This video shows how to manually install mobile home earth anchors by hand using the Earth Anchor Hand Tool. The Earth Anchor Hand Tool let's you install a 4 foot helical anchor into the ground using just a socket and wrench instead of an expensive earth anchor machine. With the Earth Anchor Hand Tool, you can install anchors using the inline installation method, where the tops of the anchors are slanted at a 45 degree angle toward the I-beam under the trailer. The inline method gives the anchors more holding power than the vertical installation method used with the machines. Also, the inline method doesn't require using stabilizer plates.
Installing anchors by hand makes more sense if you are only occasionally installing anchors, because it saves the cost of buying or renting an $800 machine, or hiring a contractor.. Even if you have a machine, there isn't enough room under the trailer for a machine to install anchors slanted toward the I - Beam. That's why anchors are usually installed vertically outside the trailer, so they can use a machine.
This video was made while the ground was still frozen, so we we dug a starter hole 12" deep. The starter hole helps the anchor start drilling into the ground, and also makes sure it goes in at a 45 degree angle. In warmer weather, when the ground is soft, a starter hole is not needed,. To make the ground even softer, you can pour water over the ground.
I would say that anyone in reasonably good physical condition should be able to drill an earth anchor into the ground by hand in about 15 minutes. Installing earth anchors by hand saves you the cost of buying a machine, or hiring a contractor, and it also gives you a good workout that can save you money in gym fees..

Yes, it is possible, and it is also a good workout that can save you money on gym fees. Make sure to use a wrench with a long handle. You can slide a pipe over the wrench to make it longer. Thanks for your comment.

Mobile home set up and installation is hard work , especially the anchors . Takes a lot of patience to get it done properly . Great job on the anchors !! I used to do this work in my younger years . Your video gave me some practical insight for doing this myself. Using the masonry bit and drill is a great idea. Seems like the earth anchors would drive a little easier if the threads had some taper to them, like the point of a screw. I was wondering if you made up the socket adapter, or if it came from the anchor supplier. Thanks for taking the time to make the video while your working. It gives the next guy a little more to work with.
Thanks for the comment. The masonry bit and drill were used in the video, because the ground was still partly frozen from cold weather, it was in early march. If the ground is soft, then the drill is not needed, just dig a shallow hole to allow the earth anchor to get a grip in the ground. If you pour some water into the hole, it makes the ground softer. In soft ground, it's possible to turn an earth anchor into the ground in 15 minutes.

I can't say thank you enough. You are so patient and detailed oriented. You go one step at a time. The guy that did mine wrapped the strap around in a coil method. I told him it wasn't right. I'm not strong enough to do it myself or I would've. He also went 45⁰ opposite direction. And the worst part he buried just the auger portion & then poured cement on it 😮. Now I'm going to have to by new augers and just cut those others off bcz he also left a good foot sticking out of the ground. SMH. I do have a question. He used screws to attach strap to cross beam. Have those straps lost their tensile strength to reuse?

You could try to dig the anchors up and reset, altho more work. Strangely enough, many people install anchors angled away from trailer, not seeing that it's weaker that way.

Could you dig Say a 12 inch wide and 12 to 18 inch deep Hole and pour Concrete around it, like a concrete pad. Seems that would also be a lot stronger and perhaps easier? Thanks in advance for answering

Thanks Dude - I guess I can also place them angled towards the middle of the house? You need a drill with 1/2" and 3/4" (whatever) sockets. What about strapping Lanai's down (all brick underneath) - think I could go over the roof with cloth strapping, or inside and attach to hurricane Mounts up on the aluminum beams? thanks again!

How taught are the straps drawn? Im not asking for a torque spec on the bolt. If i grab the strap should i be able to wiggle it 2"-3" inches perpendicular? Or should it be more rigid?
I haven't found anything specific on tightness of straps. I would just tighten them to where there isn't any slack. The main point I'd say is the straps aren't needed to hold the mobile home down in normal conditions, where there isn't a strong wind. The purpose of the straps is to resist the pulling force exerted on a mobile home by strong winds. This means that in normal conditions, the straps don't need to be torqued down, only that they have no slack so if there is a pulling force exerted, the straps can keep the mobile home from being moved.
It's not like a car fan belt that depends on the tension of the belt to grip the pulleys.
I just got a 12x32 shed-to-home, how many achors do I need? it doesn't have metal I-beams, so I'll have to figure out how to wrap the hook part around a floor beam somehow... also, thank you for your informative video!
I would suggest calling the manufacturer tech support for number of anchors. A shed may be different from a mobile home.

Hello! Is this hurricane proof. My dad is getting knee surgery and owns and RV. I need to anchot it down for hurricane season and have no idea what I'm doing. We live in Florida. Any tips?
The anchors hold the trailer down in case of strong winds. Follow the instructions in the video for anchoring. Contact yor RV manufacturer for specific instructions on anchoring your model of RV. The anchor hand tool is available on ebay. In case of a hurricane, find the nearest storm shelter, and make sure you have insurance on your RV.
I can’t imagine a impact working, but a torque multiplier tool and then your ratchet would be a better idea. Later in the comments you give links to regulations, that would be good right up front. Thanks for the video though, very informative.

I live in Alabama and I have set up a bunch of mobile homes the way he's screwing that in the ground is at the wrong angle that's going to pull straight out he's saying 45 degree angle the strap has to be at a 45 degree angle not the anchor the anchor has to be straight down in the ground and the strap has to be at a 45 degree angle and if it's not you have to cross strap it and hook it all the way to the other side of the frame he would not pass inspection in Alabama
Thanks for the comment. It's true what you say that vertically installed anchors with stabilizer plates are approved, but the 45 degree inline installation method is also approved, and has been tested and found to be the strongest method when a long enough anchor is used.
The vertical installation method is most commonly used because it's difficult or impossible to get an anchor auger machine under a trailer, so they install the anchor from outside the edge of the trailer vertically, then they strengthen it by using a stabilizer plate. The combination of an anchor along with a stabilizer plate gives this method enough holding power to meet the regulations.
When an anchor is installed by hand, it's possible to get under the trailer to screw the anchor into the ground at a 45 degree angle with the helix pointed away from the trailer, and the head toward the trailer. This 45 degree, inline installation method also provides the 4,725 pounds of holding power required by the regulations. Pretty sure if you angled the anchor the other direction, base towards the MH, the shear force will be pulling against about 3 tons of dirt instead of just pulling the anchor out of the hole. But what do I know. I’ve only done this on a shed but feel safer with my method.
I understand your logic, and a lot of people install anchors angled away from the trailer. Look in the HUD Manufactured home installation guide, it explains why it's better to have the anchor angled toward the trailer. Briefly, when the anchor is angled away from the trailer, i.e. the top of the anchor is tipped outward relative to the trailer, then if there is a pulling force on the anchor such as due to wind, then the top of the anchor tips toward the trailer, basically the anchor shaft is the only resistance to the pull, instead of the auger blades.
According to the Wind Zones do I have this correct that anyone living in Wind Zone no 1 needs to put their earth augers at a 90 degree angle? I would think that straight up and down might be better for "calmer" areas. If the augers could be put straight up and down what about digging a hole about 4 ft deep and then pouring concrete into the hole and inserting the ground augers by hand while the concrete is still wet?
The inline installation method is strongest. But maybe if you put enough concrete in there it may be as strong. Best to research it.
The problem with the vertical installation method is this; imagine what happens if the wind blows the trailer sideways; the trailer will pull sideways on the strap, and that will pull the anchor sideways. If the anchor is vertical and the strap pulls sideways on the top of the anchor, what happens? The top of the anchor will tilt sideways. In this case, the spiral helixes at the bottom of the anchor are not doing anything. The only thing resisting the sideways pull is the thin vertical metal rod of the anchor. The anchor rod will slice through the ground and keep tilting sideways with little resistance until the anchor approaches 45 degree angle toward the trailer. Then, if the trailer keeps pulling sideways on the anchor, the helixes will start to offer resistance and give more holding power. By that time, the trailer may be off the piers. That's why stabilizer plates are used with the vertical installation method. The plates resist the sideways pull on the anchor. The plates are good, and meet the regulations, but still, the 45 degree angle inline method is stronger, especially if you use a longer anchor. The vertical method is popular, because it can be done with a machine; saves a lot of time and work. But if you have time, and want some exercise, and also want to save money, then the 45 degree method is useful. It also has the added advantage of making a stronger anchor. It can also save you money in gym fees.

How many anchors do you need? Is it like 1 every 10 feet of mobile home or something?
The number of anchors varies with the size of the trailer, the height from the ground, and the distance between the I-Beams under the trailer. For the HUD government guidelines, see page 20 of the Model Manufactured Home Installation Standards at this link -

For example, according to the chart on page 20, a 12 foot single wide trailer, 25 inches from the ground, with I-Beams up to 82.5 inches apart, should have earth anchors every 14.2 feet. This would mean that a 70 foot long trailer would need 5 anchors on each side, for a total of ten anchors.
You have to study the chart a little to understand it.
Also, check with your state government for state guidelines, and your city building inspector for city guidelines.

Hello, i live in the mountains of CA, WIND ZONE 1, i have very rocky soil, more rock than dirt often. I would do this if I could, but I don't think zi could drive anything in. I'm talking rocks 1-3 feet across. There's gotta be a way to do this on my area myself. Does anyone have a recommendation? My mobile is not easy to crawl under either. It's 48x12 long and about 20 inches from ground. I'm looking for easy and cheap
Try renting a jack hammer, and dig with a shovel.
Before you do, try putting in an anchor by hand, if you are lucky, you might bypass rocks.
Is this a how NOT to install an anchor, or hardest, most complicated, and wrong way, i've ever seen someone install any kind of anchor, just food for thought, what would happen if you installed your tent stakes at that angle? It would immediately pull straight out...

Yes, the buckle is part of the strap. See - mobilehomepartsstore.com
To install the strap, start from the inside top corner of the I-beam of the mobile home. Slide the end of the strap over the top of the I-beam then bring it around 360 degrees around the outside of I-beam back under the I-beam and back up up to the top inside corner where you started, then slide the strap thru the buckle and then across the top of the I-beam, and then down to the anchor, where you connect the strap with a strap bolt. Basiclly, you are looping it around the I-beam, the buckle ends up at the top inside corner of the I-beam.

you should get a rachet that rachet's. or if you like repositioning the socket every turn just use a box wrench, bonus of the box wrench is its a bit lighter. keep fighting the good fight sir.

would you recommend using tractor trailer ratchet strap to tie down a mobile home?
It's not ideal. Steel band that are used for mobiles have an incredibly high tension rating and won't degrade the same way a ratchet strap would.

Wouldn't the anchor be stronger if the 45 was going the other way?
Many people do install anchors at an angle away from the trailer because they use the big machine to install the anchors, and the machine won't fit underneath the trailer, but it is actually stronger if the anchor is at 45 degrees toward the trailer.
If the anchor is at 45 degrees pointing away from the trailer, a stabilizer plate must be added for extra strength. If the trailer tries to shift in a strong wind and pulls on the anchor, then the anchor tilts toward the trailer, and the only thing resisting the tilting is the stabilizer plate. The metal rod of the anchor does nothing to prevent the tilting.
On the other hand, when the anchor is installed at 45 degrees toward the trailer, then if the trailer shifts in a strong wind, then it tries to pull the anchor up out of the ground against the spiral helix. The upward force of the helix spreads upward at a 45 degree angle, and creates up to 4 - 5 tons of of resistance to being pulled out of the ground.

I had a new home put down in July and in Sept. about 5 anchors came up, one came up 5 inches.
Try the inline installatiin in the video. Use at least 4 foot anchors.
It all looks like a great system but what's the shear strength of the anchor bolt?
Here is a link to a publication by FEMA on ground anchors that gives specifications on anchor performance. Look at pages 7-7, which discusses causes of anchor failure. FEMA discusses failure of anchor welds, but doesn't mention failure of anchor bolts.
Also, the chart on page 7-12 shows that the anchor design load is higher for anchors installed using the 45 degree inline installation method.
Never heard of putting in the anchors at that angle. When they anchored my mobile home the anchors went in at an angle from the outside to inside

For my mobile home, i put in 14 anchors, with straps they cost $25 each. It took @ one hour each to put the anchors into the ground and install the straps .
Okay I must be missing something important. The only way you can get ground anchors into the ground is to create a "special tool" to grip the head of the anchor to twist it in the ground. There seems to be NO BLOODY TOOL one can purchase to do this. Every video i watch someone has made something hand made. We don't all have that ability or a welding kit at home. How on earth do other people put ground anchors into the soil? Very puzzling...

How is the house attached to that base?
The trailler house sits on concrete block piers. The anchors hold the house down. When setting up a trailer house, the piers have to have wood blocks on top to make the house sit level.

Why not just a 24" pipe wrench all they down? Just curious.
Depends on the soil, soft or hard, also any roots or rocks. In the video the ground was partially frozen. If more torque is needed, the pipe wrench may slip. Its worth a try.
This was painful to watch. You should invest in some tools. But it was very informative great video.
It's not that hard to put in earth anchors by hand. About 15 minutes each in normal soil. The video was made when the soil was partially frozen, so we used the auger bit to loosen it. If you hit a root or rock, just move over a few inches. It's a good work out and saves money in gym fees!

Yes, anchors are required on each side of a mobile home. The number of anchors and spacing between anchors depends on the distance between I-Beams under the mobile home, the height from the ground, and soil types. What gauge strap is used (and required) for a setup like this?
The strap, also called a frame tie is 1.25 inch wide and 10 feet long, made of galvsnized or stainless steel. When installing, cut the strap about twelve inches longer than distance between anchor and frame, after strap is wrapped around the frame, see the installation video on how to do this. Not sure of the gauge of the metal in strap.

Can you rent a tool to install hold down device into ground?
Possibly an impact driver, like they use in a car tire shop, but not sure if it has enough torque for eart anchors. The earth anchor installation machines cost $800, not sure if they can be rented.

You won't need to go to the gym either.

Couldn't you just use a impact gun on the bolt to tighting the strap?
Yes, if it has enough torque then that would work.

Thanks for the comment. We asked several people who work with impact drivers, such as at a car tire repair shop. Their opinion was that an impact driver wouldn't turn an earth anchor into the ground. The only way to be sure would be to try it. Someday, if I have an impact driver, I'll try it.

Seems theres much easier ways to do this why not attach a heavy duty drill to it
An earth anchor installation machine is basically a drill that can drill an anchor into the ground in a minute. It costs over $800. One problem with the machine is that it won't fit under a trailer, so it won't allow installing the anchors using the inline installation method. Installing anchors by hand can be done under the trailer, and it is also cheaper. One other point is that installing anchors by hand is good exercise that can save you money in gym fees.
It's not a trailer it's a mobile home, trailers are pulled by cars and pickup trucks

Hi how many anchors you need per i bean and what is the space between them?i was looking into it but to many different information around.one says 4 anchors on each side on a single mobile home 8 total the other says one every 6 feet that will bring the total to 12 total of anchors on a single mobile home
Look online for the HUDMobile home installation guide. Gives the government rules.
Depends on trailer length. @14 for an 80 foot long trailer.
