For as basic or confusing as Johto's badges are, I wanted to take a moment to nerd out about the hidden genius of the Mineral Badge. Look at Jasmine's badge. Now look at Brock's badge. It's a polished down Boulder Badge. Brock uses Onix. Jasmine uses Steelix. There's even an npc in the lighthouse who brings up how she used to be a rock type leader before the advent of steel types. It's a good example of Johto's theme of times moving forward and evolving.
A theory I read recently is how Jasmine only has Steelix and a few magnemite. Magnemite are found just before Olivine and have a low chance of holding metal coat, so she probably caught a couple and found a metal coat and evolved her Onix entirely by accident

For the Rainbow Badge, it is because Celadon City's Japanese name is Tamamushi, which comes from the coloration of jewel beetles that live in Asia. These beetles have shells that appear green when looked at directly, but when viewed at other angles will appear rainbow-like due to light reflection. The Earth Badge from Viridian is referred to as the "Green Badge" in the Japanese versions of the game. It doesn't really effect that much in the first generation, but consider that your rival was originally named Green before the version names were changed for international release. So in the Japanese versions of Gold, Silver, and Crystal you are getting the Green Badge from Green. Well played, Game Freak.
4:46 You dont need to go out of your way to explain Kogas and Sabrinas Badges. Due to a localization error, the names of the Soul Badge and the Swamp Badge were swapped in the US versions of Pokémon Red and Blue. The US version also serves as the basis for the other languages. This error was also adopted in later media to avoid confusion.
Honestly the Galar Badges get a pass for me because it feels like it’s a unification theme. Like all of them together represent the League and unlocks the final challenge Paldea… feels like Geeta or someone else standardized it

I believe the reason for the most recen two generations of gym badges being "Uninspired" being the corperasation of the gym challenge over all! In Galar almost each Gym was a carbon copy stadium build by the rose coorperation (or the league) and in Paldea its heavily implied that each gymleader is just employed by Gita who is the chairwomen of that league. the Gym leaders and gyms themselves have become easily replacable (paldea doesnt even have proper stadiums just designated open spaces and a company branch building) Looking at the designs throughout the generations you can see an evolution to the pokemon league anś a corperate entity: In the first 3 Generations each gym could be a place that has been there even before a proper league was established the gyms having their own unique historic badges that need to be collected to enter the new league. in gen 4 and 5 we see that the badges now all share a thematic theme, roundish with silver borders in sinnho and long with gold borders in Unova, possibly a result of the league having taken over badge production causing theam to look like a proper set, perhaps the designs are still co-made by the respective gym leaders as well. In Kalos i believe their badges are just more Detailed because each Gymleader was allowed to design their own badge or they are modernizations of culturally important badges from the past. Alola being culturally different from the other reagions still has to establish their gyms and league but they have made an effort to modernize their traditional islande challenges as a stamp card attraction. Now back to the new games, I really believe here the Pokemon Gyms have lost most of their history in favor of being a sport competistion, with the Galar Gym Challange literally being a reoccuring Football tournament and in Paldea it just being kinda there for students of the big pokemon academy? You can complain about how gamefreak lost inspiration sure but i believe it should not be missed that the Badge designs becoming bland is spelling out another subtle narrative of how in the Pokemon Universe Gyms and the Pokemon league have changed over time. I think thats a very interesting aspect to it that should be pointed out aswell
I also want to add the fact Gamefreak now pushing a new mainline game must be release every around 3/4 years might be the reason why the designer team cant explore as much as they can now , it’s just what I think after reading your comment. Does Alola , Galar & Paldea even has an inspiration name for their city?
@@Lemonberrys For Alola, do you mean the islands themselves (Melemele, Akala, Ula'Ula, and Poni) or the main cities (Hau'oli, Konikoni, and Malie)? Poni Island doesn't have a city so I didn't add it to the city list. Anywho, they do have names that have meaning. The most easily explained ones are the island names because they're based off colors in Hawaiian: yellow, pink, red, and purple respectively. It's been a few years so I currently don't remember the further details (as I believe each island is supposed to represent an island in Hawaii and it's official color) but they do have deeper meanings.

The badge literally represents his Japanese name, Sakaki. It also fits with Viridian's name in both languages - viridian is a shade of green, and Tokiwa (the Japanese name) is a type of evergreen.

Vermillion city’s badge looks like a sun because it’s mentioned that the port is a good place to watch sunsets, which are also the same color as the name :-)
Lt. Surge’s badge might actually be a reference to Vermillion City’s slogan: “The Port of Exquisite Sunsets”. That’s why it’s shaped like the sun. The same goes for Erica’s Rainbow Badge, since Celadon City’s slogan is quite literally: “City of Rainbow Dreams”.

As boring as the Paldea badges are, their uniformity is the most realistic portrayal of what real world organizations often like to do to make things "cohesive" and "on-brand". Do I think that aspect was intentional? No, but it's there.
If we ever have a game were the gym leadera are all multi typed, I have a few ideas for badges. * Park Badge - For a gym leader who uses early route Pokemon * Music Badge - For a gym leader who specializes in sound based Pokemon * Storm Badge - Gym leader specializes in Electric, Flying, and maybe also Water type * Myth Badge - Gym leader uses Dragon and Fairy type Pokemon * Beast badge - Gym leader uses Pokemon in the Monster egg group. * Toolbox Badge. - For a gym leader using object based Pokemon. * Rarity Badge - Gym leader uses hard to find Pokemon such as starter Pokemon for example * Tank Badge - Gym Leader uses Pokemon with High defense.
Note about the Rain badge: It kinda looks like Milotic's scales! As shown in the anime, Feebas have a special pink-blue scale when they're ready to evolve, hence why the odd detailed part on the badge and the general color palette. Though that's just my speculation xd

when i was a kid i thought "Zephyr sounds so cool" so i looked it up, in a dictionary since i didn't have 24/7 access to the computer let alone the internet at the time.
Another thing about Roxy's Toxic Badge: the little protrusion coming off the top bubble that you said mimic crossed bones for deadly poison... that could also be interpreted as popping motion lines, as the bubbles in the poisoned animation rise and pop!
I feel like clemont’s badge is more a nod towards his inventing, with the lines/lightning bolts coming out of a pinpoint dot, almost like an explosion, which most of his inventions result in, and like how Luminos city is the center of kalos, and also where a large power plant is located, so the bolt lines could represent power lines, and the piwer being supplied to the rest of the region
Paldea may have basic badge designs, but it's the photos that are more important, and the fact there are technically 18 "badges", one task of every type whether it be Gym, Team Star, or Titan... the photos are to mark story completion the same way traditional badges used to, similar to Alola's stamps
Apparently a lot of source materials actually make the switch between the Marsh and Soul badges, which makes a bit of sense. Like, Soul seems a lot more Psychic-y(Fighting too, if we count the previous gym) and Marsh seems a bit more in theme with the whole poison-y gym and fits with the Safari Zone imo. But I do really like your correlation between the Soul Badge and Fuchsia! Great video!
In defense of the Gen 9 badges…. What the hell are they gonna do to even name the badges??? Like, you already have beetle, hive, and insect badges, might as well just call it the bug badge. Like sure, you could do like the moth or butterfly badge, but then that’s just redundant. I personally like the Gen 9 badges for their simplicity, and as someone else in the comments pointed out, the real badges of Gen 9 are the unique photos you take with each leader.
Ford Roxy's toxic badge, it reminds me either one of two things. 1st: stereos, whitch plays her music to her audience ota 2nd: it's a Garbodos hand. She used Garbodor in The series, so IT also fits on My opinion.
I can at least give Galar some props as the symbols on the badges aren’t carbon copies of the type logos; some even look relatively cool, like the Dragon badge. There are still ones that look dumb and they probably should’ve just printed the gym logo on them, but it’s still better than just reusing the typing logos
I still can't understand the thought process behind giving each of the galar gyms a logo and not making that the gym badges, instead of the those basic ones.
Zephyr is the kind of word you hear as a kid that you think is so cool and immediately use around school but nobody you know has ever heard of it and you don’t know what it means when they ask so you just kinda forget about it until random poketubers offhandedly mention it

You know mineral badge does make sense when connecting it to Jasmine. An NPC says that Jasmine was originally a Rock type trainer before changing to use the newly discovered Steel type. Not only would it make sense to say Jasmine just didn’t change her badge when changing her type, but the mineral to metal process reflects her change from Rock to Steel.
20:50 - I find it funny that the Mineral Badge makes you think of rock, because Jasmine used to be a Rock-Type Gym Leader before, when her Steelix was an Onix
In defense of Galar, gyms and gym leaders can be switched out kinda on the regular. If the badges looked too much like the previous leaders, then when they change hands, sometimes types, now that new leader has to design a whole new badge and anyone who completed the league before that now has an "unofficial" older set. In "defense" of Paldea, the league is less of a "here's a unique trophie for completing our gym" and more "this is going on your permanent record" kind of thing. The badges need to be uniform across all types because it is easier for a school to manage them, like grades on tests. Plus, they have a constant intake of students all trying for the league, so having easily mass-produced badges probably saves on costs (ironic). I kinda like that Team Star, as an act of rebellion, added extra flare to these other badges that clearly look like they were once produced by the school but were discontinued. Casted aside, either to make way for better gym leaders or relics of gym types that are no longer being considered, thus limiting the students in a way. It's a fun layer to consider for the whole Team Star story.
I might be a little late, but regarding the Cobble Badge at 35:28, I've always seen it as two arms going in opposite directions of each other to hit whoever's throwing the punch. The long rectangle is an arm, then the square is the hand or fist. But as for the name, then the idea that the black belts, gym leader, and pokemon using concrete or rocks to train then using it to make the ground for Veilstone City is way better.
How did he not notice the Legendary Badge was representing Reshiram and Zekrom. The legendary pokemon in that game. The black has taller spikes than the white, the red references their red eyes.
The Rumble Badge looks like two fists trading blows. And since they're literally the same shape just mirrored, it looks like two similar fighters facing off. In X and Y, you fight Korrina again right after you get the Rumble Badge (atop the Tower of Mastery) where you both use mega evolving Lucarios. It serves as the player's first mega evolution, so is very important to the gimmick of the games themselves. Just another layer of depth. Completely unrelated, I really wish the Voltage Badge was better. I loved the X and Y anime but they did my boi Clemont dirty with the badge...

Went 15 entire minutes before I realized I had a)watched this already, b)that this is a compilation and c)that this isn't an entirely brand new video talking about any and all neat theories, lore and implications behind the badge names and designs you learned about after posting the original videos or that could couldnt fit in the original videos.
As far as Giovanni's badge is concerned, it also loosely resembles a stalk of rice, which symbolizes wealth and mercantilism, and Giovanni is ungodly rich and does a lot of business!
pretty sure that the soul and marsh names got mixed up. The soul matches with psychic powers better and poison is strongly associated with marshes and swamps
Upon looking at it the voltage badge reminds me of a trivial pursuit wedge, and looking at the map of the city it looks like it’s broken up into 5 wedges itself. Adding the fact that the gym challenge is trivia adds to this design idea. With the bolts I’m thinking it’s light beams coming from the center like the prism tower lighting up the city at night.
37:13 I also see this gym leader as a similar energy to Toph from Last Airbender: could also be a way to keep the fighter’s spirit bound to certain sensory points for maximum power, but I could also be going on a tangent
I thi k the Rising Badge is playing into the idea that Dragon's and the type are an ascended breed. They rise above the rest and stand above and appart of the rest. MegaRayquaza's signature is even Dragon's Ascent.
... must not be familiar with the Tekken games, as the first King is a blatant Fray Tornenta expy (oh lord, his Tekken 2 ending at the orphanage is awesome for the FMV kids 😂).
All these badges really have interesting meanings (for the most part), while some are simple and easy to understand others have deeper meanings....also, the fact they also reflect the gym leaders' personalities are also a nice touch. Kanto Boulder: Possibly the simplest, as its the first badge of all of them. It's a boulder, nuff said. Cascade: A drop of water, but like like a waterfall it cascades down quickly Thunder: Possibly based on the city's color (Vermilion), but also the theory of it being similar to a military badge is a nice touch. Rainbow: Flowers come in all kinds of colors of shapes, and like a rainbow, is a beauty to behold. Soul: Much like the petal it represents, the badge is a symbol of one's heart and soul....despite the poisonous paths one must traverse Marsh: The "Third Eye" aspect would definitely fit for the psychic type (in fact, if the center was red it would be a dead ringer for that motif) Volcano: It's a firey hot volcano. No other hot takes needed. Earth Badge: The fact it's based on Shinto practices is a surprising fact considering Giovanni's criminal past. Johto Zephyr: Designed to be bird wings and named after the wind, it's a very fitting Flying-Type badge Hive: The color and design befits the Bug-Type, though the name may have needed some metamorphosis Plain: The fact that so many meanings are in a simple design is quite surprising....not surprising; the cow turning my confidence to roadkill again and again. Fog: Eerie fog is one of many elements in ghostly myths, and the fact it's actually like a ghost is fitting. Storm: While the design does fit the type, the name may come from its surroundings as its a seaside town (possibly frequented by storms) Mineral: The first Steel-Type badge is simple....but it could be that the badge itself is a more refined boulder badge. After all, metal is made when ore is processed and refined when heated. Glacier: As the first Ice-Type badge, again, simple in design, though it resembles more of a snowflake up close Rising: A very impressive design for a Dragon-Type badge....and the name may be referencing a dragon rising up a waterfall (like the HM she gives you the badge for real) Hoenn Stone: simple in name, not so much in design....perhaps because its colors match the city it's found in Knuckle: Another simple design, but meaningful in its colors....surfer dude gym leader's catching waves in the fighting type scene Dynamo: An Electric-type gym based on an actual electric generator and his main pokemon. Heat: In terms of design, it really fits the Fire motif (just like its passionate gym leader) Balance: Much like its design, the meaning is equality....balance in all things, in battle and in life. Feather: It's shaped like a bird feather. what else is there to say. It's a feather. Mind: A heart with a gem in the middle....possibly representing the union of mind and soul, separate yet together. Rain: While the drops resemble rain, the left drop may depict a dragon scale....and Milotic (which would make a beautiful sea dragon), could also be represented by its current evo method: trading it while holding a Prism Scale. Sinnoh Coal: Really fits Roark and the town well, as Oreburgh is a mining town. Forest: While it looks like three trees, the way it actually represents "Forest" in Katakana is actually a very genius design move. Relic: It's like three ghosts circling an artifact (or possibly a Spiritomb). Cobble: Looks like a mismatch of bricks, or a tatami mat from a dojo. Fen: While based on actual terrain (which to me is a surprise), it also represents Crasher Wake's fighting style. Mine: Pickaxes on all sides, it fits the steel mining aspect. Also, Steel tools are needed to mine ore and other things (hence Roark and Byron's relationship) Icicle: Yeah looks more like an iceberg (or icicles if flipped 180 degrees). Although the top representing Snover and Abomasnow is plausible Beacon: It's lonely at the top (possibly because that's why Volkner is so depressed and you find him in the lighthouse), and gaining the badge is a sign of lighting the beacon of hope for him. Unova (Badge sizes have downsized and compressed now) Trio Badge: Representing the three "leaders" and their pokemon. Quite unique and fitting Basic: Shaped like a book (after all, Lenora's pretty booksmart herself). Insect: An insect flying with beautiful wings (also matches the artistic Burrg too) Bolt: A BOLT OF BRILLIANCE! (Seriously though, it's a great design for a simple badge) Quake: It resembles a plot of earth during a tectonic shift...and the turquoise in the middle is a nice pop of color Jet: A bird leaving behind a jetstream of clouds behind it. Freeze: A simple icicle stalactite....not much else Legend: A badge possibly resembling the legendary dragons with the center being its "eye" Toxic: Rising toxic trails with the classic "bones" around the top Wave: Shaped like a drop of water, but the design is based on the crest of waves approaching shore Kalos Bug: Simple and straightforward...even shaped like one. Cliff: Shaped like cliff faces, fitting for the daredevil rock climber Grant (and the gym he runs...it's basically a rock-climbing gym) Rumble: Like two fists bumping each other before a fight....or two fighters clashing Plant: Shaped like a plant, and the drop shape on the outside is based on the coastal town its in....and the roots below can be seen through Voltage: It's like a reflective surface overflowing with electric power...the voltage coming out of them. Fairy: The first badge of its kind, and the wings and stained glass design is simply breathtaking Psychic: the bottom possibly looks like a crystal ball with smoke coming out...and looks otherworldly Iceberg: An iceberg floating in arctic waters with a snowflake motif on the outside....possibly the best Ice-Type badge design Galar (Each badge is a piece of a whole....and is a very clever aspect since they all combine into one upon completion) Grass: A leaf, like on Milo's shirt and the town he's from Water: a splash of water drops Fire: fireball Fighting: A flying fist Ghost: floating spirit (possibly one that's following you) Fairy: a butterfly (which are tied to fairies and nature) Rock: a cracked rock Ice: simply an ice cube Dark: Very devilish Dragon: a fierce dragon head Paldea (Boring by design....save for the Starfall Street ones. The gym leaders have more personality than the badges themselves) Bug, Water, Psychic, Normal, Electric, Ghost, Ice, Grass (Gym Badges) Fairy, Fighting, Dark, Poison, Fire (Starfall Street Badges) Rock, Dragon, Steel, Ground, Flying (Legend Badges)
Y'know I wrote down my own Pokémon game idea which involved 16 gyms covering almost every type, so why not show you the badge names i had for all of them Flying: Airline Badge (The Leader dresses like a flight attendant, and is also a drag queen buts that's unrelated) Rock: Idol Badge (Leader was a Lara Croftian Treasure Hunter) Electric: Jumpstart Badge Ice: Chiller Badge Fire: Cooking Badge (Leader is a chef, I came up with this game idea Before Crispin BTW) Poison: Medic Badge (Leader is a Creepy Nurse) Dark: Ruffian Badge (Leader is a Biker Gang Leader) Water: Maelstrom Badge Fairy: Sweet-Tooth Badge (Leaders name is Candy and has a sister named Sugar) Ghost: Cemetery Badge (Leader works at a cemetery as a grave digger) Bug: Swarm Badge Psychic: Thinker Badge Fighting: Knockout Badge Steel: Science Badge (Leader is a scientist) Normal: Extraordinary Badge (Leader wants to prove that the normal types can do amazing things, and since he's one of the end game leaders he did, he could probably even become an Elite) Ground: Pyramid Badge (Leader dresses and acts like a pharaoh) These two types actually belong to two elites but if they did have badge names Grass: Flytrap Badge (Leaders aesthetic embraces the scary part of nature) Dragon: Slayer Badge (Because you slay dragons and the elite duo, yes there's two of them and their actually a mother and daughter, have a Damsel and Dragon look to them)
I think it’s necessary to point out the Paldea badges show the basic type icon likely because those are the icons they use for the Terra raids. And for kids, it’d be helpful to see the type icon in the badge and know what type you’re going up against when you see that icon on a terra raid.
For the Paldea badges, it could be argued that because of the school theme of the games, and how "Champion" is a school rank rather than just being the tippie top of the mountain, the Paldea badges could reflect this aspect of mass production and keeping it simple. Galar also had the puzzle theme, but that also reflects the region making the Gym Challenge a sports event, so getting all badges results in functionally earning a medal. And with previous generations each gym was allowed to make their own custom badges without them being unified or mass produced.
Another comprehensive series bound for incompletion upon the next generation. Yeah, if Gamefreak can be lazy in an area of the games, I'd say the badges are a good pick. Trying to come up with names and designs that reflect either the type, the town, or the gym leader (or a combination of those) when any of those things can change over the course of a tight development cycle, while every name has to be translated and localized for a lot of diffferent markets every couple of years is time and effort that can really be better spent elsewhere. Especially for something the vast majority of players will rarely care about after obtaining.
i just realized reshiram comes from BLACK and zekrom comes from WHITE i thought it was the other way around i'm so confused i also don't know why people care about the badges i mean it's just a badge but it would be cool if the next pokemon game we get with badges had cool designs and names but even if i don't really care about their uniqueness the badges before were wayy better i enjoyed how the sh/sw badges fit together
Just makes me think of a badge idea I had when I was real into Fighting types; the Combo Badge. It was a Z-shaped trail leading into a rising, flaming fist. If you know, you know.
I think there was also a thing in the past Like Giovanni was meant to have all 3 Legendary Birds. The badge would then be a feather instead - and it very much looks like a feather without the later add-ons. So... Yeah Roxanne's badge could be reminiscent of the many layers of rock and soil that have piled up. Tectonic plates. Fossil stuff. Something like that
I'm 5 months late, and I'm sure somebody brought it up before me, but, I love the corelation between the Boulder badge and Mineral badge. They have the exact same shape and almost identical color, only real difference being the lack of lines on the inside. These lines are what gives the Boulder badge the jagged look, like roughly cut stone, and Mineral badge removes them, making it clear and REFINED like what you do with rocks to get metal. Both are kinda uninspired on their own, but together tell a very neat story.
quick-ish video idea: There's this video by a guy called "internet pitstop" which talks about the actual regions themselves, about how they've evolved and devolved over time. He makes a lot of really cool points and I think it would be great if someone like you were to make a video about it.

For as basic or confusing as Johto's badges are, I wanted to take a moment to nerd out about the hidden genius of the Mineral Badge. Look at Jasmine's badge. Now look at Brock's badge. It's a polished down Boulder Badge. Brock uses Onix. Jasmine uses Steelix. There's even an npc in the lighthouse who brings up how she used to be a rock type leader before the advent of steel types. It's a good example of Johto's theme of times moving forward and evolving.
A theory I read recently is how Jasmine only has Steelix and a few magnemite. Magnemite are found just before Olivine and have a low chance of holding metal coat, so she probably caught a couple and found a metal coat and evolved her Onix entirely by accident

For the Rainbow Badge, it is because Celadon City's Japanese name is Tamamushi, which comes from the coloration of jewel beetles that live in Asia. These beetles have shells that appear green when looked at directly, but when viewed at other angles will appear rainbow-like due to light reflection.
The Earth Badge from Viridian is referred to as the "Green Badge" in the Japanese versions of the game. It doesn't really effect that much in the first generation, but consider that your rival was originally named Green before the version names were changed for international release. So in the Japanese versions of Gold, Silver, and Crystal you are getting the Green Badge from Green. Well played, Game Freak.

Due to a localization error, the names of the Soul Badge and the Swamp Badge were swapped in the US versions of Pokémon Red and Blue. The US version also serves as the basis for the other languages. This error was also adopted in later media to avoid confusion.

I believe the reason for the most recen two generations of gym badges being "Uninspired" being the corperasation of the gym challenge over all! In Galar almost each Gym was a carbon copy stadium build by the rose coorperation (or the league) and in Paldea its heavily implied that each gymleader is just employed by Gita who is the chairwomen of that league. the Gym leaders and gyms themselves have become easily replacable (paldea doesnt even have proper stadiums just designated open spaces and a company branch building)
Looking at the designs throughout the generations you can see an evolution to the pokemon league anś a corperate entity: In the first 3 Generations each gym could be a place that has been there even before a proper league was established the gyms having their own unique historic badges that need to be collected to enter the new league. in gen 4 and 5 we see that the badges now all share a thematic theme, roundish with silver borders in sinnho and long with gold borders in Unova, possibly a result of the league having taken over badge production causing theam to look like a proper set, perhaps the designs are still co-made by the respective gym leaders as well. In Kalos i believe their badges are just more Detailed because each Gymleader was allowed to design their own badge or they are modernizations of culturally important badges from the past.
Alola being culturally different from the other reagions still has to establish their gyms and league but they have made an effort to modernize their traditional islande challenges as a stamp card attraction.
Now back to the new games, I really believe here the Pokemon Gyms have lost most of their history in favor of being a sport competistion, with the Galar Gym Challange literally being a reoccuring Football tournament and in Paldea it just being kinda there for students of the big pokemon academy?
You can complain about how gamefreak lost inspiration sure but i believe it should not be missed that the Badge designs becoming bland is spelling out another subtle narrative of how in the Pokemon Universe Gyms and the Pokemon league have changed over time. I think thats a very interesting aspect to it that should be pointed out aswell

@@Lemonberrys For Alola, do you mean the islands themselves (Melemele, Akala, Ula'Ula, and Poni) or the main cities (Hau'oli, Konikoni, and Malie)? Poni Island doesn't have a city so I didn't add it to the city list.
Anywho, they do have names that have meaning. The most easily explained ones are the island names because they're based off colors in Hawaiian: yellow, pink, red, and purple respectively. It's been a few years so I currently don't remember the further details (as I believe each island is supposed to represent an island in Hawaii and it's official color) but they do have deeper meanings.

Lt. Surge’s badge might actually be a reference to Vermillion City’s slogan: “The Port of Exquisite Sunsets”. That’s why it’s shaped like the sun.

As boring as the Paldea badges are, their uniformity is the most realistic portrayal of what real world organizations often like to do to make things "cohesive" and "on-brand". Do I think that aspect was intentional? No, but it's there.
I lowkey wish they would bring back the overly designed badges rather than the kinda bland pin badges or jigsaw pieces in the new gens.

* Park Badge - For a gym leader who uses early route Pokemon
* Music Badge - For a gym leader who specializes in sound based Pokemon
* Storm Badge - Gym leader specializes in Electric, Flying, and maybe also Water type
* Myth Badge - Gym leader uses Dragon and Fairy type Pokemon
* Beast badge - Gym leader uses Pokemon in the Monster egg group.
* Toolbox Badge. - For a gym leader using object based Pokemon.
* Rarity Badge - Gym leader uses hard to find Pokemon such as starter Pokemon for example
* Tank Badge - Gym Leader uses Pokemon with High defense.

Note about the Rain badge: It kinda looks like Milotic's scales! As shown in the anime, Feebas have a special pink-blue scale when they're ready to evolve, hence why the odd detailed part on the badge and the general color palette. Though that's just my speculation xd

when i was a kid i thought "Zephyr sounds so cool" so i looked it up, in a dictionary since i didn't have 24/7 access to the computer let alone the internet at the time.
Another thing about Roxy's Toxic Badge: the little protrusion coming off the top bubble that you said mimic crossed bones for deadly poison... that could also be interpreted as popping motion lines, as the bubbles in the poisoned animation rise and pop!
I feel like clemont’s badge is more a nod towards his inventing, with the lines/lightning bolts coming out of a pinpoint dot, almost like an explosion, which most of his inventions result in, and like how Luminos city is the center of kalos, and also where a large power plant is located, so the bolt lines could represent power lines, and the piwer being supplied to the rest of the region
Paldea may have basic badge designs, but it's the photos that are more important, and the fact there are technically 18 "badges", one task of every type whether it be Gym, Team Star, or Titan... the photos are to mark story completion the same way traditional badges used to, similar to Alola's stamps
For the Paldean badgers, I have always thought that they look like coins. And with the region being based on Spain, I think that is a bit fitting.
Apparently a lot of source materials actually make the switch between the Marsh and Soul badges, which makes a bit of sense. Like, Soul seems a lot more Psychic-y(Fighting too, if we count the previous gym) and Marsh seems a bit more in theme with the whole poison-y gym and fits with the Safari Zone imo. But I do really like your correlation between the Soul Badge and Fuchsia! Great video!
The “verre” part in “Laverre City” also means “glass” in French, which fits the stained glass theme :)
In defense of the Gen 9 badges…. What the hell are they gonna do to even name the badges??? Like, you already have beetle, hive, and insect badges, might as well just call it the bug badge. Like sure, you could do like the moth or butterfly badge, but then that’s just redundant. I personally like the Gen 9 badges for their simplicity, and as someone else in the comments pointed out, the real badges of Gen 9 are the unique photos you take with each leader.

You know mineral badge does make sense when connecting it to Jasmine. An NPC says that Jasmine was originally a Rock type trainer before changing to use the newly discovered Steel type. Not only would it make sense to say Jasmine just didn’t change her badge when changing her type, but the mineral to metal process reflects her change from Rock to Steel.

In defense of Galar, gyms and gym leaders can be switched out kinda on the regular. If the badges looked too much like the previous leaders, then when they change hands, sometimes types, now that new leader has to design a whole new badge and anyone who completed the league before that now has an "unofficial" older set.
In "defense" of Paldea, the league is less of a "here's a unique trophie for completing our gym" and more "this is going on your permanent record" kind of thing. The badges need to be uniform across all types because it is easier for a school to manage them, like grades on tests. Plus, they have a constant intake of students all trying for the league, so having easily mass-produced badges probably saves on costs (ironic). I kinda like that Team Star, as an act of rebellion, added extra flare to these other badges that clearly look like they were once produced by the school but were discontinued. Casted aside, either to make way for better gym leaders or relics of gym types that are no longer being considered, thus limiting the students in a way. It's a fun layer to consider for the whole Team Star story.
I might be a little late, but regarding the Cobble Badge at 35:28, I've always seen it as two arms going in opposite directions of each other to hit whoever's throwing the punch. The long rectangle is an arm, then the square is the hand or fist.
But as for the name, then the idea that the black belts, gym leader, and pokemon using concrete or rocks to train then using it to make the ground for Veilstone City is way better.
How did he not notice the Legendary Badge was representing Reshiram and Zekrom. The legendary pokemon in that game. The black has taller spikes than the white, the red references their red eyes.
The Rumble Badge looks like two fists trading blows. And since they're literally the same shape just mirrored, it looks like two similar fighters facing off. In X and Y, you fight Korrina again right after you get the Rumble Badge (atop the Tower of Mastery) where you both use mega evolving Lucarios. It serves as the player's first mega evolution, so is very important to the gimmick of the games themselves. Just another layer of depth.
Completely unrelated, I really wish the Voltage Badge was better. I loved the X and Y anime but they did my boi Clemont dirty with the badge...

Personaly the names never really mattered. I don't care if it's named after the type, as long as it looks cool.
Upon looking at it the voltage badge reminds me of a trivial pursuit wedge, and looking at the map of the city it looks like it’s broken up into 5 wedges itself. Adding the fact that the gym challenge is trivia adds to this design idea. With the bolts I’m thinking it’s light beams coming from the center like the prism tower lighting up the city at night.

I thi k the Rising Badge is playing into the idea that Dragon's and the type are an ascended breed. They rise above the rest and stand above and appart of the rest. MegaRayquaza's signature is even Dragon's Ascent.

All these badges really have interesting meanings (for the most part), while some are simple and easy to understand others have deeper meanings....also, the fact they also reflect the gym leaders' personalities are also a nice touch.
Kanto
Boulder: Possibly the simplest, as its the first badge of all of them. It's a boulder, nuff said.
Cascade: A drop of water, but like like a waterfall it cascades down quickly
Thunder: Possibly based on the city's color (Vermilion), but also the theory of it being similar to a military badge is a nice touch.
Rainbow: Flowers come in all kinds of colors of shapes, and like a rainbow, is a beauty to behold.
Soul: Much like the petal it represents, the badge is a symbol of one's heart and soul....despite the poisonous paths one must traverse
Marsh: The "Third Eye" aspect would definitely fit for the psychic type (in fact, if the center was red it would be a dead ringer for that motif)
Volcano: It's a firey hot volcano. No other hot takes needed.
Earth Badge: The fact it's based on Shinto practices is a surprising fact considering Giovanni's criminal past.
Johto
Zephyr: Designed to be bird wings and named after the wind, it's a very fitting Flying-Type badge
Hive: The color and design befits the Bug-Type, though the name may have needed some metamorphosis
Plain: The fact that so many meanings are in a simple design is quite surprising....not surprising; the cow turning my confidence to roadkill again and again.
Fog: Eerie fog is one of many elements in ghostly myths, and the fact it's actually like a ghost is fitting.
Storm: While the design does fit the type, the name may come from its surroundings as its a seaside town (possibly frequented by storms)
Mineral: The first Steel-Type badge is simple....but it could be that the badge itself is a more refined boulder badge. After all, metal is made when ore is processed and refined when heated.
Glacier: As the first Ice-Type badge, again, simple in design, though it resembles more of a snowflake up close
Rising: A very impressive design for a Dragon-Type badge....and the name may be referencing a dragon rising up a waterfall (like the HM she gives you the badge for real)
Hoenn
Stone: simple in name, not so much in design....perhaps because its colors match the city it's found in
Knuckle: Another simple design, but meaningful in its colors....surfer dude gym leader's catching waves in the fighting type scene
Dynamo: An Electric-type gym based on an actual electric generator and his main pokemon.
Heat: In terms of design, it really fits the Fire motif (just like its passionate gym leader)
Balance: Much like its design, the meaning is equality....balance in all things, in battle and in life.
Feather: It's shaped like a bird feather. what else is there to say. It's a feather.
Mind: A heart with a gem in the middle....possibly representing the union of mind and soul, separate yet together.
Rain: While the drops resemble rain, the left drop may depict a dragon scale....and Milotic (which would make a beautiful sea dragon), could also be represented by its current evo method: trading it while holding a Prism Scale.
Sinnoh
Coal: Really fits Roark and the town well, as Oreburgh is a mining town.
Forest: While it looks like three trees, the way it actually represents "Forest" in Katakana is actually a very genius design move.
Relic: It's like three ghosts circling an artifact (or possibly a Spiritomb).
Cobble: Looks like a mismatch of bricks, or a tatami mat from a dojo.
Fen: While based on actual terrain (which to me is a surprise), it also represents Crasher Wake's fighting style.
Mine: Pickaxes on all sides, it fits the steel mining aspect. Also, Steel tools are needed to mine ore and other things (hence Roark and Byron's relationship)
Icicle: Yeah looks more like an iceberg (or icicles if flipped 180 degrees). Although the top representing Snover and Abomasnow is plausible
Beacon: It's lonely at the top (possibly because that's why Volkner is so depressed and you find him in the lighthouse), and gaining the badge is a sign of lighting the beacon of hope for him.
Unova (Badge sizes have downsized and compressed now)
Trio Badge: Representing the three "leaders" and their pokemon. Quite unique and fitting
Basic: Shaped like a book (after all, Lenora's pretty booksmart herself).
Insect: An insect flying with beautiful wings (also matches the artistic Burrg too)
Bolt: A BOLT OF BRILLIANCE! (Seriously though, it's a great design for a simple badge)
Quake: It resembles a plot of earth during a tectonic shift...and the turquoise in the middle is a nice pop of color
Jet: A bird leaving behind a jetstream of clouds behind it.
Freeze: A simple icicle stalactite....not much else
Legend: A badge possibly resembling the legendary dragons with the center being its "eye"
Toxic: Rising toxic trails with the classic "bones" around the top
Wave: Shaped like a drop of water, but the design is based on the crest of waves approaching shore
Kalos
Bug: Simple and straightforward...even shaped like one.
Cliff: Shaped like cliff faces, fitting for the daredevil rock climber Grant (and the gym he runs...it's basically a rock-climbing gym)
Rumble: Like two fists bumping each other before a fight....or two fighters clashing
Plant: Shaped like a plant, and the drop shape on the outside is based on the coastal town its in....and the roots below can be seen through
Voltage: It's like a reflective surface overflowing with electric power...the voltage coming out of them.
Fairy: The first badge of its kind, and the wings and stained glass design is simply breathtaking
Psychic: the bottom possibly looks like a crystal ball with smoke coming out...and looks otherworldly
Iceberg: An iceberg floating in arctic waters with a snowflake motif on the outside....possibly the best Ice-Type badge design
Galar (Each badge is a piece of a whole....and is a very clever aspect since they all combine into one upon completion)
Grass: A leaf, like on Milo's shirt and the town he's from
Water: a splash of water drops
Fire: fireball
Fighting: A flying fist
Ghost: floating spirit (possibly one that's following you)
Fairy: a butterfly (which are tied to fairies and nature)
Rock: a cracked rock
Ice: simply an ice cube
Dark: Very devilish
Dragon: a fierce dragon head
Paldea (Boring by design....save for the Starfall Street ones. The gym leaders have more personality than the badges themselves)

Y'know I wrote down my own Pokémon game idea which involved 16 gyms covering almost every type, so why not show you the badge names i had for all of them
Flying: Airline Badge (The Leader dresses like a flight attendant, and is also a drag queen buts that's unrelated)
Rock: Idol Badge (Leader was a Lara Croftian Treasure Hunter)
Electric: Jumpstart Badge
Ice: Chiller Badge
Fire: Cooking Badge (Leader is a chef, I came up with this game idea Before Crispin BTW)
Poison: Medic Badge (Leader is a Creepy Nurse)
Dark: Ruffian Badge (Leader is a Biker Gang Leader)
Water: Maelstrom Badge
Fairy: Sweet-Tooth Badge (Leaders name is Candy and has a sister named Sugar)
Ghost: Cemetery Badge (Leader works at a cemetery as a grave digger)
Bug: Swarm Badge
Psychic: Thinker Badge
Fighting: Knockout Badge
Steel: Science Badge (Leader is a scientist)
Normal: Extraordinary Badge (Leader wants to prove that the normal types can do amazing things, and since he's one of the end game leaders he did, he could probably even become an Elite)
Ground: Pyramid Badge (Leader dresses and acts like a pharaoh)
These two types actually belong to two elites but if they did have badge names
Grass: Flytrap Badge (Leaders aesthetic embraces the scary part of nature)
Dragon: Slayer Badge (Because you slay dragons and the elite duo, yes there's two of them and their actually a mother and daughter, have a Damsel and Dragon look to them)
I think it’s necessary to point out the Paldea badges show the basic type icon likely because those are the icons they use for the Terra raids. And for kids, it’d be helpful to see the type icon in the badge and know what type you’re going up against when you see that icon on a terra raid.

There's tons of characters named after trees and plants im the japanese versions. Its not just a professor thing there

My childhood was so stressful because of the damn Plain badge...
For the Paldea badges, it could be argued that because of the school theme of the games, and how "Champion" is a school rank rather than just being the tippie top of the mountain, the Paldea badges could reflect this aspect of mass production and keeping it simple. Galar also had the puzzle theme, but that also reflects the region making the Gym Challenge a sports event, so getting all badges results in functionally earning a medal. And with previous generations each gym was allowed to make their own custom badges without them being unified or mass produced.
Another comprehensive series bound for incompletion upon the next generation. Yeah, if Gamefreak can be lazy in an area of the games, I'd say the badges are a good pick. Trying to come up with names and designs that reflect either the type, the town, or the gym leader (or a combination of those) when any of those things can change over the course of a tight development cycle, while every name has to be translated and localized for a lot of diffferent markets every couple of years is time and effort that can really be better spent elsewhere.
Especially for something the vast majority of players will rarely care about after obtaining.

i also don't know why people care about the badges i mean it's just a badge but it would be cool if the next pokemon game we get with badges had cool designs and names but even if i don't really care about their uniqueness the badges before were wayy better i enjoyed how the sh/sw badges fit together
Just makes me think of a badge idea I had when I was real into Fighting types; the Combo Badge. It was a Z-shaped trail leading into a rising, flaming fist.

Roxanne's badge could be reminiscent of the many layers of rock and soil that have piled up. Tectonic plates. Fossil stuff. Something like that
To me, the Glacier Badge was supposed to represent an ice cube. That's how I use to see it 😂😂.
10:45 Geovani was first meant to be a flying type gymleader but was later changed to a ground type gymleader. The badge resembles a feather.

I'm 5 months late, and I'm sure somebody brought it up before me, but, I love the corelation between the Boulder badge and Mineral badge. They have the exact same shape and almost identical color, only real difference being the lack of lines on the inside. These lines are what gives the Boulder badge the jagged look, like roughly cut stone, and Mineral badge removes them, making it clear and REFINED like what you do with rocks to get metal. Both are kinda uninspired on their own, but together tell a very neat story.
