I've definitely experienced Fluval Stratum stripping the KH--and my pH gradually decreasing over the course of a week from 7.2 to 6.4. But my tap water's KH is already very low, only about 3 degrees, and I wanted a more neutral pH in that tank. I compensated by adding a small amount of crushed coral to my filtration. That brought the KH and pH back up very gradually--about 0.2 pH per day before it stabilized at 7.2--and raised GH slightly (it was low anyway). I could probably easily keep caridina shrimp with this tap water on an active substrate. But neocaridina is more readily available in my area, so I'll be watching this new substrate I'm trying to see what it does for a while before I populate this new tank. If I have to, I'll repeat the crushed coral procedure.

This information was quite helpful. I've had issues with keeping shrimp and the reasons you've outlined in the video are inline with my situation.
    1 - Small 8 gallon tank.
    2 - Active Substrate.
    3 - 25% water changes every week
This in turn is the reason for shrimp deaths.

Before I knew better, I flooded my tank with cupramine to get rid of pond snails that came in on plants. (No other life, I was waiting for the tank to cycle. I ended up with a total mess.
I have drained the tank. Replaced the gravel and filter media. I’ve wiped down the inside of the tank. Do I need to take it in the shower and really flood it with water? Will that work? Will this tank ever be safe for shrimps?

do you think having plants in a shrimp tank is important? I started with quite a few plants and rocks. Because of the plants, I used a substrate with stuff good for the plants - compost and manure, and then topped it with layers of gravel and sand to keep fertilizers out of the water. It never really worked that well. The ammonia would be 0.25 and the nitrites 0.5, even after there were plenty of ammonia eating bacteria in the tank. I'm thinking of trying something with a more traditional sterile substrate; if any plants then, maybe I'd use floating plants.

I have a tank with lots of plants and moss, plus sand and gravel. I started with 10 shrimps, 3 months later I have more than 100. Have also a lot of snails, 5 corydora panda (2 adults, 3 baby's), 3 white corydora, 6 cardinal tetra's in the same tank. All are very well. In my view people are far to much messing up with their tanks. Leave it alone! Make sure there is enough light, the filter does its job and feed the animals 1 time a day. That's it. Really.

Since they are hiding between the rocks a lot I'm not sure if more have died or if they're just hiding. My PH is around 6,6, KH 1 and GH 5 do you think they will die because I didn't use active soil? I noticed that all of your tanks seem to only have one species of shrimp! Is this because you're a breeder, or does it affect the survival and health of the shrimp? My boyfriend's shrimp tank had two ghost shrimp, two rainbow shrimp, and two cherry shrimp. The two ghosts died, I haven't seen one of the rainbow and cherry in days, the last time I saw the other rainbow was yesterday, and the final cherry is suddenly swimming a lot more than usual. What did we do to cause genocide on these poor shrimp?

Some shrimp are more aggressive and can sometimes out preform as far as breeding goes.

Is it possible to breed both species in one tank? I know it's not going to get the best results, but what would you think the best water parameters would be for temperature, pH, GH, and KH

are you sure they're dying or what your seeing could be just their outer skin? shrimps tend to shed their outer skin as they grow so you sometimes see a white shrimp shaped thing which could lead you to believe they're dead but actually might be just the skin they shed

I find that the best fish to keep with shrimp are tetras of any kind. However only if you have ample hiding spots for the little bastards like rock piles for the young shrimp. Some will get eaten but we'll call that natural selection.
