  • Wasn't planning on doing this, but the recent gameplay of Sonic Frontiers has showcased a much better side of the upcoming title, leaving me far more excited than before.

    The Spidey sense you see in-game could be a call back to Sonic's Sixth Sense, it used to be a sneeze that alerted him of danger, but this is a bit more useful!

    One nice detail is how Sonic drops rings when he hits the ground NOT from being hit. It helps with collecting them back given the chance of falling from a cliff or being knocked far back.
    Also some attacks seems to knock you back without taking any rings at all which could be an ability thing or balance. Very cool either way.
    Hope it perfects some of the RPG elements from Secret Rings and Black Knight.

    So apparently there’s a slider that controls Sonic’s base speed, handling, acceleration, etc. and you can find collectibles that enhance his base speed even further

    So, theorywise, they released the snippit of the story and that Sonic has lost his memory, that there will be an ability tree etc. I'm assuming the reason he's not moving mach 98 is because of maybe having to relearn how to use his speed? Curious to see more on this. I'm super hyped for it.

      The game is lookin pretty good, my main gripe is just that though, sonic is a tad slow. If this is the case then I’m all for it, leveling up your speed capability to better traverse the environment and be able to get to new and higher places through speed and building up greater momentum sounds great!

      @@slimeballz3367 Well in a recent leak, it’s been confirmed you can level up Sonic’s speed. On top of that, it was stated a bit ago that there are two modes, combat and speed,
      Speed, as it implies, has Sonic move much faster than what was shown in the first gameplay demo.

      That, or going past 20mph would make the geometry traversal literally impossible.
      Even though a game like this could probably benefit from Sonic having a lot of speed for getting across the map a lot easier.

      I’m optimistic and agree, even if this is some of the same stuff people said during Forces’ pre-release hype. I know this is different tho, because it looks like they’ve learned from every mistake. But still.

      Trust me, it REALLY didn’t feel great to be a fan 2 weeks ago. However, I’m hopeful that things will calm down now that we’ve gotten a look at a better build. Still holding out hope for customisation in frontiers, since that was one of 2 major things forces did really well

    This is one of the most positive and optimistic reaction I found to Sonic Frontiers yet, when I see all this negative feedback it makes me pretty sad and mad, this video made my day

      Do not get excited for the parry, they said it's just a block where you hold both shoulder buttons and then you just auto-counter whenever you get hit

    I'm not a hardcore sonic fan, but I think that this game has a lot of potential, and I mean A LOT:
    In the trailer, you notice that as you complete puzzles, there's a sonar like pulse of energy that activates something. My theory? The game only starts out with empty fields, but the more that you interact with the ancient tech, the world becomes more full of signature sonic structures, like ramps, loops, and platforming structures, making the world both more interactive, and more easily traversable with sonic's abilities. I think that this game has a lot of potential, both as a sonic game, and as an open world game. Unfortunately, the physics still seem a bit weird. But I think that the fundamental concept is very good.

    A point about the parry, as someone who was excited for this game the moment we saw footage _anyway..._
    From an extremely negative review, I heard that parries occur even if you just sit there blocking, like it's automatic. That's a big combat red flag for me, because I value a game's parry system to death, BUT I have only ever heard it from a reviewer who clearly had a shit ton of bias against 3D Sonic and was hyper aggressive, and NOBODY else. So here's hoping it was just slander or something lmao

    I heard from somewhere that someone who's in charge of the development of this game was a fan of Demon Slayer. In that anime, the main character can often see where he needs to attack to get the finishing blow on an opponent in the form of a thread directing him to that point.
    So if that's true, you're pretty much on the money with that Spidey-sense theory.

    the only thing that’s really bothering me anymore is the trick animations. holding out for those to get some more work, but in the grand scheme of it, I’m so glad that the list of things I want to see changed has been made so much smaller! this game isn’t looking to be as bad as I initially thought and that’s a really exciting thing.

    seeing sonic stick, walk and run up walls makes me miss Espio and knuckles. there's plenty of sonic fan projects that utilize sonics friends abilities and it bugs me seeing sonic being able to do certain things that make them unique even if its on only certain surfaces. that said I want this game to be good but at the same time I'm afraid to get my hopes up. I haven't played a 3d sonic game since generations and that was almost a decade ago. we shall see. if its good I'll gladly admit I'm wrong but if its bad I won't say a word and carry on like usual.

      @Cosmic yes but i don't want to see Sonic starting to fly or dig if you catch my drift. I miss playing as Sonic's friends. I get it; sonic team doesn't have the guts to do multiple play styles anymore like they used too. games like Sonic world or robo blast 2, mania mods have given me a glimpse of what other characters could do so long as the level designs compliment them as well. we'll always have those at least.

    I already thought this game looked fairly fun from the start, but now I'm even more excited because this looks better than I was expecting. The combat definitely doesn't look anywhere near as mindless as the leaks would've had you believe (possibly a result of the team adjusting combat in response to feedback from public focus tests). The parry looks INCREDIBLY swag and I love that the combat is focused on movement and making sure the enemy can't catch you, it's very Sonic-like, and the Cyloop takes that even further by letting you literally run circles around your enemy. If you were to make a game where an annoying little blue animal were to throw hands, this is how it would go. You can legit imagine sonic throwing banter at whatever these things are teasing that they can't hit them. It's really great stuff.
    If this game does really well I REALLY want them to give this kind of game a try with Shadow, maybe as a DLC episode, cus I'd love to see how he differs in terms of combat to Sonic. Imagine all the insane shit you could do zipping around with Chaos Snap or slowing down time or whatever else. It'd be so sick
    Edit: coming back to this after new gameplay surfaced, yeah, the game still looks like my jam. I wanna play it right now. Why don't I live in Germany

    Well, recent footage of the gamescom demo popped up and it’s looks amazing (aside from the Cyberspace stages, those are definitely going to be terrible). The open-zone looks like a regular Sonic stage, but incredibly open (hence the whole “open-zone” marketing).

    Im just gonna list some stuff i hope ends up in the game:
    -An accessory system with stat boosts like in Secret rings would be awesome or maybe even like the charm system from Hollow Knight
    -The metal parts of the environment like the railings are kinda out of place. Although I believe that it was added solely to show off mechanics, I hope they make it so the natural structure of the world and level design allows you to utilise sonic's speed to the fullest because the graphics look sensational.
    -Faster combat, I like how they deviate from the usual homing attack formula but it could be done better maybe with QTE cinematocs taking the idea from Asura's Wrath or even a combo system like Unleashed's when a boss is staggered
    -Biomes is a BIG one. Although the game looks amazing, I cannot confidently say that I will enjoy playing in that same environment tha entire time, It should vary as it always does with sand, water, fire, wind, earth and then a final unlockable area. which leads me to my next point
    -OPEN. WORLD. for the world to really be opened up to players I feel that they should truly have the freedom to go about each zone at their own pace and order. Of course there should be some level of difficulty to defer and define areas from one another, but it should NEVER be impossible excluding the finale.
    Those are pretty much the major points I have and hope they improve on by the time the game releases. Great video and analysis!

    so honestly im gonna be the contrarian here and call myself aggressively pessimistic. the game looks slightly better then the initial showing tho major core problems are still present that will not get fixed in the time they have, and no im not talking about the physics or the boost. the game looks to have this hyper fixation on stoping you for needless gating, the torches the tile puzzles the rings and even all the enemies require you to stop and wait there is no flow to anything and even the massive playground only looks fun when all the puzzles are complete and you dont need the rails anymore. and just to touch on the cool looking parry, i love me a good parry in a game.... however thats not just a good parry thats a game breaking parry, if that is as easy to pull off as it seems then every single encounter in the game could just be sonic standing still and waiting to hit the parry button.
    they have a lot of fundimental issues in this game that everyone is ignoring because the game looks slightly better. I want this game to proove me wrong but when they cant even be honest about listening to their fans i can only be pessimistic about what im seeing.
    hay thanks for reading through this i know it can be super hard to hear somone point out problems when you just want to be excited, but thanks for giving a different opinion a bit of time. though if your still looking forward to the game then i do hope you enjoy it even if i dont.

    love this channel. very very nervous for the game. Also nervous for the soundtrack. Sonic soundtracks seem to fit into the bite sized levels with very compact areas, but I really don't know how the team will fit this vibe into open world, because I know for sure they could not slap on the BOTW soundtrack and call it a day. Idk just makes me nervous. all new things for sega

    FINALLY a realistic art style again! Sonic has always worked really well in a realistic environment (Including alongside realistic humans like in SA2 and 06) and I think it sets him apart from other platforming franchises with cartoony characters. Would really like to see that aesthetic come back fully for a new Adventure game!
    Chaosx should update the 06 graphics with these visuals while keeping the realistic Sonic, Shadow, and Eggman models (But, updating the graphics on them as well!) I'd also love to see Sonic's combat in this game ported to Shadow's moveset in P-06 to make the combat in that game even more fun!

      Realistic environments I support, but I can't agree on realistic characters, it looks ridiculous to me. I loved the character style in unleashed, I'd love to see more of that!

    that was him following the spline path for that walkway
    notice how he stays perfectly aligned with the path?
    its just like that one pathway in the city level of forces
    the one where you are sure you are going to fly off the path
    nope you are permanently locked to that spline until you exit it

      Actually no. He isn't perfectly aligned with the Path. Assuming we're talking about the tower segment, watch again on how his character jitters to the right, almost as if the person's grip isn't solid, like their finger is lightly pressing on and off the joystick.
      That ISN'T automated, it is actual motion. Compare it to sonic's spincycle, or after getting knocked by 'The Tower," he zooms in a tight circle at his fastest and charges for the final blows.
      That isn't automated, that's human action. If it was automated, Sonic wouldn't jitter towards the right on the tower, he'd stay directly in the middle, which doesn't happen.
      Watch it again for yourself, you'll see what I mean (2:13)

      When sonic enters one of these spline areas
      His z rotation gets locked to the direction of the spline
      That coupled with the speed lock out (meaning you aren't locked onto the splines play area unless you are going fast enough)
      Means that sonic can move forward and left or right
      But will always be facing the direction the spline is headed in
      It's like an on rails shooter
      You have some freedom in where you sitting on the screen
      But you are still headed in the same direction
      But he won't go flying off the path

      @@tylerherr4288 Possibly, but remember the movement he made without the splines during the battle with the tower. That sharp turn with boost was practically impossible in previous games, so spline or no spline, it isn't necessary due to the tightning of Sonic's controls, which has been confirmed by demo impressions.
      Even EVEN then, while Splines in Unleashed did give you a bit of room, I still find it hard to believe that this is a spline. Typically in Forces, and even in Unleashed, while you couldn't fall off, your character would maintain movement directly in the middle of the path, and would rarely move to different directions. Assuming this is built off of forces' development team, unlike Unleashed's who went to work at Nintendo, it likely works the same way as Forces. Meaning this can't be a spline, assuming they're using similar development practices.
      Tl;dr, I just think they fine-tuned his controls enough for them to be tight and responsive, meaning no reason for a spline to some extent.

    From what I seen through the IGN trailers and the new clips of gameplay, what I fear is Sonic's identity being completely gone in favor of the wider audience. Granted this game will be alright, but it isn't ideally "Sonic" when it comes down to gameplay.
    The esthetic however I really do like and wish they would use more semi-realistic worlds for Modern Sonic, and I hope the story does pretty good knowing who's behind it.

    There is an ability called super blue boost and by activating that sonic will be able to run like he does.
    This is confirmed by devs😍.

    I know they keep remaking the original Genesis games, but this REALLY makes me want an open-world remake of the classics.
    Like imagine starting in Emerald Hill running around in the fields and over cliffs and waterfalls. Then off in the distance, there's a chemical plant and you can just GO there, and drop out in some ruins that the chemical plant was built on.
    Or like, Angel Island, but you can go anywhere. You can hop onto the Tornado and try to reach the airship, or launch yourself from a canon at the carnival to get there, then break off a door and sled down the slopes of icecap, but take a different route down the mountain and end in up mushroom hills.
    Like, basically everything the sonic games felt like they were supposed to be simulating, but no longer simulating it and just DOING it. Gah that sounds so fun.

    Yes, it runs smoothly, it's flashy, he seems to turn well at high speed, combat makes a much better impression, camera seems good. But all the landmarks and set pieces seem very automated / spectacle over substance, it has collision issues, pop-in is a thing, and the combat still seems kind of spammy. Sorry, but after the cynical Lost World, the soulless Forces, and the corporate Colors Ultimate and Origins, I am too wary to give any benefit of the doubt. So I remain neutral.

    this is gonna seem like a weird thing to nitpick, it's extremely minor and niche but i really wish that jumping didn't just turn you into a blue ball, I've always preferred being able to actually see Sonic spin around (at 2:35 for example) like in the genesis games, SA2, and specifically the Wii/PS2 versions of Unleashed for some reason
    granted, this is kinda just the Forces model so it's not strictly a Frontiers problem, _but_ on the other hand the fact that they're re-using the Forces design in and of itself is another issue I have, i really don't like the Lost World/Forces look with his spines all shorter and bunched up, the slightly lighter blue, the Unleashed & Generations models will always be my favorite
    again, that's all very small details and mostly just aesthetic, in terms of base gameplay I do think it looks fun, the combat looks like it might be promising but something about it looks awkward to me - not in terms of mechanics but moreso in the animations, some feel like the animations finish too fast or look too stiff, for example for the "perfect parry" mentioned earlier i think something like a kick would look better than sonic just doing a pose
    all around im interested but i really will have to play it for myself to actually decide whether i'm fully on board with it

    Imagine what would've happened if they shown the latest gameplay first
    I mean, i was sold enough just from the world alone, but the combat was dreadful the first time which didnt draw me in enough, but the one shown just now has given me more hope and optimism for the game - it just needs a couple of extra polishing and it may get the "high reviews" they kept talking to us about
    What i dont appreciate is game journalists are purposefully twisting words of the interviews explaining the format so that they make it a lot worse than what it really is, trying to force people to avoid it - that alone is not surprising but sickening nonetheless

    Ight I'm sorry that I'm gonna look like a hater here but how on earth does this look "good"? Does it look better than what was presented, absolutely it does, but that's not saying much. I would understand this more if this was a fan made, low budget, small crew, project in the skeleton version of the game, but this just doesn't look great man. Random assets thrown around and floating everywhere with the occasional roaming bad guy can't be all you present to your audience to get excited for a game. This is like BOTW and "Sonic: The Black Knight" made a crossover, and I'm only including BOTW because it has open world and a similar looking Korok seed side quest (the "collectibles" they mention). I really really hope they don't only present this Greenhill zone and put something like Sky Sanctuary or Crisis City because at least there's some justification for stuff just floating around or sticking out. I doubt that will happen though since it seems that we're placed on an island so this is the extent of the map we have.
    The main problem I find with this game (other than just randomly thrown assets that you can run on) is the lack of personality. There's almost no speed, barely any momentum moving from objects, Sonics air tricks are super stiff and stale, homing attacking springs looks super linear, and for some reason looking way more combat oriented rather than an actual Sonic game. Even Black Knight (which wasn't a good game) seemed to mix speed and combat together pretty well compared to this. Hell even Sonic Unleashed seems to have more open world availability than this
    I will admit though, the enemy designs and the graphics look great but that also rubs me the wrong way because it shows what they are focused on instead of what actually matters. It feels like the combat system and the enemies were thought of first and then Sonic just happens to be here. I also like that the rings could POSSIBLY be used for something else other than just health (which never made sense to me in the first place). If there is a skill tree thing (which I read off of someone else's comment idfk what's up with this game) and you can use coins to upgrade yourself, then at least the coins have a use now, and you actually have some motivation to not get hit and save as much as you can.
    The map from what we can see looks very weird. Understandably creating a realistic Greenhill Zone (if this is supposed to be what it is) is pretty difficult because most of the terrain is just random loops and paths made of dirt and earth. But why not focus more on terrain running instead of random floating steel pipes? Why not have craters or caves that you can speed around on? Why are there floating balloons and a rail that has a loop on the side of a tower instead of just going inside the tower and having the rails and assets there? As a matter of fact, why is everything so grossly out in the open with nothing to actually support or justify why its there in the first place? You grind a random rail that takes you up to a floating solid platform with steel crates placed on the top for some reason. Add some trees or at least put points of interest connected to something instead of just magically floating in the sky.
    I know I probably sound like an idiot making a bunch of points but I feel like whoever is running this game had about 2 ideas in mind. "How do we make a "realistic" Sonic combat game" and "How do we make a Sonic game". Obviously realism and Sonic aren't easy to put together... except it kind of is, you just need to be creative. The reason this game looks like its gonna suck (for many reasons) is also due to the sheer lack of an environment or actual world. So far we see flat lands, a few little hills that we have to jump to get on (which aren't really hills but whatever), a waterfall and a weird looking structure.

    As of now I'm currently 50-50 on Frontiers, and unless I see some banger footage of the game that blows me away - which, if it comes, will likely be in the official release trailer - or even just banger information in general, I think I'll stay that way until the game releases. The important thing I need to state is what I'm hoping for out of it, that being the entire game is solid and sets the proper tone for Sonic going forward, so that future games like it will only build off of it to push the boundaries closer to the ideal Sonic game.

    I'm mostly worried about the combat. I don't want Shadow-from-06-style button mashing. I like the small robots that are defeated by one hit and bosses that take multiple. I don't want to be stuck doing combos and stuff. That's not the type of game I like and that's a reason why I like the Sonic games that I and I think most fans like the most.
    I'm also a bit mixed on the idea of this sort of... natural/magic-looking environment and then random springs, dash panels, and rails being scattered about. They didn't make sense. in the past either but part of me feels that as the fidelity and realism increases, they make less and less sense in a natural environment.
    In the end, like you're saying. If it's a fun game, then that's really all that matters. Only time will tell if they truly manage to pull off a game that fans will genuinely love. Not nostalgia love, not make compromises for. Sonic as a franchise needs it. The fans deserve it. We'll see.

    I remain sceptical. I'm in no way a sonic hater, or apologist, or fan. I'm just an old gamer who's seen a few too many disappointments from this series to not be burnt out. And the game being open world is just not going to impress me that much to have any true faith. I could be wrong, but I still will keep my doubts.
