VW Golf GTI Clubsport versus Golf R at Portimao

- Onboard in a Golf GTI Clubsport (three-door, manual on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres) chasing a Golf R (five-door, DSG, also on Cup 2 tyres) round Portimao circuit. For comparison the base weight of a manual three-door GTI Clubsport is 1,375kg and an equivalent manual three-door R is 1,476kg, both to EU including driver. In both cases DSG adds 20kg and the five-door is +30kg so in this instance the R was at least 150kg heavier - and it shows! The different fractions of a second per lap, were due to the different drivers skills.
Better would be time each car driven by the same driver on a hot lap.
The Golf clubsport is the track focused Golf - of course it is superior around a track! It has the same motor/gearbox/brakes in a better balanced more focused chassis, and 100kg lighter!
The lighter Clubsport is the better car to me. By the way, what dopey track allows fast laps without a helmet?? Wouldn't catch me doing that, and I've raced for over 20 years.

Dare I suggest VW told the R driver not to try too hard? After all it is a press launch for the Clubsport?

Oh these gran turismo drivers talking about racing lines and saying how bad these drivers are.They're pure gold in it's finnest form.The PR people at Mclaren and Ferrari are fighting to get them into the racing team.
Bet the first time they drive like in this video they will end up on the trees or they will blow the shit out of the trans if they try to do a downshift like the one at 2:38
Sorry but I don't care what anyone in the comments says, these guys can bloody drive, don't forget their in two cars they only just got into a few hours prior on a track which they potentially don't know that well. Id like to see a lot of people here even attempt that downshift at 2:38

one can easily see that the Clubsport S cou'd easily overtake the R on long stretch line..... the S is way more powerful than the R.... i'd like to know why has vw not strapped a DSG on the Clubsport S.... can anyone answer that

Pholela Mapeyi This is a normal Clubsport, not Clubsport S. Clubsport S is faster than a 2016 Golf R coz it have 310 hp & its faster on a track. But the 2017 Golf R have the same power & 4 Wheel Drive. So ithink the 2017 Golf R should be the fastest at the moment. They say the new 2017 Golf R is faster than a Porsche 718 Boxter !!! ;)
hang on.... you say both cars are dsg, but the fella in clubsport shifts with a stick :D

The guy in the GTi keeps short shifting the gears at critical points, if he had let them run longer he could have easily got passed the R

The golf r driver was not a very good track driver.... Obvious by his chosen lines.... Clubsport driver was hardly any better..... This video shows no relevance to either car in a comparison

Give me Club sport with a manual any day primarily because the Golf R is a heavy pig for a hatchback. The Clubsport with a manual is under 3000 Ibs which is considered light in today's standard S.

My observation would be that the guy in the golf at the back has exceptionally slow gear changing skills... I'm no racer but I change gears faster then he does..

Boring Golf hunts another boring Golf. Both the same cars, same engine, only little technic differences. Bring back good old R32.
