    I have learned the strap is supposed to wrap around a girder, just a bolt thru is not going to give the full capacity of a strap for holding power. Honestly could have looped the strap with a hook end like they use on mobile homes, the strap has to overlap itself. On my shed, I bought 8 of these 30 inch anchors, dug holes, and put them in concrete. I set the heads right next to the 4x4 on the ground, my shed base is six 4x4's that sit on plastic on the ground. Then I got 5/8 galvanized bolts, and ran them thru the hole in the anchor head right into the sides of the 4x4. This is for a 12x16 shed. I did buy strap, but used it to secure the roof structure, wall studs, 2x6 box framing and 4x4's using nails thru small drilled holes all in line in the strap. That helps hold everything together say in a strong storm will want to pull the shed apart. I used inset wood cross bracing, not sheathing to hold walls together, so it is pretty strong. Since it is a gambrel roof and 19 feet to the peak, a lot of potential wind force could blow on the building, maybe even blow it over, but not anymore.

    The digging weakens the anchor's resistance. Also, your anchor bolt needs to have at least 5 turns.

    I have one of those helical anchors that was designed to be used three in a set to tie down a small airplane. I use it to lock up my trailer if I am away from home and have to unhitch it from the car. I believe that the instructions on mine say to screw the anchor into undisturbed soil for the best results. The science should be the same for a shed.

    • @WoodsTreeFarm
      @WoodsTreeFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're not incorrect. Ground anchors are made to go into undisturbed soil. These anchors are made for a much larger structure. They still went into undisturbed soil over half their length. I think the holding power is more than sufficient for the size of the building.

      That is my plan, use a bolt and nut to secure the shed to the mobile home anchor. The anchor goes straight down into the earth, no angle is needed. Since that leaves a 2" gap, use a spacer block to fill gap between anchor and shed wood. Either use 5/8 or 1/2" wide real long bolts and nuts. I suppose lag bolts will work too. Could use galvanized carriage bolts that fit the square hole in the anchor and nut on the other side with a washer too. The bolt idea works well if the shed is close to the ground, I honestly think that is stronger than drilling a hole in the steel strap and using lags into the wood. My shed will sit on 4x4 skids, skids aligned with the band board of the lower floor and skids directly on the ground. I should be able to bolt into the skid wood. If I bolt in to the band rim wood of the floor, I would definitely use bolt and washer and nut, not a lag screw.

    I am surprised that code would allow you to dig the holes to put the anchor in. I whole idea of the auger is to screw it into the ground to hole in place. I just can't see it being as efficient with loose dirt on top. All women watching, take note how Phil is having a hard time with turning the bolt. This could have easily been avoided had he had the right tools for the job. So my point is that always allow men to buy a tool that they are wanting, it makes life a whole lot easier. Thank you for the video, I am currently putting a shed in for our new pig and had concerns with the wind blowing it over. You video taught me what I am going to need to do to remedy that. See, a young pup can teach an old dog once in a while. Thank you!

    • @WoodsTreeFarm
      @WoodsTreeFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think there is still plenty of holding power. I made sure to tamp the soil in the hole real good. I could always go back and put a bag of concrete in each hole. My understanding is that's actually what they do with mobile home anchors.

      @@howardwilliams8993 agreed. Also the anchors should be installed at a 45 degree angle, angled in line with the 45 degree strapping. Another option is stabilizing plates against the anchors, or as he mentionedin the video, concretethem in. As he has it now, a high wind could cause the anchors to slice right through the earth.

    You should not dig holes for the anchors. The anchors will work much better in undisturbed soils. Digging the holes defeats the purpose of using these anchors. They are designed for undisturbed soils. There is a danger of the anchors pulling out of the soil since you have only 15" of soil holding these anchors .

    • @dabbydoodle4801
      @dabbydoodle4801 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you dig the footer hole 5 inches in diameter and 30" deep, pour concrete to set the anchors in place, let cure 3 days, then attach the strap to the shed or cabin, then through the slotted hole screws and adjust. Anchors should be at a slight angle towards the shed or cabin. You can also use 2 screws and attach the strap around the stringer and through both screw slots and then tighten/adjust...retighten periodically as needed.

    The whole point of your exercise is to meet an inspectors opinions, wishes, and needs pursuant to an inspection.
    I humbly suggest you consult him after having designed each step. And, no, I am not kidding. Get his opinion of every aspect of the process. Is a prehole dig acceptable? Not your opinion, nor what you think, it's the inspectors'. Is manual drive acceptable for the anchor? His opinion over rides yours. Can you cut the strap before inspection? Does the inspector require a torque reading on the tension? Is a torque reading adequate? Is a tensionometer required?
    Why would anyone go into a project and not have a FACTUAL STATEMENT from the inspector as to just what is acceptable?
    My last phone conversation with my inspector, I wrote the phone conversation notes in the form of an email AS WE SPOKE. I SENT HIM THAT EMAIL while we spoke, for him TO READ, and then I EDITTED TO MEET his requirements, and sent it all back again, and requested his return email accept my offers, BEFORE we got off the phone. You know it's funny I never got a followup visit on the complaint. It helps I think that I did a 17 point home inspection condition list in a weekend at about that time, and that commercial inspector passed us for the loan requirement. I suspect a little trust and depending on the commercial inspector.
    Your summation as to lessons learned is not correct. How do pro's do it? You did not cover that. How do inspectors accept it. You seem to offer no experience or inspectors' guidance. You have an advantage out there. The inspector has more potential to accept you socially, and more time to want to be there for the society, the people of the county. He may contribute easier than in a city of millions like I am in.
    You dug away half the hold depth, that defeats half the strength assumed to exist in the undisturbed ground.
    You may like a drive into the anchor occasionally when you see it is resisting being driven. (Personally I like to predrill with a masonry bit about the size of the shaft to assist the anchor.....Is that acceptable? Not an answer from you or me, it needs to be answered from the inspector.)
    You filled the hole taking space you needed to subsequently travel tools through. Back fill is an end of project procedure.
    Is it actually your intention and experience that doing a project, completing it, and then calling for an inspection, which intersects your needs and the needs of the inspector, to whit meeting the inspector FOR THE FIRST TIME>>>>>EVER after the conclusion is accomplished is an adequate path to success in project inspections?
    I suggest several of us may have found this course less than adequate or smooth.
    (I'd REALLY like to see your video on a concrete project, with inspections. May you NEVER have to rebuild a mat or tear out a driveway, and repour it.)

    Hey, what length earth anchors do I need to anchor down this shed?
    The internet answers, for your area and soil type, 40".
    The guy says, that sounds like too much work. I'll just buy the 30" ones and dig half way down, so they're really in about 15". To top it off, I'll completely ignore the requirements for the amout of overlap and number of wraps of the strapping within the engineered anchor system.
    Then I'll show everyone on TH-cam exactly how to be lazy and cut corners.
    Later, I'll complain to other old guys how lazy this new generation is, and how my dad raised me with integrity and knowing the value of hard work.
    Then I'll head home, but on the way, grab my wife and her three boyfriends who are sleeping in my bed some breakfast in bed. I'm sure they've worked up quite an appetite after hogging her all night.
