    I have a 3 story house and grow 10 plants on the sunny side.
    They grow right to the 3rd floor. My Son has a Micro Brewery
    every Fall he makes an Ale from the Hops I grow.

    Good series. I enjoyed hearing "behind the scenes" of your industry. Everyone enjoys that beer at the bar, but hardly ever thinks about what it took to get it to the bar.

    Thank you for putting up this series. I am in Nova Scotia and we get the same or very similar weather as Connecticut. Seemed like it rained all July and has been a very hot August with little to no rain. Anyways... next summer we are going to start with an acre hop yard. The questions you are asking and the information you are offering is excellent. I do wish we had some kind of co-op here but hop yards seem to be a pioneering industries on the east coast. I hope you get the info you need and can't wait for your recap.
    Have a great harvest

    I have an idea for a simple harvester. Screw a 2"L x 1/2"W PVC pipe to the table and run the bines through stem to tip, then you'd just have to sort the leaves and buds apart which you could use a piece of 2"x4" fencing to catch the leaves? Thanks for sharing, I'm in the PNW and hops just grow themselves.

      That is an interesting idea, hand picking is insane slow and stupid unless you bring people together like this guy does. It requires something like he talks about, a collaboration. The pulling through a honed pvc pipe might be worth considering, then simply sorting (which could be done very simply with an incline sorting series of belts like the Wolf have or other harvesters have for sorting).

    Sounds like a fun day, how does one get a chance at one of those 130-150 spots? Looking great farmer John!

    You get sleppy while harvesting?

  • @HaikuAutomation
    @HaikuAutomation 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really the most effective way is get a mobile solution for small scale. UNM folks are doing this in the SW of Colorado. They are using the 5G Hop Harvester, check them out, its about hitting it right on 'tour' with whomever is running the harvest. Not much different than wheat cutters do, they travel and show up, move from one location to another, usually south to north.

    Great video! Check out 'A Clergyman's Daughter', George Orwell for a deep dive into hop harvest back in the day. Besides it's Orwell!

    How do you access the top of your hop trellis during harvest and initial setup, being that it is 18' high? I am hobby hop grower looking for ideas. I do have a tractor but the max lift height is only
    9 1/2'. I believe I saw scaffolding in a truck bed in one clip of your video. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi John Just a ballpark, what is the weight of 1 vine with all the hops on it?

    • @happycappy2710
      @happycappy2710 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least 5 to 7 pounds. Getting 2 pounds wet hops per bine is good
