- "One Step Up" is a song by Bruce Springsteen from his eighth studio album, Tunnel of Love (1987). It was released as the third single from the album, following "Brilliant Disguise" and the title track. It reached position #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart in the United States. It also reached #2 on the U.S. Album Rock Tracks chart, giving Springsteen three straight top two tracks from the album. The song was only released as a single in America
Like several other songs on the album, the song reflects the impending breakup of the marriage between Springsteen and then-wife Julianne Phillips. The song's lyrics are poetic, understated, emotional and eloquent. The song begins by describing a house with a broken furnace and a car that doesn't start, which serve as metaphors for the couple's relationship.[3][6] Similar metaphors in the song are a bird that won't sing and church bells that won't ring for a new bride-to-be. Although the couple has been together for some time, they haven't learned from their experiences and continue to fight and slam doors.The lyrics refer to the couple's relationship as their "dirty little war. Finally, the singer finds himself at a bar wondering whether to hook up with another woman there, while remembering a dream he had the night before about dancing with his wife, with the dance poignantly echoing the song's title (one step up and two steps back). The singer is self-aware enough to recognize his share of responsibility for the couple's difficulties, as demonstrated in particular by the line: "When I look at myself I don't see/The man I wanted to be". Although this is a song about a marriage breaking up, the backing vocals were sung by the woman who eventually became Springsteen's wife, Patti Scialfa.

@@ladytron5000 Just means he played it with heavy emphasis on vocals and acoustic guitar; not a full band electrified version of the song. But Yeh, is this truly acoustic? There is electric guitar etc.
This is one of the best versions of this song I have ever heard. When one speaks out of the depths of his soul. This is a very hard place for a man to go. We have all been there at 1 time or another.

I think this is one of the greatest ballads Springsteen had ever sung, written and you can hear that in his voice, he's passionate about his songs, and that's why, there's no one that can sing like Bruce Springsteen and I say this with all respect to all the singers that are singing right now and to the singers of the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s and today, He's such a magnificent singer, songwriter, he's a legend and he'll always be a legend, his songs will always be timeless including this song right here, this is a timeless passionate live version, almost an Early 1990s Version of this right here. The Guitar Sound in these versions like the album version is almost like U2 vibes!. You can name I'm on Fire, Thunder Road, Atlantic City, Nebraska and others the greatest Springsteen Ballads, but I don't think there will never be a great ballad like this song, it can't be beat. Springsteen is amazing at what he does! And that is why he's one of the best singers out there and he will always be!
