  • SHRIMP TANK Setup for caridina shrimps require a lot of maintenance. Is it possibile to breed shrimps in low maintenance aquarium or in no maintenance shrimps aquarium? Is the solution for breeding shrimps an anoxic filtration tank?

    I used to breed CRS in a 120 gallon tank on inert sand (pool filter sand) with lots of driftwood and a sponge filter. I had moderately soft water from the tap, so that's what I used. I did a bit of a water change once a year. I gave it quite a lot of light, maybe 18hrs a day. It was planted with water sprite. I fed the shrimp 2 or 3 times a week with some cheap flake food that was meant for fish.

    Such an interesting video. I do the opposite, lots of flow, lots or filtration, over filtration. Went from 5% weekly wc to 5% every 2 weeks. But in the summer I got lazy and top up and no wc and shrimp bred like nuts

      I had an interesting experience with red cherry shrimp. I had a tank of 9 that used to have platies in it. There was aquarium soil and some white gravel. It was about a 1 year old tank with some cryptocoryne and java moss. I put in an Indian almond leaf and fed hikari shrimp food. I basically added new water about once every 2 months there was mulm everywhere and the population of shrimp went from 9 to 500+ in that year. I basically had to do nothing except feed a bit of food daily. They really liked organic spinach, zucchini, cucumber and even sometimes bit of cooked salmon?? Anyway it was interesting...I still have around 200 since I have been selling them regularly.

      @@Mastafan1000 this is why the balance of upkeep and water condition is so important. In a past I had little tank 19l, with 10 pinto shrimps, no WC only top off. The results was over 500 shrimps in 1 year. The funny thing was that after that time the tank was overpopulated and collapsed. This is why I don't do 20% wc each week.

    That actually works quite well in heavily planted aquascapes. I have 2 of them (30l cubes) and keep tibees in one and galaxy fishbones in the other. Got CO2 in it and a ph of 5.9 to 6.1. And the shrimps thrive though I do water changes of about 20% only every 2nd or 3rd week. The filtration is very weak on those tanks and I think it's mostly the plants that keep those tanks going. On the other hand I have 3 usual breeding tanks which need way more maintenance compared to the the 2 cubes.

      I'm starting to see some good results with low maintenance tanks and will try to develop it.

    I don't have one specific tank for that, but I can say that is true, I think I did 2 water changes in 8 months on my main tank because a bad time and no time for shrimps. They have been with only window light some weeks also. Shrimps kept feeding and breeding with no problems. And they have passed through 2-3 days with no feeding many times.
    The aquarium has 1 filter for current and biologic filtration and 2 sponge air filters, also a pretty healthy java moss and pelia. Soil was HELP for shrimps. I think they will be breeding even more if I followed a right alimentation.
    Now they are living on a correct way. But I think genetic improve with strong survivors. Its actually F5 tangtaitibee and close to boa/fishbone patron on the back.
    This problem and experiment teach me that I dont need to worry too much and also dont disturb them. So now I dont clean cristals..I dont quit food and just wait they finish, I dont do nothing when I see babies.. just water changes and food
    I dont even use Osmosis ( my water is 60ppm and only 20 ppm are KH, ph6, so I only add salts)

    Love undergravel filters for shrimp and bettas , easy to care for and shrimp babies everywhere .
    Heathy bettas and can’t remember the last time I had losses in those two tanks . Just feed and I still like to do a 30% water change a week just so water parameters stay similar. I don’t want to mess with what works, I don’t even gravel vac it , ever.

      (continued from last message)... Ludwigia sp. for faster growth, red root floaters, water lettuce and a pothos plant growing emergent. The soil is controsoil. I use ro/di water remineralized with seachem equilibrium. I just ordered salty shrimp gh+, however. Only 1 gallon tank but im setting up a 25 gal cube as well. Any advice?

    Hi, i would like to ask will your tds in your tank raise a lot if doing water changes once in a month?

    • @BDGMed
      @BDGMed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually not if you don’t have rocks in the tanks. If you have rocks that leach minerals into the water, then water changes will be needed every week.

    • @ShrimpTimeInt
      @ShrimpTimeInt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BDGMed for me Caridina shrimps = 0 rocks. The tds will raise a bit each top off unless You got 0 tds water. You need to remeber aswell that tds will raise depending on different factores in a tank

      I love the idea of anoxic filtration.
      However it is definitely an advanced method. It’s simple in its design but for the novice shrimp keeper I can see where they will make a mistake.
      I use seachem matrix biomedia in the canister filter for my caridina tank because seachem claim it has anoxic traits that will reduce nitrates.
      You should take a look at that bio media maybe do a review!

      @@elephant0kingsueperb546 the are a lot of products that calims to be anoxic. Hard to do reliable test.
