picturesque! It’s like he was a supermodel posing for us! Love it!😍
That rooster on that fence would make a BEAUTIFUL PHOTO!
Have you thought of Nut trees? Almonds, walnut, chestnut, pecan, etc...
My husband and I bought our first (and hopefully longterm) farmhouse last year on family property. It all happened very quickly and out of unfortunate circumstances, so I didn’t have my big cry of disbelief of “oh my goodness we own this beautiful house”. My farmhouse is almost 200 years old and needs lots of work, and it can be extremely overwhelming with our dwindling finances. But on those beautiful sunny days, when all the light hits the windows just right, I feel so grateful to have this place to live and a forever project to work on. It’s all about the mindset and finding the joy and beauty in the little things. Thank you for sharing such positivity amongst your videos, you truly inspire me and help me change my mindset. 🙂
The early morning on your farm I really enjoy. Love the geese and all the frogs. It’s also so good to see you with the goats again. A lovely morning on the farm. Thank you Jess for sharing.❤️✝️🙏
That is the prettiest rooster I have ever seen
I live in the Netherlands and because of you, I started Okra……and they sprouted!!!! Never grown them, never ate them. I am so exited!
I've walked the dirt down on my property looking for seedlings so I'm in love seeing anyone else's job
We rescued an orphaned Canada goose gosling during all our wild fire stuff this past summer. She flew away with a flock in the fall. She responds to ducky, maybe we'll get lucky and you have her on your pond. We are hoping she comes back this year
Congrats on the Nick Freitas channel shout out.Your definitely doing God's work continuously.
When we lived in upstate NY, there was a large cornfield across the street and we frequently had Canadian geese. But one year, a large flock of snow geese came in - they were breathtaking, so beautiful especially when they all took flight. We felt very blessed to have seen that, they weren't around for very long. And yes, Mary Oliver, she is my favorite. If you are drawn to nature, especially, her work will just speak to you in a very special way. How many times have her words brought me to tears, not because what she writes is necessarily sad, but just because it is so spiritual and so true and it touches the soul.
The Snow Geese bless me every year! I have a video on my phone of them against a beautiful blue sky from 2015! Priceless 💙
The Canadian Goose, its like a big hug from your friends in Canada. Me included.
Nanking cherrys are really beautiful little trees/shrubs. The fruit is very tasty, but more seed than fruit. Probably good for juice or jelly.
Just planted one! There are cherry trees and plums nearby, so hopefully they can cross pollinate. Also planted some gooseberry, aronia, and blueberry!
Nanking cherries make Excellent juice & jelly! One of our favourites. Also, it is very good warmed with mulling spices. The juice can also be mixed with gelatin for cherry jello.
They make yummy jelly! The birds like them too.
Nick sent me. I am intermedate at best so im so thankful to Nick for shouting you out! Thanks for what you do!
Listen to all the sounds of the country. Sure beats the noise of cities.
17:00 - he’s so handsome! His plumage is so bright and beautiful.
The baby with his new mom is really precious. ❤
I’d love to hear your growing tips and the ways you eat/prepare ground cherries. It’s my first year growing them (Aunt Molly’s variety) and I’m excited!
Listening to this as I scrub windows on my new 1940s cottage house on my new farm! We moved into a mess. At the end of the day I'm exhausted and fall asleep as soon as I hit the pillow( that's never happened). Waking up to my progress is the best! The mornings and golden hours are my favorite times. Well the night too when we get to look at our stars.
There’s nothing like a beautiful morning in South Carolina!!!!
I live “down the road” from y’all ❤️🌹❤️
I was in IRMO until June of last year; now I’m a bit farther away in Summerville.
We've already seen Canadian geese, trumpeter swans, whooping crane.😊I absolutely love seeing them fly over. My chickens scattered every time we see them fly over. I thought it was a little early for them to be here in Michigan.
The green fields are so refreshing to my winter eyes.
That Rooster is so gorgeous with it's yellow gold feathers.
I left this comment too lol. He’s so handsome!
Jess, I remember your first videos and I recall a Mama who rather be in the garden than in the kitchen. 😊
Your goat story reminded me of a friend who had a Great Dane named Hank who was a total mama’s boy. She would bathe him in the standing shower and he would be a perfect angel for her (Hank weighed more than she did!). One time she asked her husband to give Hank a shower, and the dog freaked out. Absolutely refused to cooperate, ran and hid (as much as a Great Dane can!). Mama had to do it!
Happy Day Light Savings time weekend!🤗🌱🍀🌞🌻💐
Nick Freitas recommended so here I am!!!!!! New subscriber!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
I was just hoping for a video from you today!! ❤️
Mushrooms and asparagus sauteed with garlic make a great side dish. That's one of my favorite ways to use a little bit of asparagus. ❤
I thought my asparagus was done, but they’re branching out and making more! 🥰 I also picked a handful today, but only 2 made it inside lol.
I can relate to your tears on the front porch! We bought a mess of a house and a mess of a property as well and I have cried SOO many tears of gratitude ❤ dreams fulfilled is a tree of life for sure
Jess I wash asparagus and toss in the freezer when it’s just a few, then make a batch of asparagus soup and can it. Add milk when you heat it up. I bet it would be good with your goat milk and even a little goat cheese on top 😊
The first time I had a garden it wasn't super productive. I went out one day and found a huge amount of cucumbers. My husband was on the tractor in the field and I hollered for him several times. I was straight up ugly crying, lol. He jumped off the tractor and came running to me very concerned and I said, " I grew cucumbers." He told me I did a good job and went back to the tractor. Of course I was still enamored by the cucumbers and cried for a long time. Neither of us will ever forget that moment.
Bless you Chad & family. It's been an honor to watch you for the beginning. Also, watch your family start their channels. Prayers for continuing growth.❤
I love to look at the farm. Thank you. Can't wait to see cottage garden in full bloom. Love geese. We just started getting some. Take care. My sister gets blisters from cow milk
I just got a new tiny puppy and every night we watch Jess. The puppy falls asleep in my arm. Last night I fell asleep with out watching your video and Torino kept me up most of the night. I started your video and she lay right down and went to sleep lol
You can add a moscito screen door to the greenhouse to get wind in but keep cats out
Love Mary Oliver....what a gift!!
❤❤❤ I love hearing the frogs serenade you ❤❤❤
Love that sound of the geese😊
Wow!!! What a beautiful Rooster!!!😮 He is so magnificent.
We have Nanking Cherry Jess. We are in the creep stage but got several cherries last year and I was just snacking on them in the garden. Really enjoyable!
I slog through horse mud (disgusting). I always pray I don’t fall, one of the horses is to loving. It would never stop me from loving the process. I loved your morning 😊❤
Maybe you can use a screen door or door with chicken wire instead of screen, for greenhouse to keep kitties out. You can use it behind or in front of main door.
How sweet. She'll be a great mom to her own kid. And, perhaps the other ladies will learn from her and become great moms as well. ❤
Hi! Jessica
I hope that in your homes plan there’s a large are to sit on a front porch so you can look out at your new property. God has blessed you immensely.
I'v e never had goat cheese I enjoyed! Its always tastes like a goat
First found you through your Farmer's table bread making video. Then I found one of your gardening videos and couldn't figure out where I had seen you on youtube before, then I realized both these amazing channels are yours! Subbed to both and love your content!
😊Hey Jess, I'm loving learning about goats with you. Going to check out Mary Oliver. So exciting...new goats, new house, new coffee/tea, new recipes on FT. Yesterday I had a crack at yr biscuit/scone (Aussie here) recipe n they were the best I've ever made. Think it was the folding... producing the layering/flakeyness...little handling n v hot oven. Loving yr platforms and our Aussie Chrissies' platform. I live v close to where she lived on the Sunshine Coast. I feel like I've inherited 2 new families.❤❤ I bless you 😊
When we moved to NY from California it was the end of August. I remember a few weeks later talking to my husband and then on hearing the geese heading South yelled “they’re coming”! Not being from the East Coast he had no idea what I was talking about! I ran out into the yard and just was so excited as they landed in the freshly cut corn across the road! Great memories of country life! Oh yes and hearing the Spring Peepers for the first time! 🤗😁
Guess it’s time to get a good screen door for the greenhouse! 🤣 🐈
Precious kitties can do quite a job.
My precious little kitty would get on a side table and calmly, item by item, take her little paw and bat them off the table and watch them fall to the floor. Till the whole table was cleared. Then would lay on it and go to sleep.
It is good to see you feeling better.
I love Mary Oliver, and she is so apt so often! I love her philosophy on writing poetry as well, simplicity! That is a great color for you, by the way, kind of makes you glow, Jess.
Oh my goodness, what a MAGNIFICENT rooster! 😂
That line of the poem brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for sharing...I'll have to take a look at her work. 🙂
Bermuda is also called "Devil Grass" for a good reason. That is what my late Mother who would be well over 100 now if she'd lived, used to call Bermuda Grass. Our lawn here in the Mojave Desert is Bermuda planted by a former owner. Tough to eradicate without chemicals because it runs above, below ground with stolons that resemble tough cord, and also have annual seeds. Tough stuff!
Mary Oliver is my favorite poet. My favorite book of hers is called Dog Songs. You should buy it if you don’t have it.
“Because of the dog’s joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”
I’ve been battling rashes on my hands and wrists since Summer. I thought it was the goats but didn’t with gloves or when I dried up the goats. Recently I switched from the Castile soap I’ve been using for years to unscented goats milk soap and it all cleared up! Praying your body regulates quickly ❤
Jess make a rustic wood screen doors for the green house to keep the cats out.
We’re in North Carolina and I wish we had foggy mornings here, like you have. It’s so beautiful and magical looking where you’re at💕
Can we talk about how cute your hair looks? And how cute that cheerful yellow sweatshirt is?
Seriously so cool that instinct kicks in. 21:45
You reminded me of the first day I saw your blogs today for some reason which was very cute xxx
You can send those geese home 😂 I'm tired of winter! Bring on spring!
I raise your holy terror. My holy terror dragged a dead squirrel into my greenhouse this morning. Never a dull moment 😂
Hey Jess, for the greenhouse dilemma and the cat , we had to put one of those sliding screen doors in with a metal guard on the bottom to keep the cats and critters out. That way we could leave the doors open 😍
This is exciting. Usually when things happen there birds, weather, ect. I get it two weeks later here in Canada. I always love hearing the geese, it means Springs is here! 😍💚
sending up some prayers for you that you do level out and can enjoy your goats and all that comes with them to the fullest!
Yeah spring!!!!
We retired & moved to our 5 acre forever home five years ago. The first bushes I planted in our orchard was 3 Nanking Cherries. They are now 5-6 feet tall. Last year (year 4) was its first year with a good amount of fruit. I made jelly that was delicious & canned a few pints for pie. They are not easy to pit because they are mostly all pit, But they are very hardy & did well the past few years with our severe drought.
Hello sweet Jess
I love that your goats are so loving. Claire is a sweet soul for a the sweet soul in you. ❤️. It’s a very old remedy but appears to be coming back.
I’ve been using castor oil on my skin for some inflammatory issues. I’m still new to it only a few weeks. I have heard many sing their praise to this very old grandmas remedy. Maybe something to look into for your skin. I hope it helps.
I’m still waiting in my classroom but I so hope to have my own beautiful farm with sweet loving goats too. I enjoy learning from you. Thank you for being you. Be Blessed. 🙏❤️
I'm jealous, I want frogs! 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸😎
We can’t have a rooster where we are right now. And I sure do miss watching one!
You will love the eucalyptus, it does very well in the Carolinas
The geese are a true treasure!
Nice morning, as always enjoy your videos 😊
Nick Freitas gave y’all an amazing shout out! Virginia Rep
Comfrey in the right context makes a great rhizomatic block. So, my foundation of my hedgrerows are actually long lines of comfrey to block bremuda and crab grass from creeping into my yard from my neighbors.
A handful of asparagus is awesome for breakfast. Wrap each spear with bacon and broil or bake and dip into soft boiled eggs. My asparagus won't be up for at least another month...I can hardly wait😊
I loved my garden kitty but, they can be mischievous. Maybe you could add a screen door to your green house for more ventilation & less mischief form your kitty. ~ P.S. The story of ... the morning on your first farm ...never gets old!
Love this weather
Jess, you need some of those fancy long opera gloves so you can protect your arms in style! 😁 Perhaps a tasteful tiara as well?
Gosh I so want a beautiful rooster!!! Nankings r beautiful, group em. It’s so funny listening to all the goose loving. Worked at the zoo, geese & peacocks roamed at leisure & r disgusting & mean in my book. Very territorial 😂
Your pasture looks like the dawn scene from pride and prejudice and I can’t stand how jelly I am.
We have wild geese every year at our pond. Two years ago, they actually made a nest there and had 6 babies. I normally have 3 families show up. They go between 4 ponds around here.
They hang out and sleep in the fields and in the large lake near the house. Ducks hang out in the lake, and in the creek and Ohio river that snakes around the property.
Geese didn't seem to stop showing up this year!
Your joy and appreciation for all you’ve received and worked for is such a gift to witness. Thank you for sharing about the wild geese and your journey ❤
You could get some of those cute gardeners arm protection sleeves. Weed’em and Reap was breaking out from contact with her goats too
7:44 can you add a screen door on the main door? That way you can leave the main door open for ventilation? 😊
You make my morning 😍
We've grown our plants from seeds every year since COVID. Our season of life changed this year. I hope next year to be back to seedlings. I sure miss it.
Jess in central Alberta I have grown Nan King Cherry 🍒 shrubs and they were so fragrant when they bloomed, but then came the cherries. The first few years the cherries didn’t get real large but after that they did. You can make very delicious cherry jelly that is so delicious on toast. You can also can or freeze juice for drinking etc. i grew too really love these bushes for all that you can make with them. Now that you have a freeze dryer you could remove the pit and dry these cherries for eating or baking. They would be lovely even in cookies. The boys would enjoy these for sure. Enjoy your blossoms as the aroma is so intoxicating.
I have a pond on my property and I love narrating the Goose drama 😂
Love Nanking Cherry! Discovered them in Montana. Very prolific and tiny, tiny - pea-sized. I juiced them and made jelly from them. I have one which is blossoming this year and it is only 1 'stick'. But I planted out 2 more this year. The bushes in Montana were about 5 feet tall and around. Obviously, since they grow in Montana, you don't have to worry about frost or freezing weather. My youngest daughter says this is her favorite jelly.
Get one of those magnet screens to put on your greenhouse doors. It works great and keeps my cat from escaping. Would keep your cat out.
