  • In 2021, the number of people risking their lives to cross the Darién Gap, a treacherous, roadless, 60-mile stretch of jungle connecting Colombia with Panama, has spiked. Not only is the crossing physically grueling and risky, but people also experience being attacked, robbed, and sexually assaulted on the route. Lis, a Venezuelan migrant who recently travelled through the Darién Gap, shares her story of surviving sexual violence. “They attacked us three times,” she said. “The first two times nothing happened, but the third time something did happen. This was when they abused… everything.”
Between May and August, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) treated 105 women who had been sexually assaulted. MSF is reiterating its demand that the governments of Colombia and Panama establish safe alternative routes between the two countries and deploy the necessary protection mechanisms in their territories to prevent more needless death and suffering. What people are willing to suffer for freedom, and here in the United States we abuse and take advantage of it. God help these people please.

Idk, I live in a "3rd world" (Mexico), and people get by... the only thing I would flee is cartel violin ce, but if they are that desperate, why not go south? To Chile, Peru, Argentina? Our countries grow food easily, even if we are poor, there are fruit trees, beans, etc... and we have water, we get by. I can't think of anything that would make me go through a rout where I know I will be a6 used 100%

The US cannot take in everyone who wants to come. The problem is not with the US. The problem is with the sending companies.

Some times this stories are not true .they just want people to feel sorry for them so they can stay in the country.becouse if the say o all is goodinmy country or the trip they get send back.we got to many problems in other country's like usa .we can not bring everybody to usa sorry but most when they get arrested in usa are gonna get send back to there country .the law is the law .

Sometimes they aren't, but that's irrelevant to this case, these are clear victims, it was even legitimized by doctors without borders.
There are a lot of different stories and certain regions they need to cross are perilous, the Darien gap especially. We know what random road bandits to do to their own countrymen, why wouldnt terrorists like FARC or ELN or certain cartels act any different?
If people are willing to take the risk it's generally because a chance at getting sent back is better than what they have waiting for them back home. Most people don't want to leave. There are opportunists and human garbage mixed in during any time of mass migration, but there are more of stories of tragedy that lead to desperation.

Just so you all know. Many of them make up such stories once they reach USA, to get asylum. Or at least get better prison conditions than other men in the same prison. I am not saying she is lying. But these stories are not always true. There is a woman in my town, when she was caught in the USA, she told the same story to judge and police, but was still deported back. She claimed gang raped multiple times during the journey. But some men who were with her group also got deported after a few months from her deport date, when they told us the story, they told she is totally lying. However, the harsh conditions are true and they saw dead bodies too.

Okay but shouldn't we still believe victims regardless of what percentage lie about it happening? The point is that this DOES happen, and it is utterly horrific. Most people in North America will never experience anything remotely close to it, and then for people to choose not to believe them? That is heartbreaking :(
