For Research type videos I have many other in depth videos specifically about water parameters and setups, breeding advice, types of shrimp etc... so please go take a look at my channel for in depth research videos.
Hey Shrimp People!
Today I go over a few common mistakes made by shrimp keepers. Hopefully this will help save people the hassle of making such mistakes (mistakes I made too!!!)
The shrimp featured in this video are Red Zebra Pintos (a few other types are in this tank, like multistripes) The Soil used is Akadama and the parameters are-
PH 6 / KH 0 / GH 5 / TDS 120
TEMP 66-70 °F

Actually that is the way to keep shrimps. Many here maintain their shrimps tank like garbage water and they think it's cool

Would you be willing to to do a video on exactly what plants you have in this tank? I especially like the ones that look like a type of bushy fern at the bottom of this one. Plus all the colors of the different plants combine are very beautiful! If you would, thank you so much!
That bushy fern js probably Christmas moss or java moss

I have a years old colony of shrimp I want to selectively breed up to snuff and perhaps start selling as a side hobby.
I can’t imagine anywhere near as many people know about shrimp and how easy/fun to keep they are.

My dad is giving me a fish tank soon so I think cherry shrimp are nice could I keep snails in the tank too ?
Yes indeed!
Being a Petco Aquatic specialist I recommend people to use Water test strips. And also even if we do have them in stock to be very careful because they may die being introduced to tank the wrong way.
Is that like a custodial engineer...lol
I am actually not a big fan of testing. I understand that you need to have specific rates, but are the rates reliable? I mean most shrimp are homebred on tapwater they remain in a tank with 2 or 3 plants, no special soils and just a sponge filter.
In my opinion it is better to create your own ecosystem.
So lots of plants, a couple of fish, snails, and your shrimps. Put some leaves in the tank and you basically have everything you need.
The waste of your animals and the leaves will turn into nitrate and then ammonia which will be amazing for your plants and they will break that down.
I suggest some floating plants with long roots. It will break down ammonia really fast and its an amazing place for your shrimp to feed off.
I kept blue dreams in a 60 liter tank with apple snails and rasbora galaxy's.
Started with 10 shrimp, 5 galaxy's and 2 snails.
After a year I had over a 100 shrimp a school of 20 galaxy's and more snails then I needed.
And I never did a water change. Just topping it off when it's gets a little lower.
Now I'm doing it all over again this time with orange rili shrimp, blue tail rabbit snails and yellow clams (wich is also a natural filtration). I have around 30 plants in the tank with 1 floating plant and some moss on spiderwood. It's so amazing to see.

My Amano shrimp couldn’t handle my hard water. Would die during molting a lot. I started using fish water from the pet store and haven’t lost one since

Over 45 years with aquariums and I have actually never owned meters or test kits. My well water is hell on my pipes and fixtures but the critters seem to not mind it. I dont run heaters ever and minimal filtration systems, everyone loves to overcomplicate nature
Your probably just lucky that your parameters are within good range. Many people can't succeed, and its often the parameters. I don't run heaters either, and my filtration is simple sponge filters.
aquariums are not representations of nature. in fact it is the exact opposite, and as much as your fishes/shrimps are hardy, you do want to mimic the kind of environment they thrive in naturally.
I had also been fine not using all that stuff for my fish tanks for 30 years.
Then went into shrimp keeping its next level hard them things are not as forgiving

@@finalbattle777 even if you can prove that, do you suggest that everyone adjust their water parameters to match the species? How do you recommend we go about that? How often should we test our water to ensure we’re consistent in our mix? What about things that we don’t measure, like health of our nitrifying bacterial colonies, levels of fertilizers in the water? What about ensuring no “pests” make it in and mess with our carefully set up and very delicate life support system?
Here’s the thing, maybe you’re right and I’m wrong, but I think you’re missing the point of aquarium keeping for most people.

Researching before my first attempt with shrimp, we uneducated Aussies call them prawns but what's in a name haha. So anyway thanks, this vid is a great help and also great for relaxing to with the sounds off.

Yes its akadama but the substrate I recommend is Brightwell (If it’s available to you)
Thanks for the video. I am somewhat new to shrimp so your videos are very helpful and your tanks are gorgeous. I have tank envy and have even considered redoing my tank but don’t know how to get all the shrimp out and would feel terrible if I missed some. That is part of my problem. I started with 6 blue shrimp....but now I have over a hundred in a Fluval 5.5 gallon. They are thriving right now, with many variations of the blue, but I am concerned about too many. I have culled a few into a nano fish tank hoping they breed as quickly. So what do you do when you have too many shrimp???? Please help.
Hi Mynala! Thanks for watching :) Usually 100 shrimp in a 5 gallon isn't too much, so long as they weren't all added at one time(which yours weren't) I'd keep up weekly water changes to keep up the good water quality and floating plants to reduce nitrates. You can always thin out your colony by selling 10 or 20 or more to local hobbyists. None of my tanks really have more then a few hundred shrimp at one time because I constantly thin the colony by selling from those groups to keep the numbers manageable.

i got shrimp ina pet store for my betta tank and my worry was the betta eating them but it was very planted to they had many hiding spots i went to the bathroom and atleast 6 shrimp were on top of the lid and the filter and all over my coffee table i was jus so confused i didnt kno shrimp jump like that

It isn't really advised to mix taiwan bees and pintos... Better to keep various patterned pintos together and various taiwan bee patterns together

really depends on what type of fish or shrimp you choose not every type needs a heater. Shrimp for example do not need a heater
@@ShrimpLife I would like crystal reds, the temperature needs to be 70-70 degrees Fahrenheit. How can I be sure the temperate will be that?
@@harveyward8066 The temperature does not need to stay at 70, if your house is ambient between 65 and 72 throughout the day that is completely fine. If you think that your house is going to be less than 65° then you might want to get a heater.Shrimp do not need the same temperature all day long normal fluctuations and gradual changes are part of what they’re used to. In nature they are not tropical they are from streams that are pretty cold water, so they were very tolerant of cooler temps.

I don’t add any supplements. I just use Natural foods, if you watch my video on food you’ll see what I use

Does that Akadama Bonsai soil breakdown fairly fast or does it stay grainy like that? I love that color soil. BTW, did you paint your background white or what are you using...good contrast for your plants and shrimp. Are you feeding them snow pops?
Hi There! This is my first Akadama Tank. So far so good. Mark's Shrimp Tanks inspired me to start one and I know he has tanks with Akadama running for a long time and they look like the soil is not breaking down! I use a frosted window background. Its super easy to apply and gives a nice look. I did a video on how I applied it (SUPER easy!) I never did try snow pops. I mostly feed my shrimp Mulberry Leaves, Snowflake food, vegetable pellets and powder food.

Honestly because they don’t care or know about proper husbandry (Parameters especially for shrimp) Just because the shrimp is alive doesn’t mean that it’s thriving or doesn’t mean it’s not suffering and going to die. Neocaridina and Caridina require dramatically different parameters and tank set ups for them to do well. Sometimes you see advanced reptiles in pet shops that are not being cared for the way they should be with the proper heat lamps or environment. Pet shop is probably one of the least reliable sources for shrimp information and proper example of husbandry.
I bought some ghost shrimp yesterday, they were feeder shrimp so they were so cheap and I put them in my tank last night and fed them some turkey and they absolutely loved it! I thought they were doing fine and then I wake up this morning and they are all dead. I think its due to the PH in the water being too acidic :(
they likely died because you fed it turkey... poultry is a no no, much less turkey.

Do you does ferts and or use co2 in that tank.. those buces look amazing! Cant get my buces to grow like that in my shrimp tanks.. what do you keep your water parameters at.. gh5 . Kh0 TDs 100 to 150 (130) average? The only time I saw a buce flower was when I put it into my high light/fert/co2 planted tank! So.. how'd you do it?
Hi Laszlo! Thanks for watching! All of my shrimp tanks are low tech = no co2, no ferts, low-med light. The buce does very well in this setting. I do nothing special and I find it to be a simple undemanding plant much like anubias!

Hi, is it okay to use tap water to cycle a tank then use ro water when its time to put in crystal reds?
Also found a rimless but its high instead of wide is that okay?
High is fine, but for viewing pleasure most people prefer wide.You can use tap water, it can exhaust your buffering substrate faster, I always use RO.

I realize this is old, but if you still get notifications on it, do you use the same TDS meter in all your tanks or do you have a separate one for each. If the same is used, what do you use to prevent cross contamination?

Takes time. Neocaridina babies and juveniles won't show the same intense color as a full adult. Caridina show color from a young age. Just patience and time is what you need :)

Are Neocaridina really hard water? Currently holding blue dream & cherry shrimp in pH 6.5, Gh 6. Kh 3. Tested so many times. 😿 I cycled the the water with a piece of shrimp from the store I boiled it threw it in.
They are known to do best in a PH of mid 7's. Although they can live in lower they will do best in higher ph.

so tonight i just failed at installing a front wheel bearing on my car, i cant take that. then it occurred to me, "you think this is bad?!! try losing shrimp you are wanting to get" talk about an eye opener. between the two month cycle JUST to be the dirt right and then you may not even get babies if mama dont like the tank! omg neocaridina here i come, from here on out its guppies and neo's!!!
