    🤣 We love ya Bob! We won't blame you!! That's a Ratrodology driveshaft...it's held to different specifications and standards!!!

    When I used to make my own driveshaft when I was circle tracking I would put a half a gallon of coolant in the shaft before I welded it up and once the driveshaft was turning it would sling out and balance the shaft. It actually worked really well. Works on the same principle as centrimatic wheel wieghts.

    I sure like that 351M engine you got out of that Thunderbird. It's an engine that never got the respect it deserves. Bought my Ranchero new in '78 with a 351M and still have it. Always started with one key turn and never saw the inside of a repair shop. Put a Thunderbird front end on it years ago and rather drive it than my Vette. Comp cam singing bumpy bump all day.

    Been doing my own all my life. A couple of comments.
    1. If you do not remove the balance weights on the tube and keep the universal joint end in the original phasing it will be in balance. I have a large tubing cutter that I use so my cut is square .

    I have done many driveshafts similar to yours. First cut you off a short piece of the shaft say 3inches, that you can chuck up in the lath, machine off the weld, that makes the end yoke square, then cut the tube square by wrapping a large piece of paper around the tube squaring off the sides of the paper will give you a square line to cut on . Now assemble the shaft exactly as you did. After truing it up and tacking, weld all the way around in one pass then read the indicator. Pour a cup of water on the high side of the weld until it comes back to with in .010 again . You can reheat the weld and cool it if you have to. Some of my shafts have been to 150 MPH without balancing never a single complaint

    Professor Bob of the university of rat rodology, you are funny you guys got plenty of money oh that is funny. When you have a terminal illness you're poor as poor gets. I still have to do everything the cheap way myself, maybe you could spare your master mechanic for a while. Sure could use ole Red around here got plenty of work for him. Betcha he reads this comment and runs for the hills. Lol well hopefully it stops raining here so i can get something accomplished soon. Like I said got plenty to do but don't feel like doing it.

    Back in the 60's I lived in San Diego county and built a few 'dune buggies ' . To shorten the drive shafts we just cut out what we didn't need with pipe cutter or hacksaw then clamped the two ends to a piece of angler iron and welded her up. Never had any problems but we were just running around in the desert not cruz'n the highways.

    Great video Bob ,thank you teacher ,and thank you for the disclaimer ! Lol,i don't think you'll have any problem with balance ,since you checked run out ,at only 10th's,i love those dial indicators, thank God i have one from my days of racing stock cars ,i bought Speedway driveshaft (31") for the Imca modified ,not balance ,was off the garage sale ,and not balanced ,i never felt a vibration from it at six k rpm ,so ought to be good ,just remember to grease ,and replace the u joints every now ,and then .Quick question ,any way to cut a carbon fiber drive shaft for a Rat Rod ? I found a good one down at the yard for ten bucks!Thank you,take care Bob

    I always watch TH-cam on our TV and there's no way to like or comment on the videos I watch. So I have to like and comment from my laptop. But I'm wondering if you and the other channels get credit for me and thousands of others watching it that way.
    Anyways great video Bob! and don't forget to practice that social distancing with your buddy Red...

    • @RatRodBobBuilds
      @RatRodBobBuilds  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is what you do on TV .. well my ROKU anyways. Click on the video while it is playing and you'll see some options ... three vertical dots on the left side .. click on them and you'll get some more options .. thumbs up-down HD and so on. Another tip .... before playing the vid .... click and hold on it and you get some more options ... like ... not interested ... don't recommend channel ... etc. I haven't found a way to do comments yet. Maybe in the future they'll make it happen. I hear ya on the social distancing ... thought about going to the parts store and Red said nope ... order on eBay instead. May have to wait a few days but I have plenty other things to do in the meantime. This will pass and all will be well! God willing!

    Hey Bob. I am glad that you posted this video. I have to make a driveshaft for my Fargo. I was going to send it out to a driveshaft shop, but after seeing this video, I think I will try to do it myself. As you said, the worst that can happen is that it will break. One question is why would you not use your chop saw to cut the drive shaft?? Thanks for sharing.👍👍
