Shrimp Keeping Myths - Do Bright Lights Kill Shrimp?

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 ก.ค. 2024
  • Today I wanted to talk about some myths that are in the freshwater shrimp hobby. Let's focus today on the following questions that I get frequently:
    1. Does high light from planted tanks kill shrimp?
    2. Do shrimp need specialty shrimp food?
    3. Do need pristine water and are they really that sensitive?
    4. Do shrimp crawl out of aquarium?
    5. Do shrimp need warm water?
Drop a comment down bellow if you have questions that you want answered in a future video. Have a safe night and keep it shrimple!

I had an Amano crawl out of its tank, across my bedroom floor, down the hallway, through my dinning room and into the living room.

Advice : always put shrimp back into the tank if they've crawled out, they may look dry, dead and motionless but they somehow unstick their legs and recover they can be dry for hours and motionless before they die!!

Wow, just wow. For all you know, it could have been severely depressed living in a tank, perhaps even bullied by racist shrimps, they could’ve been calling her Sharon because it doesn’t wear a mask, and it’s just want to go to shrimp heaven. It could be as romantic as a long journey to get to his or her soulmate in another tank, or maybe you were supposed to flush it down the toilet because it’s trying to find Nemo, but NOOOO...
You chose to throw it back to the hell it just crawled out of and with the audacity to advice the world about it.
You're probably thinking you’re a hero that saved its life, and never crossed your mind what the shrimp really want.
"always put shrimp back into the tank if they've crawled out"
Do you see what an asshole you’re?

Shrimp sometimes get spooked and that makes them jump. They tend to be pretty good about not jumping out of the tank, but occasionally they will just jump out to their deaths. Amano shimp are the ones that are really good at "crawling out" not "jumping" out. Unlike most other shrimp these guys have strong legs that can support their weight pretty well. They are well known as escape artists. They do this because they move between pools of water in their natural habitat.

When I had a hunk of moss floating in my aquarium, somehow a cherry had crawled with partial buoyancy to the middle of it and I guess the water level dropped and the moss rose up and the shrimp was stranded.
Luckily I came and checked on the tank and saved him lol

I came home to a package in late december in new england that said live animals on my front step. sure enough it was my shrimp order and i was pretty sure they were all dead aftering opening the box. thanks ups. went to look into the return process and go to take a picture of the shrimp when i notice one is moving. so i give the bag another 20 mins and a few more are up and going. after an hour all the shrimp were fully alert or mostly there. its crazy what these little guys can endure.

Same here. The little 'pole jumper' are unbelievable at how they jump out of the tank at night but not during the day. I found a few on the floor in the morning as stiff as freeze-dried food. My tanks are covered at night and open during the day. They can't be covered 24 hours because water has to 'breathe' or else it starts to 'sweat' and 'raindrops' form under the lids and becoming like the powdery stuff found in underground caves that drops down, I forgot the name.

I keep my shrimp and most of my fish at room temps between 68 and 75 year round. I have had no issues with this. Thanks for doing this. I haven't had issues with shrimp crawling out, but my tanks are covered. My amanos get excited when I open the lids, they love to jump and crawl everywhere including out of tanks. I have had a few jump out of nets when transferring them into tanks. Gotta watch out for that with any shrimp species.

My Amano shrimp would jump around when cleaning the tank, so now I don't ever clean it, and they, the snails and plants keep it clean, I just add purified water, and feed them. My Amano shrimps are now going to be 4 years old, and they act like little puppy dogs, and come running when they see me opening the tank. Janet likes to hold on to my finger when she gets her food, where as Larry prefers to grab the food and run, they are very entertaining!

I am so glad I saw this video because I have been having issues with shrimp food , I got that Hikari shrimp diet but... the thing that bothered me was it has trace amounts of copper and i did have some of them die feeding them that food... they seem to like the fish flakes over even the alge wafers i put in there but others seemed super picky and wouldn't eat anything i put in there. I would give them blood worms but they seem to be fussy about rather they eat them or not where as others go to town on them. I have large drift wood in there now with plenty of bio film growing and Alge now but still not sure exactly what to feed these guys. I have the Neo Cardina and sadly some of the ones I got from this guy and all of them died except for one super orange one i named Bertha and shes still living strong. I stick with the Neo Cardia but have just gotten some more that will be going into the 55 Gallon soon.

One of my shrimps crawled or jumped out of a tank while i was cleaning it. 2 hours later, after i thought it would be naturally‘very dead’, i looked at the shrimp (I’d put into an empty jar) to express sadness, and noticed a leg move. I thought it was due to my movement. But, I put the shrimp back in the tank (i didnt know why at the time, if dead). She instantly swam, like a shrimp on speed. Within half an hour, she was flipping out baby shrimps. I was freaked out to say the least!

Ive got a tank with a lot of pennywort in it, there's a fluval 3.0 plant light over the tank and the shrimp seem to like sitting under the light actually, so they'll literally be 4 inches from that light sometimes. I would imagine if it was harmful for them or they didn't like it they'd go down to one of the shaded cave like areas I've made for them, or even just the substrate in general.

Asian Arowana I have cherry shrimp & blue sapphire shrimp with harlequin rasboras and red eye tetras. I find most small schooling fish tend to be okay with little shrimp. Especially the different tetra varieties.

Hi, I have a question. I have a tank with RCS, what other species can I keep with them which share roughly the same parameters but wont interbreed? Thanks

In terms of other shrimps, you will have to keep them with Caridina and/or Amano shrimp. RCS are neocaridina and will crossbreed with other Neocaridina of any colour and their offspring will mostly be a brown or undesirable colour. Meanwhile mixing different types of Caridina can result in strange patterns so some people do mix them but very rarely do people mix neocaridina with other neocaridina.

If I use a mattenfilter and have no hud, how will I keep the shrimp in a 10 gal without them jumping out? The mattenfilter is higher than the tank, so a hud wouldn't fit.

shrimps probably can crawl out of rimless tanks. maybe traditional braced aquariums w/ lids and "overhangs" would discourage them to crawl out because they'd need to be extra dexterous to do so

Do you have any special shrimps like the Golden Boa's?
I also want to say, that shrimps get out of the tanks because they dont like it or something is wrong with the water. If you see a shrimp ''dead'' laying outside, try to put it back into the water. Once a shrimp jumped out of the net and after a few hours i found it on my desk dried out, after I put it back into the water and after a few minutes it was still alive and moving.

Side note: If your water parameters are good for the shrimp you’re keeping and they can readily find food, they will more than likely not give you problems about climbing out. As far as shrimp needing warm water, absolutely not! I experimented with this and successfully kept shrimp in water for extended periods of time as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit, just don’t expect them to breed in these kind of temps. I keep my colony tanks around 68* F - 72* F and they breed regularly and do extremely well.

I agree with you about high light. BUT how about cold light? I mean high kelvin or even blue light? I don't think it kills shrimp but do they thrive with cold light?

I've got a huge problem! I have leeches in my shrimp tank, but the only recommend way to get rid of them is with poison that will also kill the shrimp. I've tried the shrimp safe planaria killer, but leaches still live. Any suggestions?

I dont think shrimps can crawl out of tanks, i think most of them jump out of panic or whatever reason, but it surely is accidental.

I’ve seen my ghost shrimp jump close to the surface sometimes, when they jump out there still very wet and it kind of sticks to things, so that shrimp probably jumped out and his wet body got stuck to the surface of the tank
