Star was just two months old when Nick White, found him with his mother Ivy in August 2013. Star had been terribly neglected. A leather head collar, which had not been removed or even adjusted for weeks, had become embedded into the little foal’s nose, jaw and the flesh behind his ears. Swollen, encrusted with blood, poor Star had been suffering for weeks as the unforgiving head collar tightened into his flesh and bone as he grew.
Following the surgical removal of his head collar, Star was welcomed to our Glenda Spooner Rescue and Rehoming Centre by Manager, Claire Phillips. When oh when will the perpetrators of these heinous crimes be punished, yes punished not slapped on the wrist. Banned for 3 years? They should be imprisoned and banned for life from keeping or being around any animals. What a sorry state of affairs. 3 years! Is that ALL she got disqualified for? ? Thats disgusting! How could anyone EVER let a horse get in this state and not do anything about it? I would never ever have thought this was done by a young, 'professional' person! She should never be allowed near a horse again!

THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T PUT HALTERS ON BABIES!
They grow so fast, and while most people would be smart enough to keep an eye on it and change the halter when it gets too small, why would a foal this small need a halter? It serves no function! The baby will be following mommy for quite a while so no need to lead him independently, and to the idiots saying he needs to get used to it, no he doesn't! Not yet! He's having a hard time figuring out how to be horse, no need to mess with the human stuff yet. You have plenty of time for that when he's older.

Jenny Kuhlin That's good! I don't like seeing horses loose or unsupervised with halters on, it can easily lead to accidents.
Headcollars (halters) should never be left on 24/7, and never on horses in their stalls or at grass. They can get caught on so many things, including themselves. A foal's halter should be checked frequently, as they grow so quickly. This was inexcusable!!!

The colt's transformation is absolutely amazing! It made me smile that he has come so far. It surprises me how he even lets people put a halter on him! Beautiful boy!
The abuser should have also received jail and community service. I hope this goes on her permanent record. Absolutely inexcusable.

The person guilty of doing this only got three years of no horse ownership? Should of been a lifelong ban! Happy to see she is healed up now and has a wonderful new owner!
Oh I am so so glad Star has a happy ending!! I re-homed a non ridden companion pony from world horse welfare to accompany my mare and it was the best choice I ever made! :)

In the video, Star was so gentle and kind. How could this evil person leave a halter on a gentle easy to handle foal so long that it caused such a grotesque wound? She either had to be deaf, ignorant and blind or doing drugs. Thank you to All the people who helped Star snd and found his forever home. God Bless.

A professional groom? Bull. Noone that handles horses that much, especially a freaking GROOM would let that happen to a foal, especially letting it get that bad. I hope she never gets work again, because there's no excuse.

I only saw one other horse with a halter grown into the poll. That disgusted me! Vet had to cut out halter, medication applied until it healed. I took the horse and cared for it and refused to give her back to abuser.

Oh my god, this is one of the most terrible things I've seen in a while. I can't believe the person who did this got away with such a mild punishment. She is certainly unfit to work with horses or any living being for that matter. I never understand why cowards who hurt defenseless animals aren't punished more severely. It should be punished just the same as hurting another human, so jail in this case, for negligent bodily harm. So glad he has a loving home now.

The first chance I get, i'm going to help you all; volunteer or loving home, whichever comes first. It's such a shame that Star had to go through what he did, but he's still beautiful and a lovely shade of Dun.
Thank god for people like you all over the world who rescue and care for all animals. People can be so cruel.
Where were the horses, outside somewhere that this horrible woman didn't see them for a while? For otherwise, if they were around, HOW could she have let that happen? To a foal! A 3-year ban isn't enough. It should have been 10. Or forever.
So when she first put the halter on the foal he was obviously really small. Why put a halter on at all? When a foal will just follow it's mom. I don't get that. And a heavy leather thing at that, wth? That indentation on his nose was just horrifying. Amazing how it healed though, and almost evened out!
Oh my goodness what a beautiful palomino pony Star is. I don’t understand how this could have happened. Don’t you look after the horses at least two times a day? Was Star and his mother left out in the pastures too long? But even then you’d check on them especially when the mare is with foal. The “professional groom” should not only be given a three year ban on his profession but a retraining program in horse welfare!!!

Oh God, that poor foal! Why the hell did they put one on this foal in the first place? These abusers have to be punished and very severely. That poor little thing. That has to be so painful. I'm so glad that he got a new home!
amazing recovery!!! I have a stallion whos halter was grown into his jaw as well. he got his halter when he was a yearling. I found him, when he was 2 years old. the people told me, that they never tuched him again, after they got him and he was in a bad condition - well fed, but horrible behaviour, wild, scared... what you foal had to endure is unbelievable. You did an amazing job!

It just looks so very painful just looking at the state that Star was i can't even imagine how painful that must have been. I am just really happy star gets a new start!

This is a lovely buckskin foal. People who do this stuff should have something imbedded in their person. How horrible to treat these majestic creatures so badly!
Here we are in 2022. I sincerely hope that Star is still doing well and is receiving all the love and care he deserves. A lovely pony with a delightful caregiver.

How can people do this. If they can't or won't take care of a horse or foal why would they get one. And how did it get embedded in his nose?

Sadly this is a scene I have witnessed too many times when working for the rescue service. Where these people's brains are Lord knows. I wish I could say only with people lacking in knowledge this is not the case. A new pair of shoes new car etc seems more important than a new halter disgusting. All I can say is if you are on a yard or witness to cruelty please come forward. Without you as witnesses it is impossible to trial these people. It should be like for like an far as I'm concerned but again sadly it's not. A big hug & thanks to all who do such a heartbreaking yet uplifting job of saving these poor friends from those who value their friendship so little. This is disgusting. Would you put a bracelet or harness on a baby and watch it slowly embed into their skin as they grow too big for it? How is the person responsible for this not in jail? This isn't even considering the fact that halters should never be left on a horse when they aren't under some sort of supervision. It's so awful that humans allow these things to happen to innocent, defenceless animals.
