Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

I swear you live in heaven! I’d give anything to have gardens like you have…..we have less than 3 acres…..and most is pine trees. But I’m doing all I can to have a good garden this year. Last year was horrible…..grazon hit my plants and I got NOTHING! This year, I’m starting everything early and praying I can have some success! I’m doing all I can do…..but I’m only one 74 year old woman. I have tons of things planted and under grow lights….I’m praying I get enough food to preserve for the year. Working hard….doing my best! I’d give anything to have the resources you have to grow all I need. But I’m happy for all I CAN grow…..and grateful to you and others for the encouragement and help we all need! Thank you Jess…..I love you and your family! You’re a treasure! ❤❤❤

You go girl, I am 67 years old and my only regret is I didn't start sooner. I will say I have several raised beds and those help so very much. I retired last year after over 30 years of healthcare and I love it. I will say that people in the gardening world regardless of age love helping each other. I love the fact that somebody with dreadlocks or a person on a walker are one when it comes to the love of gardening.

@debichats8634- Hello from our working farm in Central ⛵⛵ Lakes New Hampshire. I too am 74 years young and no longer beat myself up on my growing challenges. We have a 350 acre farm, but it it not primarily agricultural- grass fed beef/hay/ logging. Our gardens are scattered near the main farm house and around our woodland cottage at the base of the farm. I have discovered that I now only want to dedicate a percentage of my time to gardening. This year holds art lessons and sewing lessons, along with other endeavors. We also support neighboring farms and farmer's markets by purchasing fruits and vegetables that I either did not grow or like you, I had crop failure. I would like to build a larger green house. Our mini green house as helped. This year I am into herbs and flowers that have always done well, with a few of my favorite vegetables in the woodland garden. Our Hemlocks need to be cut back to allow for more sun and air flow. Best of luck to you! ~ Diane

Yep I'm about to turn 53 and I just wish I would have raised my kids like this. This is all for me because I'm by myself now and post divorce and this is my dream!! I'm in a neighborhood in Ohio with a TEENIE 1k sqft space, but I'm selling this property soon and I'm moving back down south very close to where R&R is! My family is all there. So excited to get a few acres! Hopefully

I’ll be 64 this year. I’ve only been gardening for around 6 years now. I have 6 raised beds that are 8x4, several grow bags and a couple of Greenstalks. I too wish I had more land to garden on.

Don't worry Jess... I was part of a Farmer's Market start-up as a vendor (baked goods) and there were only 5 of us (vendors) in the beginning for a while. No, we didn't make a ton of money at first but the comradery and fun time we all had just buying from each other/bartering and getting to chat each week about what it was like being a small business or farmer was amazing. That market grew to be so large we had to move to a bigger location eventually and we all made really solid money... but I missed the old days where it was just a few of us. Your Market will be great. Enjoy the start of it though, you'll miss it before you know it

I had to giggle when you talked about laying on the grass and soaking up the sunshine. We lived in Alaska for 15 years when our children were young. We took vacation in mid winter to California to go to Disneyland. When we got to the hotel, they had a nice green lawn, and our kids went nuts. They were rolling around in the grass doing somersaults and just laying around soaking up the sunshine. I’m sure most of the people there thought they were a little crazy. Lol They acted like they had never seen grass before.

I do it almost the same way. I have a 40-cell seed starting tray and this year I put about 100 seeds in it, maybe more. I have about 34 spots in the garden, but I like starting lots of extras in case of a freeze and also to give away. The 40-cell tray is nice and compact to fit under one LED growlight.

I'm growing pink bumblebee tomatoes in a hydroponics setup indoors right now. I started them from seeds 29 days ago and they are already look like small bushy trees. I'm just blown away by how well they are doing. They are about 10 inches tall and bushed out just as wide. I live in the Midwest. Winters are boring. Ice fishing was garbage this year. It's a fun hobby. I can't wait till I have some land. All I want is a long driveway and a nice greenhouse. Until then, I live vicariously through videos like this one. Thanks for that.

Just started my tomatoes today here in central NY and among them are my last 3 seeds of purple bumblebee. I started them in soil last year but grew them out in Kratky hydroponic tubs outdoors. They were tomato bearing fools, bearing tons of tasty bumblebees right up til frost. Will continue to do tomatoes, eggplants and some peppers in hydroponics again this year. Very prolific method with little overhead.

@@vonniemerriam974 wow thanks for the reply. This is my first year doing hydroponics. I'm really excited and it's going so well. I struggled with soil gnats last year, growing indoors so I said goodbye to soil and haven't looked back. I've done a lot of research and so far everything I have planted is just growing like crazy. I have limited space, but I'm growing tomatoes, peppers, basil, oregano, cilantro, nasturtiums, caladiums and a few other randoms.

@@heraclitus6100 I started with the Kratky method indoors first time last year. Everything I used was cheap or recycled. Only $ was for the Masterblend and a bag of perlite, but that was actually for when I transplanted outdoors. Hit on Mike Van Duzee here on YT who shows how to do it as cheaply as possible. Was awesome having fresh lettuce in January! My starts are almost ready to transplant into my indoor totes so I can be eating fresh before I even get my other stuff in the ground out back. Had great success outdoors with tomatoes and eggplants. This year I'm expanding to some peppers outdoors too.

That way you could use those to separate out and fill in any pots that didn't germinate, but you don't have to separate and repot for hours and hours. Just an idea :) a bit of both systems

Try a static rose head on a solid rod extension on a brass valve for your garden hose. Add a brass quick-connect between the valve and rod for fast access to a full stream of water. Additional quick-connects can be attached to other hose heads and sprinklers for a wider variety of options than a mechanical sprayer can offer!
My experience with spray nozzles is that the more moving parts the quicker and more catastrophically they fail.
Solid brass is forever. Brass costs twice as much as plastic, but you'll buy three or more plastic parts before finally switching to brass. The advice given to me by a more experienced gardener was to just invest in quality tools upfront. And I managed to thrift a grip of brass quick-connects from a garage sale!
My beat-up aluminum rosehead hose attachment functions better than any mechanical equivalent and has lasted more than a decade, possibly multiple since it wasn't purchased by me. And I'm just as rough on my tools as anyone has the right to be!

I was doubly blessed this morning. Finished the parts of my workout that are hard and necessary but not necessarily fun and got to see this great video. So reward at the same time! 😊

I did the same thing today. I told myself if I separate the tomatoes I can start a tray of lavender. LOL It worked!

We plant almost everything deep. Doesn't seem to hurt anything that we have noticed, just makes them a little sturdier.

This is my third year for my asparagus patch, so I'll be picking a good amount this year. Decided this year to stop planting novelty crops and concentrate on crops for preserving. Doubling broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes and carrots. Also going to grow Brussels Sprouts for the first time. Tomatoes will be grown for some fresh eating and preserving, but I'm cutting back because I want to grow more of the things mentioned above. Anxious to get the growing season going and seeing what works for me and my family. Love your channel Jess. ❤️

I live in a short season zone. So the seed starting period is short and non flexible. I actually put reminders on my phone calendar when I must start certain seeds.
I totally bribe myself to do garden tasks that must be done with tasks I'm really excited to do.
I love listening to you. I always learn something.

I love all parts of the seed starting process, even up potting the tomatoes and peppers. My push part is the weeding and such because of my back and knees. This year, I got some Vego raised beds that are 17 inches tall and plan to make all my garden out of them as I can afford to add to them. I can sit on my little cart, and it is at the perfect level for me to work in the beds. I'm itching now to go and separate some more tomatoes. LOL

Jess. I lift my seedlings with a plastic chopstick. One end very pointed and slender, the other thicker. Works great as a dibble, too.

I feel you. Separating seedlings stinks. I start mine the same way. Did that today, I'm small scale home growing. But finding the heat and lights is a huge thing. Peppers , basil , tomatoes, broccoli are my things needed to be started inside. I'm in PA small window of growing. I seeded arugula and cilantro out side a few days ago, we are getting snow tonight and they are sprouted up. They will be alright. love you and all you share. Sometimes we just try and if it works it does, if not start over. I love listening to you easy to ear and listen unlike other channels ,I'll be like I can't do this. Happy spring and up potting plants.

That marker idea is genius! Wish I had thought of it when I was working at a nursery years ago! Apparently the soil was drying my hands out, and I was getting really really bad excama, nothing worked to fix it, gloves didn't help. But that market! Oh my!

Jess my mom always said the big thick asparagus are the male stalks and the thinner pencil size are the female that will produce the berries to go to seed. We also pick usually to the first of June in NE Missouri.

I don’t grow near as many tomatoes as you. I probably only have 35 this year but I absolutely love the 32 pod bootstrap farmer trays! I got them for Christmas and they’re a game changer for me! I have 5 and started everything in them with no need to up pot! I have a ton of volunteer tomatoes that came up in pots. I have no clue what kind they are so now I’m just sticking those in any random place I can find! 😂
